Chapter 6
Bella leaned against the cold Steel of Jasper's truck, feeling the sharp bite of winter wind through her jacket. The school break had offered a rare respite from the constant presence of Edward, allowing her time to focus on strengthening her shield and other plans with Jasper. Her thoughts drifted back to their recent training sessions in the dense, misty woods of the Pacific Northwest, where her shield had smashed through a boulder with ease.
Jasper, standing beside her, glanced over with an approving nod. "You're making incredible progress, Bella. We do need to keep this under wraps. If Carlisle suspects the true extent of your abilities, he'll try to control you even more." Bella sighed, pulling her coat tighter. "I know. It's exhausting, pretending to comply with Carlisle's plans. But it's the only way we can ensure that I won't be forced into anything against my will." Jasper's hand rested on hers, a grounding presence. "We'll get through this. Together."
The conversation shifted as they drove back towards the house after a rather long training session, the crisp air carrying the scent of pine and the distant hum of holiday preparations. Bella broke the silence with another question. "Jasper, why is Carlisle insisting on so much security for a simple New Year's Eve party?" Jasper's gaze darkened slightly. "Carlisle's not just planning a party. It's a show of strength. He wants to demonstrate that his coven is strong, united, and not easily threatened. It's likely tied to whatever he's planning for you." Bella frowned, the pieces of the puzzle clicking into place. "So, it's all about appearances. And control." "Exactly," Jasper confirmed. "He wants to ensure that no one doubts his authority, or the safety of his coven. Bella sighed, feeling the weight of Carlisle's manipulations pressing down on her. "It's always about control with him."
Jasper's expression softened as he changed the subject. "Speaking of security, I'll be calling in some reinforcements. My best friends—Peter and Charlotte. They're part of my coven, and they've been with me through thick and thin." Bella's eyes lit up with interest. "Tell me more about them. I want to know who will be helping us."
Jasper's features softened with fondness. "Peter is like a brother to me. We met during the Southern Wars, and he's one of the few who saw beyond the violence. He helped me stay whole under Maria's control and find a semblance of peace. Charlotte was a newborn we saved; she's strong, smart, and fiercely loyal. They're my family."
Bella smiled, touched by Jasper's obvious affection for his friends. "I'd like to meet them. Could you invite them to join us for Christmas at the Swan house?" Jasper nodded. "I think they'd enjoy that. I'll call them tonight." "And what about Garrett and Anthony?" Bella asked, curious.
"Garrett's an old friend—a revolutionary in every sense," Jasper explained. "He's got a knack for stirring things up and seeing the bigger picture. Anthony's his sidekick, a bit of a wildcard but reliable when it counts. They're both invaluable in a fight and a lot of fun to be around." Bella's curiosity grew as she learned more about Jasper's friends. "I'm looking forward to meeting all of them. It sounds like we'll have quite the team."
That evening, Jasper made the call to Peter and Charlotte. Their conversation was brief but filled with warmth and anticipation. Jasper outlined the situation, the need for security, and the invitation to spend Christmas with Bella and her father. Peter's voice crackled with enthusiasm over the line. "We'll be there, Jasper. It'll be good to see you again and meet this girl who's got you all twisted up." Jasper chuckled, his eyes glinting with amusement. "You'll like her, Peter. She's something special." Charlotte's voice was softer but equally supportive. "Count us in, Jasper. We'll bring Garrett and Anthony along too. It sounds like we've got a lot to discuss."
Jasper hung up the phone with a sense of satisfaction. His family was coming, and for the first time in years, he felt a flicker of hope.
Meanwhile, Bella prepared for Christmas Eve with a flurry of activity. She had carefully selected gifts for her friends from La Push—a new rod and reel for Charlie, fishing supplies for Billy and Jacob, and lavender bath products for the women. For Jasper, she found a Civil War-era ring, gold inlaid with evergreen jasper stone and Texas ebony wood, a tribute to his heritage and their growing bond. Enjoying the Christmas music playing as she wrapped each gift and put them under the tree. As Christmas Eve arrived, the Swan house was filled with warmth and laughter. Guests from La Push mingled with Jasper, Peter, Charlotte, Garrett, and Anthony, creating a lively and diverse gathering. Emmett and Rosalie showed up unexpectedly, but their presence added to the festive atmosphere. Bella had meticulously prepared the menu, ensuring there was something for everyone, including a special blood-infused drink for the vampires. The recipe had been found in the borrowed books, adding a nice touch of Christmas cheer for her vampire friends. "This is amazing," Garrett declared, raising his glass in a toast. "To new friends and unexpected alliances!"
