Beyond The Pale Chapter 16
Author's Note: I do not own The Hunger Games
Ursula Lavene, 18. Female Tribute of District 2 in the Fourth Hunger Games, July 22nd, A:D:D 4
Smirking as I chatted to Amethyst, I felt a feeling of joy. Oliver, my District Partner, is dead. Four left until I can go home. I admit, I couldn't stand Oliver whatsoever. He was from the lower-class. I was from the upper-class, the Peacekeeper Class. My older sister took part in the war, on the side of the Capitol. Amethyst was mourning her District Partner, who I learned was part of the same gambling ring her family was. Her dad was executed a year ago for placing bets on whether Elizabeth Plantagent, the District 1 girl from last year, will win the Games. The bet was made null and void when the boy who sabotaged the Communications system during the war killed her. Thankfully Hercules Roberts ended the boy's life, and I cheered when he stabbed Keanu Westwood in the gut. "One less rebel left" I crowed as Hercules killed his ally, the small girl from District 12. Maybe that's where Harold got his idea from.
Glancing at the walls of the City Arena, I looked for the spot where Gemma Turner froze to death in the Games two years ago. The spot where Danielle Andrews perished. The spot where Troilus Critchley was speared. There's the spot where Ariana Birdwell received a dart in the chest. The centre circle where Rocky Turner expired. Finally, near me, was the spot where Hercules bled to death. Seven Tributes from 2 gone. Back home the dead was placed in a Mausoleum, and outside their final resting place lies the Memorial Park, statues of the dead carved in marble by Consus Curl. The local paper boy, Therin Lee, who would cycle every day round town on his paper round. Marcus Lance, the angry twelve-year-old who is upset with the Plinths. The toddlers playing in the school playground, Peleus Evans' regular shouting matches with Petunia Curl, the Peacekeepers and their new recruits. That's District 2. My home. I hope to return back to 2 once I kill the remaining Tributes in here. I'm only in an alliance with Amethyst so the two of us can kill off the 10-11-12 trio. Once those three are dead, I will turn against Amethyst. Only one of us can go home. It won't be the boy from 10, Horsa Georges. It won't be the girl from 11, Flora Demaine, or the boy from 12, Harold Hennessey. It won't be my temporary ally, Amethyst Rickards of District 1. It will be me who will win the Fourth Hunger Games.
Looking for a knife I can use for my eventual backstabbing of Amethyst, and I mean that in the literal sense, I remembered who I killed. The girl from 7, whose name I've forgotten, but whoever her name was she is destined to be known as "Girl from 7" in the future. The girl from 4 and the little girl from 8. The boy from 4. The pair from 9. The girl from 10. Boy from 11 and my most recent kill, the boy from 7. I hope to add the boy from 12 to my "Kill List" before I get out of the Arena. "Ursula" I heard Amethyst mutter, her blue eyes wide. "H-here's a knife" She handed me one of her spare knives. "I know you want to win, and I won't get in your way if you decide to kill me at the very end. At least it's better than being executed by firing squad, which is what awaits me if I return home to District 1. My older brother moved out long before my parents started the "Jewel Mafia", a mafia group that struck terror into the hearts of the Districts. During the war the "Jewel Mafia" sided with the Capitol, hoping to get into Panem's Elite. But they were wrong. They kidnapped and murdered innocent civilians; amongst them was Varya Parlour. Edgar's younger sister. I beat the girl up with a baseball bat until she died before I dumped her body in a stream. Edgar found her body. In order to evade arrest, my parents had the entire Mafia disbanded and set up a Betting Ring. For me it was either die in the Games, or return home and executed." Amethyst explained her story, and I was left stunned by her confession. That she was part of a mafia that was notorious for their cruelty on civilians, and that to her, death was the far better option. I will fulfill her dream, I promise, I thought as the sun started to set in the Capitol.
We learn a bit about Amethyst, and why she wants to die. I Headcanon Marcus' surname as Lance, as a reference to his actor. One more outside POV chapter to go and then it's the final hours. I'm going to cut a scene from chapter 20 out as it reveals a spoiler character from a fan fiction somewhere down the line (Though that will be once I reach Chapter 68 of 75 Years). I'm all caught up now on cross-posting
