Hailey and Jay had been partners for two days, and Jay was already getting into trouble.
Hailey sat in her truck, watching Jay play soccer with his niece.
"Nice job, Snowy!" Jay grinned.
Rosey smiled and tumbled to the ground.
"Whoopsie-daisy!" Angela chuckled.
Rosey leapt into Angela's arms, tugging at her hair.
"Thanks, Rosey loves playing soccer with you," Angela said.
Jay nodded and kissed Rosey on the head.
"I'll see you soon, okay? Love you, Snowy."
Rosey waved and walked away with Angela.
After they left, Jay gathered up the soccer balls.
Jay noticed Hailey in her truck.
He put the balls down and walked over.
"Are you following me?" Jay asked, smirking.
Hailey smirked and looked down.
"Well, that's what happens when you lie to your partner."
Jay nodded and spoke.
"Lying, huh?" Jay smirked.
Hailey nodded and smirked.
"Yep! So, I did my homework."
Jay leaned on the car window, glancing around.
"Oh, you did, did you?"
Hailey nodded.
"Last week, you told me she was an unwitting."
Jay sighed and nodded.
"You gotta walk away from this one. You're putting yourself and the team at risk of getting fired. Losing our jobs, you're in the hot seat."
Jay sighed and nodded. "You gotta walk away from this one. You're putting yourself and the team at risk of getting fired. Losing our jobs, you're in the hot seat."
Jay looked down for a moment, then met Hailey's eyes. "I'll sort it out," he said firmly. "I promise."
Hailey raised an eyebrow. "How?"
Jay leaned in closer. "I'll talk to Angela. I'll make sure she understands and keeps Rosey out of it. We can't afford any more mistakes."
Hailey nodded. "Alright, Jay. But do it fast. We don't have much time."
Jay straightened up and smiled. "I will. Trust me."
Hailey watched as Jay walked back to his truck. She hoped he could fix things before it was too late.
Later, Hailey and Jay were working on a case when Jay received a text from Angela saying she had been kidnapped.
"Hails, I gotta go!" Jay exclaimed.
"Now? We're in the middle of a case!" Hailey responded, surprised.
Jay's face was tense. "It's Angela. She's been kidnapped."
Hailey's eyes widened. "What? Are you sure?"
Jay showed her the text message. "I have to find her. She and Rosey could be in danger."
Hailey took a deep breath. "Alright, go. I'll cover for you here. Just be careful."
Jay nodded, grateful. "Thanks, Hailey. I'll keep you updated."
As Jay rushed off, Hailey watched him go, hoping he would be able to save Angela and Rosey in time.
Jay sped to Angela's house, his mind racing. As he pulled up, he quickly dumped his badge and gun into the glovebox. He didn't want to risk them being used against him.
He approached the house cautiously, noticing the front door was slightly ajar. His heart pounded as he pushed it open and stepped inside.
"Angela? Rosey?" he called out, his voice echoing through the empty rooms.
The house was eerily quiet. Jay moved through the living room, his eyes scanning for any signs of a struggle. He found Angela's phone on the floor, the screen cracked.
"Angela!" he shouted again, more urgently this time.
Suddenly, Jay felt a sharp pain at the back of his head. Everything went black as he collapsed to the floor.
When he came to, he was being dragged towards a van. His vision was blurry, but he could make out two figures hauling him into the back. The doors slammed shut, and the van started moving.
Jay struggled to stay conscious, his mind racing with thoughts of Angela and Rosey. He knew he had to find a way out, but for now, he was at the mercy of his captors.
At the district, Hailey was walking past the interrogation rooms, leaving a voicemail for Jay.
"Jay, this is my third message. I was annoyed at the last two, but now I'm getting worried. Call me back."
Hailey put her phone back into her pocket and noticed Trudy.
"Hey, is Halstead on an undercover run?" Trudy asked.
Hank leaned against a desk and shook his head. "No, he should be here."
Trudy sighed. "He was due in court and never showed up."
Hailey sighed and looked down. Where was he?
"Hailey, have you heard from him?" Hank asked.
