The Dark Among Us Episode 1 Jade Chapter 4
The Mystery Girl's Identity
The next morning Mephiles was making his way to the Business Office to meet up with Blaze and also no doubt Crane. He sees there was a small line forming outside of three people one was a man a black armor with a red bat logo on his chest, a brown coat and wearing a red helmet with white eyes. He was known as Red Hood. The next was Cody.
The last one was a brown haired teenaged boy in a green hoodie, black jacket and black pants with red sneakers known as Makoto Naegi.
Luckily for Mephiles he didn't need to wait in line as he walks past them to the door. This didn't go to well with Red Hood as he said stepping out behind him "What are you blind?" This made Mephiles stop "What? You don't realize there's a line? I've been standing here for half an hour already." He approaches the hedgehog dark being "You get to just walk in? Must be nice being the sheriff…Do whatever the heck you want"
There was a lot he wanted to say but he didn't have time for this so Mephiles just says "Sorry, but I do work here."
"And what great work you do, Sheriff." Red Hood said sarcastically
"Hmmmm…now that didn't feel like it was genuine." Mephiles said thinking he then goes into the business officer
"Jerk…" Red Hood just said as the door closes
Mephiles through the large who it was impressive, it was filled with books and artifacts that was brought here from the homelands and kept safe. He can see at some desks Blaze talking with a brown hair in a smart business suit and glasses, this was Jonathan Crane aka Scarecrow another former villain who now is the Deputy Mayor of Fabletown also currently in charge with Optimus away.
"…and now you tell me there's a killer on the loose?" Crane said to Blaze annoyed, like they thought he isn't happy about this "…you two tittering behind my back." Blaze was trying to explain but he cut her off "because you are the one bringing this to me Miss Blaze. The one who so simply 'stumbled' upon this catastrophe on our very doorstep! The last thing I need with Mayor Optimus away is a hysteria. Do you understand me?"
"Yes. Of course, I do but…" Blaze tried to said
"Don't interrupt me, Miss Blaze!" Crane yells at her
"You asked ma question!" Blaze yelled back at him
"Don't change the subject!" Crane told her and then adds "You are to blame for this unpleasantness, Miss Blaze!"
"I brought you this news as soon as I could!" Blaze told him
"You are trusted to keep things running smoothly around here! This is a disaster!" Crane said sorting his glasses "Even worse then if the Joker was running amuck. Who else is to blame, if not you?"
Mephiles could no longer stay out of this and walks forward and said "If anyone is to blame, it's me. You don't need to be yelling at her." He didn't mind taking the blame, he was used to this sort of accusation anyway but Blaze was surprised he took the blame
"Oh, your role in this is duly noted! Yes, let's talk about that!" Crane said looking at Mephiles he then says as he heads to his desk and sits on his chair. "Sheriff, you are the one charged with protecting the citizens of Fictiontown. Your failure to do so cost someone their life, and the safety of the entire community! Tell me you've been doing something. Are there any leads? Suspects?" Blaze and Mephiles go to sit on some chairs in front of his desk "Anything? Anything at all? Any shred of evidence you two know what the hell you're doing. Because right now I have half a mind to fire the both of you."
Mephiles knows of two but even though he love for a nice role reversal he knows that Qrow doesn't have it in him to actually kill someone even while drunk, least he hopes. So, he says "Yeah. Her pimp."
"Her…was she a…?" Crane said taken aback by that response.
"Yeah. She was worried about a money situation." Mephiles said nodding
"Well, this is just wonderful. Not only is a Fiction killed, but it was a Fiction hooker to boot." Crane said more annoyed "You two need to get a handle on this situation quickly, and quietly. The last thing we need is all of Fictiontown knowing there's a killer amongst us. Blaze."
"Yes…. sir?" Blaze asked concerned
"Call Alice right this minute and let her know I'm coming in early for my massage." Crane instructed her
"I will." Blaze said nodding
Crane then looks around his desk and asked "Where is the bottle of wine you were to purchase?" Blaze looked surprised as she looks at the desk, she was sure she brought it "Oh, brother. Forget it. Can't do anything right." He said getting up from his desk and leaves the office but as he leaves, he said to Mephiles "Do your job Sheriff…. or we'll find someone who can."
