Akari wandered along the outskirts of Eterna City, the previous day's events replaying in her mind. The frantic pursuit to recover the Adamant Orb, and Officer Jenny's debriefing – it was all still fresh. But amidst the whirlwind, a detail snagged at her attention. Nando's beautiful poem, a creation myth of Sinnoh, had conspicuously omitted any mention of Giratina, the Renegade Pokémon said to reside in the Distortion World. The omission felt like a deliberate silence, a missing piece to the puzzle.
Despite her contemplative mood, Akari was determined to get some training in while she had the time. Roselia was her top priority. Since evolving, Roselia had gained access to a vast arsenal of new moves. However, Akari recognized the importance of mastering a few moves before expanding Roselia's repertoire. She also noticed Roselia's movements weren't flawless. Akari sensed a hidden potential for agility that Roselia hadn't quite tapped into yet. Unfazed by this challenge, Akari decided to train her Pokémon after taking a break from her walk out of Eterna City.
Once she found a clearing, Akari threw out her Luxury Ball to release Roselia. Once Akari explained what she planned to train Roselia on, he gave an eager nod as he placed a rose in his mouth. Starting off simple, she had Roselia run as fast as possible for as long as he can to test his endurance and speed. While Roselia couldn't keep up to Monferno or Magikarp in terms of speed, he still improved after evolving from a Budew. Afterwards, Akari had Roselia try various forms of acrobatics while using different moves to make sure his accuracy is top notch while in a high speed situation.
Shortly after their training session to continue on to her next destination, the ground beneath her feet shuddered violently as she passed by a construction site. Startled, Akari looked around to see construction workers in hard hats scrambling for cover, a sense of panic etched on their faces. Without hesitation, she sprinted towards a burly man with a thick moustache who seemed to be in charge.
"What's happening?" she gasped, her voice barely audible over the tremors.
The man whipped around, his eyes wide in surprise. "There's a wild Pokémon on the rampage in Wayward Cave," he explained, his voice gruff but laced with urgency. "It showed up a few days ago, tearing through the caverns. No one can get a clear look at it, but one thing's for sure – it's mighty unhappy."
Akari's memory flashed back to her vow – the promise she'd made to herself to help Pokémon in need, just like she had with the Sizzlipede infestation in Eterna Forest. A sense of determination steeled her resolve. "I can help with that," she declared, her voice firm. "I have experience dealing with out-of-control Pokémon. I even helped resolve the Sizzlipede situation in Eterna Forest."
The man raised an eyebrow, a surprised glance crossing his features. "A Trainer, eh? Well, that's certainly a stroke of luck! Come with me. I'll get you introduced to the foreman. He'll decide what needs to be done."
As the man led her away, the tremors gradually subsided, leaving an unsettling silence in their wake. It was a stark reminder that Sinnoh held more secrets than anyone knew, and the balance between worlds might be more fragile than anyone dared to imagine.
••• ••• •••
Akari navigated the twisting passages of Wayward Cave, Monferno by her side. Her fiery tail cast a warm glow, supplementing the beam from the foreman's flashlight she clutched tightly. A map, also courtesy of the foreman, crinkled in her other hand. Its lines were a lifeline leading her towards the source of the tremors – the rampaging Pokémon.
A sudden tremor rocked the cavern walls, sending a shower of dust raining down. In the distance, a faint cry pierced the silence, "...blasting off again...!" It was the voice of Team Rocket! Her heart pounded against her ribs – were they the ones causing the chaos?
With renewed determination, she pushed forward, the map guiding her towards the source of the disturbance. Fueled by a surge of determination, Akari sprinted towards the source of the sound, Monferno keeping pace with a worried growl. Rounding a sharp corner, she stumbled upon a sight that sent a jolt through her. Before her stood the rampaging Pokémon, its figure barely fitting inside the range of her flashlight.