Hailey looked up. "I called him a few times, but no answer."
"Where's his truck parked?" Hank asked.
Trudy turned serious. "On a street near Englewood."
The unit all stood up, waiting for Hank's command.
"Check it out!" Hank ordered.
The team nodded, and Kim squeezed Hailey's shoulder as they walked downstairs.
Hailey arrived at Angela's house first and walked up the steps.
The unit arrived shortly after, and Vanessa checked inside Jay's truck.
"Car's clean!" Vanessa reported.
Hailey knew Jay would hide his badge and gun in a safe place. "Check the glovebox!" she ordered.
Hailey walked upstairs and looked through the windows. Blood was splattered all over the walls.
"I got Halstead's badge and gun!" Vanessa called out.
Hailey knew Jay wouldn't go undercover without a good reason. "So, he went undercover…."
Hailey noticed the door slightly open and drew her gun. The unit followed her lead, and Hailey nodded at Adam.
Adam kicked the door open, and the unit rushed inside.
"JAY!"
"HALSTEAD! CALL OUT!"
Hailey walked into the bathroom and saw a puddle of blood.
There was a knock, and it was Adam. "It's Ruzek!"
Hailey opened the door and lowered her gun.
"5021 Eddie: Roll forensics to 1900 Englewood. I got blood and an officer has been abducted." Kim radioed.
Hailey looked at blood, and all thoughts ran through her head.
Jay slowly regained consciousness, his head throbbing from the blow. He found himself in a dimly lit warehouse, his hands tied behind his back and his feet bound. The air was cold and damp, and the sound of dripping water echoed through the space.
He struggled to sit up, his eyes adjusting to the darkness. As he looked around, he saw Angela and Rosey huddled together in a corner, their faces pale with fear.
"Angela, Rosey!" Jay called out, his voice hoarse.
Angela looked up, relief flooding her eyes. "Jay! Are you okay?"
Jay nodded, though he felt far from okay. "I'm fine. Are you both alright?"
Angela nodded, holding Rosey close. "We're scared, but we're okay."
Jay's mind raced as he tried to think of a way to free them. He knew Hailey and the team would be looking for him, but he had to buy them some time.
"Stay calm," he said, trying to reassure them. "We'll get out of this."
Just then, the door to the warehouse creaked open, and a figure stepped inside. Jay squinted, trying to make out who it was.
"Well, well, look who's awake," the figure said, their voice dripping with malice.
Jay's heart sank as he recognized the voice. It was someone from his past, someone he had hoped never to see again.
"What do you want?" Jay demanded, trying to keep his voice steady.
The figure stepped closer, revealing a sinister smile. "Revenge, Jay. It's time to pay for what you did."
The figure's sinister smile widened as they approached Jay. Without warning, they delivered a swift blow to Jay's head, sending him back into unconsciousness. Angela and Rosey screamed, their cries echoing through the cold, damp warehouse.
The figure didn't stop there. They began to pound on Jay, each hit more brutal than the last. Angela and Rosey watched in horror, unable to do anything to help. Tears streamed down their faces as they clung to each other, praying for a miracle.
"Stop it! Please, stop!" Angela begged, her voice breaking.
The figure paused for a moment, turning to face them. "This is just the beginning," they said coldly. "Jay has a lot to answer for."
As the beating continued, Jay's body lay limp, taking the punishment. Angela and Rosey could only hope that help would arrive soon, that Hailey and the team would find them before it was too late.
Hailey's eyes were glued to the screen, her fingers tapping rhythmically on the keyboard as she navigated through the footage.
Kevin leaned against the doorframe, his expression serious. "Hey Hails, did Jay have any grudges with anyone?" he asked.
Hailey shook her head. "Not that I know of, but Jay always did like to keep things close to the vest. Why do you ask?"
Kevin clicked on the footage, his expression grim. "Well, Jay has a target on his head."
Hailey looked over, her concern growing. "For what?"
"Killing Marcus West. The case went cold," Kevin replied.
Hailey remembered how much that case had affected Jay. "That tore him apart," she said softly.
