Chapter 54
And, it's a wrap, my dear readers! After 8 years, the last chapter is finally here. Oh man, what a ride this one has been! So many things happened, so many memories. To the readers who have been here since the very beginning, faithfully reading every chapter, thank you so much, hope you're interested in my new projects. Anyway, dear readers, I hope you enjoy this last chapter. May we meet again!
Summary: The Clexa wedding is here! Also, the wedding night (¬‿). Octavia makes a decision regarding her personal life. Our girls finally have their happy ending.
As Skypeople tradition demands, Abby leads Clarke to the floral archway where the ceremony will take place. After a gentle hand squeeze, Abby leaves Clarke alone where she stands waiting for her bride.
As the Grounder tradition demands, Lexa goes to meet Clarke alone, like the true warrior she has always been.
The moment their eyes meet is magical.
Clarke watches in fascination as Lexa slowly approaches her, taking note of the beautiful dress her future wife is wearing. 'Jahnisce's work, no doubt'. Clarke concludes.
A piece worthy of a Commander.
Lexa for her part is a nervous wreck, not used to facing the public in personal situations. But when her eyes are only on Clarke, she forgets everything. 'Esiry wasn't exaggerating,' she thinks to herself. 'Clarke does look gorgeous.' With her eyes glued to Clarke, Lexa moves forward until she's close to her.
The guests watch from their seats, genuinely happy for the couple.
"Hi."
"Hey."
The brides greet each other as Lexa finally stands next to Clarke in front of the archway. They can't help the wide smiles on their faces. Both in awe of the beauty of their garments, their hearts bursting with love, their looks carrying all the emotion words can't convey. It's finally the moment they never imagined as a reality, one that began to look like a possible dream once they were a couple. After all the tears, war, and death in the middle, they made it! For a moment, they lose themselves in each other's eyes; it's as if they were all alone. Nothing matters but them.
It is only when the elder who will officiate at the wedding is brought before them that they finally break their gaze and pay attention to the old woman.
The ceremony is performed in Trigedasleng, as it has always been in the case of Grounder unions and, more recently, weddings.
The only part of the ceremony allowed in English was the vows, as it was a custom introduced by the Skypeople.
A few days ago, they were both a little nervous about this particular part. They talked about their vows and decided together that they wouldn't have any reservations; they could say what was on their minds. All the guests were loved ones and family, so even if they didn't fully understand the nature of their mystical reunion and how it came about, they would have to accept it and deal with it. For so long they had both done everything for their people, now it was time to be open about their love without worrying about the opinions of others.
The last former commander, Clarke, decided to go first.
"It's been quite a ride for us, huh?" Clarke begins with an ironic comment that makes the guests laugh. She then focuses solely on her bride before saying, "Anyone in here could tell you the person I was while you were gone. It would be fair to say that I became someone else. She remarks while holding both of Lexa's hands. "I was just trying to respect your legacy and keep it alive, just surviving; but then..." Clarke's throat closes. "...you came back and... just like you, I was reborn. The side of me that was dead came back to life, I was living again; all because of you." She smiles brightly, tears in her eyes. "And now here we are, about to fulfill a dream I never dared to imagine, not even when I was a little girl, back on the Ark." A choked giggle escapes her throat as she finishes, "Thank you Lexa, for giving me life, for giving me love, for giving me something I didn't know I wanted, that I needed. For making me forget all the bitter times of war and death, for teaching me how to forgive. Thank you for giving me a reason to live. I love you."
Lexa, never taking her eyes off Clarke and clearing her throat from the emotion, begins her own vows. "In my previous life, I wasn't allowed to enjoy relationships or love properly, as it was considered weakness, and I have to admit, for a while, I believed that." She squeezes Clarke's hands before continuing. "It wasn't until I met you that these ideas, implanted in me since I had memory, were questioned, because with you I learned what it meant to have a future with someone. Even in those days of war, I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to live by your side or, as unfathomable as it sounded at the time, to grow old with you." Lexa becomes emotional again, but she continues. "In my new life, the spirits gave me a taste of happiness, of freedom. They let me see that there were other things worth fighting for besides war, and that's what made me understand that I was back to be with you." Unable to hold back her tears and not really caring at this point, Lexa says. "Thank you, Clarke, for giving me hope, for giving me peace, for showing me the love I didn't know existed, for giving me a new life by your side. I love you."
Abby and Jahnisce are crying, almost as intensely as the brides.
The rest of the guests are very moved as well.
Octavia, the only one who seems to maintain some level of composure, signals for Adam to bring the rings.
Two beautiful gold rings, made especially for them by the most skilled blacksmith in Polis.
The engagement ring was a Skypeople representation, so Clarke thought it would be appropriate to keep the wedding rings with a Grounder representation.
After they eagerly slipped the rings onto each other's fingers, the elder proceeded with the final part of the ceremony.
"May the spirits bless this union and protect your love wherever you wander, as they have done since the moment they chose you as our saviors." She places her hands on Lexa's and Clarke's joined hands and proclaims. "What the spirits have joined, no one dares to break," she adds then with a small grin and a change in her usual phrasing. "Not even death."
