The Dark Among Us Episode 1 Jade Chapter 5

We join Mephiles and Blaze as they arrive at Kotal Kahn's apartment in the South Bronx area of the city. They were just outside the building.
"I don't want to stay here any longer then we have to, so let's just decide on an apporch and stick to it, alright?" Blaze said to Mephiles. "Just humour me.
Mephiles thought and decided to admit what he saw "When the Magic Mirror showed me the apartment…I think I saw a knife inside, covered in what I believe to be blood."
"I'll admit, I wasn't expecting that." Blaze said surprised.
"Yeah." Mephiles said nodding.
"However, like I said, let's not overcomplicate things." Blaze told him "You can question him while I look around for it."
"And if he objects?" Mephiles asked.
"We're here on official Fictiontown business. And we can be persuasive if necessary." Blaze said but adds smiling "Or…. you can."
With that settled the two go to the front door. Mephiles knocks on the door but there was no answer so he tries again calling out "Hey! Open up! It's Mephiles. I need to talk to you."
There was still no answer. Mephiles tries to open the door but it was locked. He then calls out "Kotal! You in there?" Still there was no answer
Giving up on the door, Mephiles and Blaze move away and around to the window to the apartment which was partly open. Mephiles peers through the window and sees just past the draps someone was sitting on the chair, in front of the TV not moving.
"Hey!" Mephiles called out to the inside "Hey! Excuse me. Sir?" There was no reaction or response from the person "Are you Kotal? It's about your wife, Jade." There was still no response.
Deciding that there was means to enter he looks and lets a Mundie police car pass by. "Alright, we'll try this out." Mephiles said opening the window and begins climbing into the apartment
"Well, I guess we are out of options." Blaze admits with a nod. Once Mephiles was in she looks around then holds her arm out "Come on, help me up."
Mephiles helps Blaze into the room and they found it dark inside and messy and Blaze had to hold her nose as there was a smell. They look to the person and they see it is a man with brown skin with blue colour tattoos, wearing modern day shirt and jeans
(Note: Kotal Khan's blue/green skin is mostly paint as the flashback in MKX he had more common flesh colour skin)
It was no doubt, he may looked different but it was him, Kotal Khan and he was seemingly dead with a gun shot wound in his chest and also a slit wrist
"Oh mobius…. we're too late." Blaze said in shock "That makes two fictions dead….we need to figure out what is damn well going on here…" She looks sadly at Kotal who's eyes were still open "Who would do this to them?"
"I don't know, Blaze." Mephiles admits to her. Blaze goes over to the door and looks at the mail that was left on the floor when it was posted.
Mephiles looks around and goes over to the wall and sees a bullet embedded in the wall, he said to himself "Bullet passed through the chair." He then grabs the bullet and pulls it out the wall to collect as evidence.
He then noticed on the wall nearby a picture which showed Kotal and Jade smiling as they were somewhere near a part or countryside. Bother were wearing modern day Mundie clothing, so it was obviously after the Exodus."
"When do you think that was taken?" Blaze asked seeing the picture as well and that Mephiles was also looking at it.
"Happier times, before all of this." Mephiles said with a shrug. He then looks at the floor and sees some blood but it was a splat sides of it were hard edged "Strange. Hard edge to this pool. Like something was here but got moved." He then looks at the nearby wooden doors to this pool of blood. First though he kneels down and feels the blood. "Still a little sticky."
Mephiles then notices the knife he saw in the mirror and looks at it "It's sharp….and there's blood on the blade."
"Is that the same knife you saw in the mirror?" Blaze asked him.
"It is." Mephiles said nodding and looks at the distance between it and Kotal's body "I don't know why it's over here."
"I just don't understand…Why would someone want to kill him?" Blaze asked a bit upset and leaves to keep looking, however she comes back when Mephiles decides to inspect Kotal's body
"That left a mark." Mephiles said as he examines the gunshot wound. "Ruined his shirt." He then looks at the wrist "Ouch." He then places his hand on it to check the blood "Dry" he told Blaze. He then looks at Kotal's face "They never really do look peaceful, do they?"
"I wouldn't know" Blaze said unsure. She then looks at the side table where some orange bottles lay and asked, "What are they?"
"They seem to be prescription sleeping pills." Mephiles said examining them. He then sniffs a bit smelling something and looks to the gun on the floor.
"Huh? What's up?" Blaze asked
"This gun wasn't fired recently. I'm guessing a week ago or more…" Mephiles states and then picks it up via the barrel.
"Fingerprints?" Blaze deduces.
"They'll be on the grip and the trigger." He said putting it into his bag. He then sees a shell casing and picks it up and examines it "This matches the caliber of the gun on the floor." He places it away.
