The camera panned over to a view over the island, before lowering down until the dock was in view. Chris was standing on it, that huge smile on his face. "Last time, on Total Drama Island, the campers participated in their first challenge of the summer. Some had it easy." It cut away to Bella getting aided by some birds as she made her way to the top of the tree. "Others… not too much." The next scene was Jack getting thrown around by explosives. "We even had a small incident of a missing camper." It cut to Nila looking around for Mindy. "But in the end, after switching the lead a couple of times, it was the Screaming Gophers that came on top when David failed to land in the safe zone. Tensions seemed to rise throughout the Killer Bass." It cut to the scene in the cafeteria of the team arguing with each other. "In the end, the one to go home was Jenna when she angered enough people from her team, making her the first person voted off the island. This time, who will follow up next? And can I one up the previous challenge? Find out today, on Total, Drama, ISLAND!" And then the camera cut away.
Outside
It was currently late at night. The sun wasn't showing any hints of rising up any time soon. Normally, most people would be asleep. Especially after a brutal obstacle course like that. But not for this individual.
Shrouded in shadows, they made their way around the campsite. "Come on, it has to be somewhere…" They mumbled to themselves, eyeing the empty forest. "Where does Chris stay…?" They seemingly had a goal in mind. At the moment, they were moving closer to the Northern part of the island. "There weren't any other islands in the area, which means he has to be stationed somewhere here. Besides, he never left the island." They stopped when they heard some noise in the distance. And it didn't belong to an animal.
"So, we're all good to go for tomorrow's challenge." It was Chris' voice. Peering over the bushes, the figure could also see Chef was there.
"Isn't it too soon for another challenge?" The cook countered. "We've got this place for eight weeks, you can't be mowing through every camper just like that!"
Well, as interesting as that conversation was. The shadowy figure had other things in mind. Slipping through the treeline, they saw their destination. The building that the host and co-host were standing in front of. If their guess was right, that's where all the footage went. Once they were sure the coast was clear, they made a mad dash over to the building, slipping inside. The door was unlocked, after all.
And the best part, no security. Guess Chris never really thought someone would be dumb enough to do this. But here they were, being dumb enough.
Glancing into the various rooms, they finally found one with a rather large monitor. "Bingo." They told themselves as they approached. Sitting down in the chair, they turned on the monitor. To test this whole thing out, they pressed on one of the random videos.
"I pretty much grew up by the ocean, so anything water related is a breeze." Despite Jeremy sounding confident, his facial expression didn't match it. In fact, he seemed rather calm. "Although, I never dealt with rivers…" He hummed in thought.
Ah, the confessionals. They could have looked at all kinds of footage. But this was the gold mine. The thoughts of everyone else. They leaned back in the chair as they considered how to use this. Coming here every so often would get annoying quickly, so they would need to think of something else. Then again… they knew where it was, and with security this weak. There would be no further issues. "Alright, let's see what else we'll find…" They started clicking through the various confessionals.
Screaming Gophers (Guys)
It was a rather peaceful morning. That is, until, a blaring sound could be heard. An alarm was going off, which sent everyone into a panic as they woke up.
Ashton fell off the bunk bed, slamming his face into the ground.
Jack covered his ears, yelling out some obscenities.
Others, like Robin and Xi, didn't move around. Instead, their expression showed off how they were feeling.
The only person to react entirely differently was Cameron, who dropped down from his bed. "Let's go!" He called out, realising it was morning. "Another great day ahead of us!" He declared.
"Turn that alarm off…" Jack clutched his head, still sitting on his bed. "It's too early for this…"
The DM titled his head, confused. "But it's not my alarm. I don't need one. Not when the prospect of morning is enough to wake me up."
"Then… who…" The critic mumbled out before his focus shifted over to the only other person not to react negatively.
"My apologies…" Jared reached out for his phone, turning off his alarm. "This is the time I normally get up at, and I forgot to turn off the alarm."
Ashton quickly shot up from the ground. "What the hell man! This is way too early. What time is it anyways?"
"Seven in the morning." The cadet responded.
The racer's expression quickly softened. "Oh, nevermind. That's a reasonable time."
Jack quickly shook his head. "Don't agree with it so readily." He slowly moved out of bed. "Well, no going back to sleep after something like that."
Cameron didn't seem to care about everyone else's problem. "Well then, let's go to the cafeteria as a team. We won the first challenge, so we never got to have a talk like the other team."
Xi shook his head. "I doubt whatever conversation they had was to deepen any bonds. They were forced to vote someone out."
"Yeah!" Ashton cheered out. "Thanks to me! Remember that."
"I'll try my best to rem- oops." Robin got himself out of bed. "Anyways, I agree with going to the cafeteria. Best to eat early and not have to rush if Chris throws another challenge at us."
Jack was adjusting his clothes. "Why would he throw another one at us? We're here for two months. We're only twenty one campers left. He has to spread this out." When he turned around, he noticed half the team was gone. "I guess my word means nothing here." But he had no reason to not join everyone else.
Screaming Gophers (Girls)
While the girls didn't have a loud alarm to wake them up, it didn't mean that everyone was still sleeping in.
Talia, for one, was already up, and doing her hair. She would go to the bathroom since they had mirrors, but she was confident she could at the very least do her hair without looking at one.
"You're up already?" A voice called out to her. When she looked over, she spotted Eleanor getting out of bed. "And I thought I woke up early."
While she was up, she found it a little too early for any sort of meaningful conversation. She quickly stood up. "I'm going to go do my makeup." She went to leave the room.
"A-ah!" Well, Eleanor didn't want to be left alone while the other girls slept, so naturally, she followed.
The rude girl didn't say anything, up until they finally reached the mirrors. "Why did you follow me?"
"Oh!" Well, she didn't have a reason that would please Talia, so she quickly looked away. "I never really applied makeup to myself. There was no reason to do so, so I thought I would just watch someone else do it."
Letting out a sigh, the rude girl turned towards her, examining her. More so her facial expression. Was she being genuine? Hard to tell. "Alright." She finally agreed, turning towards the mirror. "But I'm not one for small talk."
That worked out fine for Eleanor. She just wanted to see how one would apply it.
Confessional: Eleanor
"You know, Talia gives off this very unaproachable vibe. But she seems to actually be nice." Either she was right, or she was endlessly optimistic. "Maybe the other girls could get along with her too."
While Eleanor had listened to what Talia had said, the rude girl found it rather unnerving nonetheless. Having someone watching her the entire time wasn't something she was used to. Letting out a small sigh, she turned her attention towards her. She was going to say something, but the very happy look Eleanor had on her face caused her to think twice before saying anything. "Did you want to try and wear makeup?" She finally asked, going against her own wishes.
"Oh? Yes. It's something that's interested me for a while, but like I said… no reason to. It would be just a waste of time." The gardener still didn't move from her spot.
It was still pretty early in the morning, so the rude girl figured she had enough time to do her makeup and attempt something with Eleanor. "Alright. I'll try to do something light for you."
"Really? Thank you." The gardener smiled sweetly.
Killer Bass (Guys)
It was much later in the day at this point, and most of the guys had woken up. All but two. Christopher and David were still passed out.
"Should we wake them up…?" Jeremy mumbled out.
Josef stared down at them for a few seconds. "Let them rest. We haven't been given a challenge yet. Although, if these two wind up disappearing…" He trailed off, a threatening tone to his voice. "Alas, that matters not right now." His attention turned towards Matthew.
The movie fanatic was looking intensely out the window. "Yes, the weather today is beautiful. The perfect day for a challenge. I can see it now!"
"God, I hope not." The wannabe host made his way towards the door. "A challenge as soon as we got here wasn't exactly ideal. I'll need a little more than one night of rest to be ready for another one."
Jeremy let out a small laugh. "Come on man, already tired?" He moved over to the window too. "I think I'd be down for a challenge today."
Seems he was out voted in the sentiment. "Alright… However! I wish for it to be later in the day, and not in the morning." Too early for something like this. "I'll be at the cafeteria." He made his way out of the cabin.
Around that time, a groggy voice could be heard. "You three are too loud…" David mumbled out, sliding himself out of bed. "Can't you be quiet?" He let out a yawn as he got out of bed. "Goddamn…" He stretched a bit. "This bed isn't comfortable…"
"Just be happy we got beds." Matthew hummed in thought. "They could have made us go camping."
"Camping?" Christopher shot up out of his bed, fully awake. "I wonder if there will be a challenge like that in the future." He got out of bed quicker than David had. "Anyways, I'll be at the cafeteria."
Jeremy hummed in thought. "There's no reason to not join him, so let's go."
David was annoyed, but he felt like he should at least comply. "Alright, let's go then."
Killer Bass (Girls)
Well, someone had been up for a while, but she had been mindful of everyone else, so she did her best to keep quiet.
Nila was currently doing some exercise like push ups. And she didn't seem to be struggling. Must be a daily routine.
"Um… What are you doing?" Historia called out, a hint of disgust in her voice.
"Oh?" The military trainee stopped what she was doing and stood up. "Well, the first challenge was physical, so I was thinking it would be for the best if I spent some time training." She didn't understand her disgust… until it dawned on her. "Did I wake you up?" She covered her mouth, trying to hold back a gasp. "I am sorry. I tried my best to be quiet."
Historia shook her head. "No, you didn't. Just forget about it." It was probably best to have someone like Nila on the team anyways.
