Things have not turned for the better ever since Georgia Madchen was murdered. It seemed as if her murder was the first thing that would slowly unfold all the darkness and the lies hidden behind fake smiles and evasive excuses.
And it all started when new evidence appeared as the search on Hobbs started to finally offer fruits.
It was the 5th day after the murder and Jack with Rana were in the primer's office. They were looking through some reports that their agents had found on Hobbs before Brian and Jimmy knocked on the closed wooden door.
Upon entering, Jack and Rana noticed that the two men seemed out of breath; as if they had been running towards the office to bring the news. The female agent would not find it that surprising if that was the case and would excuse their condition merely to the fact that both were quite out of shape.
"Yes?" Jack asked, looking at them behind his reading glasses.
He was sitting on his chair and across from him, sat Rana; with papers on her lap and on the desk between them.
Brian Zeller was the first to speak, once he got his breath under control. "We found train tickets purchased by Garret Jacob Hobbs."
Jack blinked as he processed what he had just been told. "Tickets. Two."
"Tickets were for the same train line one of his victims was using," Jimmy added next.
Rana frowned faintly, her mind connecting the dots faster than Jack. "Elise Nichols." She said and earned a head nod from the two male geniuses.
Jimmy chose to continue. "Found more instances of Hobbs crossing with victims. Dinner receipts for two. Two hotel rooms near the same campuses."
Brian nodded his head in agreement. "We know he wasn't travelling alone."
This made Rana pale a few tones as she connected the dots on what was going on, let alone what that meant. She feared to look at Jack but she did anyway, only to see that he was on the same path as she was.
"He was travelling with his daughter." He concluded, mentally satisfied that at least there was some progress in one of their cases; even if it was a small progress.
Rana got her mind under control again and tried not to give away too many things, as she focused on the topic.
She had long talked with Hannibal about Abigail and both had suspected that the girl had some part in the killings. While Abigail had not directly taken part in the murders, it would not be unheard of the little scared girl to obey her father; especially if the said father twisted his words to justify his actions.
It had happened before and easily could happen again.
While Rana doubted Abigail had truly killed anyone, it did not change the image the girl would have in the eyes of the law. She was an accessory to the murder, perhaps even an accomplishment if Jack plays his cards right.
This would ruin Abigail's chances and no judge would spare her. It would end up with the girl sent to Prison and Rana knew, if that were to happen, it was game over...for all of them.
Brian Zeller seemed to have more to say; throwing more fuel into the fire and making Jack even more determined to get his hands on Abigail. "They were registered for an orientation program at St. Cloud State on the Mississippi, where the Nichols girl was going to school."
"Abigail Hobbs attended orientations at every school where a girl was abducted by the Minnesota Shrike," Jimmy added.
"Within days of the abduction."
"She was with her father when he chose the girls."
The evidence was piling up too fast for Rana's liking and she had chosen not to comment anything, afraid she would not be able to keep her professionalism if she did. That did earn her a few looks from Jack but he was too focused on the new evidence pointing at Abigail to truly question while his protégé was suddenly so quiet.
"Or she helped him choose the girls," Jack concluded.
This made Rana find the strength and comment, trying to get a better idea of what plan Jack was forming in his mind...and what trial he was about to stage for little Abigail.
"You think that is the connection the Copy Cat has to Garret Jacob Hobbs could be family?" she asked, wishing to confirm if she had read his thoughts and his innuendos right.
Much to her dismay, Jack nodded his head in agreement. "The Copy Cat was inspired by her own father? Killed Cassie Boyle to impress Dad? Killed Marissa Schuur in memoriam and then killed Nick Boyle to cover her tracks?"
Yet, the female Wolfskin was not going to go down without a fight. She had vowed to protect Abigail and she was ready to do so.
"Why would she kill Sutcliffe and the Madchen girl? It doesn't fit up in an MO" Rana argued, hoping somehow to help break Jack's latest fixation with Abigail.
Unfortunately for her, her words did not affect him. Jack was determined and he was not going to stop now.
"Either she's got a taste for it or she wants to impress someone new." He said and stood up. "Let's go pay Abigail Hobbs a visit"
This is how Rana and Jack found themselves heading for the Psychiatric Hospital to speak with Abigail. The female Wolfskin was nervous but hid it well behind a mask, hiding how she felt about all of this.
Jack was on the right trail and she knew him well enough, to know that he was not going to drop the chase; especially now that he got a new lead to help him. Like a well-trained hunting hound, he had picked up the scent of the prey and was locked on finding and capturing it.
However, that did not mean Rana could not try. Being present would help, for starters, to ensure Abigail did not risk exposing them all when Jack would go hard on her. In addition, she could take notes and even somehow change Jack's mind one way or another.
Of course, afterwards, she would have to talk with Will and Hannibal to fix this or somehow find a way to protect Abigail; and also themselves.
When they arrived at the Psychiatric Ward of the Hospital, Rana picked up different kinds of scents the moment she stepped in. Some were more familiar and others were related to the cleaning detergents used frequently to keep the place clean and sterile.
However, she also happened to pick up two familiar scents; the presence of one confusing her more than the other.
Yet, as her eyes focused forward; she only saw the owner of one of those scents...Freddie Lounds.
She was sitting alone on one of the white round plastic tables. Immediately, both of them narrowed their eyes on the noisy reporter while the two policemen following right behind them; were ready to interfere if the order was given.
