Bella
I raise my hands in the air in a quiet cheer when Ella finally falls asleep. Carefully, and all so quietly, I back away from her bassinet and lay down on the bed. I let out a huge sigh, ready to fall asleep at least thirty minutes. I've read in a book that it's good to sleep whenever she sleeps and trust me, I make the most out of my sleep.
The first week of Ella's life has been nothing but full of bliss and learned lessons when it comes to a newborn baby. As much as it has been wonderful adjusting to motherhood, it has also been a challenge but I wouldn't change it for the world. Ella is my entire life now. She's already a Daddy's Girl as well. She has Edward wrapped around her finger. I can look at him interacting with Ella for hours and never get tired of it. The tenderness in which he holds her, the softness in his voice when he is speaking to her and that look in his eyes, that look filled with a father's love for his daughter.
To think back in time, today, just a year ago I was planning Alice's bachelorette party in Vegas with Rosalie. If someone had told me that I would have ended up sleeping with my best friend, I would have laughed. And to follow that up with finding out a month later that I was pregnant, I would have died of hysterical laughter.
If someone had told me during that time when I was planning my best friend's bachelorette party that in a year, I'd be putting my baby - Edward's baby - to sleep to You Are My Sunshine, I would have bet my entire life against it.
And boy was I happy to be wrong.
It was the silence that woke me up. It was too silent. Suspiciously so.. I bolt on the bed, dazed and confused. The room is dark, the window drapes are down and I'm under the covers. I don't remember ever covering myself before falling asleep.
I look at Ella's bassinet. She's not there.
"Ella?"
I walk out of the room, looking into her nursery when I catch a glimpse of Edward on the couch. I sigh in relief when I see Ella sleeping against his bare chest. She's so tiny, all curled up with her little fist against her chin, compared to his big chest. I take my phone from the counter where it was charging, ignoring all the messages from my brother, Alice and my mother and take pictures of them sleeping. Edward is stretched out on the couch, one hand behind his head and the other supports Ella's little bum.
I make a mental note to print these pictures and all the other ones that have suddenly filled my gallery, and leave my phone on the counter. The TV is on some motorcycle program, but the volume is very low. I take a seat on the couch very carefully so as to not wake them and change the channel to Friends. It's the episode where Ross says the wrong name at the altar and Chandler and Monica are trying to find a place to fool around. I really ship Chandler and Monica, I feel like their love is more sincere and true than Ross and Rachel's ever were. Edward sleeps for about two episodes of Friends before Ella starts fussing.
He looks down at her, his lips pouting and eyes squinting as he pats on her back softly and kisses the top of her brown hair. But it's not Daddy's kisses she wants. She wants food. Once Edward's eyes open a little more, he notices me at the other side of the couch and gives me a sleepy smile.
"She's hungry," he says hoarsely.
I sit up and open my arms.
"Hand her to me."
Edward slowly sits up, both his hands supporting our child. Ella is so small, she fits right in Edward's hands. He says she gets it from me since I'm also a very small person. It's only fifty-fifty that she'll either be as short as me or as tall as her father. Edward places her in my arms and makes sure I have a hold on her before letting go.
"Did you have a good sleep?" He asked me and sat next to me. "When I came home you were knocked out cold on the bed."
"I was exhausted," I say.
I pull down my sleep shirt and nursing bra and offer my breast to Ella and she latches on quickly. At first I thought it'd be awkward to breastfeed in front of Edward, but it doesn't bother him at all and I'm surprised it doesn't bother me either. I mean, we've slept together, he's seen me naked and now we have a baby together. He literally saw me give birth to her. There's honestly no room for awkwardness between us anymore.
"Was she asleep when you came home?"
"Nope, she was awake. I was surprised she didn't make any noise while you were asleep. She seemed pretty content laying there. I tucked you in and I brought her out here. We were watching some TV before I fell asleep."
I smile, looking down at our girl.
"Have you noticed she has this really calming personality? Or maybe it isn't her personality, she just radiates all this warmth and peace. I don't know why I was so afraid of her before, she's just so perfect."
"We got a good one." Edward takes my hand in his and kisses it. "Can't believe she's already a week old."
"It's been a crazy week. And I haven't been out of the apartment once and I'm not even upset by it."
"Yeah, me neither. Work doesn't count. But I've talked to Richard and I'm taking the next three weeks off to work from home."
"Really?" I sat up a little. "So you won't have to leave?"
"Nope. He has people who can do some of the things for me, will email me anything of importance and if I need to be in a meeting, I'll do a video-call. I guess he understood my need to be here with you and Ella."
My smile grows bigger.
"Oh, I don't know what I would do without you." I lean and kiss his cheek. "You're the best."
"I try," he says with a smirk.
"She's out." Edward climbs in bed and reaches over to turn off the lamp. "Is it me, or is that song just always in my head?"
"Oh it's the both of us," I reply. We both chuckle. "No wonder she likes it so much. You have a way with melodies."
I tuck my pillow between my arms and my head and turn my body facing Edward. He's in the same position as me, facing me and we're completely surrounded by darkness.
"It's a cute song. The only one I know that's appropriate for children. Unless you want me to sing her something from my music library? You've heard it before."
"No, we're good."
"Thought so."
Edward sighs happily. He's been doing that lately. Lately, it's been the two of us. Just Edward and me. And now our child. Ever since we left the hospital, there was no need for no one else. We're a team, we work together and it works. It's not complicated, it's not anything but blissful. Even getting up at three in the morning to feed her, with Edward is just another perk of sharing Ella with him.