Lexa and Clarke beam complicitly.
The Elder ends with the traditional pronouncement in marriage unions. "By the power vested in me by the holy spirits, I now pronounce you wife and wife. You may now kiss."
The guests let out shouts of joy.
Lexa and Clarke stare at each other with smiles that seem to light up the room. Wasting no time, they lean in for a long-awaited kiss.
Everyone stands, cheering, whistling, applauding. The bride's happiness is contagious; they all feel as blissful as Clarke and Lexa.
They kiss softly, slowly, tenderly; as if to make sure it's real, as if it's not a figment of their imaginations. It doesn't last long, but it's enough to satisfy them for now. When they pull away, they do so with huge grins that refuse to leave their faces.
Then, as it suddenly occurs to Clarke, she raises her and Lexa's arms in a symbol of triumph over adversity and death. A privilege only Wanheda can afford.
The crowd grows louder at the gesture.
Raven, now standing next to Octavia, joins in the celebration between tears and laughter. Suddenly she notices something as she looks at the newlyweds. She blinks, double-checks, but her vision doesn't change.
The one before her eyes is now Commander Lexa.
Then Raven rubs her eyes and it is only then that teenage Lexa is back into view. She looks around, but everyone seems oblivious to what she just witnessed. That is until she turns to Octavia, who looks like she just saw a ghost. She has to ask.
"Did you...?"
"Yeah." Octavia answers, never taking her eyes off of Lexa.
"What the hell was that?" Raven asks, looking back at the young warrior.
"I don't know, but..." Octavia turns to Raven and waits until she looks at her back to add. "That never happened. "
"Yeah, yeah, okay." Raven nods energetically.
Some things really weren't designed to be understood, so they'd better leave it at that.
...
The wedding reception also takes place in the forest, accompanied only by Grounder music.
Clarke and Lexa are the first to hit the dance floor for their first wives-dance.
Again, it's an emotional moment for the guests to witness.
The newlyweds move and twirl to the rhythm of the songs they have chosen for the occasion. For Lexa, it was a song she had always demanded be played for her during her years as a Commander. It was the only thing that seemed to relax her during those hard times of hardship. For Clarke, it was a song she happened to hear while attending a Grounder celebration; she found it moving and with a hint of hope in it, something to hold on to when wartime came.
Soon everyone is invited to join in the dancing, signaling the beginning of the party.
There is a huge buffet table filled with the most delicious foods in the land, including the wives' favorites. After some dancing, the guests rush to sample the food.
In the midst of the festivities, Clarke and Lexa also approach a table to eat.
"You know?" Clarke says as she watches Lexa eat a canapé.
"Hmm?" Lexa replies, distractedly.
"Being married suits you. You look gorgeous." Clarke flirts shamelessly with a smirk on her lips.
Lexa giggles but is ready for a comeback. "Oh yeah?" She approaches Clarke, leans into her ear, and whispers. "You should see how I taste now that I'm married."
Clarke's jaw drops comically.
Yup, the pre-wedding night teasing is on.
…
Octavia and Anna are chatting animatedly, enjoying each other's company on their first official outing free of their responsibilities.
It's going really well. They learn little details about each other's lives and even discuss some silly topics, which adds to their comfort.
That is until they are interrupted.
"Hi there!" Raven suddenly appears and greets the women.
Octavia looks at Raven, confused by the out-of-the-blue intrusion.
"Oh, you're the famous Anna!" Raven exclaims enthusiastically, her full attention on the girl. "I've seen you before in the clinic, but we've never been properly introduced. I'm Raven Reyes." She holds out her hand.
"Um, nice to meet you." Anna, taken aback, shakes Raven's arm in the typical Grounder greeting.
"I've heard a lot about you," Raven comments with a teasing smile.
The color drains from Octavia's face, she wants to kill Raven on the spot.
Anna is greatly surprised by this statement. "Is that so?" She remarks, glancing at Octavia. "Good things, I hope."
The General wants to say something, but nothing comes out of her mouth.
"Of course!" Raven replies. "She's always talking about you."
This is definitely one of the most humiliating moments of Octavia's life. Not only does she want to kill Raven now, she also wants to die of embarrassment. But somehow, she just stands there passively watching her best friend and crush talk about her like she's not even there.
…
With the guests entertained, the parents finally have a chance to spend some quality time with the newlyweds.
"Strikon!" Malku exclaims happily as he approaches Lexa. "My little girl is a married woman now; I can't believe it!" He takes his daughter in his big arms with contrasting tenderness.
Lexa returns the hug warmly, feeling protected as she always did in her father's arms.
Then Adam comes running and collides with his father and sister.
"You did good with the rings, little rascal." Lexa ruffles the hair of her brother, who is now attached to both their hips.
Jahnisce, meanwhile, goes to greet her brand-new daughter-in-law. "Clarke, you look lovely," she says with genuine admiration as she takes Clarke's hands.
"Thank you, Jahnisce." Clarke is just happy that Lexa's mother likes her without the ties of the Commander.