"Don't mind her." Enima called out, resting her arms on the railing of the bunk bed. "I don't think she's worked out a day in her life."
The unbearable scholar let out a small gasp, sounding offended. "So what? I don't have time for that when I'm studying."
The mysterious girl shrugged, before dropping down onto the ground. She took a look around. "You know, I was worried about having to share this room with five other people. Glad that number's down to four."
"You should not be happy we voted someone out." Nila pointed out. "Now we have less people to beat the other team."
Enima didn't really care. She waved her hand dismissively. "I'm sure Chris won't make it so we have a huge disadvantage. We'll be fine." She took a few steps towards the door. "We should get the others awake." Her eyes drifted towards Mindy, who was still asleep, and Bella, who she knew was pretending to be asleep. "Catch you all at breakfast. The usual table." And she was gone.
"Yes, we should get the others up." Nila turned towards Mindy. She took a deep breath, and her normally soft voice grew harsher. "Wake up!" She called out.
This caused Mindy to snap herself out of whatever dream she was having. "Ah- what the hell? I was having a nice dream." She was having a hard time keeping her eyes open. "I'm not a morning person…"
"And I was already up." Bella called out, still not leaving her bed.
Historia shook her head. "Just let them be." She made her way towards the door. "I'm heading out."
Confessional: Nila
A frown was visible. "Seems that most people are still disappointed by our loss last night." She averted her eyes. "Losing is not great, but we still have to try and be optimistic."
Cafeteria
Both teams had gathered in the cafeteria now. Seems everyone was awake.
"Still terrible!" Cameron yelled out as he wolfed down his food. When he was done, he shoved his bowl aside. "Alright, now that's out of the way. Let's talk!" He announced to the team, eyeing everyone around.
"About what, exactly?" Arianna asked, not bothering to look at him.
Oh, someone responded! "I'm glad you asked. See, I was trying to think of ways we could all bond as a team."
"Don't tell me it's that dumb thing you mentioned…" Ashton let out a sigh. "Some of us just aren't interested in those kinds of things."
"Oh…" Jared hummed out. "DnD, was it?"
That caught Marisa's interest. "Oh? You play that?"
"Well, never as a player." Cameron shook his head. "I'm the forever DM!"
Catrina raised an eyebrow. "And that means what in normal terms?"
"He's forever going to be the one running the game." Jack explained. "He's never going to be able to play."
"I see no problem if there's nothing to do the entire day." Xi crossed his arms. "But of course, wouldn't that alienate some people from the team?"
"I don't really care about being alienated." Talia spoke up. "You guys can have fun. It won't affect me."
"So, who's interested!" Cameron called out, failing to read the room in any capacity.
"I'm out." Ashton shook his head.
"Love the enthusiasm!" The eccentric DM pointed at him. "Not what I was asking."
"Yeah, sure." Robin looked over at him. "But are you saying you brought all the stuff you need-" The sound of several dice landing on the table could be heard.
… "Where… Why…" Jack was just confused. "Do you just carry those around everywhere you go?"
Choosing to ignore the critic, Cameron turned to look at a random person. Arianna. "You!" She called out, pointing at her.
She had been briefly caught off guard. But she didn't want to play something like that. "Oh, well, I don't know how to play, and it looks like it would be hard to expl-" A book slammed on the table.
"Is that the entire player's handbook?" Jack mumbled out.
This guy was clearly insane. "Of course it is. I always come prepared."
Confessional: Arianna
"What's this guy's deal? Why's he so desperate for this? Does he not have friends from where he's from so he has to crawl up to us? Honestly, it's pathetic."
Alright, this time, with a less chaotic team.
"So…" Josef hummed down. "As unfortunate as it is. We are down a member now."
"Wouldn't really say it's unfortunate. We got rid of someone worthless." Historia shook her head.
"H-hey!" Nila called out. "You cannot just say that."
Enima shrugged, siding with Historia. "But it's true. Isn't that right, honey?"
The unbearable scholar lifted an eyebrow at the comment.
Confessional: Historia
She seemed slightly annoyed. "That's twice she's called me that. Besides, I'm sure she joined up with me to vote Jenna off. I don't know what her game here is, but I'm not sure I like it."
"I agree with them." Mindy was only half paying attention to the conversation. "She would be no help to other challenges."
"But what if we have a challenge where we need to use our brains." Christopher brought up.
David shrugged. "Well then you'll be useless."
"Oh!"
The unbearable scholar shook her head. "She wasn't the only smart person here. I'm here, and then we also have…" She glanced around the table slowly looking at everyone. Then she took a bite from her food, and prayed the subject changed.
Josef put his head in one of his hands. "Ugh, whatever. From the looks of this place, we won't need to be some science genius to have a fair chance."
Jeremy stroked his chin. "And if we do need someone to be smart, who's to say none of us can't fit the bill. We won't just need to rely on Historia here."
"Anyways…" The conversation was starting to bore David. "So, how about a challenge today? I think the odds are pretty high. From what I've seen of Chris, it would be just like him to not give us a day of rest."
Matthew shook his head. "But that's a lot of things to fit in at once. They have eight weeks to get rid of us." He made a frame with his fingers, facing the door with it. "If Chris walks into this cafeteria to announce the next challenge, strike me down, Zeus."
As soon as he finished saying that, Chris slammed the door open. "Morning campers."
"Forgot about comedic timing." The movie fanatic mumbled out.
Groans could be heard from the entire room.
"What?" The host looked around. "Already tired of seeing me?"
"More like it's too early." Historia shook her head. "Please don't announce a challenge already."
"Hey!" Ashton called out, a smile on his face. "A challenge wouldn't be too bad." A few glares would be sent his way.
"Relaaax." The host tried to reassure everyone. "There won't be an elimination ceremony tonight." No elimination ceremony tonight, no challenge today. That was a fair logical conclusion to make. "Because this challenge will take more than just one day!" Logical if Chris hadn't been involved.
David almost choked on his food. When he could breathe again, he looked over at the host. "How many days are we talking about?"
Chris shrugged. "Depends how good you are at the challenge. Could be two days, could be a week."
"Does being better make it shorter?" Christopher asked.
Historia narrowed her eyes. "Of course it would. Why would it make it longer?"
He thought for a moment. "Well, if it was a last man standing deal, it would make it longer." Excellent point! But nobody would admit that.
"Our challenge. What is it?" Josef inquired.
"I'm getting to it." The host didn't fancy how he was being rushed. "You've all had to run through an obstacle course as individuals through the island. However, that was only a straight line, and this island has many areas to offer. So for your challenge this time. You will be taking a hike around the entire island." He reached over and grabbed four maps. "Each team will be given two maps. As well as…" He pulled out some bags from under the table that nobody had seen for some reason. "Two bags each, with one compass. The bags contain some supplies, so use them wisely." He chucked two bags at each team. Enima and Bella caught them for the Killer Bass, and then Cameron and Jared caught them for the Screaming Gophers.
"Now, to make sure you've actually done the full hike…" He trailed off, as if there weren't any cameras watching them the entire time. "There will be markers along the way with souvenirs you must collect. Failing to present one when you arrive will automatically put your team up for elimination…" He trailed off again. "Well, not exactly. If both teams are missing a marker, then it no longer matters."
Enima would open her map the moment she got it. "Huh, making us go around the entire island. And you said this could take anywhere from a day to a week."
Josef stood up from his seat. "Let's go, team." He declared. They lost the first challenge, and he damn well wasn't going to let them lose the second one.
Forest Entrance
Both teams stood side by side as they waited just on the outskirts of the forest.
"So, Chris." Xi spoke up. "Is there any way to sabotage a team?" This caused some of the campers to raise eyebrows at the statement. "What? It's a fair question."
"There is. If you take another team's marker, they'll be missing it. However, you can only take it from them. You aren't allowed to grab both of them when you reach a new checkpoint." Chris pointed out. "But let's keep sabotaging to just that."
Jeremy was now holding a map. Seems he took it from Bella. "Chris." He called out. "Why are there multiple paths on the maps?" He compared it to the one Enima had. "There's different paths we can take."
"There are multiple paths you can take, but some are easier than others. It's honestly a gamble if the path you take is better."
Jared took an intense look at his map. "Well, we should be able to figure out the best route based solely on terrain." He rolled up the map, placing it in the bag. "Let's set out now, team." He declared.
"Woah!" Chris had to stop him. "I didn't even say go yet…" He trailed off. "Go!" He yelled out as both teams rushed into the forest.
Screaming Gophers
They were the team that had rushed into the forest first, so they had a small lead. And from the looks of it, the Killer Bass didn't make an immediate attempt to catch up.
"We should be good for now." Jared pointed out as his steps slowed down.
Cameron was currently looking through the bag, sorting through everything. "Seems we have some camping equipment if things take more than one day. But I won't allow that to happen!"
Eleanor had a slightly panicked face. "But if we need to rest, it wouldn't do us any good to keep pushing ourselves."
Catrina pulled out her phone, mumbling something under her breath. "I'd rather not spend too much time out here in the woods. The batteries won't last too long."
Marisa seemed slightly annoyed. "I like phones as much as the next person, but that isn't really the priority right now, is it?"
The DJ considered this before shrugging and putting her headphones on. "Music keeps me calm, so let's keep it that way."
"So…" Jack wanted to get the conversation back on track. "What path should we take once we reach the split. I doubt Chris would make the choice easy." He crossed his arms.