Kevin nodded. "You should also know, Jamie, Marcus's brother, was let out on bail."
Hailey's eyes widened. "When?"
"Today," Kevin answered.
Hailey stood up, grabbing her jacket. "I'll tell Sarge."
Without another word, she ran downstairs and into her truck, her mind racing.
Jay slowly regained consciousness, his vision blurry. He noticed Angela and Rosey lying unconscious nearby.
With a determined effort, Jay pulled against the pole binding him and managed to break free. He quickly got up and checked their pulses.
"Dammit," he muttered, feeling a surge of panic.
Suddenly, a sharp pain exploded in his back as someone struck him, followed by the searing agony of a gunshot wound. Gritting his teeth, Jay fought back, managing to push the assailant against the wall.
"You killed my brother…" the figure whispered, their voice filled with venom.
Jay's mind raced. "Marcus West killed a little girl," he said, his voice strained. "I had no choice."
Jamie, Marcus's brother, glared at him with pure hatred. "Liar!" he shouted, kicking Jay hard in the leg, causing him to collapse to the ground.
Jay tried to defend himself, but the pain was overwhelming. Jamie quickly pulled out a syringe and injected Jay with a sedative. Jay's vision blurred further, and he felt his strength fading.
As darkness closed in, Jay heard Jamie's voice, cold and unforgiving. "This is for Marcus."
Jay's last thought before losing consciousness was a desperate hope that he'd get found soon.
Hailey sped through the streets, her mind racing with the new information. She couldn't shake the feeling that something terrible was about to happen. As she pulled up to station, she quickly parked and ran inside, heading straight for Sarge's office.
"Sarge!" Hailey called out, bursting through the door. "We have a situation."
Hank looked up from his desk, his expression serious. "What is it, Hailey?"
"Jay's in trouble. Jamie West, Marcus's brother, was released on bail today. Kevin found some suspicious messages in Jay's phone, and now we've lost all leads on him," Hailey explained, her voice urgent.
Sarge's eyes narrowed. "Do we have any idea where Jay might be?"
Hailey shook her head. "No, but we need to find him fast. Jamie might be his kidnapper."
Sarge stood up, grabbing his jacket. "Alright, let's get the team together and start searching. We'll check all empty lots and warehouses and see if we can ."
Hailey nodded, feeling a surge of determination. "I'll head to the warehouse. Jay mentioned he had some work there recently."
"Be careful, Hailey," Voight warned. "And keep us updated."
Hailey gave a quick nod and rushed back to her truck. As she drove towards the warehouse, she couldn't help but worry about what she might find. She had to get to Jay before it was too late.
Hailey arrived at the warehouse, her heart pounding. She parked her truck and approached the building cautiously, her eyes scanning the area for any signs of trouble. As she entered the dimly lit space, she spotted Jay lying unconscious on the floor, with Jamie standing over him.
Her breath caught in her throat. She quickly reached for her radio. "Sarge, this is Hailey. I've found Jay. He's unconscious, and Jamie West is here. I need backup, now."
"Copy that, Hailey. Backup is on the way. Stay safe," Sarge's voice crackled through the radio.
Hailey took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. She couldn't wait for backup; Jay needed her now. She stepped forward, her voice firm. "Jamie, step away from him."
Jamie turned to face her, his expression twisted with anger. "Stay out of this, Hailey. This is between me and Jay."
Hailey kept her eyes on Jamie, her hand hovering near her sidearm. "I can't do that, Jamie. Put the weapon down and step away."
Jamie hesitated, his grip on the gun tightening. "He killed my brother," he spat.
Hailey took a cautious step closer. "I know you're hurting, but this isn't the way. Let us handle this the right way. Please, Jamie."
For a moment, it seemed like Jamie might listen. But then his eyes hardened, and he raised the gun towards Jay. Hailey's training kicked in, and she drew her weapon, aiming it at Jamie.
"Don't do it, Jamie," she warned, her voice steady. "Put the gun down."
The tension in the air was palpable as they stood there, locked in a standoff. Hailey's heart raced, but she kept her focus, ready to act if necessary. She just hoped backup would arrive in time.