"And your dress... it's wonderful..." Jahnisce gives Clarke an appreciative once-over. "Did you choose the design or was it already done?"
Clarke is more than happy to provide the information; whatever it takes to maintain a good relationship with her mother-in-law.
As they take turns greeting the brides, it's suddenly Abby and Kane's turn.
"Lexa, congratulations!" Kane offers the girl with a wide grin.
"Thank you, Marcus," Lexa replies sincerely to the man she has gotten to know better lately.
"But of course, you look stunning," Abby chimes in. "This screams Jahnisce's work of art."
Lexa giggles at that.
"More impressive than the one you wore on the summit, huh?"
Lexa's jaw drops at this statement. This is the first time Abby has acknowledged her as her former self and she's speechless.
Kane chuckles and rubs his nose, already used to his wife's ways.
Abby winks, enjoying her success in teasing the former Commander Lexa. But not to make things uncomfortable, she then calls. "Can you take some pictures of us, please?" she addresses the photographer.
The woman who had been following the brides gets into position.
"We need a family portrait." Abby lets out looking at Lexa's parents.
Jahnisce and Malku are very touched by the statement.
Clarke and Lexa look at each other with hearts full of love. Abby's little action has achieved what they have been secretly dreaming of for a while now.
Their families are now one.
...
Separated for a moment, the wives walk around the party to greet and thank their guests.
Esiry, taking advantage of seeing Lexa alone, approaches the girl.
"Hey." She gets Lexa's attention.
"Esiry hey!" Lexa replies happily.
"You finally made it, you're a married woman now." Esiry lets out with pride in her voice, but also with a certain edge.
"I know, right." Lexa giggles. Then she seems to notice something strange in her usual bubbly friend. "You okay?" She asks, genuinely concerned.
"Oh yeah, no, I..." Esiry gulps. She doesn't know why she's so nervous, but she remembers who Lexa is and the openness of their friendship. So, she takes a deep breath and speaks. "I just, um, wanted to know if it would be okay with you, uh, I mean, as if it wouldn't be something weird for me to pursue a relationship with Orita."
Lexa is completely caught off guard by the news, so she doesn't really say anything at first, which causes Esiry to elaborate.
"I mean, there's nothing going on right now, but, um, there's this unspoken situation in the air." Esiry sighs shakily and continues. "And I fully intend to find out if something might be possible in the, uh, foreseeable future... yeah." She clears her throat and stands still, waiting for an answer.
Lexa is still at a loss for words; she hadn't expected this at all. Soon she realizes that she's been silent for too long and could be misunderstood, so she hurries to clarify. "Yes, of course, I would be okay with that! It wouldn't be weird at all! It's just... wow." She chuckles. "Sorry, I'm just a little surprised, I didn't know you two..." Lexa shakes her head and assures. "... but if that's what you want, I would totally support you Esiry, I want nothing more than for you and Orita to be happy. Truly." She finishes, making sure that her sincerity is visible.
Esiry lets out a long sigh of relief. "Good. Tha-, that means a lot. Thank you."
With that uncomfortable subject out of the way, the friends resume their interaction, this time with the assurance that their friendship is intact.
...
Octavia excused herself from Raven and Anna's conversation on the pretext of going to get something to eat, but the truth is that she was a little overwhelmed. If I don't hear it, I don't have to deal with it. Octavia reasons as she unenthusiastically serves finger food on a plate.
"So that's Anna, huh?" A familiar voice says right next to Octavia.
"Uh-huh." Octavia answers without stopping what she is doing.
"She's the healer from the clinic, right?"
" Yeah, that's her."
"Hmm," Indra lets out as she looks thoughtfully at Raven and Anna who are still talking in the distance.
The lack of further comments makes Octavia look at her mentor.
"I like her." Indra lets out absentmindedly. Then she turns to Octavia and stares at her with a face of amusement.
"Ugh, for fuck's sake, not you too!" Octavia drops her plate on the table in frustration. She's had enough of the teasing.
"Oh, no, no." At this reaction, Indra hastens to clarify, "I really like her, Octavia. I mean it." She accompanies her remark with a gentle pat on Octavia's shoulder.
Octavia looks at her suspiciously. She blinks several times until Indra's words finally sink in. "Oh!"
Sure that Octavia got the message, Indra gives a satisfied nod and leaves the banquet table with her plate in her hands, munching on her canapés.
Alone with her thoughts, it takes Octavia a few more seconds to really comprehend what just happened. She glances in the direction of her friend and her crush as the side of her lip moves up. Octavia has technically received Indra's blessing for whatever might happen between her and Anna. As the only mother figure she's ever had, that means a lot to her. With more confidence and a little less concern for Raven's nosiness, she returns to reunite with the girls.
...
As food continues to come and go from the tables, Clarke enters the tent that serves as the main kitchen.
"Darling." Roda, who is in charge of the service, leaves her spot to approach the former commander. "What are you doing here, do you need something?" She asks worriedly in her native language.
"No, I don't need anything. I just wanted to say hello." Clarke remarks. She then puts her arm around the woman's shoulders and adds. "And I also wanted to thank you, Roda, the food is delicious, just the way I like it."