"Maybe we should have let the other team go first…" Ashton mumbled out. "That way they could go first and we'd choose whatever path they didn't take."
"How would that affect anything?" Arianna placed a hand on her hip. "We'd still be behind them."
"Exactly." Robin shook his head. "Besides, if we go first, and we keep a good pace. We'll have to force them to potentially take a dangerous path." He picked up a random stick on the ground, digging a small trail in the ground.
"What are you doing?" Eleanor was the first to notice the trail he was drawing.
The tactician shook his head. "Didn't I just tell you? They can't possibly hope to catch up with us if they always take the same path as us." He let out a small laugh. "Unless they want to not stop to rest."
"We're here." Jared finally announced, pulling out the map again. "Should we head left, or right?"
Arianna approached to get a better look at the map. "Left seems like the shorter path."
Xi shook his head. "I say we go right. The shorter path is more tempting, but isn't that just what Chris wants?"
Of course he'd go against her. "But if we're wrong, not only do we have a longer path, we'd have a more difficult one."
He leaned forward slightly. "Well, how about we ask the rest of the team instead of relying solely on your opinion."
He knew exactly how to push her buttons. She turned towards everyone else. "Alright. What do you all think?"
"Longer path!" Ashton answered pretty quickly. "Even if it turns out to be worse, then we'd just have to work harder!"
"Let's go right." Robin stroked his chin a bit. "Seems like it could work out the best for us."
"Yeah!" Cameron called out. "Right is the way to go!"
The general consensus seemed to be to take the longer path, which irked Arianna. "Well, since we voted." She had to put on a fake smile. "Let's just go.."
One by one, the team headed down the right path, with Robin trailing the stick behind him.
Killer Bass
Josef found it better to separate themselves from the other team already. "I'm not about to let them take anything from us." He shook his head. "Besides, we can at least talk amongst ourselves like this."
"Wow, our first full team challenge." Christopher thought for a moment. "Last time we barely got to talk to each other."
"That may be for the better…" Historia shook her head.
Nila jumped into the conversation. "Nonsense." She smiled at the two of them. "Our team could benefit from getting along."
The unbearable scholar looked the other way. "Yeah, but I don't think a hike is the time for that. It's going to be miserable."
"You don't go out much, do you?" Enima passed by her, still reading the map. "Alright, in about ten minutes, we have our first split. And when the paths connect again, we'll have our first marker."
"Aren't we slightly behind the other team?" Jeremy pointed out. "Maybe we should choose whatever path they didn't."
"And if they chose the best path?" Josef pointed out.
The surfer stopped walking, pondering this question. "Then we would just have to be faster." No thoughts behind those eyes.
Bella, on the other hand, was looking through the bag they were given. "We have some food supplies in here…" She commented. "As well as a few sleeping bags, from the look of it." It was a pretty big bag, and she was having some difficulties carrying the entire thing.
"Oh. Let me." Nila moved over and lifted up the bag. "It would be for the best if I were the one carrying it. Do you think so?"
"Y-yeah!" She quickly nodded her head.
While they were walking down the path, David was the first to notice something. "Hey… there's a trail in the ground." He was talking about the one left behind by Robin.
Bella leaned down to look at it. "Seems pretty fresh. I bet it was the other team." Her eyes followed the trail. "Do you think this is the path they took?"
"Why would they mark the path they took?" Historia mumbled out.
"To give us a choice." Jeremy called out as they reached the split in the road. "They're telling us we can either risk our luck and take the path they hadn't chosen. Or, try and catch up with the path they did choose."
Josef's eyes scanned the team. "We aren't exactly as fit as some of the people from the other team, so…" He trailed off. But he didn't just want to take the worst path.
"I say we take the other path." Nila spoke up. "It may be more dangerous, but I am confident we as a team can pull it off."
The wannabe host let out a long sigh. "Very well. But if anything goes wrong, just know you are on thin ice." He pointed his cane towards her. "Alright, let's go, team." He marched his way down the leftmost path.
The path didn't immediately scream anything alarming. It just seemed like a mostly unassuming path. The first one to speak up was Enima, who still had the map in her hands. "Well, this might work out better for us. This path is shorter, so we could definitely cover some extra ground with this."
"But isn't there the chance that this path is more dangerous?" David pointed out. "Sounds like something Chris would do."
"Ugh, we don't need your bad thoughts here." Historia shook her head. "Let's just pray that everything will turn out fine."
"Hmm…" Enima hummed out as the path they were walking down was getting lower. "It's hard to see the region's height based on this shitty map."
"Um…" Bella spoke up. "This area doesn't seem to be in good condition."
Looking at the area, all the large trees seemed to have fallen down, creating a rather difficult terrain to cross.
"Is it too late to go back…?" Mindy mumbled out.
Josef wanted to go back, but it's not like the walk here hadn't wasted some time. "It's fine…" He gripped his cane tightly. "We'll continue. We've already lost enough time as it is." He was the first to make his way over to the field of fallen trees. "We'll just climb over. It's nothing bad." He wasn't the best, but it was still pretty easy to get over the trees. "Now hurry up."
Most people, like Nila, Mindy, Enima, Jeremy, and David had an easy time getting over the trees. But there were the other people.
"I'm not really good at this whole thing." Historia didn't even bother to attempt it.
Bella moved over towards one of the trees. And, despite her size, she actually wasn't too bad at climbing trees. Then again, she had done so yesterday. Once on top, she turned her body around. "Come on Christopher." She reached her hand over, her other one grabbing onto a part of the tree.
The boy moved over and reached over for her hand. "Are you sure you can lift me up?"
"Uh- I would hope you're not just relying on me to fully lift you up." Because the answer would be no.
Oh right! He could help himself up. With the aid of Bella, Christopher was able to get himself some footing to lift himself up.
"That leaves just Historia…" Matthew mumbled out, now standing on top of the tree. Nobody had seen him climb up.
Even she was shocked to see she was the only one left. "Well… Someone help me too. I can't make it up on my own."
But, the person who would extend a hand out was the person she didn't want. "Alright, if you insist." Enima called out, holding her hand out.
She wasn't going to say no, however. Grabbing the mysterious girl's hand, she was pulled up onto the tree.
Jeremy looked around. "Alright, so I guess we can just jump from tree to tree. The rest of this should be easy." To demonstrate, he jumped over to the next tree with ease. "Don't fall behind." He turned to look at the others.
Most people were fine with it, but the same few that had a hard time didn't seem too enthused.
Screaming Gophers
The path may have been longer, but they had nothing standing between them and the first marker.
"Seems like it was an easy path." Xi noted, just to try and get on Arianna's nerves.
"Ah!" Cameron exclaimed, pointing over to something in the distance. "That must be the first marker!" He ran over to it, grabbing the necklace. "Hmm…" He put it around his neck. "Alright, consider it safe." He turned to face everyone else. "Alright, only one has been taken. So the other team is still behind us."
Robin took a glance back towards the path they came. "Well, I don't see them anywhere in the distance, so maybe they took the other path."
"Highly likely." Marisa adjusted her bag. "But this trip still took a good while to get here. We should take a break soon."
"I agree." Jack crossed his arms. "If we're in the lead this early, there's no reason to exert ourselves."
"We should start thinking of the next path." Jared pointed out. "We are approaching another split in the road. And beyond that split, lies the second marker. Although, these splits are much longer. Could see it taking several hours."
Walking up to the center of the group, Catrina pulled out her phone. "It's a few hours past noon." The challenge hadn't started exactly after Chris had announced it, and the campers did have a few hours to prepare. "Well, how about after the second marker, we call a break. It'd be getting close to nightfall."
"And unless the other team sneaks past us, there shouldn't be any issues." Robin pointed out.
Ashton nodded his head. "Yeah, and besides, even if they pass us, that'll mean they haven't had a chance to rest. They'll be exhausted!"
"Works for me." Talia didn't really seem to care. "Let's just keep going."
After several more minutes of walking, they finally reached the second split in the road.
"Both paths seem to be long, and there's no telling which one is longer." Jared turned towards everyone. "Unless someone has a ruler."
Everyone collectively turned to look at Cameron. "Hey! Why would I need a ruler?" More silence. "No. Really. I don't have one."
Talia let out a small sigh before shifting her focus on the map. She held it with Jared. "Then let's just take the leftmost path."
Well, the cadet didn't mind sharing the map with someone. But there were other ways to do it. "You can let go now." He demanded.
She gave him a look before letting go.
"Are you going to keep doing what you were doing?" Eleanor turned to face Robin.
He twirled the stick in his hand a few times, before discarding it to the side. "Hmm… no. I think we're far enough in the lead now. If they choose a bad path, they'll be facing the consequences of their actions." His eyes drifted over towards the side, seeing the type of terrain they were entering. "We'll be fine."
Killer Bass
It would be twenty minutes later when the second team would arrive at the same marker. Josef grabbed the remaining one, gripping it tightly. "Drats. They've already beat us here."
"Duh." Mindy walked past him. "We had to deal with our path. They probably had the easy one."
"What's the marker anyways." Matthew moved over closer to Josef.
"Oh? This?" He opened his hand to reveal the necklace. "Something tacky, honestly."
The movie fanatic reached over and grabbed it, placing it around his neck. "I think it suits my look." He stroked his chin. "Don't you think?"
"I sure wish I couldn't think sometimes." Translation : He hated it. "Let's stop wasting time, already."