The evening was filled with stories, games, and the sound of holiday music. Jasper found himself enjoying the company of his friends and the warmth of Bella's home. Emmett and Rosalie, though initially wary, relaxed as the night progressed, finding common ground with Jasper in their shared interests. "I didn't know you were into gaming," Emmett said, a grin spreading across his face as he and Jasper discussed the latest console games. "We should hang out more often." Jasper nodded, pleased by the camaraderie. "I'd like that. It's been a while since I had someone to talk games with." Rosalie, who had been listening quietly, added, "It's good to see you happy, Jasper. We've had our differences, but I think we can find a way to work together." Jasper's expression softened. "Thank you, Rosalie. I appreciate that."
As the evening slowed down and the guests departed with promises to return for Christmas Day, Jasper and Bella found themselves alone in the quiet house, cleaning up the remnants of the party. The warmth of the evening lingered in the air, a comforting contrast to the cold night outside.
"I never got to give you your gift," Bella said, pulling out the small box she had carefully wrapped. Jasper's eyes widened with surprise. "Bella, you didn't have to—" "I wanted to," Bella insisted, handing him the box. "Open it." Jasper unwrapped the gift, revealing the ring. His breath caught as he examined it, the gold band inlaid with jasper stone and ebony wood. "Bella, this is... incredible. Thank you." Bella smiled, her eyes shining. "I thought you'd like it."
Jasper reached into his pocket and pulled out a velvet box. "I have something for you too." Bella opened the box to find a delicate ring, its band infused with Jasper's venom and strands of his hair, a chocolate oval diamond gleaming at its center Jasper also included a long chain knowing that it would be a while before Bella could wear the ring on her finger. Tears welled in her eyes as she looked up at Jasper. "It's beautiful," Bella whispered, overcome with emotion. "Thank you, Jasper." They exchanged their gifts in the quiet of the night, their bond deepening as they shared a moment of unspoken understanding and affection.
The next morning, the Swan house buzzed with anticipation as guests returned to open presents and share breakfast. Conversations about how to protect Bella and Jasper from Carlisle's schemes filled the air, but there was also laughter and the warmth of friendship.
At the Cullen house, however, the mood was starkly different. Edward brooded over Bella's absence, his anger at being excluded from her plans evident in every tense line of his body. His frustration at spending Christmas Eve without Bella, while she celebrated with her friends from La Push and Jasper's family, only fueled his determination to bind her to him through his New Year's Eve proposal.
Jasper and Bella, aware of the challenges that lay ahead, faced the future with a newfound sense of hope and resilience. Surrounded by friends and allies, they were ready to confront whatever Carlisle had in store, confident in their bond and their shared resolve.
Two Days After Christmas
The Swan home was unusually silent, the festive decorations contrasting starkly with the tension hanging in the air. Bella was upstairs, trying to stave off the creeping anxiety that had become her constant companion since Edward and Alice's unexpected visit that morning. She paced her room, casting a baleful glance at the hideous dress Alice had picked out for her. The door creaked open, and Alice breezed in with her usual chipper demeanor. "Come on, Bella. It's just one date. You'll have a great time, I promise." Bella stopped pacing and faced Alice, her eyes hard. "Why can't you just let me have a say in my own life? I don't want to go on this date."
Alice's smile faltered slightly, becoming hard and almost angry, but she recovered quickly, her voice taking on a placating tone. "Edward has been planning this for you. He just wants to make up for lost time." With a resigned sigh, Bella allowed Alice to help her into the dress, feeling the fabric constrict her movements and her sense of autonomy. By the time Edward arrived to pick her up, she was already exhausted from the effort of pretending everything was fine.
The fancy restaurant was exactly the kind of place Edward loved—opulent, with an air of old-world charm that he found nostalgic. Bella, however, felt suffocated by the grandeur, her discomfort growing as Edward ordered for her without consultation. "Edward, I don't like Cabernet Sauvignon with fish. I'd prefer a Chardonnay," Bella said, her voice steady but firm as she addressed the waiter and changed the wine order. Edward's smile froze, his eyes darkening. "Bella, you should try to broaden your tastes. Cabernet can be quite enjoyable with the right dish." Her jaw tightened. "I know what I like and red wine does not go with fish."
The waiter nodded, sensing the tension, and left to fetch the new wine. Edward leaned in, his voice a low hiss. "You're being difficult on purpose." Bella's eyes flashed. "I'm just trying to enjoy the evening and you are not the one eating this meal. Why does that have to be a problem?" The dinner continued in strained silence, Bella's irritation simmering just beneath the surface. When they arrived at the show house, her patience snapped entirely.