Mephiles held his tongue, he wanted to tell him a lot and lay into the spineless doctor but figured best not to say anything and make it worse.
Blaze seeing the look on his face said after Crane fully left reassuringly "You would have just angered him more."
"Alright." Mephiles said sighing
"Well, that could've gone better." Blaze said sighing "Well…maybe we should have 'dragged it out'"
"For what it's worth…I still think it was better to tell him" Mephiles told her to reassure her they made the right choice. He then gets a pack of his smokes out.
"Yeah. Maybe…" Blaze said nodding she then notices Mephiles getting a cigarette out and said "Oh Crane doesn't like people smoking in…" The two exchange looks and she said "Nevermind. Smoke away" Mephiles lights it up
Mephiles thinks and then asks, "Wine to a massage?"
"Probably a gift." Blaze said and added as she swats the smoke fumes away "The weird part of that he's actually being nice to someone. I know I bought that damn bottle."
They then hear the sound of flapping wings and a voice asked "Is…is he gone?"
The source of the voice was an angel boy with brown hair white a Greek style outfit, he was Pit, formally a servant of the goddess Palutena but since arriving is now the Fabletown's official librarian and record keeper.
"Yes. Thankfully." Blaze said with a nod. Pit glides down to a nearby chair but the cat notices in his hands was a wine bottle in fact that looked like the one she…She storms up to him "Pit!"
Pit sets the bottle behind him and said sheepishly "Hello. Miss. Blaze"
"Drinking this early? I know you look like a boy and really older than that but seriously?" Blaze asked looking at him sternly "Where did you even get that?"
"It was by Mr. Jonathan's desk." Pit admits to her
"Then don't you think it probably belongs to him?" Blaze asked him, she knew it was the bottle she bought
"Maybe." Pit said smiling a bit. Blaze takes the bottle back and walks away. The angel boy looks to Mephiles smiling and asked, "How are you today, Mr. Mephiles?"
"I'm fine Pit, thanks for asking." Mephiles said to him, Pit was a nice guy who did his best to get along with people, but his personal interactions have only been work related.
"Pit…get the books." Blaze ordered Pit as she came back
"Which books?" Pit asked confused
"The ones with all the Fictions in it!" Blaze told him
"I'm positive that wasn't any more specific" Mephiles mentions as there were lots of books like that
"Bring the first three" Blaze then said
"Right, I'll be back in a few minutes" Pit said as he activates his amulet to grant himself the power of flight, a gift given to him by Palutena before he escaped the homelands and flies off.
"He knows the ones I'm talking about" Blaze told Mephiles "There's bound to be information on her here…. somewhere. We'll at least be to get her real name from the books whenever Pit finds them. In the meantime, poke around. Maybe the mirror can help" She goes over to Crane's desk and picks up the phone "I really have to get this appointment squared away, but…let me know if you need anything."
With that Mephiles was free to do what he wanted until Pit came back with the lamp, he looks around the room, he sees Magic Lamp that used to belong to Aladdin's genie and said "Magic Lamps are pretty much just lamps after the genie's free…" he figured there was no one in the lamp but rubs it and nothing happens "Worth a try."
He then looks over at the desk and goes to it and sees on it were three face down cards and said "Tarot cards, Blitzo brought them back from Appalachia…who knows where they were before then…or what that imp did to get them."
He decides to flip them, he flips the first one and looks at it it was of a cat girl hugging a shadow "Strength…I guess it comes in all forms." He puts it down and flips the second it shows a woman dead having fallen from a tower as a man looks shocked from above it was labelled the Tower. He shakes his head and discards it
He flips the last one it showed a man dead with ten swords in his back, labelled Ten of Swords. "Damn…Just what the Mobius is this supposed to mean?" He takes it with him just in case he can find out a connection.
With nothing else he goes over to the Magic Mirror, talking to this thing was always a pain. He said to it "Hey, Magic Mirror…I got a question."
The Mirror turns black, and a white face appears smiling and said "Now you know what my rule is."