Jeremy had taken the map out again. "Well, according to this, the next split isn't too far. The only problem is that both paths seem to be longer than the previous ones. We'll be stuck on whichever one we commit to." He thought a bit more. "But the rightmost one looks the shortest."
"How can you tell?" Nila was now looking at the map. "They both look similar to me."
The surfer shrugged. "Don't worry about it." He rolled the map back up, and placed it in the bag Nila was carrying. Then, his eyes slowly drifted towards the floor. "I don't see it anymore."
"The trail?" Bella mumbled out. She had been looking too, but it seems it has been abandoned.
David shrugged. "We don't need some trail. We already have the path we want to follow in mind, anyways."
"But if we choose the same one as them…" Nila mumbled out. "We will never be able to catch up."
"They're playing mind games with us." Jeremy pointed out before laughing a bit. "Well, it should be fine."
Soon, they approached the split in the road. "Alright…" Josef trailed off. ."We said the right path, is everyone in agreement?"
"We don't have time to worry about a vote." Historia had already started down the path.
She was right, and the wannabe host wasn't going to argue against her. The group began to walk down this path.
For the first several minutes, the path was normal. It seemed like not only the shorter path, but the easier path. "I think we've lucked out." Josef had a rare smile. "We just better hope that the other team got screwed over."
Minutes passed, and soon, they would learn to regret their choice.
"Hmm…" Matthew had stopped walking, putting his fingers in front of him in a frame. "That's what you call a disaster."
The path they had taken had now narrowed down significantly, and the path had risen up, making one wrong step a certain ticket to roll down the hill. Not just that, but the further along the path went, the narrower it got as it closed in on the rocky face next to it.
"God… dammit!" Josef was reasonably frustrated. "Can't we catch a break just once?"
"It is fine!" Nila reassured. "This is still nothing. "We are all rather small." Then her head slowly turned towards Mindy, who stood half a foot above her. "M-most of us!" She corrected herself.
The mischievous girl shook her head. "This is nothing. I'm not one to slip down and fall off something like this."
Jeremy let out a small sad sigh. "It is what it is." He took a step onto the narrow pathway. "Let's just get this over with. If we hurry up, we might be able to catch up to the other team." Despite how small it was, Jeremy didn't seem to be having any difficulties.
One by one, the team made their way down the narrow path.
"This is getting kind of dangerous…" Christopher mumbled out, sandwiched between Enima and Bella.
"Everything will be alright." Nila reassured, following everyone from behind. "Chris would not allow something extremely dangerous to happen."
"I saw a guy explode yesterday." Matthew hummed out.
"O-oh…" Well, so much for that.
"Now isn't the time for idle chit chat." Josef warned everyone. "One false move…"
This got everyone to shut up real quick. The only sound anyone could hear was the surrounding nature, and the sound of them walking.
All was going well, and it seemed like they just might be able to reach the end without any worry.
That was, until someone took a wrong step.
Bella stepped onto a loose piece of the path, and it gave way under her. She let out a scream, and reached over to the nearest person to her, who just happened to be Christopher. Not expecting this, he began to fall with her. He attempted to grab onto the person closest to him, which would have been Enima. Unfortunately, the only thing he managed to grab onto was the bag she was carrying.
Because of the way she was carrying it, it slipped off her shoulder, and the two of them would go plummeting down with the bag.
The entire team froze, watching what just happened. The side was steep, and they were already well out of sight with all the trees around.
The first one to speak up was David. "I'm sure they're fine."
"We have to go after them!" Nila called out, getting ready to drop down.
That was until Mindy grabbed her arm. "Don't be stupid. We can't risk losing more teammates at the moment."
Enima shrugged. "They have a bag, so they should be fine. Mine had the compass, after all." Not to mention the hill wasn't too steep, so they should have just rolled their way down.
Josef was only getting more frustrated by the minute. "Jeremy, show me your map."
Not really worrying about the prospect of falling down, Jeremy swung the bag off his shoulders and opened it. "Here you go." He handed him the map.
Taking a look at it, the wannabe host hummed in thought. "It might just be best if they start making their way to the final marker. We'd waste more time if we stand around here and wait."
It was an awful thing to think. "But what if they are injured!"
"I'm sure McLean has cameras around the entire island." Josef countered. "If something were to happen, he would step in." Time was of the essence. "And if they're fine, that Bella girl seems attuned to nature. I'm sure they'll manage."
Still, it didn't sit right with Nila. But the rest of the team seemed to already have their mind made up. "Alright…" She mumbled out.
Screaming Gophers
On the other hand, the Screaming Gophers had gotten surprisingly lucky, all things considered. They had taken the longer path, but their path was free from any danger.
"You ever feel like your luck is just incredible?" Cameron asked the group.
"Huh… not really…" Eleanor shook her head. "Honestly, I'm surprised we've been getting this lucky."
"It's only a matter of time before it runs out." Talia pointed out.
"Hey!" Jared let out a shout. "Let's try not to jinx this."
"Oh!" Ashton began to run over to a tree. "This is the next marker, right?" He pulled out what appeared to be a tag of some kind. "Neato." He played around with it. "We're halfway done now."
The cadet took a look at the sky. "Although, it's getting rather dark. We should find a place to set up camp. We may not be tired, but who knows what might happen around here at night."
"Yes, I agree." Marisa took a few more steps forward. "We should find ourselves a clearing. Preferably on elevated ground in case it rains."
"But there's not a cloud in the sky." Robin pointed out. "We probably don't have to worry about rain anytime soon."
"Precautions." She pointed out. "It's just in case."
"Let's try and not stray too far away from the path." Jack said. "That way we can easily pack up and go if we need to."
Xi thought for a moment. "Honestly, it would be best if we stay right next to the path. Someone on watch could warn us if the other team passes us. And if they do, it might be best to leave right after."
The entire group came to an agreement. They had resumed walking down the path, trying to find the best spot.
"How about this one?" Arianna suggested.
Jack quickly shook his head. "The terrain is nice, but it's too small."
"Well…" She trailed off, examining the surrounding areas. "And there?"
Taking only but a quick glance at it, he had his answer. "Exact opposite problem. Horrible terrain, but very spacious."
"I don't see you pointing out any places." She pointed out.
The critic gripped the sleeve of his shirt. "Give me a moment, will you?"
"Oh!" Cameron blurted out, stepping off the path. "What about right here?"
All eyes turned towards him. And it wasn't even a bad spot! They even had a small stream to get water.
Adjusting his glasses, Jack gave the entire place a piercing look. "Seems adequate. Let's stay the night."
In a matter of moments, they had both bags opened up, and they had pulled most of the stuff out.
"There doesn't seem to be enough sleeping bags…" Arianna was the first one to notice.
"Guess some of us will just have to share them." Ashton concluded. This got him a few glares his way. "Woah, woah! Not like that! If some of us keep watch, we won't be using the sleeping bags."
"Almost had the entire team turned against you…" Xi shook his head.
"Hold on there, the idea of two people in one sleeping bag is still on the table." Robin pointed out, but he was ignored.
After that, the campsite was looking pretty good. The tent was set up, and some people had already gathered firewood.
Jared was sitting on a rock with a lighter. "Best I handle this."
"We're not going to burn down the forest, you know." Talia pointed out, sitting on a nearby rock.
"It's just a precaution!" He called out. He lit the lighter, and brought it closer to the firepit. Soon, the fire began to come to life. "Here we go. Warmth, everyone."
"How long do we plan on resting?" Jack sat down across from them, his eyes focused on the flames. "We've spent all day walking, so."
"I think ten hours is a good time." Cameron pointed out.
Arianna was sorting through all the food. "Only if the others don't pass us. We don't need to lose the challenge because we got comfy with our lead."
"Ten hours is just too much." Catrina shook her head. "Honestly, three hours is more than enough to rest up and head out."
"That's hardly enough to sleep!" Jared pointed out.
The DJ shrugged. "It's enough for me. I'm sure you guys can operate on less sleep."
"You just want to go back and charge your phone." Xi pointed out.
"H-" Right on the money. "So what? If that just motivates me to win more, what's the big deal?"
"Motivation comes in different methods." Cameron said happily. "Anyways." He was done with that conversation. "We need something to do to kill time."
"I'm out." Talia stood up, already knowing where this was going. "I'll be in the tent."
"Let me guess…" Robin trailed off.
In a matter of moments, Cameron had set up a makeshift table. "Come on! We'll be bored for hours if we don't find something to do."
"This is starting to get annoying…" Xi mumbled out before moving away.
The only people to stay were Marisa, Jack, and Robin.
"Aww, just let him try and start one. I need some entertainment." The journalist tilted her head slightly.
"At best, we'd just do some set up. I doubt we'd have enough time to get into the actual campaign." Jack pointed out. For now, he was just content in making a character.
Arianna hadn't moved over to the tent, but she wasn't going to approach the campfire. Honestly, this seemed just like an alliance ready to form.
"Something troubling you?" Xi was standing behind her.
She dropped the can she had been holding. Which is probably for the best, because had it still been in her hands, she would have thrown it his way. "What do you want?"
"Just testing the waters." A cryptic answer. "You seemed to be deep in thought, that's all."
"Oh, well I was thinking of joining." She lied. "But the group is big enough already."
"Nonsense." The psychologist shook his head. "Why don't you join them? I'm sure they'd like the company."
It's like he knew she was lying. That's a thought that popped in her head. "I'm busy getting the food ready, so I'd rather not."