Jamie's hand shook as he aimed the gun at Jay, his emotions boiling over. "This is for Marcus," he muttered, his voice trembling.
Before Hailey could react, Jamie's finger slipped on the trigger, and the gun went off. The shot echoed through the warehouse, and Jay gasped as the bullet struck him in the chest.
"No!" Hailey screamed, rushing forward. She tackled Jamie to the ground, disarming him in one swift motion. "Stay down!" she ordered, her voice filled with urgency.
Jamie lay on the ground, stunned, as Hailey turned her attention to Jay. She pressed her hands against the wound, trying to stop the bleeding. "Hang in there, Jay. Backup is on the way," she said, her voice shaking.
Jay's eyes fluttered open, pain etched across his face. "Hailey…" he whispered, his voice weak.
"Stay with me, Jay," Hailey urged, her heart pounding. "Help is coming."
Within moments, the sound of sirens filled the air as backup arrived. Paramedics rushed in, taking over from Hailey and working quickly to stabilize Jay.
Hailey stood back, her hands covered in blood, watching as they loaded Jay onto a stretcher. She felt a mix of relief and fear, hoping that Jay would pull through.
Sarge approached her, his expression grim. "You did good, Hailey. We'll take it from here."
Hailey nodded, her eyes never leaving Jay as he was taken away. "Just make sure he makes it," she said softly.
Sarge placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "We'll do everything we can."
As the paramedics and police worked around her, Hailey took a deep breath, trying to steady herself.
The paramedics worked swiftly, stabilizing Jay as best they could. One of the medics looked up and called out, "Who's riding with him?"
Hailey didn't hesitate. "I am," she said firmly, stepping forward.
The medic nodded, appreciating her decisiveness. "Alright, let's move."
Hailey climbed into the ambulance, taking a seat next to Jay. She grabbed his hand, squeezing it gently. "Hang in there, Jay. You're going to be okay," she whispered, her voice filled with determination.
As the ambulance sped towards the hospital, Hailey kept her eyes on Jay, willing him to stay strong. She knew the road ahead would be tough, but she was ready to fight for him every step of the way.
As Hailey waited anxiously outside the operating room, she heard hurried footsteps approaching. She turned to see Kim, Adam, Antonio, Hank, Kevin, and Vanessa rushing in, their faces etched with concern.
"Hailey, what's the status on Jay?" Hank asked urgently.
"He's in surgery," Hailey replied, her voice steady despite the turmoil inside. "Dr. Choi is working on him now. He was shot in the chest, but they managed to stabilize him before bringing him in."
The team exchanged worried glances. "Do we know who did this?" Adam asked.
"Jamie West," Hailey said, her expression hardening. "He blamed Jay for his brother's death. We need to make sure he's secured and that Jay is protected."
Kim nodded. "We'll handle Jamie. Right now, our priority is making sure Jay pulls through."
Hailey felt a surge of gratitude for her team. "Thank you. I know Jay would appreciate it."
As they discussed their next steps, the doors to the operating room opened, and Dr. Choi stepped out, his scrubs stained with blood. The room fell silent as everyone turned to him, waiting for news.
"He's out of surgery," Dr. Choi announced. "We were able to remove the bullet and repair the damage. He's stable, but the next 24 hours are critical."
Hailey let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding. "Can I see him?"
Dr. Choi nodded. "He's being moved to the ICU. You can see him once he's settled."
Hailey thanked Dr. Choi and turned to her team. "Let's make sure Jay has the protection he needs. We can't let anything else happen to him."
Kevin placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "We'll take shifts. Jay won't be alone."
Vanessa nodded in agreement. "We've got this, Hailey."
Hailey felt a renewed sense of determination. They would get through this together, and she would be there for Jay every step of the way.
As Hailey and the team waited for Jay to be settled in the ICU, the tension in the air was palpable. They knew the next 24 hours were crucial for Jay's recovery.
Once Jay was moved to the ICU, Hailey was the first to enter his room. She approached his bedside, her heart aching at the sight of him hooked up to various machines. She gently took his hand, squeezing it reassuringly.
