Preliminaries
In the Lumiose Stadium, Jonny was facing another trainer named Simon in a battlefield that resembled a town.
The group learned that the preliminaries consisted of trainers facing one another in three-on-three Pokemon battles. The preliminaries will keep on going until only eight trainers remain, and those trainers will advance to the quarterfinals. Jonny and Simon each pull out a pokeball.
"Simisage, go!" shouts Simon, throwing a pokeball and releasing a green, monkey-like Pokemon with a cream-colored chest, hands, feet, and face, white tufts of fur on its shoulders and a large leaf on its head. Nazz, who was in the audience with Kevin, who was holding Plank, and Rolf takes out the pokedex and points it at the Pokemon.
"Simisage, the Thorn Monkey Pokemon, and the evolved form of Pansage. Ill tempered, it fights by swinging its barbed tail around wildly. The leaf growing on its head is very bitter." said the pokedex.
"Simon has started things off with a Simisage; what Pokemon will Jonny bring out?" asked the announcer.
"Ninjask, go!" said Jonny, throwing Ninjask's pokeball and releasing him.
"And Jonny brings out a Ninjask." said the announcer.
"Ninjask, use Screech!" said Jonny. Ninjask lets out a loud shriek and releases soundwaves onto Simisage, weakening its defense.
"Simisage, use Acrobatics!" said Simon. Simisage runs at Ninjask and tackles him several times, dealing super effective damage to him. Ninjask begins surging with energy from his Speed Boost ability and his speed increases.
"Ninjask, X-Scissor!" said Jonny. Ninjask flies at Simisage while his claws glowed blue and he slashes Simisage in an X fashion, dealing super effective damage to it.
"Simisage, Acrobatics!" said Simon. Simisage runs towards Ninjask.
"Double Team!" said Jonny. Ninjask splits into multiple copies of himself; Simisage tackles one of them, but it was only a copy. "Now use Fury Cutter!" The real Ninjask flies towards Simisage and slashes it with his right claw, dealing super effective damage to it.
"Simisage, Acrobatics!" said Simon. Simisage runs at Ninjask and rams him several times, dealing super effective damage. Ninjask begins surging with more energy and his speed increases.
"Fury Cutter once more!" said Jonny. Ninjask slashes Simisage with his right claw, dealing more damage than the previous Fury Cutter, knocking Simisage out.
"Simisage is unable to battle. Ninjask wins the match." said an official.
"Jonny's Ninjask has beaten Simon's Simisage. What will Simon bring out next?" asked the announcer.
"Great job, Ninjask." said Jonny.
"Way to go, man!" cheered Kevin. Simon returns Simisage to its pokeball.
"You did all right, Simisage." said Simon. He puts Simisage's pokeball away and pulls out another one. "Go, Vaporeon!" He throws the pokeball and releases a light blue, quadrupedal Pokemon with a white fin around its neck and a tail that resembles a mermaid's tail. Nazz points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Vaporeon, the Bubble Jet Pokemon, and the evolved form of Eevee. It has evolved to be suitable for an aquatic life. It can invisibly melt away into water." said the pokedex.
"Simon's next Pokemon is a Vaporeon." said the announcer.
"Ninjask, use Fury Cutter!" said Jonny. Ninjask flies at Vaporeon and slashes it with his right claw, dealing damage.
"All right, Vaporeon, use Water Pulse!" said Simon. Vaporeon launches a ball of blue water at Ninjask, hitting him, and dealing damage; he begins flying around dizzily.
"Oh man, Ninjask is confused." said Kevin. Ninjask begins surging with energy and his speed increases.
"Ninjask, use Leech Life!" said Jonny. Ninjask flies towards Vaporeon, but he misses and crashes into one of the small buildings of the battlefield.
"Muddy Water!" said Simon. Brown water forms around Vaporeon and it washes over Ninjask, doing enough damage to knock him out.
"Ninjask is unable to battle. Vaporeon wins the match." said the official.
"Simon's Vaporeon has beaten Jonny's Ninjask. Now both trainers are down to two Pokemon each." said the official.
"Don't worry, Jonny!" said Nazz.
"You still got two Pokemon left!" said Kevin. Jonny returns Ninjask to his pokeball.