Xi knelt down, reaching into the bag. "Not much for food. But we could probably find something if we go deeper into the woods." Maybe a place isolated to talk. But that might catch some attention. "So, what exactly is your gameplan here? You can't hide what you feel from me."
What the hell was he trying to do right now? "Gameplan? Why would I need a gameplan? We'll be fine as long as we keep winning."
"I know I turned it down right after bringing up the idea. But an alliance would work in our favour. I feel our methods of operations are quite similar." Despite her outward confusion, he continued.
Almost as if he knew what she was thinking. "I don't think we share the same method."
A small grin slowly formed on his face. "Don't lie to me. I can already tell what kind of person you're really like."
Confessional: Arianna
"Jesus fucking Christ. Does he pester anyone else like this? Or is it just me?" A bit of worry was on her face. "Maybe he really can see through me. But what would the dumb fuck gain from trying to expose me?"
"If it's an alliance, I said I would be fine with it." Her voice had abandoned her softer tone in favour of a harsher one. "But can you stop bothering me?"
Ah, there we go. Finally, she was at least being a little more honest. "See, it wasn't too hard for some honesty." He stood back up. "Now…" He was going to say something else, but someone else approached them.
"Oh, are you getting the stuff for the food ready?" It was Eleanor. "I can help."
Xi took a step back. "By all means, don't let me get in the way."
Arianna sent a subtle glare his way before turning her attention towards Eleanor. "I'd love it if you could help."
Watching the two talking, some gears started turning in his head.
Confessional: Xi
"Well, that's one potential ally. Going to be difficult to keep her close, given she probably wants to eliminate me. However, doing that would be terrible for her game. Besides, from the way she was acting, I'm having similar thoughts. There's a chance an alliance forms based on that DnD group. If so, I have to build up a few more allies." He tilted his head, a far off look in his eyes.
Still with the Screaming Gophers, we were back at the campfire with the four people trying to play a game.
"You can't be a wizard if I chose a wizard." Jack shook his head.
"But it's a fun class. Besides, we'd play them completely differently." Robin pointed out.
This seemed to only frustrate him. "Having two full magic classes would just be unbalanced, and we'd get wiped out completely. Especially if none of us can use healing magic."
"So…" Cameron looked at the two before turning his attention to Marisa. "What are you planning on playing?"
"A rogue." An easy answer, and at least it wasn't a wizard.
"Neat!" Rogue's were always great.
"Tell me…" Back to the arguing. "How would you play it differently?"
"I'd be a melee wizard." Robin answered completely seriously.
"A-" This caught Jack by surprise. "What's a melee wizard?"
Oh, well that was easy to explain. "It's like a wizard… But up close."
This was going to be a long night for Cameron, and that was fine.
Bella and Christopher
Having tumbled down into the trees below, the two of them landed right in some bushes. It would take a moment for any of them to move.
"Uhh…" Bella was the first to get up, clutching her head. When she regained her senses, she began to panic. "Christopher!" She called out.
"Just five more minutes, mom…" He mumbled out, lying in a bush.
A small annoyed expression crept onto her face before she quickly switched to a panicked expression again. "Christopher! This isn't school! This is Total Drama!"
There was a pause, before he mumbled something else out. "Just five more minutes, Chris."
Alright, no more trying to do this politely. She began to shake him until his eyes opened up.
"H-huh?" He quickly called out, looking panicked. "How did we…?"
"We fell." She looked around some more, eventually finding the bag they ripped away from Enima. "But we have some stuff." She opened the bag, and searched around until she found the map and compass. "At least we aren't fully lost."
"But where exactly are we on the map?" Christopher moved over towards it. "And it's not like we'll be able to find the others."
The nature lover shook her head. "We don't need to find them." Now that the map was opened, her finger trailed along the paper until it reached the final marker. "We just need to make sure we get to the last point here."
"Oh?" He didn't really understand why.
She tilted her head to the side. "If we go there, we'll be able to wait around for them. They have to take the long way, but we can cut straight to it. It makes it so we're more likely to reunite." She took a glance at the compass. "Alright, we just have to head East, hanging a little South."
Christopher wasn't the greatest when it came to the outdoors, so he was just going to leave it in the hands of Bella. "Alright! You've got this."
She spent a bit more time looking through the gear. "We don't have a tent, but we do have…" She trailed off. "Five sleeping bags."
"Ah sweet, I get two!" Ignoring the fact that they wouldn't help.
This got an amused laugh out of the nature lover. "Alright, let's go. We can still make good progress as long as we don't stop."
With that, the two set off. They didn't know exactly where their destination was, but they could only hope they'd make it.
Killer Bass
Night had begun, and the team had just made it to the second marker.
"Finally!" David was starting to get annoyed. "Was worried we took a wrong turn somewhere."
Josef reached over, and grabbed onto the marker.
"Now can we have a rest?" Nila asked. "I am sure everyone is getting tired."
"No time to stop. Where's the next one?" The wannabe host turned his attention towards Jeremy.
The surfer pulled out the map. "The third one isn't that far away, but are you sure we want to make the trip?"
"I don't think we should stop until we at least pass the other team. We've already fallen behind enough."
"And lost two of our teammates." Mindy added.
"I say we continue." Matthew jumped in, examining the moon that was starting to make its presence known. "It's a full moon tonight, which means we'll have plenty of light."
Historia let out a sigh. "I'm not sure I can even go on much longer."
"Hop on my back then." Enima suggested. She didn't have a backpack anymore, so she was completely free.
"I… w-what?" The unbearable scholar began to stumble over her own words, trying to piece things together. "Why- why would I-"
Well, she didn't have to. "Have fun walking for the next few hours."
"Wait!" She yelled out, quickly running over to the mysterious painter. "Alright, alright."
Now that most of the talking was done, the team began to march forward through the woods, ignoring the ever dimming light around them.
That is, until they noticed some fire in the distance.
"Stop." Josef ordered everyone. Taking a closer look, this was the Screaming Gophers. "How long have they…?" He could have sworn that they would have been further up ahead.
"Fine. I'll choose a fighter." Robin's voice could be heard.
"Finally!" Jack seemed aggravated.
Jeremy surveyed the area. "We can take a different path to avoid them."
"Yes, probably for the best." Josef stepped away, trying to make sure they weren't visible anymore.
Once a suitable path was found, they snuck by undetected.
"Alright, we passed them. Should we rest soon?" Historia continued to complain.
"Hey, princess." David spoke up. "I think you're the only one who wants to take a break."
"I too, wish to take a break." Nila mumbled out. "If we do not stop soon, I am afraid we will run out of energy, and will be caught in a bad spot."
"Alright!" Josef blurted out in a hush. "Thirty more minutes, and then we rest." The rest of the team seemed to be in agreement to this.
And so forth they marched on, growing weary and tired by the second. Nobody bothered to say anything as doing so would just be a waste of what little energy they had left.
"Alright…" Josef took a deep breath as he eyed his watch. "Thirty minutes. We break here. Hurry up and set up camp."
"Is it even worth setting up camp? We'll just have to take it down after." Enima shook her head.
Jeremy shrugged. "Chris never said anything about bringing the gear back. We could just abandon the tent here."
"Wait… how many sleeping bags do we have?" David realised something. "If Bella and Christopher have the other bag…"
There was a long moment of silence before Nila took the bag off her to check. "Um… Only four." Realising how bad this was, she quickly spoke up. "I do not mind not having one. Sleeping on the ground is fine."
"Fine by me." David shrugged. "Who else doesn't need one?"
Well, Historia wasn't going to let other people claim one. "I call dibs." She quickly said.
There was a long silence as nobody else tried to claim one.
Letting out a sigh, Jeremy spoke up. "Alright, I'm fine not having one. Anybody else?"
"Me." Enima raised her hand up. "Had I held onto the bag earlier, we wouldn't be having this problem."
Nobody else was stepping up to the task, so Josef spoke up. "Then I will be the last one who doesn't have one." He looked around the area before noticing something. "Wait… Where's Mindy?"
Nila panicked as she looked around. "Not again! Why did she run off again?"
This was becoming a trend at this point.
"Down… Three members." The wannabe host's patience was slowly running thin. "Let's just… get everything set up."
With Jeremy and Enima working on the tent, it didn't take very long.
"You've been camping before?" The surfer spoke up.
"Yeah, my dad would always take me to go." She sat down on the floor. "He wanted a son to do stuff with, but guess he got stuck with me."
"Well, he still got to do stuff like that, so I guess it worked out." The surfer stepped away from the tent to check out their handy work. "I think this turned out nice."
"Tent is set up." The mysterious girl turned towards everyone else. "We should make our rest quick."
"Agreed." Josef approached the group, looking around. "Get some rest, everyone. I'll keep watch."
"Ah? Do you want someone to accompany you?" Nila took a step forward.
He was silent at first, looking off into the distance. "... Very well. You may join me."
Screaming Gophers
Night had fully fallen, and most of everyone had gone to bed. The only two people who were up at the moment were Catrina and Jared, who were the first people on watch tonight. Or maybe even the only people on watch. Who knows how long they'd actually stay here.
"Why did you offer to stay up?" The cadet pointed out for his opening statement.
"Hmm?" She took her headphones off her right ear. "Does there really need to be a reason?" She just wanted to listen to some music. "We aren't staying too long, and I fear my phone's going to die before I wake up. Might as well get the most use out of it, right?"
