Chapter 10
The Burrow, Ottery St. Catchpole- Monday June 28th 1993
It was a rainy Monday morning at the Burrow. After breakfast the inhabitants of the house entertained themselves as best they could inside. Charlie had left back to Romania, Mr. Weasley was off to work, the younger siblings, Mrs. Weasley, and Bill stayed around the house. Percy was in his room writing a letter to his girlfriend. Fred and George took turns playing Exploding Snaps with Ron at the kitchen table. Bill and Molly sat on the settee talking as she knitted. Harry and Ginny were sitting on the sofa opposite the pair, they sat back to back with their feet on the opposite end of the sofa using each other as support. Molly and Bill watched the young couple all morning who would smile, laugh, and make other facial expressions like they were having a conversation without saying a single word aloud.
A small gray owl, drenched in rain, began tapping at the window in the kitchen. Bill stood up to gather the message. He offered the small bird a treat and a warm dry place to perch while waiting for the rain to pass. He examined the letter and saw it was for Harry. He walked over to hair and his sister on the couch which seemed to startle them out of their internal conversation.
"Alright Harry," Bill said, chuckling as Harry jumped from his position.
"Yeah Bill, sorry didn't see you get up."
"It's okay Harry, here you have a letter." Bill handed the boy his letter but remained standing out of curiosity.
It must be Hermione, but this doesn't look like her handwriting Harry wondered
Open it and see
It's from Remus, my parents' friend! Harry and Ginny both turned from their position putting their feet on the ground and looking at the letter.
Open it Harry, I'm sure he's excited to hear from you
What if it's not, what if he wants to be left alone
"You won't know until you open it, it will be fine," Ginny finished aloud. Her mother and eldest brother looked curiously at the pair. Bill made a mental note to mention their lack of conversation to the pair.
Harry began opening the letter and read over it while allowing Ginny to read. At this point Ron and the twins walked into the living room as well to see what was going on. Ron had obviously not been doing well at exploding snaps with few singed marks on his sleeves. He held Scabbers in the crook of his arm as he listened to the conversation.
Oh Harry I told you, I told you!
He wants to meet me?
Of course he does
"Who is the letter from, dearie?" Mrs. Weasley asked.
"Remember how you told me about my parents and…him," Harry said with disgust at the mention of Sirius.
"Yes dear."
"Well, I decided to write to their other friend, Remus Lupin. He was excited to hear from me and would like to meet up in Diagon Alley so I can learn more about them." Harry said excitedly.
"Well that sounds like a great idea," Molly said. "If he is able to, we can go this Thursday, I think this would be really great for you."
"Ow Scabbers," Ron whined while trying to chase after his rat. "You bit me, come back here." Ron trodden up the stairs after his rat leaving the rest of his family behind.
"I'll write to him now and see if he is available," Harry replied, getting up and going to his trunk, which had now been moved into Ginny's room, to gather his writing tools. Ginny stood to follow him but was stopped by her older brother.
"Gin, I think it's time you and Harry told us just what happened in the Chamber" Bill said to his youngest sibling.
"Okay, but just you dad and mom."
"That's fine, why don't the five of us have a conversation tonight after supper."
The rest of the day went by much the same. Harry finished his letter to Remus and chatted to Ginny excitedly about the prospects of meeting someone close to his parents. After dinner Molly, Arthur, Bill and the young couple made their way for a private conversation in Ginny's bedroom.
"We wanted to give you both some time to heal and adjust from your bond, but to better understand what is going on we need to know what happened down there with the two of you." Arthur stated lovingly to the two youngest members of the group.
"Well okay, you know that I was possessed by the diary," Ginny started off timidly.
"Yes, Albus told us," Molly replied carefully.
Harry I can't do this
I can Gin, I'll tell them everything
"When Ginny was brought down to the Chamber, Tom was trying to take over her to come back to life. When I got down there she was lying there, I thought she was dead. I ran to her side trying to wake her up. That's when I learned who Tom really was and what he was trying to do. He sent the Basilisk after me but I was able to stop him with the sword of Gryffindor…" Harry began.
"The sword of Gryffindor, how in Merlin's name did you get that, it's been lost for a very long time?" Bill asked, surprised.
"Well, Fawkes, Dumbledore's phoenix brought the sorting hat to me and it was inside. I was able to kill the Basilisk but when I pierced it with the sword, one of its fangs stuck into my arm. I was able to pull it out but the poison was spreading quickly. I used the fang to destroy the diary and Ginny woke up."
"When I woke up I saw Harry, oh it was terrible Mum. He looked dead already, so I went to him begging for him not to die. He dropped down, I think he well, I think he might have died. All I remember is holding him and crying for him to wake up. The next thing I know we were in the Hospital Wing." Ginny finished on the brink of a breakdown.
"Oh, oh my dears," Molly said, walking up to the young pair and embracing them in a hug. "You saved each other, you are both so brave."
I'm not brave I'm a bloody idiot
No you aren't Ginny
Yes I am Harry
No, I'm the idiot, if we would have paid more attention to you last year we could have helped you.
It's not your fault
And it isn't yours either Ginny, Voldermort is a bastard who would do anything to get back to power. I promise I will protect you from him as long as I live
"I'm sorry Ginny, I know this has got to be one of the worst first years in Hogwarts History," Bill started. "Maybe if I was home I could have helped you. That's why I've decided to move back to the Burrow."