"You were great, Ninjask." said Jonny. He puts Ninjask's pokeball away and pulls out another one. "Go, Clawitzer!" He throws Clawitzer's pokeball and releases him.
"Jonny's next Pokemon is a Clawitzer." said the announcer.
"Vaporeon, Quick Attack!" said Simon. Vaporeon charges at Clawitzer and tackles him, knocking him back.
"Okay, Clawitzer, Dark Pulse!" said Jonny. Clawitzer holds out his large pincer towards Vaporeon and opens it; purple rings of energy are unleashed from it and they hit Vaporoen, damaging it.
"Vaporeon, Tackle!" said Simon. Vaporeon charges at Clawitzer and rams him, knocking him back.
"Aura Sphere!" said Jonny. Clawitzer fires a blue ball of energy out of his large pincer, and it hits Vaporeon, knocking it out.
"Vaporeon is unable to battle. Clawitzer wins the match." said the official.
"And Jonny's Clawitzer has beaten Simon's Vaporeon; now Simon only has one Pokemon left." said the announcer.
"Man; Clawitzer's Mega Launcher is awesome." said Kevin.
"That is true." said Rolf. Simon returns Vaporeon to its pokeball.
"You did well, Vaporeon." said Simon. He puts Vaporeon's pokeball away and pulls out a Net Ball. "Escavalier, go!" He throws the Net Ball and releases a Pokemon that looked like it was wearing a knight helmet, round metal ridges around its shoulders, a swirled gray shell on its underside, and gray and red striped protrusions on the end of its arms that resemble jousting lances hovering above the ground. Nazz points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Escavalier, the Cavalry Pokemon, and the evolved form of Karrablast. These Pokémon evolve by wearing the shell covering of a Shelmet. The steel armor protects their whole body." said the pokedex.
"And Simon's final Pokemon is an Escavalier." said the announcer.
"Clawitzer, Aqua Jet!" said Jonny. Clawitzer becomes surrounded by water and it flies at Escavalier, he rams Escavalier, knocking it back.
"Escavalier, X-Scissor!" said Simon. Escavalier's lance protusions glowed blue and it crosses them; it flies towards Clawitzer and rams its protusions into him, knocking him back. "My Escavalier has an Insect Plate just so you know."
"I'm guessing that powers up bug type attacks." said Nazz.
"Clawitzer, Crabhammer!" said Jonny. Clawitzer swings his large pincer at Escavalier and hits it, knocking it back. "And I'll have you know my Clawitzer's holding a Wave Incense."
"But will it be enough?" asked Simon. "Escavalier, use Bug Buzz!" Escavalier lets out a loud buzz, releasing red soundwaves that hit Clawitzer, knocking him to the ground and weakening his special defense; Clawitzer struggles to get up.
"You still want to battle, Clawitzer?" asked Jonny. Clawitzer nods in response. "Okay, if that's what you want. Use Muddy Water!" Brown water forms around Clawitzer and it washes over Escavalier, damaging him, and knocking it to the ground. As it gets up, it becomes surrounded by a light green arua.
"Looks like Escavalier's Swarm ability activated; so now his bug type moves are even stronger." said Simon. "Escavalier, use Fell Stinger!" Escavalier forms blue needles at the end of his lance protusions; he flies towards Clawitzer and strikes him with them, knocking him out.
"Clawitzer is unable to battle. Escavalier wins the match." said the official.
"Simon's Escavalier has beaten Jonny's Clawitzer, so now Jonny has only one Pokemon left." said the announcer. Escavalier suddenly begins surging with energy.
"Looks like Fell Stinger powered up my Escavalier's attack strength." said Simon. Jonny returns Clawitzer to his pokeball.
"You did great out there, Clawitzer." said Jonny. He puts Clawitzer's pokeball away and pulls out another one. "Go, Charizard!" Jonny throws Charizard's pokeball and releases him, surprising Simon.
"And Jonny's final Pokemon is a Charizard." said the announcer.
"Man, that Escavalier is toast; literally." said Kevin.
"Escavalier, Leer!" said Simon. Escavalier glares at Charizard while his eyes glowed red, weakening Charizard's defense.