Roda smiles at the recognition. "Thank you, my dear, my pleasure. You know I will always be here for you. Whatever you need."
"I know. And thank you for that too." Clarke embraces the woman who has been her guide for a long time; a Grounder mother she has needed so much in difficult times.
It gives her comfort to know that she can count on this wonderful woman as well as her mother. They both offer her different emotional experiences, but all they have to give fills and completes her heart.
Now that the two older women are getting along, Clarke plans to take advantage of their attention and love.
...
Clarke insisted on having certain Skypeople wedding traditions for Lexa to enjoy.
Cutting the cake was a fun activity for the brides.
They offered each other a bite of the wedding cake and Clarke even dared to lick some cream from Lexa's lip just to tease her; the games were still on.
Then came the bouquet toss.
All the eligible bachelorettes lined up to try to grab the object.
Except for Octavia, who preferred to stay away, thinking it silly.
Unfortunately for her, that was not the only silly thing that happened.
As Clarke pretends to toss the bouquet several times to make it funny and interesting, she finally makes eye contact with Raven, who nods slightly.
"Okay, let's try it again, ladies! Come on," Clarke shouts, prompting the countdown once again.
"THREE, TWO, ONE!" The women chant.
Clarke lets go of the bouquet this time but strategically aims it at someone.
As it comes her way, Raven pretends to grab it, carefully knocking it to the side.
The bouquet lands on Anna, who instinctively grabs it. She doesn't realize what's happening until the guests cheer and applaud.
Octavia, however, is very much aware. Just when she thought the little incident with Raven was behind her, this happens. At this point, Octavia thinks that maybe the universe is conspiring against her. She's so caught up in her own mental breakdown that she doesn't notice the little grin Anna is wearing while holding the bouquet.
Clarke and Raven exchange looks with satisfied smiles.
Lexa grins as she shakes her head. She will always secretly and heartily envy the friendship of these three.
…
Following the very sky-like tradition, the newlyweds disappeared in the middle of the party in search of some well-deserved privacy.
It didn't take too much discussion for them to agree on the place where they would spend their wedding night and reconnect after the long week away from each other's bodies.
The chosen place: their secret garden.
Each of them, taking turns, took the time to set up and decorate a tent according to their tastes and desires for the long-awaited night.
As a last-minute decision, it was also the chosen spot for their honeymoon.
Clarke and Lexa arrive, running and giggling like naughty girls. They don't waste any time and as soon as they enter the tent and close the zipper, they find each other's lips.
"Hello, Mrs. Wife," Clarke whispers into Lexa's ear, taking advantage of the little pause they have taken to breathe.
Lexa grins at the word.
Wife.
What a beautiful and committed word. Once unthinkable for her, now reality.
"My wife." She murmurs, clutching at Clarke's hips and pulling her impossibly close to her body. They soon pick up where they left off.
The loving kisses turn into a full-on make-out session in an instant.
It is obvious that the more time passes, the less clothes are needed.
They could be romantic, sensual, take their time; truth be told, they had all the intentions in the world to be. But their desire and anticipation win out.
"Off. Now." Clarke manages, never breaking their intense lip lock.
A difficult task, but they maneuver until they get rid of their elaborate and elegant dresses with the help of the other.
It is quite a pleasure to uncover and discover what the other is wearing underneath. The long sighs and grunts are evidence of their awe.
But Lexa is quickly distracted by the sight of Clarke's white lace underwear, which is completely translucent, leaving nothing to the imagination. Clarke's pink nipples are hard and poking through the fabric, but the thing that catches her attention the most is her thong, which is completely soaked. She leads the way and forces Clarke backward towards a table, once they reach said destination, she helps her up into a sitting position.
Clarke wants to wrap her legs around Lexa's hips but her young wife has other plans.
"Don't move," Lexa manages breathlessly, admiring the beauty of the semi-nude blonde as she caresses her thighs.
The words Clarke was about to utter turn into a moan of anticipation at Lexa's subsequent actions.
Lexa slides her fingers into the sides of Clarke's thong, pulling it down painfully slow. Then her hands sink into Clarke's inner thighs, carefully spreading her legs apart.
Clarke hisses, knowing what Lexa is up to.
Making eye contact with her wife, Lexa slowly drops to her knees. She doesn't even try to tease; she just goes ahead and tastes her wife's juices.
The moan Clarke lets out is only comparable to the one Lexa lets out herself.
Lexa can't stop now, she laps at Clarke's pussy mercilessly, holding onto Clarke's ass to bring her close to her mouth.
As expected, Clarke doesn't last long, she comes after a few more licks.
Her orgasm is fast and strong, so much so that Lexa has to get a hold of Clarke to keep her from falling over.
"That...was..." Clarke tries to speak between heavy breaths. "...not fair."
Lexa, very pleased with herself, laughs. "All is fair in love and war, Clarke, as a former Commander you should know that by now." She comments as she searches for Clarke's mouth.
Clarke hums as she tastes herself on Lexa's lips and tongue. She waits a prudent amount of time to recover and then takes control of the situation.
