"Dr. Giles, so nice of you to join me." Mayor Charles Chase greeted Rupert Giles as he was escorted into the Mayor's office.
"It was made quite clear to me that refusing was not my best option." The British man said stiffly. "Considering my green card was being threatened."
"Yes, your green card. Let's start there, shall we? I'm told just the process of applying for a green card takes approximately 3 years and usually up to 2 additional years to actually get one. Which means you were preparing to come to the United States as much as five years before Buffy Summers was 'Chosen' to be a Slayer. Did you know that far in advance that she would be 'Chosen'?"
"Of course not, which Potential is activated is completely random, we have no idea which one will be Chosen ahead of time."
"Really? Miss Summers activated on her birthday last January and she told Alex that, that very same day a man showed up and told her she'd been Chosen. How did he find her so fast if he didn't know ahead of time she would be Chosen?"
"We use Magic to locate which girl has activated."
"Still doesn't explain how he found her so quickly. Even flying to Los Angeles involves logistics, getting a ticket on an available flight, flight time to get there. That takes time and implies he had to be in the United States at least before he arrived. Which implies whatever organization you're a part of has people stationed in various countries just waiting to be directed to find the newest girl Chosen. Which implies a well established organization. Hidden, as a number of other groups are. You're not a recognized religion, yet you claim a Sacred Calling for these Chosen. Little girls that everyone except your organization see as sacrifices. Or maybe you do see them as sacrifices."
"Not sacrifices, but we do believe the gods Choose and create them, to protect humans."
"I don't see how or why. Gods don't sacrifice humans, humans sacrifice humans, often to gods and it's completely unnecessary. Humans are more than capable of dealing with cockroaches like vampires all on their own."
"But why should we?" Rupert Giles was quite confused by this attitude. "They're stronger than us, therefore someone stronger should be Chosen to deal with them."
"Alex told you how I dealt with Mayor Wilkins, did he not?"
"Yes, he did."
"A bullet weighs only a few grams and yet it can cause an enormous amount of damage. We don't need strength to fight, we need intelligence. The very idea of the Slayer is the antithesis of that. Your organization is hiding behind a child. My people hide because we know people fear the unknown and many will want to harm us based on that fear. But we don't hide behind children and we don't sacrifice children in exchange for our safety. That's cowardly."
Giles glared at the man sitting calmly behind the desk and wanted to protest the frank commentary and opened his mouth to do so, but before he could Charles Chase spoke again.
"Now, to continue, Miss Summers' history has come to my attention. Following being told she'd been 'Chosen', her life began to fall apart. Her social standing declined, culminating in her burning down the gym at Hemery High School, which she told Alex was full of vampires and I don't doubt that it was full of vampires. Then she ran away for a time and when she returned, she was institutionalized. Her parents marriage fell apart and your organization did nothing to help her. Someone you consider 'Chosen' for a Sacred Calling. Why didn't you try to help her? Would it have called attention to your organization, were you hiding again? Saving yourself at her expense. Or did you consider her damaged goods and not worth helping? Or is finding them and aiming them at monsters all you do?"
"We give them a great deal of assistance in their task." Giles insisted. "We maintain records of every known demon, their strengths and their weaknesses. We train them to use their inherent abilities to the best of their ability. We do help them!"
"There's no magical protections on her or on you for that matter. You carelessly leave books on Magic and demons where children can find them. Or are you not being careless, are other children sacrifices as well? Their lives lost to Magic with no true understanding if it, because after all, if it was dangerous, books on real Magic wouldn't be carelessly left where children can find them, now would they?"
"Having them in the Library is convenient, it's where I work after all."
"I'd like to know just how you got that job, you're incredibly overqualified to be a High School Librarian. Doctorates and an employment history that includes the British Museum for nearly two decades. The willful avoidance spell doesn't account for it because it's meant to keep people from really noticing the hidden, unless you used Magic to help 'hide' yourself perhaps? Make it so no one looks too closely. Alex and Cordelia tell me the Driving Instructor is a sexist pig. Between him and you, I think I need to take a good hard look at the school and the school board. It also makes me wonder how much research on Sunnydale you did before you arrived. Logically, you did some. Obviously, you didn't about Wolfbloods or Mayor Wilkins but did you know about the deaths Mayor Wilkins both committed and allowed by covering up vampire activity? The stories about the Slayer say she can usually be found where there are large numbers of vampires, did you arrange for Buffy Summers to come to Sunnydale?"
"I can't answer your questions, I don't have those answers."
"Someone has them, eventually I will get answers. I'm tenacious."