"Charizard, Heat Wave!" said Jonny. Charizard releases a wind of flames from his mouth, and it hits Escavalier, dealing super effective damage, and knocking him to the ground; he struggles to get up.
"Escavalier, use Headbutt!" said Simon. Escavalier flies towards Charizard and rams his head against Charizard's, dealing damage, and making him flinch. "Now use Slash!" Escavalier swings one of his lance protrusions and slashes Charizard across his chest, damaging him.
"Charizard, Flare Blitz!" said Jonny. Charizard becomes surrounded by red orange fire and it charges at Escavalier.
"Escavalier, Giga Impact!" said Simon. Escavalier flies towards Charizard while surrounded by a purple energy sphere surrounded by orange streaks. Charizard and Escavalier fly towards each other until they crashed against each other, creating a powerful explosion that causes Jonny and Simon to shield their eyes with their arms. When the smoke from the explosion cleared, Charizard lands on his feet on the battlefield and flinches in pain from the recoil damage of Flare Blitz while Escavalier falls to the ground with swirly eyes.
"Escavalier is unable to battle. Charizard wins the match. The winner of this battle is Jonny." said the official.
"And it's over! Jonny's Charizard has defeated Simon's Escavalier and earning Jonny the victory!" said the announcer.
"You did it, Charizard!" cheered Jonny. Charizard lets out a loud roar in response.
"Way to go, Jonny!" cheered Nazz.
"That was awesome." said Kevin. At an upper level of the stadium, Tony was watching the duel. Back on the battlefield, Simon returns Escavalier to its Net Ball.
"You did your best, Escavalier." said Simon. He puts Escavalier's Net Ball away and he and Jonny who was followed by Charizard walk to each other. "That was a great battle."
"Thanks, Simon." said Jonny. They shook hands; after that, Simon gives Jonny pokedollars and they both exited the battlefield. Rolf stands up from his seat.
"Rolf's battle is near." said Rolf. "Rolf must prepare."
"Go for it, dude." said Nazz.
Ten minutes later on a field that was barren with a large plateau that had a waterfall going down it into a river that divided it; Rolf was facing a trainer named Jessica.
"Quagsire, use Slam!" shouts Jessica. Quagsire brings his tail down onto Gogoat's head, doing some damage.
"Gogoat, use Horn Leech!" said Rolf. Gogoat charges at headfirst with his horns sticking out as they glowed green and hits Quagsire, doing super effective damage, and knocks it out.
"Quagsire is unable to battle. Gogoat wins. The winner of this preliminary match is Rolf." said the official.
"And Rolf defeats Jessica to advance to the quarterfinals of the Kalos Conference." said the announcer.
"Rolf is victorious!" cheers Rolf.
"Way to go, man!" said Kevin.
"Right on!" cheered Jonny.
Later, on a field that was basically a barren wasteland, Kevin's Golurk was going against a Swalot that belonged to a trainer named Andrew.
"Golurk, use Earthquake!" said Kevin. Golurk pounds the ground, causing a massive tremor to go through the field and hits the Swalot and knocks it out.
"Swalot is unable to battle. Golurk is the winner. The winner of the match is Kevin." said the official.
"And now Kevin has made it to the quarterfinals!" said the announcer.
"Way to go, Kevin!" said Nazz.
"Kevin is the winner!" said Rolf.
Later on a forested field, Nazz's Florges was facing off against a Sableye belonging to a trainer named Damian.
"Florges, use Moonblast!" said Nazz. Florges forms a ball of pink energy between her hands and launches it at the Sableye, hitting it, doing super effective damage, and knocking it out.
"Sableye is unable to battle. Florges is the winner. The winner of the match is Nazz." said the official. A lot of boys in the crowd cheered loudly for her.
"Way to go, Florges!" said Nazz, making Florges do a curtsy.
"Nice one, Nazz!" said Kevin.
"Right on!" said Jonny.
"And now Nazz has moved on to the quarterfinals." said the announcer. Nazz returns her Florges to her pokeball and rejoins her friends.
"Congratulations, Nazz!" said Kevin.
"We're all going on to the quarterfinals!" said Jonny.
"Rolf is pleased." said Rolf.
Later on a forested field, Tony was facing a battered Hippowdon belonging to a trainer named Patrick. Tony pulls a pokeball out of his pocket.