"Okay, my love." She begins, pushing Lexa backwards. "I want you to lie on the bed and wait for me."
Lexa's brow rises, she can't deny that she likes it when Clarke gets bossy in bed. She obeys without argument. She lies across the bed with her legs hanging to the side, propping herself up on her elbows to get a good view of her wife.
Clarke slowly walks over to her, making room between Lexa's legs. "I wanted to check on something, but..." She looks down at Lexa's sex. "...I guess we won't have any problems in there." She remarks with a grin, noticing how wet Lexa is even through the fabric of her underwear.
Lexa chuckles and gives a little shake of her hips to prove Clarke's point.
"Oh." Clarke lets out as if she just remembered something. "I don't think you'll be needing any of this." She continues to sensually remove Lexa's panties and then her bra with the girl's eager assistance. When the task is done, she adds, "And I won't be needing this." She removes the only article of clothing still on her, her own bra.
Lexa squirms in anticipation.
Clarke then crawls on top of Lexa on the bed and kisses her hard. She grabs the back of Lexa's neck and deepens the kiss by putting her tongue in Lexa's mouth.
Lexa moans and runs her hands over Clarke's naked body.
Having Lexa exactly where she wants her, Clarke leans back just enough to say. "You know? There was something I really wanted to do on my birthday." She reaches under a pillow in the bed as she continues. "I didn't get a chance to do it because I didn't think it was appropriate at the time, but..." She pulls out what she was looking for.
At the sight of the object, Lexa gasps.
"...I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since," Clarke tells her, moving the dildo in her hand for emphasis. With Lexa's full attention on her, she continues. "And I think this is the perfect time to act on my fantasy." She explains while stepping out of the bed and standing at the side again.
Lexa swallows visibly, she knows what is coming... or rather who. She had completely forgotten about it since they used it on Clarke's birthday, so this is a very unexpected surprise.
Clarke makes sure that Lexa doesn't miss a second of her while she fixes the toy on herself.
It seems to work, Lexa's eyes are glued to Clarke's center, imagining what will happen next.
"So where were we?" Clarke asks, already wearing the appendage. When Lexa has nothing to say, Clarke takes over. "Oh, right," she puts her hands on Lexa's thighs, caressing them teasingly before parting them wide.
Lexa just stares at her wife, completely at Clarke's mercy; her wetness glistening in her exposed pussy.
"I don't remember sharing this with you, but..." Clarke leans forward, her face inches from Lexa's. She places her hands on the mattress on either side of Lexa's head. "...I really, really..." She rubs the tip of the dildo against Lexa's lips. "...wanted to fuck you hard."
"Jok..." Lexa curses and lets her back fall all over the bed, Clarke's teasing driving her already overstimulated body crazy.
Even though Clarke is being assertive, she's actually making an enormous effort to control the urge to just shove the toy inside Lexa and fuck her senseless. Instead, she simply kisses her again with all the passion she can muster. Satisfied, Clarke carefully holds Lexa's legs and pulls her to the edge of the bed. She plants her feet on the floor to have a better balance for what she's about to do.
Yes, they've used it before - once - but Lexa feels a little intimidated by the toy and its size, but somehow, she enjoys the thrill of it.
"Look at me," Clarke commands. Once she has Lexa's eyes on hers, she aligns the appendage with Lexa's opening. Without breaking eye contact and in the most sensual way possible, she sinks the length of the dildo into her wife.
Lexa groans and throws her head back; the feeling of Clarke filling her is driving her crazy. The first time they did this she was on top to give her a sense of control over the action, but now to be completely passive is a new and exciting experience.
Clarke lets out a groan of her own at how easily the toy sank into Lexa. She struggles to keep her composure, seeing her so vulnerable and willing. But soon she focuses on something else. "Is this okay?" Clarke asks concerned.
A wholehearted and awkward series of nods is all Lexa can offer.
It would have been funny for Clarke if she wasn't so turned on and desperate to take Lexa. So, with Lexa's permission, she begins to move. She pushes into Lexa, slowly at first, building up a rhythm.
Lexa writhes and moans, this is getting so good and fast. She grinds her hips up instinctively, looking for more speed.
Not needing much encouragement, Clarke gives in. She rocks faster and faster on Lexa until her moans become little screams. It only fuels her desire, what little control Clarke has is lost with every cry of pleasure from her woman. "Fuck it," Clarke mumbles to herself before lifting Lexa's legs and pumping hard into Lexa's pussy.
That's all Lexa can stand. A few more well-aimed thrusts and a muffled scream later, Lexa comes with an orgasm that spreads from her center to the top of her head, almost knocking her out.
Clarke watches with open mouth as Lexa's body trembles in the throes of her climax. It doesn't matter how many times they do this; she will never stop marveling at the beauty of their lovemaking.
After a moment, Clarke pulls back, once again having to control her desires as Lexa lets out a long moan at the feeling of the dildo slipping away from her.
It is a hot mess between Clarke's legs, but she is in no hurry, waiting patiently for Lexa to come down from her high to continue their sexual reconnection. In the meantime, she carefully removes the toy from herself, ignoring the accidental nice feeling it gives her.
