The Dark Among Us Episode 1 Jade Chapter 2
An Unexpected Roommate
It was a long walk but Mephiles made it to The Emeralds Luxory Apartment Complex of Fictiontown albeit at a late time. This was the place all the political members of the Fictiontown government and the wealthy members live.
As started as part of his position Mephiles was given an apartment here, abelite the smallest one available but least he had a place to live. Through Mephiles wished the plaque near the gate didn't advertise the Luxury Apartments bit as tensions between those in said apartments and those in situation like Bowser were bad enough as is
He goes in and walks along and looks at a sign on the grass reading 'Stay off the Grass' and sighs "Blaze can be a bit of a disciplinarian…" but then again, he knew her for a long time and trusts her completely even if her official position was secretary to the Mayor of Fictiontown or in current situation Deputy Mayor as Optimus is out of town.
Mephiles his way to the door but hears some rustling in the bushes. Someone was hiding as he saw someone quickly hide. He goes over and stands there and said "No walking on the grass, Blaze the Cat's orders."
"I'll be sure to send her an apology." A female voice said as they come on out. She was a white female with brown long hair wearing a blie and white dress.
"Belle…" Mephiles said simply, he can count the number of fictions who treat him nicely without any hate or suspicion on one hand and Belle as well as her husband Adam or the Beast as he was known by among them.
Belle comes off the grass and said "Hello Mephiles. I…wasn't expecting anyone. I know this looks a little off but there's an explanation. I swear."
Mephiles did find it odd she was out so late, but Belle always treated him with such kindness, I guess cause she is used to seeing people behind there fearsome exterior so he just asked "So…. where you off to?"
"Well…I went for a walk. I don't see what's wrong with that…" Belle said though her tone clear indicated that was far from the truth
"I didn't say there was" Mephiles points out to her.
"It's not a big deal. Just…. you know…out. For a walk. That's all" Belle said still trying to sound convincing She checks her watch "Dammit, I'm late" She then begins to head for the gate but stops and said looking back "Please Mephiles….promise me you won't tell Adam you saw me. He worries too much as it is and…It would just make my life a lot easier. Just please…. promise me."
Mephiles knows getting involved with whatever was happening between those two would be messy, but Belle helped him a lot getting his apartment set up so he just said "Sure"
"You promise?" Belle asked him
"I promise" Mephiles replied nodding
"Thank you Mephiles" Belle said smiling "I'll explain it all to you later, I will, but I have to go." She goes though the gate but stops and looks to him smiling and said "Thank you…for trusting me. Really, I appreciate it Mephiles."
With that Belle leaves and Mephiles is left to ponder what Belle has got herself into, he have to follow up with her about it at a later time as he heads into the building
He looks around the nicely designed lobby of the Emeralds. He sees Ralph the security guard asleep as his post, seems he does nothing else but that since Mephiles met him.
He first goes to his letter box as it's been a while since he had any mail. He opens to find it empty. "Seventh day in a row" He sighs closing it. He goes to Ralph "Hey Ralph…you awake?" He asked but he stayed asleep "I guess it's for the best…"
Mephiles looks to the golden suit of armour near by and sees it was very dusty "Geez, Ringmaster needs to dust this guy." Come to think of it, Mephiles hasn't seen Ringmaster, the former host of a fighting tournaments and the Emeralds maintenance/custodian guy for a while, very unlike him to slack off duties.
He then goes to the Emerald Directory and sees his name on his room was not there for Room 204 and sees it on the floor, unlike the others which was official plaque names his was a sticker "Darn thing fell off again." He said annoyed and picks it up and puts it back on "How much longer is this going to go on?" He asked sighing "You'd think the Sheriff would get a permeant listing"
Mephiles then calls the elevator and gets on when it arrived. He hits the button to his floor, just then someone came down the stairs and pass by and spots him. He was a white man with long red hair in a grey shirt and brown pants, this was Adam aka The Beast.
"Mephiles! Hey! Wait up" Adam said and stops the elevator doors from closing "Have you seen my wife? Have you seen Belle?"