"Amoonguss, go!" said Tony, throwing a pokeball and releasing a mushroom-like Pokemon. In the audience, Jonny points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Amoonguss, the Mushroom Pokemon, and the evolved form of Foongus. It lures prey close by dancing and waving its arm caps, which resemble Poké Balls, in a swaying motion." said the pokedex.
"Amoonguss, use Solar Beam!" said Tony. Amoonguss holds out its arms and the caps on the end of them begin to absorb sunlight.
"Quick, Hippowdon, use Double-Edge!" said Patrick. Hippowdon charges at Amoonguss and rams it, knocking it back; blue powder comes out of Amoonguss and onto Hippowdon. It suddenly collapses and falls asleep.
"Looks like my Amoonguss' Effect Spore has taken effect." said Tony.
"Wake up, Hippowdon!" shouts Patrick. Amoonguss fires a white beam of energy out of its arm cups, and it hits Hippowdon, dealing super effective damage, and knocking it out.
"Hippowdon is unable to battle. Amoonguss is the winner. The winner of this match is Tony." said the official.
"Tony's Amoonguss has defeated Patrick's Hippowdon and will be moving on the the quarterfinals." said the announcer.
Later at the town battlefield, Austin and his Heatmor were facing a trainer named Lucy who had a Butterfree out. Heatmor was twitching due to Butterfree using Stun Spore on it, leaving Heatmor paralyzed.
"Heatmor, Flamethrower!" said Austin. Heatmor fights through its paralysis and unleashes a stream of fire from its mouth; it hits Butterfree and deals enough damage to knock it out."
"Butterfree is unable to battle. Heatmor is the winner. The winner of this match is Austin." said the official.
"Austin's Heatmor has defeated Lucy's Butterfree and earning Austin a place in the quarterfinals." said the announcer.
Later at the rock and water field, Carter was facing a trainer named Anton who had a Durant out that was looking around. Carter's Sandslash bursts out of the ground below Durant and rams it, knocking it out.
"Durant is unable to battle. Sandslash wins the match. The winner of this match is Carter." said the official.
"Carter's Durant has beated Anton's Durant and now Carter has advanced to the quarterfinals." said the announcer. "Up next, Charlotte wil be battling Rita."
Later, on a wasteland field, Charlotte and Rita were facing each other.
"I've waited so long for this." said Charlotte.
"What? That defeat you gave me over a month ago wasn't good enough?" asked Rita.
"No number of defeats I give you will fill the emptyness you left inside me years ago." replied Charlotte.
"Oh, get over what happened with Teddiursa!" exclaimed Rita.
"I will never get over it." replied Charlotte. She and Rita each pull out a pokeball. "Go, Swoobat!" She tosses a pokeball and releases a blue, batlike Pokemon with black wings and a mane of light blue fur around its neck. Jonny takes out the pokedex and points it at the Pokemon.
"Swoobat, the Courting Pokemon, and the evolved form of Woobat. Anyone who comes into contact with the ultrasonic waves emitted by a courting male experiences a positive mood shift." said the pokedex.
"Rita's first Pokemon is a Swoobat." said the announcer.
"Weavile, go." said Charolotte, throwing a pokeball and releasing a bipedal, pale gray, cat and weasel like Pokemon with a red crown and collar made of feathers, a yellow gem on its forehead, and three claws on the end of each of his paws. Jonny points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Weavile, the Sharp Claw Pokemon and the evolved form of Sneasel. They live in cold regions, forming groups of four or five that hunt prey with impressive coordination." said the pokedex.
"And Charlotte's first Pokemon is a Weavile." said the announcer.
"Swoobat, use Air Cutter!" said Charlotte. Swoobat flaps its wings and releases light blue blades of energy at Weavile, hitting it, and damaging it.
"Weavile, Dark Pulse." said Charlotte. Weavile releases purple rings of energy from its gem, and they hit Swoobat, dealing super effective damage to it, and making it flinch. "Now use Icy Wind." Weavile blows wind with sparkling snow out of its mouth, and it hits Swoobat, dealing super effective damage and decreasing its speed.
"Swoobat, Air Slash!" said Rita. Swoobat crosses its wings together and spreads them, releasing circular blades of energy from them and they hit Weavile, dealing damage to it.