"Please…I don't have time for this" Mephiles groans
"Your impatience is callow, you're needlessly cruel, but have a little respect for our historic rules." The Mirror told him
"Mirror, Mirror, to avoid more…. friction…tell me all about this Fiction" Mephiles said, coming up with rhymes that work was hard.
"See? Now wasn't that so hard?" The Mirror asked smiling
"Yeah, don't try me or in the next two seconds I'm kicking a hole in you." Mephiles told him annoyed
"There was no need for that…. fine." The Mirror said shaking his head "Of which Fiction do you wish to know?"
There were a few names that came to Mephiles' head but one he wanted to see to test the mirror out "Show me Qrow Branwen." The mirror's face fades and in it shows an image of a street with Qrow drunkenly stumbling down it "Where is he?"
"What you see is complete. Qrow Branwen stumbles down a street" The Mirror said as the vision fades and his face appears smiling
"No kidding, but which street?" Mephiles asked annoyed
"I'm sorry Mephiles, I can only show you what can be seen these days." The Mirror said having lost a lot of his capabilities since the exodus.
Deciding to drop it Mephiles then asks "Show me Blaze the Cat"
The Mirror does so, showing Blaze who was speaking on the phone not to far from him. He then said reappearing "Not much of a request….She's in this very room."
"Fine, show me Pit." Mephiles said time to see how the angel's search was doing, what he saw was Pit drinking from the wine bottle "Hey! Put down the bottle and get to work!" Mephiles called out
"Still looking!" Pit called out as he puts the bottle down
Mephiles then sighs and said "I don't know her name. Not yet exactly."
"Well…until you do, I can't help you." The Mirror told him.
"Well then nobody right now" Mephiles said
"Very well. Please return should you wish to ask about someone else….or someone new" The Magic Mirror said and fades to rest
Just then as Blaze was finishing her call Pit returns flying in carrying three books but they were heavy, and his flight power was running out so he ended up falling and dropping them onto the ground
"Well, I'm sure we'll get it all cleared up. Okay. Thank you." Blaze said ending the call she goes and helps Pit set up the books and the two begin researching to find the mystery fiction's identity
Before going to join them, Mephiles shows the Mirror the tarot card and asked "Hey, do you know what this means?"
"Tarot is a backwards art. I wouldn't put too much stock in its wisdom, Mephiles." The Magic Mirror told him
"No, not when you've been so helpful" Mephiles said sarcastically.
"Previsions muddy. I'm a clear as a window" The Mirror told him smiling before fading.
With that done Mephiles goes over to join the two at the table and approaches the bigger book open on a page depicting multiple Fictions on it
"We'll start with these" Blaze said approaching "Any information on Fictions in our community will be somewhere in these books"
Mephiles nods and looks at the book there were several faces he recognized he looks over at the corner where he sees Bowser about to unleash a first ball and said "Nice attack stance" The person he was fighting was a plumber in red with an M marked hat, this was the famous Mario. He said, "I haven't seen Mario around for a while."
"Peach says he is keeping private. Apparently, he is sad his brother didn't make out of the Homelands." Blaze explained
"Kind of wish Bowser would keep private as well" Mephiles states He then looks above them to see Jonathan Crane dressed as the Scarecrow being punched by Batman in the face "Jonathan Crane…. getting his smug face beaten." He said with a smirking look
"What was that?" Blaze asked
"Your boss. In one of his finest moments." Mephiles said then thinks "It is hard to understand how he ended up running this place."
The two mobions look at each other and Blaze said "Well, maybe it's time that changed"
Mephiles returns to the looking at the book and sees in the background Hackmon and several knight like beings "Hackmon, and the Royal Digimon Knights." He then looks and sees in the Centre Adam and Belle in the moment when Adam regained his human form "Beauty and the Beast"
He then looks to the corner and sees himself with Qrow and a gril in a red hood wielding a scythe and Mephiles thinks looking at the girl "I think her name was…Ruby…Ruby Rose. She didn't make it out."
He then looks to Qrow who was wielding Harbinger and said with a bit of annoyance "Ruby's drunken uncle with bad luck"
"Qrow?" Blaze asked
"Yep, and his weapon Harbinger." Mephiles said nodding. He looks at him which was in his Dark Solaris form, the only time he took that form "and there's me…Not a good day, not just cause I ended up in a volcano thorough.