The rampaging Pokémon was unlike anything she expected. The Pokémon Akari is facing is as tall as her, but considerably broader, was a bipedal dragon Pokémon. Its body was a vibrant blue, and its stocky legs supported a powerful build. Unlike most dragons, it lacked a neck, its large, menacing mouth filled with razor-sharp teeth dominating its head. Two horns, shaped like miniature jet engines, flanked its head, and a large dorsal fin with a jagged notch on its head. But it was the creature's eyes that sent shivers down Akari's spine. They blazed a fiery red, a malevolent glow she recognized all too well – the mark of an Alpha Pokémon.
This wasn't just any Gible; this was the strongest of their kind, a creature brimming with raw power and unchecked aggression. Steeling her nerves, Akari issued a low command to Monferno. "Stay back for now," she murmured. "We need your light more than your fire right now." Monferno, sensing the gravity of the situation, gave a curt nod and retreated into the shadows, giving her some lighting.
Akari reached for another Pokeball, her gaze fixed on the Alpha Gible. "Roselia, it's your turn!" she declared, hurling the Luxury ball forward. With a flash of light, the elegant Grass-type Pokémon materialised, a rose held delicately between his petals was then swiftly held by his mouth.
The Alpha Gible watched Roselia's emergence with steely red eyes. Before Akari could even issue a command, the ground rumbled as Gible lashed out with a swift swipe. A swirling vortex of sand materialised instantaneously, churning towards Roselia with alarming speed.
"Dodge it!" Akari yelled, her voice strained with urgency. Roselia reacted with lightning reflexes, attempting a desperate leap to the side. Confined by the narrow cavern, however, the manoeuvre offered little escape. With an unnerving intelligence, the sand shifted its trajectory, relentlessly pursuing the Grass-type Pokémon.
Akari furrowed her brow, strategizing on the fly. Recalling Roselia wasn't an option – the Sand Tomb would continue to inflict damage while trapped within its grasp. But Roselia wasn't without his own arsenal.
"Leech Seed!" she barked, her voice ringing through the cavern. Roselia, his rose glowing faintly, responded with a burst of energy. A seed, propelled by unseen force, launched towards the Alpha Gible, striking it squarely on its chest. Vines erupted from the embedded seed, wrapping tightly around the rampaging Pokémon. A surge of energy flowed from the Gible, a life force syphoned away and transferred to Roselia, offering a small but crucial boost to her strength.
Gible roared in fury, the excruciating drain of energy evident in its thrashing movements. Determined to break free, it stomped its powerful legs on the cavern floor, triggering another attack – Bulldoze. A wave of earth-shattering tremors radiated outwards, slamming into Roselia. The Sand Tomb, clinging stubbornly to Roselia's legs, hampered his agility, rendering him a sitting target. A blue aura enveloped Roselia – the telltale sign of its lowered speed. Akari gritted her teeth. They were on the defensive, and the Alpha Gible was relentless.
"Slow it down, Roselia! Stun Spore!" Akari cried out. Reacting with practised agility, Roselia whipped its rose-tipped arm forward, launching a shimmering cloud of golden spores. Gible, still struggling against the leeching vines, was caught off guard. The spores engulfed the dragon Pokémon, crackling with electric energy. A jolt of paralysis seized Gible, its enraged thrashing momentarily replaced by a stunned tremor.
But the reprieve was short-lived. In a sudden display of volatile temperament, the Alpha Gible whipped its head towards Roselia, its crimson eyes blazing with renewed fury. Its powerful jaws snapped open, unleashing a torrent of violet flames – Dragon Breath. The attack erupted from Gible's mouth in a wide arc, filling the cavern with a wave of searing heat. Roselia, hampered by the clinging sand and its paralyzed legs, found itself trapped.
The inferno subsided, revealing Roselia enveloped in a shimmering blue aura. Because it looks like a Fire-type move, many would assume it inflicts burns. But instead, the energy seemed to be coursing through Roselia in an unsettling way. Just like the Stun Spore had paralyzed Gible, the Dragon Breath had done the same to Roselia. The Alpha Gible's attack, unpredictable and potent, had left both Pokémon locked in a precarious dance of paralysis instead of just itself.