"Weavile, Night Slash." said Charlotte. Weavile's claws glowed purple, and it slashes Swoobat with them, knocking it out.
"Swoobat is unable to battle. Weavile wins the match." said the official.
"Charlotte's Weavile has defeated Rita's Swoobat. Can she turn this around?" asked the announcer.
"Of course I can!" exclaimed Rita as she returns Swoobat to its pokeball, then pulling out another one. "Go, Delcatty!" She throws the pokeball and releases a tan, catlike Pokemon with purple ears, a purple collar, and a purple tuft of fur at the end of its tail. Jonny points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Delcatty, the Prim Pokemon, and the evolved form of Skitty. It is highly popular among female Trainers for its sublime fur. It does not keep a nest." said the pokedex.
"And Rita brings out a Delcatty." said the announcer.
"Delcatty, use Sing!" said Rita. Delcatty begins to sing and musical notes appeared and the hit Weavile; it begins to get drowsy and collapses onto the ground and falls asleep. Charlotte only stood there and looked at Weavile. "Now use Double Slap." Delcatty runs at Weavile and slaps it repeatedly with its tail; Weavile remains asleep. "Now use Double Edge!" Delcatty charges at the sleeping Weavile and rams it, knocking it out; Delcatty flinches in pain from the recoil damage of Double Edge.
"Weavile is unable to battle. Delcatty wins the match." said the official.
"Now Charlotte is down to two Pokemon. What Pokemon will she bring out next?" asked the announcer. Charlotte returns Weavile to its pokeball; she puts it away and pulls out another one.
"Zebstrika, go." said Charlotte, throwing a pokeball and releasing a zebra-like Pokemon with jagged stripes. Jonny points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Zebstrika, the Thunderbolt Pokemon, and the evolved form of Blitzle. They have lightning-like movements. When Zebstrika run at full speed, the sound of thunder reverberates." said the pokedex.
"Charlotte's next Pokemon is a Zebstrika." said the announcer.
"Zebstrika, Discharge." said Charlotte. Bolts of electricty comes out of Zebstrika's body and they hit Delcatty, dealing damage to it. Delcatty begins twitching and static surrounds its body.
"Looks like Delcatty's paralyzed." said Kevin.
"Delcatty, use Sing!" said Rita. Unfortunatley, paralysis stops Delcatty from singing.
"Wild Charge." said Charlotte. Zebstrika becomes covered in electricity, and it charges at Delcatty and rams it, knocking it to the ground. Zebstrika receives recoil damage from Wild Charge. Delcatty struggles to get up.
"Double Slap!" said Rita. Delcatty fights through its paralysis and slaps Zebstrika across its face with its tail.
"Stomp." said Charlotte. Zebstirka rises up on its hind legs and stomps down on Delcatty with its front hooves, knocking it out.
"Delcatty is unable to battle. Zebstrika wins the match." said the official.
"Zebstrika has beaten Rita's Delcatty; now she's down to her last Pokemon." said the announcer. Rita growls and returns Delcatty to its pokeball, then pulls out another one.
"You will not beat me!" exclaimed Rita. "Nidoqueen, go!" She throws the pokeball and releases a blue, bipedal Pokemon with a small horn on its forehead. Jonny points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Nidoqueen, the Drill Pokemon, and the final evolved form of a female Nidoran. The body is covered by stiff, needlelike scales. If it becomes excited, the needles bristle outwards." said the pokedex.
"And Rita's final Pokemon is a Nidoqueen." said the announcer.
"Her Nidorina must've evolved." said Nazz.
"Zebstrika, use Stomp." said Charlotte. Zebstrika charges at Nidoqueen and stomps on her with its front hooves, damaging hit. It turned purple under Zebstrika's eyes.
"Looks like your Zebstrika fell for my Nidoqueen's Poison Point ability." said Rita.
"Whatever." replied Charlotte. Zebstrika loses stamina from its poisoning.
"Nidoqueen, Poison Fang!" said Rita. Nidoqueen charges at Zebstrika while its mouth glows purple and it bites Zebstrika, damaging it. "Just so you know, I found a Toxic Plate for my Nidoqueen; that makes her poison type moves stronger."