"You're moving back, oh Bill." Molly left her two younger kids and embraced her eldest.
"I met with Gringotts last week before coming back here, I will start my job with them next week."
"We are happy to have you home Bill," Arthur patted his eldest son lovingly on the back. "Harry and Ginny, I am proud of you both. I am so sorry you were put in this situation to begin with, but I am glad you are both okay. Harry, thank you for saving my little girl."
I'm not a little girl
You kind of are
Git
"I would do it all again if I had to, I won't let anything ever happen to Ginny again," Harry stated with much conviction.
"We know you wouldn't Harry," Bill replied. "Speaking of you and Ginny, care to tell us just what "gifts" your bond has given you."
He knows we can talk to each other
He is my smartest brother
Not Percy?
Percy's a prat
Should we tell them
It couldn't hurt Harry
"Harry and I can talk to each other, in our minds, and we can listen to what the other hears if they aren't around." Ginny explained to her family.
"We are certainly going to have our hands full with you two," Arthur chuckled. The three eldest left the pair alone to get ready for bed. Ginny stayed in her room to change and Harry made his way into the bathroom. When he returned Ginny was sitting on the edge of her bed waiting for him. They laid down together and waited as her parents and older brother came back into the room to wish them goodnight. Fred and George poked their heads in some time later joking about cooties and made their way to their room. Harry wrapped his arms around Ginny as she nuzzled under his arm.
I could get used to this
So could I, goodnight Harry
Goodnight Gin
As Ginny drifted off to sleep she could have sworn she heard Harry think the words I love you, but she was much too tired to know for sure and she drifted into a very peaceful sleep.
The Leaky Cauldron- Thursday July 1st 1993
Ginny, Harry, and her mother arrived just minutes before through the Floo network in the Leaky Cauldron. They made their way to a table fit for four. They ordered butterbeers and sandwiches while they waited for the last member of their group to arrive. Harry sat nervously squeezing Ginny's hand waiting for Remus Lupin to arrive.
It will be fine Harry
I know, but what if it isn't
It will be, if he doesn't like you then it's his loss, not yours
Remus Lupin entered the door of the Leaky Cauldron, he scanned the room in search of his late best friends son. Remus was worried he wouldn't know what the boy looked like until he spotted him. Remus froze in his tracks as he saw what looked like a carbon copy of a young James sitting at a table with none other than two redheads. Remus chuckled to himself as he made his way to the table, Prongs would be proud.
"Harry," Remus asked cautiously.
"Mr. Lupin?" Harry asked, causing the older man to laugh.
"Oh your father would be in hysterics if he heard you call me that. Please call me Remus, although you used to call me Uncle Moony."
"Uncle Moony," Harry said wistfully.
"I have not been happier than to receive your letter Harry. I would have reached out sooner myself but I wasn't sure you would want to hear from me," Remus looked around the table. "And who do you have with you?"
"This is Ginny, a..friend of mine from school," Harry said with a slight blush. "And this is Mrs. Weasley, Molly, her mum. I am staying with the Weasley's now."
"Oh staying with a lot of redheads, you really are your father's son," Remus joked. "And Molly, your husband is Arthur Weasley, works in the Muggle Department?"
"Yes, that's my Arthur," Molly said with pride.
"Harry you are very lucky indeed, the Weasley's are one of the finest wizarding pureblood families this world has left." Molly blushed as she took her seat again at the table. Remus ordered himself a lunch and butterbeer and joined the group back at the table.
"So Harry, you just finished your second year at Hogwarts right?"
"Yes sir, I start my third year in September, in your letter you said you roomed with my dad at Hogwarts."
"I did, your dad was quite something in school. He was brilliant and quite the knack for pranks. I don't think he could walk into a room without lighting the whole place up."
"Did you know my mum?"
"Oh yes, your dad pinned after your mom since first year. She was the brightest witch with quite a knack for potions. I've never met a woman quite as smart or kind as your mother. I don't know why she chose James but those two were perfect together."
"Brightest witch of her age sounds like Hermione," Ginny thought aloud.
"Hermione?"
"She's a friend of mine in my year," Harry stated. "She's a muggleborn too, like mum, but you couldn't tell, she knows everything."
Remus chuckled, "Sure does sound like your mom, are you going into your third year too Ginny?"
"No sir, I'm a year behind Harry, my brother Ron is in Harry's year."
The rest of the afternoon continued much the same. Harry was thrilled to have a connection to his parents and Uncle Moony seemed lighter than when he first walked in the door. They talked for a couple of hours before promising to see each other again. Mrs. Weasley invited him for dinner at the Burrow tomorrow night and Remus promised to be there. Remus headed out and the remainder of the party left for Diagon Alley. Harry and Ginny got a few items at Zonko's joke shop and Mrs. Weasley purchased some needed household items. They made their way back to the Leaky Cauldron and back home. Harry was excited for Friday night's dinner. Little did he know just how exciting that dinner would be.
AN: I hope you enjoyed this Chapter. I am hoping to get the next one up before the end of the week. I hope I'm not making my intentions too obvious with Lupin.