Undeterred by the stalemate, Akari knew Roselia couldn't endure much longer. It was time to go on the offensive and force the Alpha Gible to play defence. "Magical Leaf!" she commanded, her voice ringing with newfound determination. Roselia responded with an elegant twirl, his rose-tipped arm whipping through the air. A flurry of razor-sharp petals materialised, transforming into a swirling green vortex that hurtled towards Gible.
The Alpha Gible remained rooted to the spot and braced itself for the onslaught, its body hunched low as the Magical Leaf attack ripped through the air. The barrage of petals sliced superficial wounds across Gible's hide, prompting a pained yelp.
With a keen eye, Akari noticed the Sand Tomb clinging to Roselia's legs finally dissipating. Relief washed over her, but caution remained. This was the perfect window – an opportunity to switch out. Just as she was about to recall Roselia, a stroke of luck intervened. Gible's paralyzed form convulsed with a sudden jolt of electricity. The paralysis from the Stun Spore had finally taken full effect, locking the Alpha Gible in a state of immobility.
Seizing this golden opportunity, Akari wasted no time. With a swift flick of her wrist, she returned Roselia to his Luxury Ball, a red beam enveloping the Grass-type Pokémon. Replacing it in her hand was a gleaming Heal Ball. "Ralts, it's your turn!" she declared, throwing the ball forward. In a flash of light, her Psychic-type materialised, tiny stars shimmering momentarily around her blue hair and dress before fading away. Akari knew the battle wasn't over, but with Roselia safely healed and a fresh Pokémon by her side, she felt a surge of renewed hope. This Alpha Gible might be strong, but she wouldn't back down. The cave echoed with the determined trill from Ralts, ready to take on the challenge.
Akari seized the opportunity presented by Gible's paralysis. "Hit them at a distance! Psybeam!" she commanded, her voice sharp with purpose. Ralts focused her psychic energy instantly. A beam of shimmering energy erupted from her brow, striking Gible head-on. The Alpha Gible's bulky frame offered little defence against the direct hit, and it roared in frustration.
Yet, despite the impact, Gible surprised Akari with its agility. In a flash of unexpected speed, the dragon Pokémon launched itself at Ralts. With an earth-shattering stomp, it unleashed another Bulldoze attack. The wave of tremors struck Ralts squarely, sending the Psychic-type Pokémon sprawling onto the cavern floor.
"Recover quickly! Draining Kiss!" Akari yelled, her voice laced with concern. Reacting with impressive resilience, Ralts scrambled to her feet and lunged at the towering Gible. Her lips met the dragon's cheek in a soft peck, and a pink aura enveloped Gible. Energy visibly drained from the Alpha Pokémon, syphoning into Ralts and revitalising her. However, the momentary contact came at a cost. Ralts yelped in pain, clutching her lips in a gesture of hurt.
Akari cursed inwardly. This reminded her of her encounter with Druddigon. Gible also had the Rough Skin ability, making close-quarter combat a risky proposition. But before she could formulate a new strategy, Gible opened its jaws once more, unleashing a torrent of blue flames – Dragon Breath. A sigh of relief escaped Akari's lips – a welcome reminder that Ralts, being a Psychic/Fairy-type, was immune to the Dragon-type attack.
The inferno subsided, revealing Gible panting heavily and were confused by the lack of damage their attack caused. The Leech Seed continued its relentless drain, and the combined attacks from Roselia and Ralts were clearly taking their toll. Sensing an opportunity, Akari reached into her bag and retrieved an Ultra Ball. This was it – time to end the battle. With a swift flick of her wrist, she hurled the ball forward.
The Ultra Ball sailed through the air, a blur against the backdrop of the cavern. Gible, momentarily stunned and disoriented, simply blinked as the ball connected with its head. A burst of red light engulfed the Alpha Pokémon, drawing it into the confines of the Ultra Ball. The ball clattered to the ground, wobbling precariously as a tense silence filled the cavern. Akari held her breath, counting each agonising click. Finally, with a satisfying click, the shaking ceased. A triumphant grin spread across Akari's face. The Alpha Gible had been captured.