Ella hasn't stopped crying for at least thirty minutes since Edward left to go get Alice and Jasper. They were supposed to be stopping by with Emmett and Rosalie to have lunch with us, since I could use a little social interaction. But it would seem like Ella isn't having it. She is fed, she is changed, she is swaddled but she still won't stop crying.
"Come on, Ella, work with me."
Pat her bottom and slightly swing her from side as I walk back and forth in the living room. Edward walks in with the rest of our family in tow and immediately rushes to my side when he sees Ella is crying her lungs out.
"How long has she been crying?" He asks her, reaching for Ella.
I hand her over and groan, pulling my hair away from my face.
"Since you left. I don't know what she wants."
"It's okay, Bella. She's a baby, babies cry."
"But she's fed and she's changed and she's swaddled, why is she-"
"It's okay, Bella. We're here to help," Alice said, taking Ella from Edward.
"I thought you were here to have lunch with us," I said.
Emmett, Rosalie and Jasper were walking in behind them with bags of groceries and cleaning supplies.
"Yes, but we aren't expecting you to do the cooking and such. We're here to help you," Alice continued, bouncing Ella in her arms. "The guys will cook while Rosalie and I help with the laundry and cleaning."
"What am I supposed to do then?"
Edward pointed to our bedroom down the hall. "Go take a nap. Shower if you want. Take a bath, even. Just let us take care of you and Ella."
"But-"
"No buts, little sis. Your little behind is getting back to your bedroom and taking a much needed rest," emmett said from the kitchen as they were taking out the groceries.
"But-"
"No buts!" Rosalie walked over to me, turned me around and walked me back to my bedroom. "Relax, take a nap, enjoy a couple of hours of rest while we make lunch. No objections!"
"But-"
"Nope. I love you, but I do not want to see you out there until lunch is ready."
And before I could protest some more, she shut the door to my bedroom. I sighed, still able to hear Ella fussing in the living room, but if my ears don't betray me, I think Edward is telling Emmett to warm up some water for her formula.
I won't lie, I do need some rest and Edward is perfectly capable of taking care of Ella. With another deep sigh, I fall back in bed and it's not long after, I drift to sleep.
I'm awake, showered and having lunch with everyone an hour and a half later. The nap and shower helped me feel human again, so I was thankful they'd forced me to do so and for the delicious food we were eating. Thankfully, Edward was able to get Ella to settle down and she was currently down for her nap.
"Oh, we need to tell you guys the great news," Rosalie said between bites.
"What is it?" Edward asked.
"We picked a date!" She said, clapping her hands excitedly. "Our wedding will be on August 24th! That way Ella will be old enough for Bella to join my bachelorette party in Vegas!"
Both Edward and I laugh awkwardly. We had this conversation not that long ago because we both knew this was funny.
"Oh Rosalie, that's great," I said, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible. "But uh, I think I'll pass on the bachelorette party. Last time I was in Las Vegas, I got knocked up."
"Yeah, I'll pass too but you guys go wild!" Edward gives them a thumbs up and winks.
"Oh come on! It's not like the both of you will get drunk, have sex again and have another baby. Who knows, Bella might get knocked up by Jasper this time."
"Hey!" Alice snaps from the living room where she was checking on Ella. "Not funny."
"Rosalie, it's not that, I was being sarcastic. What I meant is that by that time, Ella will only be three months old and we can't leave the baby alone."
"You won't leave her alone, you'll leave her with your parents," she said as if it was an obvious solution.
"We could, but that doesn't mean we will. Ella has to remain on her schedule, she needs Bella and I here to take care of her. We are sorry about this but I don't think there's a way we can work around this," Edward said with a slight shrug.
Emmett squeezes my shoulder supportively and just as he's about to say something, Rosalie says, "That means we have to push back the wedding again."
"No, no, no!" Edward and I say in unison.
"You guys don't have to push your wedding back because of us," I say. "You've already had to because of my pregnancy and you don't have to do it again because of Ella being so young. We'll be there at your wedding, obviously. I'm your maid of honor. It's just that I want to keep Ella on her schedule and if we do any minor changes, it throws her off completely."
"We really do hope you guys can understand. I know you didn't sign up for this when you asked me to be best man and Bella your maid of honor." Edward reaches over and takes my hand. "We are trying to be there the best we can."
Emmett looks at Rosalie. "We can do that, can't we Rose? You were the one who said we needed to be supportive of them."
Rose nods with a slight pout to her lips.
"Yeah, I suppose. I just wish you could join, but I understand. You have responsibilities."
"Ohhh… I think someone is awake and needs a change," Alice says from the living room.
"Not it!" -Me.
"Not it!" -Edward. I laugh, pointing a finger at him. He lost. "Ugh, fine." He walks over to Alice who hands him Ella. She cringes and fake gags. I roll my eyes at her exaggeration. "Aw, did you crap on Auntie Alice? That's my girl."
"Not funny, Cullen," Alice mutters.
I walk over to Edward and watch as he carefully unwraps Ella from her pink blanket and unbuttons her little outfit. Everyone groans when they get a little glance at Ella's dirty diaper.
"You need to get rid of it!" Emmett says dramatically and faces away from the changing table.
Edward rolls his eyes.
"I'm cleaning her up. I'll throw away the diaper, you ass. I'm not keeping it as a momento."
"No, not the diaper. Ella!"