He then stands up and goes to the nearby bookshelf and examines it and moves a finger over the books gathering dust "Dusty. No one's read these in a while." He notes to himself "And these a second-hand paperbacks. Old encyclopedias."
Mephiles then goes to the small kitchen and spots a not on the fridge which red 'K, Pay the rent next week. Pizza in the fridge. Please don't look for me. Goodbye, J' He knew this was not doubt written by Jade.
Mephiles then goes to the two wodden doors and upon closer look sees it was leading down and could spot what seemed to be a bed, indicating this was a fold up bed. He pulls it down and sees the missing part of the blood pool as well as a letter on the bed "Son of a…" Mephiles said in surprise
"What is that?" Blaze asked pointing to the letter
Mephiles goes to pick it up but it was a bit of a struggle "It's stuck to the bed a little" He manages to get it unstuck and reads it "My dearest Jade, I never meant to hurt you, and I cannot endure knowing that I have. This was for the best. I'll see you again. Love, your devoted Kotal" This note made the two realize with all the stuff like the gun, knife and pills this wasn't a murder scene, but the scene of a suicide.
Blaze goes to look at Kotal and said saddened "I should know his face. There are so few of us…I should know his face." Just then she was surprised when Kotal suddenly blinked. Kotal then springs back up to life and coughs as Blaze gasps and backs up and said "Oh my Chaos. Mephiles he's alive."
Kotal falls out of the chair onto the floor and struggles to stand as he asked weakly "What-what are you two doing here?"
"Let's get you back up" Mephiles said as he helps Kotal up and back into the chair.
"Aagh." Kotal groans in pain as he tries to get comfortable but was hard since his body was still recovering and he asked again "Answer me, what are you doing here? What's going on?"
"We found you here, in your chair, with what we thought was a fatal injury." Blaze told him and then added "We should call Granny, have her take a look at you."
"Hold on a sec with that, Blaze." Mephiles said to her and then looks at Kotal "Do you know who I am?"
"Of course." Kotal said nodding.
"That's good. I have a few questions" Mephiles said also nodding.
"Why? Wh-what's this about?" Kotal asked confused about this.
Mephiles decided to get the big one out the way and said "We found your note…"
Kotal looked down and said "I made a decision…for us….it felt like the only way out…so…" He places a hand on his chest "I…shot myself…in the heart…through I'd be dead by now…hurts so much I yearn for a Mortal Kombat faitality."
Mephiles checks the chest wound and notes "Your heart's actually a bit more to the centre, I believe you probably hit a lung instead."
"Oh, that's great." Kotal said sarcastically then thinking said "At least….that's how I think it happened…my mind is a little fuzzy right now….I thought it was all a bad dream."
Blaze in shock asked, "Why did you do it, Kotal?"
"I did it because I was ashamed." Kotal admits looking saddened "I…couldn't live with myself knowing I had done that to my beloved. I did what I could to keep her away. But she still worries about me. She comes by, makes sure I'm okay. I'm no longer the strong general she fell in love with, I'm just a burden to her now and useless….I don't want her to have to worry about me anymore."
"She's better off without me…. without me to drag her down." Kotal adds looking down tears forming "She deserves that. She's been through a lot. I just wish I could've done better by her…She's always been there for me" He then cries more saying "Go away. Just leave me now."
Looking him Mephiles couldn't bring himself to tell Kotal the full truth so he says "Your wife is missing."
"What? Oh no." Kotal said looking shocked and he gets worried as he drew his own conclusion on what happened "No….no, no, no, no…I knew this would happen…that accursed Aran."
"Kotal, I uh…" Mephiles began to say but then they hear knocking on the door.
"Do you…" Blaze said looking at Mephiles who shakes his head.
"Are you expecting anyone?" Mephiles asked Kotal who shakes his head. He goes to the door "I'll see who it is."
"No. Wait." Blaze said stopping him. They then notice the person at the door messing with the handle to try and open the door. She says to Kotal "We need to know why whoever's out there is breaking in. I need your help."
"What would you have me do?" Kotal asked.
"Just play dead." Blaze told him simply.
"What?" Kotal asked shocked
"Trust me." Blaze said and explained "You can't move in your condition anyway, so just stay still. The second we figure out what they're here for, Mephiles will arrest them." The sound of the wood creaking it heard "Think about your wife."
"Give me back that gun. Just in case." Kotal said as his condition.
Mephiles obligies and gives Kotal the gun back. He then opens the closet and he and Blaze enter it to hide, the purple cat motions Kotal to remain quiet as they close the closet. There was a gap big enough so Mephiles can see out of it to know what is happening
The door is forced open and Mephiles sees a figure enter. It was a tall bald-headed man wearing orange and black robes who begins to search around the apartment. He wasn't sure who the guy was.