Mephiles thought about it, he wanted to admit the truth but he gave Belle his word and just said "No, I haven't seen her since yesterday"
"Oh…Okay." Adam said dejected "Sorry to bother you. Dammit…. something's going on." He then leaves
As the lift doors close Mephiles was left to ponder that. Indeed, something wasn't right, ever since Optimus Prime left for his trip leaving Deputy Mayor Jonathan Crane aka Scarecrow in charge, it seems crime and poverty was rising. The only reason some sense of order remained was because of Blaze the Cat doing most of the work.
Eventually Mephiles reaches his floor, soon he'll be home and he can rest and recover from his brawl with Qrow. He enters his apartment and puts the landline off the the base so he get no calls.
He then sniffs and said "Dammit…should have cracked a window." He said as indeed, his apartment wasn't very clean, not like he gets many guests anyway.
He goes into his small kitchen, and he opens the window to let some fresh air in. He then turns on the tap and washes his face to clean it up a bit and fully heal it. Once he was done he sighs and said "What a night."
He then goes to the freezer of his fridge and finds it empty with an equally empty ice tray "Dammit" He then looks in his fridge which contained a sauce bottle and several boxes of Solaris Brand cigarettes "Why do I even own this? I should have gotten a smaller one"
Mephiles leaves the kitchen and goes to his desk with some files on it one labelled Ganondorf. Ganondorf was one of the rich people living in The Emeralds but he has quite the history, a tyrant who has cause much chaos and destruction in the old days. Despite this he managed to get into being one of the more influential members in running the Fictiontown government
"Ganondorf's file…" Mephiles said as he reads a bit of the file "I've never trusted this guy…" He sighs though he is one to talk, not a lot of people trust him. He looks at the table and sees a Chinese take out box "I don't remember ordering that….Probably a bad sign" He has a feeling someone else is here. He looks to his fan and said "At least, this still works and should help" He turns it on.
Mephiles looks to his chair and sees sleeping on it a white dinosaur like creature wearing a red cape and Mephiles sighs "Not again…" He knew who this was Hackmon
Hackmon is someone Mephiles knows well, long before his battle with Qrow he terrorized a Digimon village, the same one Hackmon lived in, in fact he destroyed his house. Through Hackmon aided the Royal Knights in chasing Mephiles off.
Since the exodus, Hackmon was one of many sent to live on the farm though the Digimon always sneaks out and comes here. Why to Mephiles, he is unsure, but Hackmon says it's cause Mephiles owes him for the house he destroyed though Mephiles things it's cause Hackmon wants to help keep him morally good.
"Hey…Hackmon…get up" Mephiles said but Hackmon stays asleep. He then goes and taps him a bit and that wakes the Digimon up
Hackmon is groggy and looks to see Mephiles "Hey Mephiles." He sees the hedgehog staring at him "I'm in your chair, right?"
Mephiles sighs he didn't have it in him for a blow out plus it was nice to have someone in this dreary place so said "I'm tired Hackmon. It's been a long day."
Hackmon nods understanding and gets off the chair and wonders to lie on the floor opposite the chair near the small TV. Mephiles sits in his chair and gets out a cigarette out and lights it
"Got a smoke?" the Digimon asked. Mephiles after lighting his goes and gives Hackmon one and lights it for him "Thanks. Couple thousand more of these, we'll be even on that house you owe me."
Mephiles seeing a whisky bottle he had on the table was empty he sighed annoyed and said heading to the kitchen "This has to stop. You can't keep sneaking off The Farm like this."
"The fresh air and sunshine pitch they sell you on is untrue." Hackmon said following him to the doorway to the kitchen as Mephiles pours himself a drink "I didn't escape out of the Homelands to end up in some prison, alright. Don't send me back there, Mephiles. You don't know what it's like, okay? Because of that ban on you, you've never been there."
Mephiles sips his drink and said to him "Calm down. I'm not going to send you back." Frankly so long as Hackman remains unseen and keeps his head down it should be fine plus if he doesn't talk too much, they can pretend he is a Pokemon pet or an exotic lizard.
Hackmon smiles at Mephiles happy to hear that, he eyes the glass and asked, "That for me?"
"Nope" Mephiles said walking past him to his desk
"The house didn't blow itself up, Mephiles. That's all I am saying. Do with that, what you will" Hackmon said a little annoyed at not being offered a drink "Now I ain't saying it's reason enough for me to have defiantly been offered a drink, but uh….it would have helped ease some of the pain you once caused me, yes. It also would have shown everyone how different you are now."
