"Why would anyone have a problem with having a Slayer here?" Giles asked, very confused. "The good she can do -?

"Can be done by anyone without the sacrifice of a child. Sure it means we have to work together to accomplish what she can do by herself, but that just proves we don't need her. Buffy was what, fifteen, when you did this to her? The stories say little girls as young as twelve, maybe even younger have been 'Chosen' for this so-called honor of yours. And almost none of them manage to live long even with the extra strength, every one Mayor Chase has spoken to about it, labels them sacrifices. No religion supports human sacrifice and hasn't for centuries. Given that you called it a Sacred Calling, suggests you really do have a religious belief in sacrificing little girls and it's completely unnecessary as humans can handle the problem themselves. Religious beliefs are one thing and the law protects the right to believe how you want, but religious practices that violate the law aren't tolerated. Mayor Chase needs information to determine whether we should even allow her to hunt vampires in Sunnydale. He has to know the impact on her, how much of a necessity hunting is for her, not for you. And you better have satisfactory answers because he killed the last man who didn't have satisfactory answers to his questions."

"He killed a man?! Why?"

"Remember I told you the founder of Sunnydale worked the willful avoidance spell?"

"I do believe you mentioned that yesterday." Giles confirmed. "What does that have to do with anything?"

"Because Mayor Richard Wilkins the I, II and III was the same man, he worked the spell so he could sacrifice people without anyone noticing. He was a black Magic user who used Magic to make himself immortal. He became very powerful and his end goal was to turn himself into a demon. Mr. Chase realized there had never been a mayoral election in Sunnydale and he did some digging to find out why. At first he wasn't sure investigating was a good idea, Sunnydale has been a haven for us since it was founded, he didn't want to risk that. But the more he dug, the more questions he had and he found that every few decades Richard Wilkins became his own son, declared himself the Mayor and no one noticed. He found out about the willful avoidance spell after he confronted Wilkins and in order to continue to protect the hidden groups in Sunnydale, he decided to keep it going. Unfortunately, Sunnydale had gained a reputation as a safe haven for more than just people like Wolfbloods. Wilkins never knew we even exist, Mr. Chase's grandfather claimed to be an animal behaviorist and conservationist and had convinced Wilkins, back when he was Wilkins the First, that having wolves in the National Forest would make him look like someone with concerns for preserving endangered species or at least he thought he'd convinced him. Turns out Wilkins agreed to having wolves in the National Forest because he could use them as a scapegoat. Wild animal attacks were one of the code phrases for a vamp attack. We were a group he endangered without realizing he'd endangered us. We could have been wiped out by another wolf purge. You can understand why Mr. Chase took exception to finding that out. Combined with everything else, especially considering that thousands of humans have died in the last century in Sunnydale, killing Wilkins was a merciful way of dealing with him."

"How did he manage to stop someone as powerful as you claim this Wilkins was?" Giles asked. "Given that until you knew about the willful avoidance spell shows you're not immune to Magic, it seems unlikely anyone, even someone that can turn into a wolf, could defeat someone such as you describe."

"He shot him. Magic has it's uses, but in the end, almost nothing can survive a large caliber bullet to the brain. Or a wood chipper. And if you're wondering why no one is running in here screaming about hearing about one person killing another." Alex lifted a medallion out from under his shirt. "Magic has it's uses when used responsibly. No one, not even Willow, who's standing not two feet from us can hear us talking. If fact, as far she's concerned, you just came out of your office. This entire conversation has taken place inside your head and this medallion is still under my shirt. You know Magic exists, but you're careless enough to leave books on it where curious teenagers can find them and never noticed I checked out those books. I wonder why. After school, Mayor Chase requests that you make your way to City Hall and be prepared to answer his questions."

"And if I don't?!" Giles asked stiffly.

"His cursory background check shows you're here on a Green Card, how hard would it be for a very wealthy, very connected Mayor with lawyers on both his and the city's retainer to have it revoked? After school, Mr. Giles and your answers better be damn good, because it's most definitely a possibility."

Withdrawing from the spell, Alex turned to Willow. "It's nice of you to be concerned, but you don't need to worry about me, Willow, I'll be just fine."