Panting and sweating, with her body still humming with pleasure, Lexa manages. "After I regain my senses, it's my turn." She points to the dildo.
Clarke's face lights up with a very naughty and expectant grin. But soon the expression changes and her jaw drops at Lexa's next words.
" I would love to take you from behind."
And to think that their wedding night has just begun.
...
Octavia, channeling the gentlewoman in her, accompanies Anna to her room in one of the workers' dormitories in Polis after the party is over.
On the way, they make small talk, reminiscing about the events of the wedding. They deliberately avoid mentioning the bouquet Anna is happily carrying.
Finally, they reach their destination.
Anna can feel some tension growing on Octavia's face, but trying to brush it off, she turns to say goodbye.
Octavia has other plans, however, "Anna," she calls out in all seriousness.
"Hmm?" Anna looks at Octavia expectantly.
The General looks around as if considering something. She hesitates but finally speaks. "You know, what Raven has been hinting at all night..."
Now it makes sense to the younger healer why Octavia was so apprehensive. Raven's comments and actions were indeed very inopportune, so whatever she was hinting at, Anna didn't want to make it bigger than it actually was. She also didn't want to make Octavia uncomfortable, so she interrupts her. "It's okay Octavia, you don't have to explain, she's your friend. I have friends too, they do this sometimes, I get it." She tries to sound as reassuring as possible.
"Yes, yes..." Octavia nervously agrees. She swallows to gain a few more seconds but finally confesses. "But it's actually true... I mean, what she implied... it's true."
Anna heard the words; her brain understood the meaning, but somehow, she can't wrap her head around it. She just stares at Octavia, blinking rapidly.
Sensing the girl's inability to answer, Octavia decides to be straightforward. "I like you, Anna. I really like you and..." She sighs and pauses before continuing, "...and I see something happening between us; I want something to happen between us..."
The young healer can't help but watch in awe as Octavia pronounces the words, she's fantasized about hearing so often.
Meanwhile, Octavia gets lost in a memory, a memory of the conversation she had with Lincoln in the spirit world.
"It's been almost seventeen years Lincoln; how dare they believe I'm not ready!"
"The fact you are here, in the spirit world talking with me is proof enough you're not ready."
This fragment of their exchange is what gave Octavia the push she needed to open her heart and admit without reservation. "...but I'm not ready." She makes sure her eyes meet Anna's before continuing. "The truth is, I've never done this before, I've never really been in a relationship, at least not a normal one; I still have some things to figure out. My heart has been... numb for so long; I need to learn how to feel again, I need to heal. It wasn't long ago that I discovered how; it's going to be hard, but I'm working on it." Octavia exhales, feeling the weight in her chest lift, and doesn't stop until the last thing on her mind has been said. "I think I'm making some progress, and if I'm honest, being close to you helps, it's good for me. But I... I'm not there yet; I'm not ready for a relationship, a romantic one. Not now." She finishes with a vulnerable look on her face, hoping that Anna doesn't take this the wrong way, hoping that she understands.
Anna can see that Octavia has put her feelings and thoughts right in front of her. She doesn't know why this keeps happening to her; what she has done to deserve this wonderful but hurt woman to trust her so much. But just like the first time when she was a kid and then at the clinic, she feels honored. Putting aside her own disbelief - because Octavia needs her now - Anna walks closer to her and grabs her arm before calmly answering. "Octavia, I'm not asking for anything more than what you're willing to offer. You take your time, learn what you have to learn, heal what you need to heal. I will be here to accompany and support you; that is, if you have me, of course." Then, tightening her grip a bit and following the same line of honesty Octavia just showed, Anna makes an admission of her own. "Besides, I have waited more than a decade for what I believed to be a dream; surely I can wait a little longer for a possible reality."
Octavia's heart skips a beat at this statement. She looks into Anna's face for a sign of doubt or something but finds nothing but truth. Still, she can't utter a word.
Taking this small triumph in her stride, Anna lets go of Octavia's arm and instead leans close to her ear to whisper teasingly. "And in case it wasn't clear enough, I like you too." As a final touch of glory, she plants a soft, lingering kiss on Octavia's cheek.
The display of affection catches Octavia off guard. She gasps and closes her eyes at the contact; a comforting warmth runs through her body. She doesn't know how long it lasts, but when Octavia opens her eyes, Anna has already entered the dormitories, flashing a cheeky smile in her direction before closing the door.
Standing in front of the building, stunned, Octavia is not sure what just happened. "Did she say more than..." She wonders, "Did she..." She covers her cheek with her hand, the feel of Anna's kiss, still present on her skin. "But what..." Octavia may be confused and have a thousand theories in her head, but there's only one thing she's sure of. 'Oh, I'm fucked... I'm so, so fucked.'
...
One month later
It has been a crazy few weeks for the wives.
After returning from their short honeymoon in their secret garden, Lexa and Clarke began preparations for their long-awaited departure from Polis.
They didn't have a specific place to go, they agreed to have an adventure and visit all the towns and villages they could reach.