"I… suppose." He didn't understand it, and he wasn't going to try to. "Do you listen to music all the time?"
"Nuh-huh, not while I sleep." And that seemed to be it.
"School?" He raised an eyebrow.
She shrugged. "The teacher stopped telling me no."
Jared shook his head. "It doesn't give you permission to ignore-"
Some rustling in the woods stopped him from speaking, and he found himself frozen. "Did you hear that?"
"Hear what?" She was currently playing on her phone, adjusting some stuff. "Ah man, it's going to die soon. How much battery does music even take up?"
Having a bad feeling, he stood up from the stump. "I'm going to go investigate." It was a bad decision, but he knew if he didn't figure out what it was soon, it could end badly for all of the team.
However, once he finally reached the area where the rustling was coming from, he would regret his decision right away. "B… B… B…" His voice got caught up in his throat as he took a step back.
"What the hell?" Catrina called out, hopefully reacting to what Jared had seen- "It was only at 10%! This shit sucks!"
She would be no help, as Jared found himself face to face with a bear. As the fluffy creature slowly began to march its way over to him, he had no choice but to back up. "Catrina!" He called out.
"What? Can't you see I'm busy?" She was trying to tap her phone, but it wasn't responding.
Jared never really knew what to do when faced with a bear. He wasn't exactly a camper, or anything like that. "Alert the others!" He ordered.
"Jared! I don't think they'll care!" Still not paying attention.
"Help me! Goddammit!" He yelled out, hoping to snap her out of her phone trance.
However, he hadn't expected a phone to fly past his head and hit the bear square in the face, causing the poor animal to run off in pain.
The cadet released a sigh of relief. "Thank you for the help…"
"Dammit… I missed…" She reached out and picked up her phone.
"Missed…?" He brought his hand to his chin. "Weren't you aiming for the bear?"
Now she just seemed confused. "What bear?"
Was she aiming… for him? "Nevermind…"
Screaming Gophers (Inside Tent)
All the campers who weren't on watch were currently snoozing in the tent, peacefully. They had already gotten so far with just one day. They deserved all the rest they could get.
Ashton, on the other hand, had been snoring decently loud. How anyone else fell asleep was a mystery. In his hands, was the marker.
Soon, the flap of the tent would open up, and someone would be staring down at him. The faint glint of the tag gave it away. Taking a quick glance around the room to make sure nobody had seen them, they grabbed the tag. And as quickly as they arrived, they were gone.
"H-huh?" Ashton sat up, having felt a weird presence. When he saw that nobody else was there, he shook his head, running a hand through his hair. "Just a dream… or something…" He lied back down, slowly closing his eyes.
Killer Bass
The two who had volunteered to be the first (and possibly only) watch were Nila and Josef. The wannabe host stared deeply into the fire in front of him.
On the other hand, Nila spent a few seconds looking at him. "... Why did you offer your sleeping bag?"
At first, he didn't answer. He just kept staring at the fire. Finally, he spoke up. "I didn't need it. Not if I'm just going to stand watch. Besides, we'll probably go the moment day breaks. And that should be soon, so no need to recuperate."
Well, she knew she would be fine with it. Wouldn't be the first time she pulled an all nighter. But Josef didn't really seem like someone who should. "No… Really. You should get some rest before we head off. If you collapse during the challenge, we might lose."
He shook his head. "And if that happens, someone would simply have to carry me." But that came with its own set of problems. "You would probably be capable, you seem decently strong."
"Huh? Me?" It was true. "No. I do not believe I could do that." Her eyes glanced the other way.
Tapping his cane on the ground, Josef hummed in thought. "David might be able to. He seems decently athletic."
That was still ignoring the core issue. "We have to assume that the other team is confident in their ability to beat us. We can probably afford a little extra time to rest." Sure, she wanted to win. But she wanted to make sure her team was in a condition to win. "If you do not go to sleep in an hour. I will knock you out."
The wannabe host spent a few more seconds staring into the fire before he looked over at her. "Hey. At least this way the rest of the team will fully be rested. Besides, I wouldn't be able to sleep out here in the woods anyways. I would be too worried about everything." He used his cane to poke some of the wood in the fire to move them around. The flame grew in intensity as the flare from it reflected off his sunglasses. "And we don't have to worry about losing." They were in the lead. And they would keep it that way. "Let's just make sure nothing happens tonight."
Nila frowned slightly, but she didn't say anything else.
Bella and Christopher
They had less distance to travel, so they figured they could set up camp earlier than they needed to.
Christopher was setting up the sleeping bags, while Bella was reading over the map. "According to this.." She mumbled out, looking at the small clearing they found themselves in. "We should be here…" She tapped at the map.
A few seconds later, the boy moved over to get a better look. "Oh, then we don't have to travel too far, right?"
That wasn't the exact issue. "We might not have to travel far, but our destination is elevated, so there's a chance that it's more time consuming." Seeing that the bags were ready, she plopped herself down. "And sleeping in nature is peaceful, so I might end up sleeping in a little."
Well, that didn't matter! They were close to the end, so they should be able to make it before their team does. Letting himself fall down on the sleeping bag full force, he looked up at the stars. "Ah! They're so pretty at night. Living in the city, you don't get to see them that often."
"That's a shame." She wasn't going to pay attention to them, but since he had pointed them out, they were very obvious. "I see them all the time where I'm from. I don't live in a big city, so." But even so… being so far away from any civilization, one could see truly how much light pollution there was. Each star was vibrant in the sky, and one could make out constellations so easily.
"Oh! There's the big dipper!" Christopher pointed out towards the sky.
The nature lover looked over to where he was pointing, before squinting her eyes. "That's… that's not the big dipper." She looked around the sky. "That one is."
"Oh! Yeah. That looks more like a dipper than what I thought it was." He felt a little sheepish.
They could have spent the entire night stargazing, but she knew better than that. "We should stop. Maybe on a night where we don't have a challenge, we could do this."
That was disappointing to hear, but he understood why. "Alright!" He got into his sleeping bag, as opposed to just lying down on it like he had been. "As soon as sunlight hits us, we're off!"
She looked at him for a few seconds. "Yes, as soon as daylight hits." She turned on her side to face away from him. It didn't take too long for her to fall asleep, whisked away by the gentle outdoor breeze.
Killer Bass
Sunlight had made itself apparent, and the first to make any sort of move was Nila, who had to shake Josef awake. "Hey. The sun is out."
He made a weird sound as he took in some air. "H-huh?" He had no idea when he had fallen asleep. "Then what are you waiting for? Let's set out."
"Ah! But what about the camping equipment?" The trainee said.
It wasn't in the rules. "Forget about it." He opened the tent up. "Hey! Everyone!" He called out. Although, he was thrown off guard a bit. There had been one extra person there. "Mindy?"
Her eyes blinked open as she slowly leaned her body up. "What…? Can't you see I'm sleeping?"
"Where have you been?" He pointed his cane at her.
She stared at him for a few seconds before a smile crept itself onto her face. "Does it really matter? I'm here now?" She stood up fully. "Still feel tired, but let's go."
The rest of the campers were quick to wake up, mostly because Josef shook them awake one at a time. "We don't have time to waste." He called out.
Once everyone was ready, he turned to look at Jeremy. "Map, boy."
He took a glance at the map. "We just have to make it past this split, and we get the final marker. Then it's just a beeline to the end."
"And we are still ahead." Nila pointed out. "I did not hear anyone pass by."
Mindy rolled her eyes. "They're sleeping like babies. Besides… I wouldn't worry about their chances of winning."
Historia raised an eyebrow. "And why's that?"
Brushing it off, the mischievous artist took a few steps forward. "Let's not worry about that right now. Let's go."
"Woah…" Matthew could be heard mumbling out. "So realistic."
"Tsk, what is?" Josef turned to look at him, but he froze.
In front of the movie fanatic was a bear. In fact, it was the same bear that approached the Screaming Gophers last night. "I must tell Chris I'm impressed by the special effects."
Everyone else froze in their tracks when they saw it.
"Huh… Huh…" Historia spoke up. "I think that's real."
Matthew shook his head. "Nonsense. If it was real, we would have been in danger. And since this is a TV show, we wouldn't be-" The bear swiped at his chest, ripping off part of his shirt, and anything around his neck. "Hmm…" He had to take time to process this. "Feels real." Turning towards the others he began to run.
Nila was ready to wrestle this bear, but given that the rest of her team had already left, and they had the map, she found it wise to follow suit. "This is not over!" She called out to the animal as she ran off.
Once the group had reached a safe distance, they all slowed down to catch their breath. "Dammit…" Josef mumbled out. "A bear…? Really, McLean?" He was starting to feel his fatigue catch up to him. "Press on… we must." He stood up straight.
"Is everyone alright?" Nila looked around, concerned.
Matthew was the only one who needed to speak up. "I was fine. The bear merely snatched part of my shirt. I have a spare costume in the cabin." He made a frame with his fingers, closing one of his eyes. "We should focus on the challenge ahead."
Taking a deep breath, the wannabe host nodded his head. "Yes."
However, the group didn't make it very far until they all stopped. Jeremy was looking at their next choice. "We've reached the fork in the road? Should we-"
"Right." Mindy was the first to call out. "That's the way I'm going."
Pointless to argue, they all went along with her. "Why this way?" Historia placed a hand on her hip.
"Just felt like the best one." The artist shrugged.