He looks below and sees Blaze there surrounded by robots who were intent on fighting her. Blaze seeing it said "I am pretty sure that is meant to be me."
Mephiles looks at the robots and said "Robots. The less said about that, the better." He then looks over at the lat one, which featured what looked to be an Aztec like warrior fighting a woman in pink and short black hair but by his side was a roman with a green hood and wielding a staff. He sees a symbol on the pink cladded warrior "…I've seen this before. This symbol on the woman's clothes, it's the same as the ring's"
"Could be her sister, or cousin she looks to be similar age to her after all" Blaze said thinking and indicates to another book "This has most of the emblems of the old days and usually what family they come from. If it's in here, we'll have her name."
Mephiles nods and goes to the Book of Symbols and opens it but looking at one he couldn't tell and said, "Oh great."
"What?" Pit asked looking up
"I can't read any of this" Mephiles admits
"Oh, I can help" Pit said going over
"Yeah. Thanks" Mephiles said nodding
"No need, we look out for each other" Pit said with a smile
"Don't overdo it Pit" Mephiles told him, he points to the of a demonic dinosaur's face and said "Pit, translate"
"Hmmm. An exquisite design…from the…royal banners of Koopa Keep." Pit said reading it
"Bowser?" Mephiles asked folding his arms
"He most likely wrote this in himself" Pit states shrugging
He turns back a page and sees a weapon resembling Harbinger and a gear symbol "This looks familiar" Mephiles said thinking
"Yes. From the weapon of Qrow. A Magical Blacksmith's blessing, actually" Pit explained
"Someone blessed that thing?" Mephiles asked surprised
"I only translate" Pit told him
Mephiles goes back and looks at a goat and asked, "What does this say?"
"It says, Bricklebit in olden Elvish hand." Pit said reading it
"What's Bricklebit?" Mephiles asked confused
"It's a magic world" Pit said
"What does it do?" Mephiles asked
"Makes animals poop out gold" Pit told him bluntly
After an awkward exchange they go back to the book and he turns the page and sees a fire emblem and Mephiles asks "What's that?"
"It reads…. 'Mark of the Kingdom of…the Fire Nation.'" Pit translates
"Not who I am looking for" Mephiles said and turns the pages and finds a ring with the skull emblem and said "This is the one. Where is this symbol from? Which family or story?"
"Oh, that is an odd one." Pit said reading "Kingdom's name Outworld. I'll go look it up" He goes to do that
"Outworld? That's one of the realms that resided in the kingdoms of Mortal Kombat" Blaze said recognizing it
"Indeed and I think I found which of that area is our victim." Pit said looking at a profile book "Jade."
"Yes! What does it say?" Blaze asked approaching
"Hmmmm, Jade was a girl who was the loyal bodyguard and friend to the Princess of Edenia Kitanna, when Shao Kahn took over the realm, she maintained her sole duties." Pit read "However Jade soon fell in love with one of Shao Kahn's top generals, who together with many warriors overthrew Shao Kahn and her now husband took control of a potion of it with Jade by his side."
"What about the girl in pink?" Blaze asked
"That would be Mileena, a clone Shao Kahn made of Kitanna who swore to avenge her father and has been plaguing them both for years in the story." Pit explained sighing "However Jade always remained the part that keeps her hustmand from falling into being a dictator and a shining jewel of his heart. So despite the turmoil…they lived Happily Ever After." This shocked and saddened the three of them "Should I…. mark it, Miss Blaze?"
"Yes, please" Blaze said sighing. Pit nods and grabs a stamp and stamps the word 'Deceased' on Jade's bio in the book. "And what's her husband's name?"
"Ko'atal…. Commonly called Kotal Kahn." Pit reads
"We got what we came for." Blaze said arms folded
"Yeah." Mephiles said walking away a bit
"Her name is Jade, she was married to Kotal Kahn. I mean that's more that we…" Blaze explained
"Her name was Jade." Mephiles corrected her
"Yeah." Blaze said nodding
Mephiles rubs his face and said "We should talk to the husband"
"You think he did it?" Blaze asked her
"No, I don't think he did it, but we do have to let him know about his wife." Mephiles told her and as she goes back to reaseaching. He goes back to the Magic Mirror and said "Mirror, mirror, blah, blah iction….blah, blah, blah about this Fiction."