"A documentary on volcanic eruptions, really?" Bella's voice was incredulous, her eyes widening in disbelief. "This is supposed to be a fun night out, Edward." His grip on her wrist tightened painfully. "Bella, you need to appreciate the beauty of the natural world. This is educational." Her skin paled, but her voice was defiant. "I don't need you to teach me how to appreciate things. I'm leaving." She wrenched her wrist free and began to walk away, her heart pounding. Edward's grip returned, harsher this time, and she winced as his fingers dug into her flesh. "You're not going anywhere," he snarled, his eyes flashing with anger. Bella twisted away, her voice cracking with fear. "Let me go, Edward. Now."
Suddenly, Jasper was there, his presence a cold, calm force. He pried Edward's fingers from Bella's wrist with a strength that belied his composed exterior. "Step back, Edward." Edward glared, his chest heaving, but he released Bella. She stumbled back into Jasper's arms, shaking with a mix of fear and relief. Jasper's gaze never wavered from Edward as he led Bella away.
Back at the Swan Home
Charlie met them at the door, his eyes widening in alarm at Bella's bruised wrist. "What the hell happened?" Bella's voice trembled as she explained, leaving out no detail of Edward's violent outburst. Charlie's face darkened with rage. "That boy is never setting foot in this house again. If I see him near you, I swear, I'll—" Jasper's calm voice interrupted. "I'll make sure Bella is safe. You have my word." Charlie nodded, his shoulders sagging with a mixture of relief and exhaustion. "Thank you, Jasper. I'm counting on you to keep her safe."
The Cottage
Over the next few days, Bella and Jasper retreated to the small cottage on the edge of the Cullen property, a place that had become their sanctuary. Here, they trained tirelessly, refining Bella's shield until it was a seamless extension of her will.
Peter and Char joined them getting ready for the New Years party, their presence a comforting reminder of their growing support network. Peter's sharp wit and Char's gentle encouragement provided a much-needed balance to the intensity of their training sessions. Rose and Emmet had started joining Jasper at the cottage and were becoming friends with Bella, Char and Peter. Jasper had begun to trust Emmet and Rose with more information on what has been going on, letting the conversation flow a bit more freely and surprisingly very productive.
Jasper's Secret MeetingJasper paced the dimly lit forest clearing, his eyes flicking to the treetops where the moonlight filtered through. He had arranged a clandestine meeting with Garrett and Anthony, his thoughts heavy with suspicion. Carlisle's insistence on Bella's transformation and her binding to Edward felt like more than just paternal concern. There was something darker, more calculated behind it, and Jasper needed to uncover the truth. Garrett and Anthony arrived silently, their figures emerging from the shadows. Garrett, a nomad with a keen sense for danger, approached first, his gaze steady. Anthony, more reserved but no less perceptive, followed closely, his eyes scanning their surroundings for any sign of eavesdroppers. Jasper greeted them with a nod. "Thank you both for coming. We have a delicate matter to discuss." Garrett crossed his arms, his curiosity piqued. "What's this about, Jasper? You sounded pretty urgent."
Jasper took a deep breath, his eyes meeting theirs with a determined glint. "It's about Carlisle. I believe he's planning something with Bella and Edward. His push to have Bella transformed and mated to Edward isn't just about family or romantic ideals. There's a larger, more sinister motive at play." Anthony's brows furrowed. "Are you sure, Jasper? Carlisle's always been about keeping the family together. What makes you think this is different?"
Jasper's voice lowered, a note of caution threading through. "I've seen patterns in Carlisle's behavior, his insistence on certain actions that don't add up to simple concern. He's been seeking powerful and gifted vampires, and Bella's transformation fits too neatly into his plans. I need you both to find out who Carlisle's allies are and what exactly he's planning. This needs to be done quietly, without arousing suspicion."
Garrett exchanged a look with Anthony, a silent agreement passing between them. "We'll do it, Jasper. We'll dig into Carlisle's connections and see what we can uncover. But this won't be easy. Carlisle's respected, and his network is extensive. We'll have to tread carefully." Jasper nodded, his expression grim but resolute. "I understand. Keep in touch with me only on this. If Carlisle gets wind of what we're doing, it could jeopardize everything." Garrett placed a reassuring hand on Jasper's shoulder. "We'll find the truth, Jasper. Whatever Carlisle's up to, we'll uncover it." With that, Garrett and Anthony melted back into the shadows, leaving Jasper alone in the clearing, his mind churning with the gravity of their mission.