Confessional: Mindy
"Truth be told, I went up ahead last night to check on the split path. The other one… isn't as great. Sure, the one we are going down is longer, but it shouldn't matter. It's better than struggling."
The journey was long, but without peril. And while exhaustion was catching up to most of them, they eventually found themselves at the last marker area. Except… It was empty.
"What?" Historia marched her way over to it. "There's no marker at all?" But… she did notice a small note attached to the pole. "Marker #3…" She began to read in silence after that. "The last marker is that our entire team needs to make it to the finish line."
"Great!" Josef almost threw his cane on the floor. "Just our luck."
"Hey!" Nila called out, shaking her head. "We have to believe that the two of them are on their way to the end."
"Yes." Matthew hummed in thought. "I can just think of it now. The duo is tirelessly racing their way to the finish line, hoping that they can arrive just in time to help their team." He closed one of his eyes. "That's the truth behind what's happening."
Bella and Christopher
Yeah they were still sleeping.
Killer Bass
"If they don't make it…" Josef began to ponder. "We have to hope that something happened to the rest of their team."
"Wow, pretty dark thought, there." David pointed out. "You know, I heard there were bears in the area. Maybe they got eaten." A hit in the back of the head.
"Do not joke about something like that!" Nila began to panic. "They might be from the other team, but…"
Rubbing the back of his head, he took a step back. "Calm down, I wasn't serious." God, she could hit hard. Guess he just had to know his audience. "How far… Jeremy?"
Taking another look at the map. "Maybe just another hour or two. We made it pretty far last night." It was a rough estimate based solely on the fact he didn't know how to read a map.
Choosing to take his words with a grain of salt, Josef marched on. "Victory awaits us!"
Screaming Gophers
While they were a little late in waking up compared to the others, Jared's alarm helped get everyone up with ease.
"See! I knew this thing would be useful!" He pointed out.
Jack could only grunt in annoyance. "Whatever. I still want that thing turned off."
"Now's not really the time to be arguing." Talia shook her head as she made her way back onto the path.
"Ah!" Eleanor called out. "Wait! What about the tents?"
Jared was standing by her side. "Yeah! We can't just leave that all here."
"We aren't being graded on our ability to bring back equipment." Xi shook his head. "We are being graded on how fast we can go." His eyes drifted over towards the trail. "Did anyone pass by last night?"
"No sir. I was on guard for most of it, and nothing of note happened!" Well, except the bear, but he didn't feel like bringing that up.
"Then, we're still in the lead." The psychologist stepped back onto the trail. "Let's not lose the lead."
Someone else knew better, though. Robin glanced at the path, turning his attention to the way they came. "Isn't it strange, though? You'd think they would pass by here." He took a few steps off the path. "Don't bother waiting for me. Just go on ahead."
Confessional: Robin
"There's no way they didn't pass us. They would have kept going until they overtook us. Am I worried? Not really. To pass us, they would have to have kept going through the night. And, to make it worth anything, they would have to wake up early in the morning. They'll be tired."
It took about half an hour of marching before something of interest popped up.
"What…?" Jared mumbled out, seeing something he hadn't expected. Another campsite. "They… passed us?"
"You said that you saw nobody!" Jack called out. "And yet here we are, looking at their empty camp."
Eleanor stood between the two of them, trying to stop a fight from happening. "Then maybe they took a different path to get here?"
"They went off the path?!" Ashton exclaimed. "That has to be cheating!"
Marisa tilted her head to the side. "There weren't any rules against that."
The racer blinked a few times. "So we could just run to the end?"
"We still need the last marker, don't you remember?" The critic pointed out. "As much as I'd love to do that."
"Then what are we waiting for?" Growing impatient, Arianna continued down the path. "We're just wasting time here."
Robin let out a small laugh. "Don't worry. We'll be able to catch up. I'm sure of it."
"Is everyone well rested?" Jared turned to look at everyone. "I think we should make a run for it!"
Cameron flashed a thumbs up. "Well rested! But isn't running the worst thing we could do? Imagine the levels of exhaustion we would get."
"We can do a light jog." Marisa called out from in front of the group.
Jared thought for a moment. Running the entire rest of the race wouldn't be an issue for him. "Fine. I yield."
It wouldn't take long for them to reach the next marker at the speed they were going.
Talia was the one to pick up the piece of paper. After silently reading it over for a few seconds, she eyed her entire team. "Yeah, that's everyone. Let's go."
"What was the marker?" Jack crossed his arms.
"We just need to get our entire team there. That's it."
Ashton then counted everyone himself. "Hey! We're all here!"
"Maybe some freak accident happened to the other team." Robin hummed in thought, which got him a few looks. "Just a thought."
"I would hope nothing happened…" Jared shook his head. "They may be our opposition, but it'd be no way to win." Still, the possibility did exist. "Alright, back on track, everyone."
Bella and Christopher
"Christopher!" A voice called out into the darkness. "Christopher! Christopher!"
The boy would suddenly wake up in a jolt, looking around. "H-huh? What?"
Bella was on her knees, beside him. "How many times am I going to have to wake you up? We have to go. We overslept?"
Hearing that, he took a glance at his wrist, which had no watch. "We're going to be late!" He quickly got out of his sleeping bag. "Which way to the finish?"
She had been so panicked in waking him up, that she forgot that part. "Um!" She quickly reached over for the map and compass. After spending a few seconds looking at it, she pointed off to the distance. "That way!"
Peering towards the sun, which had already made itself well over the treeline, Christopher spoke up. "Do you think we'll make it in time?"
"I… Don't know." On one hand, they could make it before their team, on the other hand… It might not even matter. "As long as we make it back before the Screaming Gophers, everything will work out."
"Hmm…. Yeah! It will. I know everything will work out." They left the field behind them as they entered the forest.
Killer Bass
Fatigue had begun to creep its way to them, and Josef found himself moving sluggishly with each new step.
"Hey." David had taken notice of this. "Don't collapse on us."
"We're almost to the end." Jeremy called out, holding the map sideways. He rolled it up and put it away in his bag.
Nila moved over to be at Josef's side. "I told you you would get tired."
"How are you not…" He mumbled out, almost tripping on his own feet. Thankfully, she managed to catch him.
"Should we take another break?" Historia called out, less for his sake, and more for hers.
Matthew shook his head. "The finish is within reach. Unless you want a picture finish, I advise against waiting. We've managed to gain ground on the other team."
"What does it matter?" The unbearable scholar narrowed her eyes. "We've already missed a marker. We're going to lose."
Mindy let out a small sigh. "Let's not worry about the marker right now."
"Yeah, maybe some freak accident happened to the other team." David shrugged, voicing almost the same thought that Robin had, which got him a few looks. "What, it would be beneficial."
"That is not something we should be wishing for…" Nila shook her head.
Having pulled out the map again, Jeremy examined it. "I'd say we just have five more minutes and we're at the finish line. Why take a break now?"
"Ugh, fine." Historia rolled her eyes. "But if we end up losing anyways, I won't let you forget it."
While the pace had certainly slowed down, they were still making ground. And the benefit of not seeing the other team meant they could play it safe.
"Hey." Jeremy called out, stopping on the small hill. "I see the entrance of the forest from here."
Stopping momentarily, the group looked at each other before picking up the pace.
As soon as they were out of the clearing, they saw Chris waiting for them, sitting on a chair.
Once he spotted them, he lowered the magazine he was reading. "Muck quicker than I anticipated."
So close… yet. "Wait!" Josef called out. "If we cross the finish line, do we lose out on the third marker? Or can the rest of our team arrive?"
The host thought for a moment. "The moment you cross the finish line, you can't gain any new markers."
Hearing that, the wannabe host took a few steps back. "It's risky, but we wait." He jabbed his cane into the soil.
"This seems like it'll be a photo finish after all…" Matthew hummed to himself.
Enima scanned the woods. "I don't see them at all. If the other team shows up, we cross the finish line, no questions asked."
While they might not have been able to see the other team, Nila would be able to hear them. "I think they're getting closer." Seems that even with their lead, it meant nothing if they were tired.
"Hey!" Ashton called out, coming out of the clearing. "We made it!"
"But the other team is here already." Jack pointed out, shaking his head.
Taking a look around, Marisa spoke up next. "But they haven't crossed the finish line. They're waiting for their last two members."
"Last two? But aren't they missing three? They're only eight." The racer pointed out.
"They voted someone off already." Arianna shook her head.
"... Oh right."
Not wanting to give the other team a chance to cross, Jared began sprinting down towards the finish, which caused the rest of the team to follow suit.
Back with the Killer Bass, Mindy let out a sigh. "I'm crossing the finish line. Everything will work out." And before anyone had the chance to react, she placed a foot over the line.
"Dammit…" Josef knew that was their only choice. Bella and Christopher wouldn't make it in time. They're only hope was that the other team missed a marker. But they could have only missed the last one, which they clearly hadn't. Still, he put his foot over the finish line, as the rest of the team followed.
"First to cross is the Killer Bass!" Chris called out before the Screaming Gophers made it through. "But, judging from their lack of teammates, it doesn't really matter unless you've missed a marker."
Cameron removed the necklace around him. "We've got this, team!" He handed it over to Chris. "Now, for the tag."
There was a moment of silence before Ashton spoke up. "Oh right! I had that!" He reached into his pocket. "Huh…" Other pocket. "Hmm…" Third pocket. "No…" Fourth and fifth pock-
"Why do you have so many pockets?" Jack crossed his arms.