Truth be told, neither of them had the time to really appreciate the places they traveled to as commanders because of all the responsibilities. But now, with nothing tying them down, they were free to enjoy the world and perhaps explore areas they didn't know well.
They were truly excited about what awaited them and ready to discover and learn more about the planet they had saved. They could figure out where to settle later, there was no rush.
Now, just one night before the big day, Clarke and Lexa find themselves in the most meaningful place for both of them in the tower, the throne room.
"So many memories in here, huh?" Clarke voices, looking around the large room.
"So many..." Lexa replies absent-mindedly, joining Clarke in her observation.
Clarke moves on, appreciating every piece of furniture, every corner; each one encapsulating a special moment in time.
Lexa follows closely, doing the same.
Eventually, Clarke leads them to another place that is meaningful to both of them. She opens the doors to the balcony and together they walk to the railing where they lean.
"It seems a long time ago," Clarke comments with a certain edge of wonderment.
"Yeah," Lexa has to agree. "Sometimes it doesn't even feel like it was my life anymore."
They remain silent for a while, having their own memories, admiring the city below.
Finally, after some internal reflection and a little hesitation, Clarke asks. "Do you think it was the right thing to do? Quitting?"
Lexa turns to Clarke and offers a kind smile. She can see that Clarke feels guilty, both for leaving her people and for feeling this way, because she doesn't want Lexa to think she has regrets. But Lexa, more than anyone, understands the responsibility of being a commander. She would never dare to judge Clarke because she knows the weight of it, the sacrifice, and the pain. Being Heda leaves a mark that will probably never be completely erased from their minds. Still, growing up in this new world of peace has taught her that there are other things worth living for, like family, freedom, love. That's the advantage of having lived two lives; she has the experience to compare and make a clear judgment. With all that in mind, Lexa offers.
"We paid our dues, Clarke. All we had to give we gave, all we had to do we did. We were willing to fight and die for these people, we saved them." Lexa takes Clarke's hand. "A leader must know when it is time to step back and give someone the chance to offer new ideas, new ways to make our world a better place. A leader must know when it is time to live. Don't worry, you have nothing to feel bad about." She kisses Clarke's hand and as a final sentiment, she adds. "I know I don't anymore. Ever since I decided to share my life with you. I don't."
Clarke exhales, relieved. "You're right. I know you're right." She says with a sincere smile. But she can't help but admit. "But I'm going to miss it here."
Lexa chuckles and confesses. "Me too."
They enjoy the panoramic view in silence for a few more minutes.
As it gets cold, they make their way back inside the throne room.
Clarke instinctively searches for Lexa's arms and nuzzles her nose in her wife's neck.
There, embracing and comforting each other they give one last look to the room that in a way shaped them as the humans and leaders they are now.
…
It is still dark outside.
Clarke and Lexa decided to get up very early to leave the city before it got busy. They really didn't want to attract any unnecessary attention.
When they are packed and ready to go, Indra picks them up at their bedroom door to accompany them.
"The horses are already outside the tower," Indra informs them as they walk to the elevators.
"Good, good," Clarke replies a little distracted.
"I bet you're very excited, huh?" Indra says to both of them.
"Yes, we are!" Lexa answers eagerly.
"Nervous too, but yes, excited," Clarke admits.
"I see," Indra comments, also happy for the couple. "I'm sure your journey will be filled with adventures and many things to learn. Just enjoy your time together and let the spirits guide you. That's the advice she offers.
They continue to chat until they reach the first floor.
Before they can get out of the elevator, Indra bids her farewell. "Take care of yourselves." She hugs the women affectionately. "Don't worry about us, we'll be fine."
"Thank you, Indra."
"We will."
They continue on their way to the main doors of the tower.
Of course, their loved ones are waiting for them, ready to say goodbye.
"Honey! Abby is the first to embrace her daughter. "Be safe, okay?" She grabs Clarke's face with both hands. "And send me a message as soon as you can."
"I will, Mom," Clarke replies with a kind smile.
After a sad smile back, Abby goes to hug Lexa. "Take care. And don't forget to tell your mother I'm expecting a visit to Arkadia."
"I will let her know as soon as we are in my village, Abby," Lexa answers with a sincere smile, happy that Abby is interested in establishing a relationship with her family.
Raven, already emotional, takes Clarke in her arms. "Ugh, I'm going to miss you." She says into Clarke's shoulder.
"I'll miss you too, Ray." Clarke shares the sentiment.
"Remember to charge your device once you rest. I'll be expecting updates, okay?" Raven points to the device she gave Clarke the day before.
"Yes, boss!" Clarke jokingly salutes, switching now to embrace Octavia.
"Don't be a stranger," the General says, letting go of her friend.
"I won't," Clarke confirms.
Raven and Octavia hug Lexa as well.
"Take care of my friend warrior." Octavia orders, feigning seriousness.
"You better, it's your duty! Raven joins the friendly warning.
"Yes, ma'ams," Lexa nods with conviction and amusement.
"Dear," Roda, who has been respectfully waiting for her friends and family to bid their farewells first, now calls.
Clarke acknowledges the woman immediately.