Akari let out a shaky breath of relief as she approached the Ultra Ball, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. It was finally over. Staring at the Ultra Ball, she announced, "Looks like we found the last member of our little team, wouldn't you say?"
A silence in the air made Akari curiously glance at her Pokémon, when the cavern walls began to faintly illuminate. A soft, silvery glow pulsated from Ralts, bathing the space in an ethereal light. Akari's eyes widened in surprise. Could it be...?
With a dazzling luminescence, Ralts began to transform. Her tiny frame stretched and matured, legs and arms becoming more defined beneath the familiar blue dress, now transformed into a flowing tutu. The single horn atop her head split, migrating to either side, framing a face adorned with hair that cascaded down. When the light finally subsided, Kirlia stood proudly before Akari. Her marigold eyes, now more prominent thanks to a new hairstyle, sparkled with a newfound confidence. Gone were the days of constantly hidden blue legs; Kirlia's lower body was now elegantly exposed, complemented by arms that were still covered by the transformed dress, which had shed her previous blue hue for the same pristine white.
Kirlia closed her eyes, a serene smile playing on her lips, and launched into a graceful pirouette. As she twirled, her dress billowed around herself, creating a mesmerising spectacle. Finally, she stopped, her gaze meeting Akari's. A radiant smile bloomed on Kirlia's face, mirrored by the warmth in Akari's own eyes.
"Well, Kirlia," Akari chuckled, "today certainly has been a whirlwind of excitement and unexpected moments." Her gaze then shifted to the Ultra Ball resting in her palm. "Let's hope the good surprises keep coming."
With that declaration, Akari returned Kirlia to her Heal Ball. Monferno, sensing the celebratory mood, stepped forward, her fiery tail illuminating the path ahead. Together, trainer and Pokémon made their way back to the surface, the light from Akari's flashlight assisting Monferno in giving them light to see their way forward.
••• ••• •••
With a wave and a flurry of thanks from the relieved miners, Akari emerged from the cavern, the captured Alpha Gible secured within its Ultra Ball. Seeking a secluded spot, she ventured away from the mine entrance, eventually finding a clearing nestled amongst towering trees. One by one, she released her Pokémon, even Magikarp, who with a splash, dove headfirst into a nearby pool to overlook what Akari is planning. Finally, with a click, she released Gible.
The Alpha Pokémon emerged from its Pokeball, a whirlwind of confusion swirling in its crimson eyes. Its gaze darted around – at the unfamiliar environment, the diverse Pokémon that surrounded it, and finally at Akari herself. This frantic inspection became a loop, repeating with increasing agitation. Gible's rapid breaths grew deeper, louder, and Akari couldn't help but tense, bracing for another onslaught.
But instead of an attack, something entirely unexpected happened. Gible let out a miserable cry, a sound that tugged at Akari's heartstrings. It slumped onto its haunches, tears welling up and spilling over. Her own Pokémon exchanged bewildered glances, mirroring Akari's confusion.
This unexpected vulnerability painted a new picture. Was this Alpha Gible truly the ferocious leader Akari had anticipated? Could it be... a baby? The thought sparked a fount of understanding in Akari's eyes. Tentatively, she approached the teary-eyed Pokémon, her movements slow and gentle.
As she drew closer, a peculiar detail caught her eye. A faint green marking, resembling an upward-pointing arrow, adorned Gible's forehead. It was a symbol she couldn't recall seeing before, its meaning shrouded in mystery. Before Akari could ponder it further, Gible's tears subsided, replaced by a determined glint in its crimson eyes. It rose to its feet, stance low and ready.
Akari's Pokémon bristled, sensing the renewed tension. But Akari held up a hand, silencing their protests. "Gible," she addressed the dragon in a firm but calm voice, "let's settle this without using moves. A simple test of strength. If I win, I take charge. Is that understood?"