His face grew pale as he looked at the rest of the team. "It's not… there…" He admitted.
"What." Arianna slowly turned to look at him.
Confessional: Arianna
"Are you fucking kidding me? We're going to lose this challenge because of this dumbass? Couldn't hold onto a single tag? Whatever. He was useless anyways." She waved her hand dismissively.
"They… don't have it…?" Historia mumbled out.
A small giggle came from Mindy. "Are you missing this?" She twirled the tag in her hand.
Josef reached into his pocket and pulled out his own tag. "What?"
The mischievous artist winked at the other team. "I doubled back after seeing your team camping. I figured taking one of your markers would be an assurance for us."
Now filled with hope, Josef turned towards Chris. "Our tag." Next, the necklace. "Who had the second one?"
Jeremy thought for a moment. "Wasn't it Matthew?"
The movie fanatic nodded his head. "Yes, I thought it was cool, so I nabbed it for myself." He reached over towards the neck to grasp onto it. "Hmm…" He tried to grab it again. Finally, he opened his eyes, and looked down. "It appears to be missing." He made a picture frame with his fingers, turning towards the other team. "Perhaps it was a reverse plot twist, and they stole it from us."
"We ain't do shit." Catrina put her hands on her hip.
"Please speak proper english." Jared shook his head. "Besides, I don't like being accused of thievery. We never once saw your team until now."
Thinking back, Matthew slowly nodded. "Then, it must have been when I fought that bear. It was a triumphant battl-"
"You got your assed kicked…" David shook his head.
Slowly realising what this meant, Josef fell to his knees. "So even after all that… We lost?"
"If you only have one of the three markers, then that automatically makes the winner the Screaming Gophers!" Chris called out.
"Yeah! We won!" Ashton cheered.
Jack shook his head. "No thanks to you."
At that moment, two more people came running, almost out of breath.
"Did… did we lose?" Bella looked up at everyone else once she had caught her breath. Nobody responded.
"Did we win?" Christopher asked, being unable to read the room.
"Killer Bass, once again, I'll be seeing you at the campfire ceremony tonight."
Elimination Ceremony
The team of ten sat on the stumps around the campfire, silent. Twice they had been here, after coming so close to winning the challenge again. Were they just unlucky? Or did their team just suck?
Chris hadn't shown up yet, so it was just the campers on their own.
"So." David opened up the conversation. "Who did everyone vote for?"
"You can't just ask that-" Nila began to say.
"Bella." Jeremy said without hesitation.
"M-me?" Her face paled a bit. "W-why?"
The surfer thought for a moment. "She was the first alphabetically."
"That… what?" Historia was baffled.
Before anything else could be said, Chris would walk up to his usual spot. With him, he had a plate with nine marshmallows. "Killer Bass. It's a shame to see you all here again." He lied. "This isn't a strong start to the competition. Eventually, the number disadvantage will come to bite you back."
"W-well…" Nila spoke up. "We cannot give up."
"You lost a few members of your team at the start of the challenge, which ended up costing you the challenge in the end." Chris pointed out.
Bella looked away, trying to avoid everyone's gaze.
"Hey!" Christopher spoke up. "It's your fault for making us go onto dangerous roads."
"You could have turned back at any moment, but you pressed on." The host pointed out.
Clenching his fist, the wannabe host looked over at him. "We would have wasted time going back, which might have led to the other team making it first."
Well, Chris didn't want to be proven wrong, so time to continue with the ceremony. "When I call your name, you are safe. The camper who doesn't receive a marshmallow is eliminated from Total Drama, and can never return. Ever. The first marshmallow of the night goes to… Nila." He tossed her the first one.
She caught it without issue. Twice she was safe first.
"The next one goes to… Jeremy."
He didn't bother catching it, and let it sail past him.
"The third one goes…" Wow, so little choices now. "Enima. And also Historia."
They both caught their marshmallows.
"Next up…" He looked around, before tossing the next one. "David."
He didn't bother catching it with his hand, and instead opened up his mouth.
There were only four marshmallows left on the plate, but five campers. "Bella, Christopher, Josef, Matthew, and Mindy. You have all not received a marshmallow. For whatever reason, some of you have accumulated votes this ceremony. Bella, you were one of the people who got split from the group, and ended up causing the team to lose. Christopher, you are in the same group as her. Josef, you are seemingly viewed as the team leader, and your method of leading might be a little more on the extreme side."
"So what? Someone has to be in charge."
"Matthew, you were one of the people who lost a marker, which also caused your team to lose. And finally, Mindy." He paused, trying to think of something. "I don't know why you caught a vote." And with that, he tossed her a marshmallow.
She had gotten one? Interesting.
"The next one goes to…" He weighed his choices, before turning towards his next target. "Josef."
"Good." He crossed his arms after catching it.
Two left, and three people. "This one goes to… Christopher." He threw it at him.
He scrambled to catch it. "Hey! I'm safe-" He turned to look at Bella, before realising this was a bad time.
"Bella, Matthew. There is only one marshmallow on my plate tonight. One of you is going home. One of your journeys will end tonight." He picked up the last marshmallow. "Both of you caused the team to miss a marker, which is why people voted for you. But your team decided that one of you caused the team to lose more than the other. The last marshmallow of the night GOES TO…"

"Bella." He threw the last one at her.
She failed to catch it, as she had not been expecting it. "I'm… safe?"
"Yeah!" Christopher cheered.
Slowly, Matthew stood up, dusting himself. "I guess this wouldn't be my big breakthrough to television." He made a frame out of his fingers. "Oh well, I guess it's my fault for losing to that bear. Had this been a different TV show, I'm sure I would have won."
"Dude, you can't fight a bear." David shook his head. Normally he'd at least humour this sort of thing, but not tonight.
Thinking for a moment, the movie fanatic turned towards the campers. "Seems I didn't have plot armour. Or any armour for that sense. I'm sorry for being the reason we lost today, may this team know nothing but victory after this. A true underdog story-" He was lifted up by Chef and slowly carried away from everyone.
"Oh thank fuck." Historia blurted out. "He was starting to annoy me."
Dock of Shame
Dropping him effortlessly into the boat, Chef got into the small cabin.
Sitting on the bench on the outside, tilting his head to look up at the moon. "A beautiful night for an ending, it would seem. Picture perfect as always. And with every great movie, comes a sequel of equal, or greater proportion." He paused for a moment. "Wait… no. The sequels are rarely better in terms of movies… Am I doomed for failure-" The sound of the boat would drown him out.
Standing back on the dock, Chris took a sigh of relief. "And with that, that concludes our second elimination. With two campers out of the way, we are down to twenty. And the Screaming Gophers have a commanding lead over the Killer Bass. Will this streak continue, or will the Bass finally get their well deserved victory? Find out next time, on Total! Drama! ISLAND!" And the camera cut off.

Voting Confessionals
Bella
"Um… As much as I hate to vote someone off again, I think I might be at risk of elimination." She looked away from the camera. "But I would feel bad, since I have to vote off who I think might get votes. So my vote is for Matthew. I didn't tell Christopher this… So if I get more votes, it's fine."
Christopher
"Normally Bella would tell me who to vote for." He says, as if it happened more than once. "So I guess I'll just vote for the same person as last time. My vote goes to Josef!"
David
"Hmm…" He leaned back lazily. "I guess I could vote for someone for Matthew, or I could vote for someone I absolutely don't trust. That's right, I'm casting my vote towards Mindy. Maybe I'll even spook her a little."
Enima
"Another easy vote. Only three people caused us to lose, and two of them weren't directly at fault. We can't really control nature." She shrugged. "Besides, I see more merit in keeping Bella around, so my vote goes towards Matthew."
Historia
Placing her hands on her hips, she seemed ticked off. "What the hell was he thinking getting close to that bear? Did he think it wasn't real? Either way, had he not been stupid, we would have won. At least what happened to Bella and Christopher was an accident. Matthew just has no excuse."
Jeremy
"I think our team started to go downhill after Bella and Christopher fell off the cliff…" He hummed in thought, stroking his chin. "Sure, Matthew lost us the bracelet, but had the two been more careful, then we would have won, and not have to ask hastily. So my vote goes towards Bella."
Josef
"As much as it would be easy to vote for Bella and Christopher, I don't think I can. Accidents happen, but what happened to Matthew was because of his own incompetence. While the former two are a potential voting block, they each have their own uses. Matthew hasn't really done anything for us, at least not that I can remember seeing. So it's an easy choice in the end."
Matthew
"Well, seeing as I'm potentially up for elimination, I have to go for someone else who might have caused our team to lose. And, as much as it pains me to vote for an underdog like her, I have to cast my vote towards Miss Bella. As useful as she'd be, she seems a little too clumsy for challenges like this. Who knows when that could cost us the next episode…"
Mindy
"Matthew completely invalidated my work, so I could cast my vote towards him. But I don't feel like it. I can enjoy his movie talk. And Bella is a nature girl, which means she's very valuable on an island like this. As for Christopher…" She trailed off, looking away. "Had he been the only one to fall, I'm sure we would never have seen him again. Besides, the kid doesn't look the brightest."
Nila
"I am glad that Bella and Christopher were safe. However, we do have to vote someone out. As much as I do not want to, I think I will cast my vote towards Matthew for engaging with the wilderness so recklessly. If he had seen a bear, I would have been more than willing to take care of it. But because of my slowness to act, we lost the necklace… I will find that bear, and I will win against it."