Freddie seemed to notice them first, putting on a fake smile. "Hello, Agent Crawford, Agent Stones" she greeted them with all the fake pleasantries.
"Freddie Lounds." Jack acknowledged her as both he and Rana came to a halt in front of her, none choosing to sit around the same table as her.
"You look like you came here to arrest somebody. Is it Abigail Hobbs or Will Graham?"
This made the two FBI to exchange a look, although Rana quickly suspected why Freddie asked such questions out of the blue.
"Will Graham was here?" Jack asked while Rana remained quiet.
She had picked up his scent, which was why it had confused her but she did not rush to any conclusions; believing that Will had simply chosen to visit Abigail.
"Then it was Abigail Hobbs."
"Where is she?"
Freddie seemed to enjoy the fact that she knew more than they did and she did not hide it. However, for the sake of not chasing her luck and ending up behind bars, she chose to answer their questions.
"One of the other girls said Special Agent Graham snuck her out. Don't know why he would feel the need to be sneaky. He's registered as one of her guardians. The irony." She said, making Rana frown.
"Anybody say where they were going?" The female Wolfskin asked and earned a look from Freddie. Rana could not help but roll her eyes at the drama, knowing the noisy reporter too well now; much to her dismay. "We know you asked."
Freddie shrugged her shoulders. "Said they were off without a peep. Attendants don't even know they're gone. I wonder what they're up to. Since you came here to arrest Abigail, I'd say it's no good."
This made Jack and Rana blink slowly at the new piece of information. However, it was the female agent who excused herself and let Jack handle Freddie while she moved towards the door; her phone in hand.
Firstly, she tried to call Will and pray to find some reason behind his mysterious behaviour but he did not seem to pick it up. Yet, Rana was determined to try and she did try two more times...until she realized Will was not picking it up on purpose.
She glanced at Jack for a moment, seeing him almost done talking with Freddie. In one last attempt, she dialled a different number.
This person, unlike Will, picked it up rather quickly.
"Hannibal, we have a problem" was all she said, making the man at the other end of the line go silent; while she proceeded to quickly summarize to him what was going on.
After getting a little more information from Freddie Lounds, Jack dropped Rana at the HQ and left for Hannibal's office.
While the female wanted to come with him, Jack argued. One of his more logical reasons was the fact that he needed Rana to start searching. Someone needed to inform the other agents and start searching, looking for any clues that would indicate where Will went with Abigail.
However, one more selfish reason was that Jack had started to question Rana's professionalism when it came to this case. It was evident from months ago that she had taken a liking to the young girl, empathizing with Abigail due to having common backstories.
Both had passed through a tragedy and both had been orphaned, but under different situations.
Of course, Jack did not also have to bring up the fact that Rana had come rather close to Will as well. She was too quick to take his side and look after him, something that was quite unlike her. Because until Will showed up, Rana did not truly bother bonding or coming closer with any of the other members of Jack's team.
Jack was not sure how much Rana knew about Will and if she was holding back information but he was not going to risk it. He would talk with Hannibal alone since the psychiatrist also seems too willing to defend Will; and let Rana handle other things, for now.
One thing was certain for the human FBI director...things had started to become far more complicated than they used to be and he did not like that.
No one was ready for Will's return, especially Rana and yet she would be the first to eventually reunite with him...under unexpected conditions.
It all started an early morning, perhaps the beginning of the 3rd day ever since Will disappeared with Abigail. Rana had spent endless hours the last 3 searching, using the FBI resources along with Jack and yet they barely got any clue on where Will was and where he had taken Abigail.
The stress was too much for Rana, who chose to sacrifice sleep for answers and that was something Hannibal noticed. Somehow, he managed to persuade her to spend that particular night at his house; after of course, he had made her dinner.
Yet, the little peace she had managed to get that night was disturbed a few hours later by the sound of her phone ringing.
Rana was fast asleep when she first heard the sound of her phone, vibrating due to the incoming call. Her sharp hearing easily picked it up and at first, she thought to ignore it but she knew better than to do that.
With a barely audible groan, she opened her eyes and realized it was early in the morning. The sun was barely up and even she did not wake up that early, let alone know someone that did.
As the phone kept vibrating, she was reminded why she had woken up so early and thus, she started to move her naked body. Hannibal was asleep, his form also lacking any clothing while his one hand was tightly secured around her waist; his chest pressed against her back.
After some faint fight, she managed to free herself enough to stretch across the bed; one hand extended towards the little bedside table that had her phone on.
She could feel Hannibal's fingers trying to resist her freedom and she was not sure how awake he was at that moment but she did not question. Her body was sore and he was not helping with the task.
In the end, she was successful and managed to pick up the phone and place it next to her ear.
"Stones," she said with a groggy voice, rubbing one fist over her right eye while trying to get rid of the sleepiness. A familiar scared and exhausted voice spoke from the other line, making her push her upper body to a standing position; with enough force to actually wake up Hannibal. "Will, where are you now?"
The name of the Beta made Hannibal open both of his eyes and stare at the naked woman sitting by his side. He blinked a few times as his mind processed everything and he slowly pushed his body up as well, while he could faintly hear Will talking in riddles through the phone.
He sounded frantic, and scared and had trouble completing a sentence. Something had taken place and while Rana was trying to calm him and was about to jump off the bed, he had to act surprised and keep the act for what they were about to find.