"Hey, Jay," she whispered. "You're going to get through this. We're all here for you."
Kim, Adam, Antonio, Hank, Kevin, and Vanessa stood outside the room, watching through the glass. Hank turned to the group, his voice firm. "We need to make sure Jamie West is secured and that Jay is protected around the clock. We'll take shifts."
Adam nodded. "I'll take the first shift. No one gets near Jay without clearance."
Kim added, "I'll coordinate with the hospital security to ensure we have all exits covered."
Antonio looked at Hailey. "You should get some rest, Hailey. We'll take it from here."
Hailey shook her head. "I'm not leaving his side. Not until I know he's out of danger."
Vanessa placed a comforting hand on Hailey's shoulder. "We'll all be here, Hailey. Jay's strong. He'll pull through."
Kevin chimed in, "And when he wakes up, he'll see that we never left him."
Hailey felt a surge of gratitude for her team. They were more than colleagues; they were family. "Thank you, everyone. Jay's lucky to have you all."
As the team settled into their roles, Hailey remained by Jay's side.
Jay lay unconscious in the hospital bed, the steady beeping of the monitors the only sound in the room. Hailey sat by his side, holding his hand, while Vanessa stood nearby, watching over them both.
Hailey sighed, breaking the silence. "You know, Jay's always been so tough and stubborn. No matter what life throws at him, he just keeps pushing through."
Vanessa nodded, a small smile on her face. "Yeah, that's Jay for you. He's a fighter."
Hailey looked down at Jay, her eyes filled with worry. "I just wish he'd let people in more. He always tries to handle everything on his own."
Vanessa stepped closer, placing a hand on Hailey's shoulder. "Hailey, you know why he does that. He cares about everyone so much that he doesn't want to burden them with his problems."
Hailey nodded, her voice soft. "I know. But sometimes, I wish he'd realize that he doesn't have to go through everything alone."
Vanessa's smile grew warmer. "Hailey, it's obvious how much you care about him. And it's not just because he's your partner. You love him, don't you?"
Hailey's eyes widened, and she looked up at Vanessa, her heart pounding. "I… I don't know. Maybe I do. But what if he doesn't feel the same way?"
Vanessa squeezed Hailey's shoulder gently. "Hailey, anyone can see how much Jay cares about you. He's just as stubborn about his feelings as he is about everything else. But deep down, I think he feels the same way."
Hailey took a deep breath, her eyes returning to Jay. "I just want him to wake up and be okay. That's all that matters right now."
Vanessa nodded. "And when he does, you'll have the chance to tell him how you feel. For now, just be here for him. He needs you."
Hailey smiled, feeling a sense of clarity and determination. "Thanks, Vanessa. I needed to hear that."
Vanessa returned the smile. "Anytime, Hailey. We're all here for both of you."
As they stood together, watching over Jay.
Jay slowly opened his eyes, blinking against the harsh hospital lights. He felt groggy and disoriented, but the familiar sight of Hailey by his side brought him a sense of comfort.
"Hey," he croaked, his voice weak.
Hailey's eyes lit up with relief. "Jay! You're awake," she said, squeezing his hand gently. "How are you feeling?"
Jay managed a small smile. "Like I got hit by a truck. But seeing you here makes it better."
Hailey chuckled softly, her eyes misting over. "You gave us all quite a scare."
Jay's expression grew serious. "What happened? The last thing I remember is Jamie…"
Hailey nodded. "Jamie shot you, but you're going to be okay. The doctors managed to remove the bullet and repair the damage. You're safe now."
Jay sighed, closing his eyes for a moment. "Thank you, Hailey. For everything."
Hailey took a deep breath, her heart pounding. "Jay, there's something I need to tell you."
Jay opened his eyes, looking at her with curiosity. "What is it?"
Hailey hesitated, then decided to take the plunge. "Jay, I care about you. A lot. More than just as a partner or a friend. I… I love you."