Gible, its gaze unwavering, gave a curt nod. A primal understanding passed between them. With a swift movement, Akari activated her Arc Belt, transforming her clothing into a set of protective gear resembling what she'd seen police use to train their Growlithe. This wasn't a battle she entered lightly. Gible's outburst of emotion had revealed more than just vulnerability – it had hinted at a fierce determination, a spark of potential that couldn't be ignored. This Alpha Gible, though young, possessed a raw power that demanded respect. In an instant, they both charged at each other.
Dust swirled around Akari and Gible as they grappled in the clearing. Akari, grateful for her past dedication to exercise, found herself surprisingly matched against the Alpha Pokémon. Whilst in the Dream, AKari gained a habit of training her body alongside her Pokémon. Months of training for the potential dangers of Mount Coronet – mostly running and dodging – had paid off in unexpected ways. She possessed a surprising amount of raw strength that allowed her to hold her own against Gible's brute force.
The struggle was a chaotic ballet of pushing and shoving. Gible, fueled by frustration, lunged and snapped. Its teeth sank into Akari's shoulder, but the padded gear absorbed the impact, leaving her unharmed. This misstep gave Akari the opening she needed. With a well-placed kick at Gible's legs, she momentarily destabilised the dragon. But instead of falling, Gible clung to her arm in a desperate attempt to regain leverage.
Seeing her chance, Akari reacted instantly. Wrapping her arms around Gible in a sudden embrace, she used the combined momentum to launch them both skyward. The air whooshed past them as they reached the apex of their leap, before gravity asserted its dominance. Akari landed with a thud, Gible cushioning her fall with its body.
Akari straddled the now-subdued Alpha Gible, the fight seemingly drained out of it. "Do you surrender, Gible?" she asked, her voice firm but not unkind. "That bite didn't even faze me. We could keep going if you want."
Gible remained unmoving, the fight seemingly drained from it. The crimson glow in its eyes faded, replaced by the familiar black of a regular Gible. Its gaze met Akari's, filled not with defiance but with a hint of resignation. A single tear rolled down its cheek as it gave a weak nod, acknowledging Akari's victory. The wild gleam in its eyes had dimmed, replaced by a flicker of something new – acceptance, perhaps even a sliver of respect. The Alpha Gible, though fierce, was still a young Pokémon, and Akari had managed to earn its submission not through brute force, but through sheer determination and a display of ingenuity. This wasn't just a victory over the Alpha Pokémon; it was the first step towards understanding it.
"Good choice, Gible!" Akari exclaimed, dismounting from the dragon's belly. With a familiar gesture, she activated her Arc-Belt, transforming back into her comfortable travelling attire. She then held up her arm to check the time on her Pokétch. "Now, how about we celebrate with lunch? I'm sure everyone's feeling a bit peckish."
The mere mention of food caused a collective perk among Akari's Pokémon. Even Gible, its initial confusion giving way to cautious curiosity, tilted its head in Akari's direction.
Unpacking her supplies, Akari set about preparing a post-battle meal. Kirlia, still adjusting to its newfound form – her graceful movements a little less coordinated at first – lent a hesitant hand. Akari chuckled fondly, offering gentle guidance as Kirlia adapted to her longer limbs. Magnemite, ever-efficient, accepted its pre-charged battery, its metallic body humming as it began to absorb the energy. Gible, meanwhile, observed the scene with wide, curious eyes.
Lunchtime arrived, and a sense of camaraderie filled the clearing. Each Pokémon enjoyed their specially prepared meal: berries for some, Pokémon Chow for others, and a specially designed flakes Magikarp's fish tank, who remained blissfully submerged. Magnemite continued to hum as it drained its battery, while Kirlia, ever the bottomless pit, devoured her food like a black hole as usual. Gible, initially hesitant, watched Kirlia's impressive display with a rumbling tummy. Soon, its own hunger pangs took over, and Gible dove into its meal with gusto, though its efforts paled in comparison to the newly evolved Kirlia.