"If that was all you were saying , I'd might be able to get some rest" Mephiles simply told him
"I take it all back…. this is why everyone hates you." Hackmon told him flatly
Mephiles looks at him and asked concerned "Wait so…everyone hates me?"
Hackman shakes his head "Nah, I am just teasing"
"I am doing my best here" Mephiles told him
"That's clearly not true, what with the selfishness of the bourbon." Hackmon told him and as Mephiles goes to the main table to look at the paper he continues "But no, hate's the wrong word. They fear you more than anything. You did hurt and kill a lot of people back in your day. Especially when you were your complete Solaris form"
"I thought we were all supposed to have a fresh start here." Mephiles said "Besides the amulet containing Iblis was lost in the homelands and the only other way to access a version of my Solaris form is some kind of magical fire even though I've never done it because one time I lost sense of who I was. Besides I can't change the past."
Indeed, Mephiles true form the God of Time and Fire Solaris required him to be merged with his brother Ibis, unlike Mephiles Iblis was a berserk monster who was sealed away. Mephiles can harness different fires of magical kind that grants him a still powerful but lesser Solaris form that only has access to fire powers and not time. However magical fire is non-existent here unless in special charms and there aren't any, he knows of he can get. Not that he's complaining, this form terrifies him after the only time he's used it.
[Note: This is important as I will later come back to this to explain my own true Wolf form for Episode 5]
"Well, you can't change people's memories either." Hackmon points out then adds "Look, I'm not saying it's fair…but it's real. People are scared of you. I mean, look at your gloves"
Mephiles looks and notices scuff marks on his glove knuckles, as the gloves were a part of him they were bruises and they take a while to heal
"Who'd you get in a fight with? A Fiction right? I'm sure you're not going around punching Mundy's" Hackmon said looking at him.
"It wasn't my fault" Mephiles told him
"I get the feeling you say that a lot" Hackmon said unconvinced
Mephiles goes back to his chair and sits down on it while saying "You think my job is easy? You try keeping a bunch of Fictions from killing each other. How do you think this all works?"
"I don't know. How?" Hackmon said going back to his spot before and lies down
"By being big and being bad." Mephiles told him
"'By being big and being baaaad.' Don't say that stuff in front of people, it's embarrassing." Hackmon told him and added as Mephiles took a sip "That's the kind of attitude that gets you in trouble. In fact, I'll bet you were a jerk to everyone you came across tonight."
"Not everyone" Mephile said
"Alright, name one" Hackmon said unconvinced
A few came to mind the girl, Belle and Bowser. Mephiles thinks and then said "Bowser"
"King Bowser? Okay" Hackmon said nodding, he understood the koopa's situation but figured like himself Mephiles is not going to send him to the farm unless ordered he asked "How's his kids doing?" He was referring to Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings.
"He was yelling at them" Mephiles said flatly
"Yeah, sounds about right" Hackmon said nodding. He then said "Life is easier with friends, Mephiles, and we live a long, long time, maybe even forever in some cases. I know you like this whole lone warrior thing, you got going for yourself, but I've seen the way you look at Blaze, okay? You're not fooling me"
"Will you shut up?" Mephiles said wanting to end this, he wasn't in the mood to get relationship advice, but was embarrassed Hackmon was aware of his crush on Blaze.
"Well, maybe if my throat wasn't so parched, I wouldn't have to keep talking." Hackmon told him
Mephiles thinks about that and said "Wait, that doesn't make any se…."
"Just give me a drink. Please!" Hackmon begged
Mephiles sighs he figured this whole talk was just an attempt to get him to give the Digimon a drink "Hackmon. ENOUGH already. I haven't had any sleep for two days. I have just went out a second story window. I want to get in at lease two seconds of shut eye before I…" He sees the pleading eyes of Hackmon and sighs again looking at the drink "Look, if I give you this, will you let me sleep?"
"Yeah, yeah, alright….maybe" Hackmon said rolling his eyes, Mephiles shakes his head stands up and brings the glass to Hackmon and sets it down near him. The Digimon smiles and said "Thanks Mephiles." He proceeds to drink the bourbon using his tongue
Mephiles goes back to his chair and closes his eyes, time for some rest, he needed this it's been a long day.
Well time to rest after a long day but that is about the end