"Of which Fiction do you want to know?" The Mirror asked waking up
"He's a Kahn I think, show me Kotal Kahn." Mephiles asked the image he saw was surprising, it showed Kotal, in a dang dark home, sitting on an armchair, but in full view was a blody knife on the floor "…what's he been doing? Where is this?"
"Where's what?" Blaze asked looking up
"Do you know where Kotal Kahn lives?" Mephiles asked her
"Well Kahn is a ruler of sorts, so if he's one of them….most likely South Bronx. Green building with blue window shutters?" Blaze said thinking and approaching
"Blue frames?" Mephiles asked looking at the image in the mirror as see thoses in it
"Yep, that's the one…I can take us there." Blaze said smiling
Mephiles thinks and then asked "Show me Maleena, the cloned daughter of Shao Kahn" The image shows an image of a skeleton in an old kingdom, clearly dead "Well, that crosses her off the suspect list.." He then sighs and said "Show em….Show me Jade." He figured this would help locate the rest of the body
"Through powerful magic her whereabouts concealed. Unfortunately for you, 'These lips are sealed'" The Magic Mirror said almost like in a trance
"What?" Mephiles said shocked those last words were just like what Jade said to him last night
"These lips are sealed." The Mirror repeats "It's not my choice of phrasing Mephiles. It's simply the way this has to be."
"Nobody right now then" Mephiles said
"Anything we can use?" Blaze asked approaching
"Yeah. That will have to do for now." Mephiles said nodding
"Come on, we're going over there." Blaze said and the two walk away as the Mirror goes back to rest. But just then the phone rings "Sorry I have to get that." She goes and answers the phone "Hello? Emeralds Business Off…Yes, I-He is. Hold on." She looks to Mephiles and hands the phone over saying "Mephiles…it's for you."
Mephiles takes it and hears Bowser on the other end say "Mephiles! It's me. Bowser." From the background noise it sounded like a commontion. "You there?"
"Listen, Bowser again, I'm sorry about the car." Mephiles told him
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's okay." Bowser told him "Mephiles! Dammit, listen, okay? There's someone upstairs, going through all of Qrow's things. Get over here, Mephiles! Before he…wait, hang on.." There was a loud bashing noise heard on wood "Oy! Dammit. Hey!" and the phone goes dead
"What was that about?" Blaze asked him
"Hard to say." Mephiles said putting the phone down "Something's going on at Bowser's place."
"What about Jade's husband?" Blaze asked him
"I don't know…I couldn't really tell, but…he could be in trouble." Mephiles said thinking "And we should go there anyway to search her apartment. Bowser might have to wait."
The two approach the door and Blaze said, "Whenever you're ready."
Mephiles nods and opens the door of the business office and lets her go first. The purple cat smiled at that and the two leave the office
As they exit the building Blaze curious asked "Did Bowser say who was there? Was it Qrow?"
"I don't know, it's possible" Mephiles said thinking "Whoever it was, it didn't seem like Bowser was happy to see them."
"Well, maybe Kotal Kahn can wait." Blaze said considering Bowser might be in danger
"You didn't see him…he…could use some help too." Mephiles said recalling how Kotal was unmoving from the chair and the bloody knife.
"Well…where to first?" Blaze asked as they stop at the front gate.
Mephiles push opens the gate and think the choices were Bowser's Apartment or Kotal's Apartment. Bowser seemed to be in immediate danger but Kotal looked to be in more life threatening danger. He made his choice as the two walked
"Kotal's place, we need to tell him about his wife." Mephiles said to her "He deserves to know."
"You're right." Blaze said nodding "And…. Bowser's a tough Koopa. He can probably handle himself for a few hours."
"He'll have to." Mephiles said
And with that the two head down the street to Kotal Kahn's apartment.
Well time to see what Kotal is doing while also wondering what is up at Bowser's place.