"I made you a few things to take with you on your way. It's not much, but it'll be enough to get you through the day." Roda hands Clarke a container of food.
"Oh, Roda." Clarke takes the container but then hands it to Lexa so she can hug the woman. "I'm going to miss your delicious cooking." She admits wholeheartedly as they pull away.
"I will always be at your service, my child, wherever you are. You just have to let me know and I will be there." Roda offers in all seriousness.
Clarke looks pleadingly at Lexa who just shrugs with a smirk.
With her wife's silent blessing, Clarke says. "I will keep it in mind." She winks at the older woman.
"Ladies, it's getting late." Indra, always the voice of reason, reminds the women. "You better hurry."
The reminder jolts everyone into action.
"Uh, wait." Clarke looks around. "Where's Luna, she said she'd be here to say goodbye."
"Oh, she told me she would be waiting outside," Indra informs. "So, if you don't mind..." She shows the ladies the way, silently motioning for the guards to open the doors.
Clarke and Lexa waste no time in going outside, but what they see there stops them dead in their tracks.
The people of Polis are gathered right in front of the tower, leaving only a small path along to the gates of the city.
The women look at each other in amazement and confusion.
Fortunately, there's someone there to clarify the situation.
"You don't think I would let you go without a proper farewell from your people, do you?" Luna says as she approaches the two.
"What do you... I mean..." Clarke has no idea what's going on.
"Our people?" Lexa asks just as confused as Clarke.
Luna chuckles but explains. "I'm sorry I caught you off guard with this surprise, but I thought it was necessary." She then puts a hand on each of Lexa's and Clarke's shoulders as she explains. "We are simply here to show our gratitude for everything you have done for us. You both saved us all from doom. We all watched you fight for us, risk your lives for us, die for us." Luna gives Lexa a glance before she continues. "And we thought it was important for us to see you go and find your own happiness. Now that your work is done and we are safe, we wanted to pay our respects and wish you two the best."
Clarke, who had been trying to keep his composure, becomes emotional.
Lexa, more collected, lets her emotions show with a big smile. She takes Clarke's hand in reassurance.
"I don't know what to say." Clarke lets out with a broken voice.
Luna smiles. "You don't have to say anything. You can both go in peace and with a clear mind. I'll take it from here."
"Thank you for that, Luna." Lexa expresses sincerely.
"It's all well deserved, my friend." Luna voices confidently.
The two former commanders and the current one share a group hug.
The people of Polis cheer and applaud at the moving demonstration.
As they part, they stare out into the crowd with smiles of gratitude.
Then Luna offers her final words. "Remember, this is your home, you will always be welcome as the heroes that you are." She looks briefly at Indra and decrees, "May this be put on record".
Indra assents her acknowledgment.
With the formalities out of the way, Luna extends her hand to Clarke and recites the most meaningful words in the Grounder culture, ones that carry more than a simple farewell significance, but also one of hope. "May we meet again."
Clarke can only respond in kind. "May we meet again."
Lexa and Luna's exchange carries another sentiment. It's the final goodbye to the dark past their kind shared, a blood-stained fate that haunted them for years, but which they have now decided to put behind them.
"May we meet again, Lexa."
"May we meet again, Luna."
The commanders' final words of farewell seem to be the queue for Clarke and Lexa to finally leave.
They walk slowly to their horses.
Before Clarke can get on, Abby runs and gives Clarke another hug, this time a tearful one.
Clarke embraces the woman tightly before letting go. "Take care, Mom." With those last words, she climbs onto the animal.
Lexa follows.
They both look back at their friends and family, who wave at them with mixed expressions of happiness and sadness.
"Shall we?" Lexa says to Clarke, unable to contain the eagerness in her voice.
Clarke locks her eyes with Lexa's and states. "Lead the way."
As their horses slowly make their way down the open path that leads them to the gates of Polis, the people who have gathered to see them leave, bow.
"Heda."
"Wanheda"
These are the words each person utters as they pass them on their way out.
The sight of them bowing their heads, saying their former titles with such solemnity, showing the utmost respect, finally makes Lexa break down.
Lexa's eyes fill with tears of joy.
Clarke is in a similar state.
They look at each other with tearful but happy faces. They have done something meaningful that has marked the lives of their people, it fills them with a complete sense of accomplishment, a sense of pride.
The sacrifices, the tears, the pain, the death... it was all worth it in the end; the world is now at peace.
As they pass through the great gates of the city, they take a last look back to see the people waving and cheering happily.
Gradually, the distance makes it difficult to watch any longer, so they settle into their horses and simply ride on.
They fall into a comfortable silence; contemplating, reminiscing.
After a good while, and with her heart at ease, Clarke asks sweetly.
"Where to, my dear wife?"
Lexa looks at Clarke with a grin, she will never get tired of that word. She sighs, glances at the horizon for a moment before returning her gaze to Clarke.
"Where the spirits lead us." It is Lexa's optimistic answer.
And Clarke has no objections. "Sounds perfect to me."
Their horses trot off to fulfill their previously interrupted journey of love, finally leading them not only to survive but to live.
Together, at last.