"Don't care." replied Charlotte. "Zebstrika, use Flame Charge." Zebstrika charges at Nidoqueen while its body was covered in fire and it rams into Nidoqueen, knocking her back. Zebstrika coughs from its poisoning and collaspes.
"Zebstrika is unable to battle. Nidoqueen wins the match." said the official.
"And the poison has taken its toll on Zebstrika, bringing Charlotte down to one Pokemon." said the announcer.
"Whatever." replied Charlotte, returning Zebstrika to its pokeball, then pulling out another one. "Gothitelle, go." She throws the pokeball and releases a black, humanoid Pokemon that looked like it was wearing a black dress with white bows, four, disklike protusions coming out of each side of its head, and a purple face. Jonny points the pokedex at the Pokemon.
"Gothitelle, the Astral Body Pokemon and the final form of Gothita. They can predict the future from the placement and movement of the stars. They can see Trainers' life spans." said the pokedex.
"Looks like Gothorita evolved also." said Nazz.
"Gothitelle, Psychic." said Charlotte. Gothitelle's eyes glowed blue and so did her body; Nidoqueen becomes surrounded by a blue light and she gets lifted up into the air and gets slammed onto the ground, receiving super effective damage.
"Nidoqueen, Shadow Claw!" said Charlotte. Nidoqueens arm becomes surrounded by a black aura; she charges at Gothitelle and slashes her, dealing super effective damage to it. "I'll take down your Gothitelle just like I did Teddiursa." Charlotte's eyes widen and she glares at Rita, scaring her.
"Poor choice of word." said Charlotte. "Gothitelle, Psyshock." Gothitelle lifts up her arms and forms a mass of purple, blue, and light blue energy between her hands; she launches it at Nidoqueen, hitting her, dealing super effective damage to her, and knocking her out.
"Nidoqueen is unable to battle. Gothitelle wins. The winner of this semifinal round is Charlotte." said the official.
"And it's over! After a hard fought battle, Charlotte's Gothitelle has defeated Rita's Nidoqueen and earning Charlotte the victory." said the announcer. Rita shakily returns Nidoqueen to her pokeball; she puts it away and looks at Charlotte who stared at her. Rita's eyes widened with fright, and she pulls out a pokeball; she tosses it, releasing a Teddiursa. Charlotte's eyes widen upon seeing Teddiursa; Rita drops Teddiursa's pokeball to the ground and stomps on it, smashing it to pieces.
"Here! You can have Teddiursa back!" exclaimed Rita. "She wasn't much of a battler anyway!" She tosses pokedollars at Charlotte and runs away. Charlotte and Teddiursa looked at each other.
"Teddiursa; it's me, Charlotte." said Charlotte. "Do you remember me?" Teddiursa smiles and nods in response. Tears formed in Charlotte's eyes, and she kneels down and spreads her arms. Teddiursa runs into Charlotte's arms, and they hugged while tears streamed down both their eyes. "Oh, Teddiursa, I missed you so much!" Nazz smiles with tears in her eyes as she watched. After breaking their hug, Charlotte reaches into her pocket and pulls out the orange ribbon and puts it around Teddiursa's ear. She then pulls out an empty pokeball.
"Do you still want to travel with me, Teddiursa?" asked Charlotte.
"Urs." replied Teddiursa, nodding. Smiling, Charlotte taps Teddiursa with the pokeball and it gets sucked into it; after it moved around a few times, it clicks.
"Reunited at last." said Charlotte. Teddiursa's pokeball vanishes due to Charlotte having four Pokemon on her team. "Don't worry, Teddiursa; as soon as this tournament's over, I'll get you back and we can travel together." She returns Gothitelle to her pokeball and she walks out of the battlefield.
Once the preliminaries were over, everyone waits to see who was facing whom in the quarterfinals. After a minute, the pairings were decided, and to Kevin and his friends' shock, they saw they were all going to be battling their respective rivals.
"Dude." said Nazz.
"This must be how the Eds felt when they learned they were going against thier rivals." said Jonny.
"Fate is a strange thing." said Rolf. Kevin looks to see Carter staring at him.
"Looks like I'll be taking you out of the tournament sooner than I thought, dweeb." said Carter.
"I was gonna say the same thing, dork." said Kevin.