However as soon as he came to the closet and moved Mephiles sees Kotal pull the gun out and aim it at the intruder "What did you do with me Jade?!"
"Huh?" The figure said looking shocked at the man he thought was dead
Mephiles chose this moment to jump out of the closet to stop this situation from getting grim. The man seeing Mephiles rushes out of the building.
"Hey!" Mephiles said and gives chase. Blaze thinking but then following.
Mephiles chases the man down an alley and calls out "Hey! Stop!"
"Leave me alone!" The man said as he ran into a building and slams the door.
Mephiles gets the door open and follows him up the stairs narrowing avoiding a table that was pushed down them. The man after going up another set of stairs threw a vase and another side table at Mephiles who dodges them all.
The man then forces his way past Cody who is knocked unconscious by a couch he was moving. The couch blocked Mephiles' way who lifts it up to move it and runs to the end of the hall with two doors the man went through room 3B with the 3 dangling and room 3C which was partially open.
Mephiles rushes into room 3C and hears some footsteps and notes the fallen shelf, the window, a fallen chair and another door leading into another part of the room. He then sees the man run by the window realizing he picked wrong. That was close he almost gave Mephiles the slip
Mephiles opens the window and sees the man leap from the woode walkway to a metal one but bangs onto it and breaks it a bit and held on. Mephiles leaps over. And grabs the end but it breaks off and he falls to the walkway below.
Mephiles recovers and enters the building. He then hears a commotion above him and feet running which causes dust to fall from the ceiling, that was no doubt the suspect running. Mephiles runs to a window and avoids a door opening and sees from the window ahead the figure pass down so he leaps out the window.
Mephiles lands in the dumpster which the suspect also landed in so he landed ontop of him, the figure recovers and gets out the dumpster
"Hey!" Mephiles called out, the man tried to flee but Mephiles jumps on him and knocks him down. He gets up and pants that was a workout.
The man rolls onto his back and said "Ease up Mephiles…We're on the same side here."
"You….son of a hellspawn….make me….run after you…" Mephiles said between breaths and after recovering and pacing asked "Why were you looking through books, huh?"
"The same stuff you should be doing." The man told him "Investigating. Looking for clues. Why the heck were you hiding in closets? Exodia dammit" Mephiles then kicks him in the leg "What the heck?!"
"I'm asking the questions here." Mephiles told him.
The man moves back till his back in the wall of a garage door, and he stands back up. Despite the fact he was taller then Mephiles, the shadowy demon still intimidated him.
"You're looking fro Qrow Branwen, right?" The man asked "My employer is looking to ask him a few questions, as well."
"Oh yeah, and exactly who is your 'employer'?" Mephiles asked doubtful.
"I can't tell you that. It's confidential. Sorry, I am sure you understand." The man in orange told him.
"Nope, can't say I can understand." Mephiles said shaking his head "Come on. You're coming with me."
"This could have been easy." The man said not at all worried.
"Oh, don't worry. It still is." Mephiles told him. "Come on."
"Dox." The man said with a grin.
"Dox. What the heck is that? Your name or something?" Mephiles said confused.
"Oh no, I'm Para…" The man now known as Para said and points behind Mephiles "He's Dox."
Mephiles looks behind him and sees a man that was similar to Para but wearing green rather then orange who then punches Mephiles on the back of the head knocking him out.
"You almost look peaceful." A familiar voice said as Mephiles regained consciousness and sees Blaze kneeled down looking over him. She was the one who said it
"Yup." Mephiles said as he places his hand on his head and groans he head hurt, but oddly so did his chest and sides
"Except for the fact you're lying in a dirty alley" Blaze points out looking around.
"Yep." Mephiles said in agreement.
"With what appears to be an open wound on the back of your head." Blaze added in her observations.
"Yeah." Mephiles groaned with a sigh "Mind telling me what happened?"
"Well, the one guy hit you, then the other one began to kick you while you were down." Blaze explained.
"Well…that explains the ribs now." Mephiles notes.
"After that, they jumped into a car and left." Blaze said finishing her explanation. "Come on, get up." Mephiles groans and slowly gets up off the floor. "We should probably check in on Bowser. See if there is anything there that might get us back on the trail."
Mephiles nods and after recovering the both of them head off. Mephiles thought to himself about those two guys Para and Dox, just what is there connection to the victim and who is this mysterious client of theirs and another thing about what Kotel said.
Who was this Aran? Could he have been Jade's pimp?
Mephiles had a run in with the Paradox Brothers but who is there mystery employer and who is this Aran Kotel mentioned, find out some point