Jay's eyes widened in surprise, and for a moment, he was speechless. Then, a slow smile spread across his face. "Hailey, I… I love you too. I just didn't know how to say it."
Hailey felt a wave of relief and joy wash over her. "You don't have to say anything more. Just focus on getting better. We'll figure everything else out together."
Jay nodded, his smile growing. "Together," he echoed.
As they sat there, holding hands, Hailey felt protected and safe.
Hailey, exhausted from the long hours of worry and stress, had finally fallen asleep in the chair next to Jay's bed. Her head rested on the edge of the mattress, her hand still holding his.
Jay stirred, feeling a wave of nausea wash over him. He tried to sit up, but the effort was too much. Before he could call out, he felt his stomach churn violently, and he began to throw up.
The sound jolted Hailey awake. She quickly assessed the situation and grabbed a nearby basin, holding it under Jay's chin to catch the vomit. "It's okay, Jay. I've got you," she said soothingly, her voice calm despite the urgency.
A nurse rushed in, alerted by the commotion. "Let's get him cleaned up," she said, moving efficiently to help Jay.
Hailey stayed by Jay's side, wiping his face with a damp cloth. "You're going to be okay," she reassured him, her eyes filled with concern.
Jay looked at her, his face pale and sweaty. "I'm sorry," he mumbled, embarrassed.
"Don't be," Hailey said firmly. "You're still recovering. This is just a bump in the road."
The nurse finished her work and gave Jay a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "We'll keep an eye on him. It's not uncommon after surgery."
Hailey nodded, grateful for the nurse's help. She turned back to Jay, her expression softening. "Try to rest, Jay. I'll be right here."
Jay managed a weak smile. "Thanks, Hailey. For everything."
Hailey squeezed his hand gently. "Always, Jay. Now get some rest."
As Jay closed his eyes, Hailey settled back into her chair, watching over him.
Tears began to roll down Jay's face, his expression a mix of pain and vulnerability. Hailey noticed immediately and leaned closer, her concern deepening.
"Jay, what's wrong?" she asked softly, her voice filled with worry.
Jay shook his head, trying to brush it off. "It's nothing, Hailey. I'm fine," he mumbled, but his trembling body betrayed his words.
Hailey wasn't convinced. She gently climbed onto the bed beside him, wrapping her arms around his trembling form. "Jay, it's okay. You don't have to hide anything from me," she whispered, her voice soothing.
Jay's defenses crumbled, and he let out a shaky breath. "I'm scared, Hailey. I don't know if I can get through this," he admitted, his voice breaking.
Hailey held him tighter, her heart aching for him. "You're not alone, Jay. I'm here, and so is the rest of the team. We're going to get through this together."
Jay buried his face in her shoulder, his tears soaking into her shirt. "Thank you," he whispered, his voice barely audible.
Hailey stroked his hair gently, her own eyes filling with tears. "I love you, Jay. And I'm not going anywhere."
Jay's grip on her tightened, and for the first time since the ordeal began, he felt a glimmer of hope.
Hailey held Jay close, feeling his trembling body gradually calm down. She continued to stroke his hair, whispering soothing words of comfort. The room was quiet, save for the soft beeping of the monitors and the occasional sniffle from Jay.
After a while, Jay pulled back slightly, looking into Hailey's eyes. "I don't know what I'd do without you," he said, his voice still shaky but filled with gratitude.
Hailey smiled, wiping away his tears with her thumb. "You don't have to find out. I'm here, and I'm not going anywhere."
Jay nodded, a small smile forming on his lips. "I love you, Hailey."
"I love you too, Jay," Hailey replied, her heart swelling with emotion.
They stayed like that for a while, finding comfort in each other's presence. Eventually, Jay's eyes grew heavy, and he drifted off to sleep, his breathing steady and calm.
Hailey watched over him, her heart filled with a mix of relief and determination. She knew the road to recovery would be long and challenging, but with their love and the support of their team, they could face anything together.
As the first light of dawn began to filter through the hospital window, Hailey felt a renewed sense of hope. They had made it through the darkest night, and now, with Jay by her side, she was ready to face whatever the future held.