As the last crumbs were devoured and Akari started cleaning up, Gible approached her. The dragon Pokémon looked around at the assembled team, its gaze lingering on each member before finally settling on Akari. Then, with a resolute nod, it stood before her in reverence.
At that moment, Akari's Move Scanner hummed to life, detecting Gible's presence and revealing its move set. But the information could wait. A smile bloomed on her face as she returned Gible's nod. Here, amidst the wilderness, the link with her final Pokémon has formed. As she held such thoughts, Akari's hand instinctually held the Proto Ball necklace in hope of a possible reunion to complete the party. While the path ahead might be uncertain, Akari felt a surge of confidence. Perhaps, with time and patience, Gible could truly become a major part of the team.
••• ••• •••
Akari stood at the entrance to Cycling Road, the designated path for non-motorized travellers traversing Route 206. As the name implies, the "Cycling" in Cycling Road referred to the rental bikes offered at the entrance, and alternative modes of transportation were permitted as long as they met size restrictions.
Akari, ever resourceful, opted to bypass the rental fees. A quick transformation of her Arc-Belt turned her shoes into sleek skates and her bandana into a sturdy helmet. With a nod of approval from the guards, she pushed off, the sloped path guiding her towards her next destination.
The journey began smoothly, a comfortable breeze ruffling her hair as she glided along the path. However, the peaceful scenery was interrupted by a blur approaching from the opposite direction, heading towards Eterna City. It wasn't a regular cyclist, but a sight that almost made Akari stop in her tracks. Atop a peculiar Pokémon, a rider sped past. The creature resembled a lizard, but with a fascinating twist – an inflated air sac shaped like a wheel adorned on its neck while its tail was emulating the other wheel by curling inwards. Completing the illusion of a bike were a saddle, handlebars, pedals, and even a headlight.
Intrigued, Akari whipped out her Pokédex and scanned the creature as it zipped by. "Cyclizar, the Mount Pokémon," the device announced in its robotic voice. "It can sprint at over 70 miles per hour while carrying a human. The rider's body heat warms Cyclizar's back and lifts the Pokémon's spirit."
Akari put away her Pokédex and refocused on the road as she stored this newfound knowledge in her memory with a smile gracing her lips. The world of Pokémon held endless surprises, and this unexpected encounter served as a delightful reminder that there is always something unexpected around any corner. With renewed focus, she turned her attention back to the road, the thrill of the journey propelling her forward.
••• ••• •••
Several days had passed since Akari's encounter with Gible. Despite his young age, Gible is already capable enough to stand toe to toe with the rest of her team. Because of his age and experience living exclusively in the dark caverns of Wayward Cave, Akari spent her time to get Gible acclimated to the outdoor environment instead of training them. That isn't to say she didn't test Gible on some fundamentals and for him to keep up with her commands while forming an understanding on a common battle style.
Now, on her way to Alamos Town, a detour presented itself. Rumours of a stone tablet depicting the legendary Pokémon Dialga and Palkia had reached her ears. Curiosity piqued, she ventured off to find the stone tablet. The path led her to a clearing dominated by a crumbled structure – a staircase leading upwards to the stone tablet. Crumbling pillars lay scattered around, their presence a haunting reminder of the once-grand Temple of Sinnoh that was destroyed in The Dream.
Akari ascended the stairs, her gaze drawn to the intricate carvings on the tablet. Two majestic figures, Dialga and Palkia, were depicted in a scene that radiated an air of ancient power. Below the figures, an inscription in the enigmatic Unown script beckoned her closer. With a practised hand, Akari traced the symbols, she read the poem written on the stone tablet:
FRIEND
SUBETE NO INOCHI HA
BETSU NO INOCHI TO DEAI
NANIKA WO UMIDASU
While Akari understood what the words meant, she has to assume this is a cryptic message hinting at a connection between the legendary Pokémon in some way. Lost in contemplation, she didn't notice the growing crowd gathering at the base of the staircase.
"Champion Cynthia is here!" a voice suddenly boomed, drawing Akari's attention. She turned to see the esteemed Champion of Sinnoh emerge from the throng. Cynthia, however, seemed unfazed by the sudden attention. In fact, she was casually enjoying a three-scoop ice cream cone, a delightful mix of vibrant flavours.
Even amidst the crowd, Cynthia commanded attention. Her confidence radiated an aura that set her apart. Tall and slender, she possessed striking features. Her blonde hair, reaching past her knees, cascaded in gentle waves, with a single strand playfully framing her grey eyes. Cynthia's attire reflected her elegance: black straight-leg trousers paired with a long, black coat. The coat boasted a V-neck and black fur trimming its cuffs and hem, with a single teardrop-shaped pearl adorning the centre. Beneath the coat, a black top peeked out. Completing her ensemble were black kitten-heel pumps, each featuring a single yellow stripe. Cynthia also sported a black fur ruff circling her neck, adorned on both sides with pairs of teardrop-shaped hair clips, each echoing the yellow stripes on her shoes.
Despite Cynthia's public persona – the confident, ever-smiling Champion – Akari couldn't help but see glimpses of something deeper. The resemblance Cynthia shared with Volo, the enigmatic Ginkgo Guild leader, and to a lesser extent, Cogita, the mysterious scholar, lingered in Akari's mind. While Akari recognized Cynthia as her own distinct individual, a sliver of unease crept in. Volo's hidden darkness, his ambition that threatened the region's balance, left a scar. Could Cynthia, the seemingly benevolent Champion, harbour a similar secret agenda? The thought sent a shiver down Akari's spine. Yet, staring into Cynthia's warm smile, Akari desperately hoped this was just paranoia.
As Cynthia approached the tablet, their eyes met with a warm smile sent Akari's way. "Hello there," she greeted, taking a lick of her ice cream. "Fascinated by the tablet as well, are you? Would you mind if I took a look?"
"Of course not, Champion," Akari replied, surprised by the encounter. "I've already read the inscription, but I'm still trying to grasp its deeper meaning."
Cynthia raised an eyebrow, a flicker of intrigue in her eyes. "You can read Unown? How interesting. Perhaps we can discuss this tablet later, then?" With another smile, she brushed a stray strand of blonde hair from her face before turning her attention back to the inscription, the ice cream not forgotten as she gave it another absent-minded lick.
A hush fell over the crowd as Cynthia finished reading the inscription, the final bite of her ice cream disappearing with a satisfied sigh. No sooner had she lifted her hand from the tablet than a voice, sharp and unexpected, sliced through the silence. Both Cynthia and Akari turned towards the source.
"You're Cynthia, the Champion?" Paul said with a determined glint in his eyes stood there, his gaze unwavering.
Cynthia met his stare calmly. "Yes, that's me." she confirmed.
"The name's Paul," he declared, his voice leaving no room for argument, "and I'm from Veilstone City." He paused for a beat, then delivered his message with a brusqueness that surprised everyone in the clearing. "I challenge you to a battle."
The crowd erupted in a cacophony of gasps and murmurs. A random trainer challenging the Champion in such a public setting was unheard of. Akari, still processing the audacity, couldn't help but glance behind Paul. There, amidst the bewildered onlookers, she spotted a familiar trio – Ash, Dawn, and Brock. They must have heard the rumours about Cynthia's presence.
A flicker of surprise crossed Cynthia's face, quickly replaced by a thoughtful smile. She closed her eyes for a moment, seemingly lost in contemplation. "It's been a while since I've been given a field challenge," she murmured as she opened them again. "Are you competing in the Sinnoh League, Paul?"
"Yes," he replied curtly, awaiting Cynthia's response.
"I see." Cynthia nodded, a hint of delight dancing in her eyes. With a measured step, she descended from the small platform, placing herself on equal footing with the young trainer. As her foot touched the ground, a confident smile spread across her face. "Alright," she declared, her voice ringing with a quiet power, "I accept your challenge."
