Yamamoto walked through the forest in the direction of his objective. He was walking at a sedate pace and had many things on his mind.
These things were, 'Where the hell am I?' and 'should I fly up to recon my surroundings, but risk getting discovered by whatever powers are here?'
'No, that'd be foolish without first having some type of information about this "new world" I'm in' he reasoned to himself silently inside his own mind as he continued on his way. He had many such thoughts about what he should or shouldn't do.
3,000 years stationing himself in the soul society had not exactly prepared him for recon of new worlds.
One thing really bugging him as he travelled along and he could not get out of his mind was, 'why the hell is my arm missing?!' he grumbled silently.
'I know for a fact that resurrection is impossible and the way my bankai was returned to me is a mystery, yet even after achieving all that they couldn't give me my arm back?' he tried to think up any explanations as to why his arm was still missing, but he was stumped.
'Maybe this so-called system isn't as strong as I thought' and right as that thought hit him the blue bastard decided to show itself.
Reading through it Yamamoto felt his temper rising.
[Notice: Arm remained the same because the system decided you looked much cooler without]
'This blue menace decided that rather than give me my arm back it should stay gone, BECAUSE IT LOOKED BETTER?!?!' Yamamoto fumed within his mind.
He felt that in 3,000 years, never had his patience been tested this much.
Suddenly he turned and looked sharply to his left. Something was coming. He was trying to sense it, but it was odd almost like it wasn't there. If his ability to sense spiritual pressure was a blanket, then this thing was like a moving hole in that blanket.
Yamamoto readied himself for combat adjusting his stance as he heard the sounds of underbrush breaking closer and closer to him.
When the void he sensed finally broke out from the forest and into his line of sight he became confused.
'A hollow?' He asked himself as he looked upon the thing.
It certainly looked like one. It was a pitch black wolf-man creature with a white mask resembling a wolf skull with red marking upon it. It had wolf-like legs and a tail with a human looking torso and arms as its top half. It had spikes jutting out of its back centered on its spine, more spikes jutting out at the shoulders, forearms, knees, and every claw-like appendage ending in a sharp spike of the same white material. Yamamoto would say bone, but his senses were telling him this thing was very far from alive and even further from organic.
"Snrrrrrgh" It snarled at him and he noticed it didn't have the echo most hollows did either.
His musings were cut off as the thing stopped snarling and leapt towards him.
'Slow' Yamamoto thought to himself as it sailed very slowly through the air towards him. It had caught him off guard earlier because of his inability to sense it reminding him of what that Kurosaki brat had reported once the winter war was finished. Transcendentals cannot be sensed by souls who have not yet reached that same level of strength.
Whatever this thing was, just judging it from its speed, it was nowhere near even being capable of even dreaming to be at that level. Yamamoto quickly side-stepped the beast and positioned himself right next to it.
The fight was over. The beastly thing just didn't know it yet, as it sailed through the air oh ever so slowly, unaware of its fate. Maybe that was for the best, for the beast to die not knowing it has tried to hunt a target far above its own position.
'Now to test your durability' Yamamoto thought as he prepared his stance and punched.
*BOOM*
...Needless to say it was nowhere near as durable as he thought it might be.
'Perhaps I may have overdone it a little bit' He thought to himself.
The gaping hole in the direction of his punch, barren of any vegetation in the middle of the forest, would certainly agree with him that he overdid it.
That small encounter allowed him to reach a conclusion.
'Well if that's the level of power around here, I supposed I could be a bit more liberal with the use of my abilities'
With a quick reorientation of himself using his Objective ability. Yamamoto disappeared from sight in a flash step, leaving behind a forest cowed and silent.
Well not completely silent, there's still a few trees and branches snapping as they settle thanks to his destruction.
(AN: Why in the god damn fuck does Jaune Arcs family and birthplace not exist?! Fuck it we ball)
With one last flash step Yamamoto stopped on a cliff with a pretty good outlook over the town ahead of him. It was quite small, at least by the standards of the humans he was used to. It had nowhere near as many buildings and nowhere near as many people.
The town itself was surrounded by crop fields, after which there was a wall that encompasses the entire town. The surroundings are flat and forested, apart from a few dirt paths and hills here and there. Far away from the town it got rockier and the terrain became rougher, much like the cliff Yamamoto was at surveying the town.
There were also a few buildings outside the safety of the walls, and one particular building was on top of a small hill near the town walls almost as though they were looking over them. The house was pretty large and seemed very well maintained.
He also saw some strange things in the town that he wanted to get a closer look at. With a quick flash step Yamamoto appeared in an empty alleyway near the edge of the town. From there he stepped out onto the sidewalk and took a look around.
There were many people walking about, not surprising as it was still mid day. Among these many people there were a few with animal features attached to them. Yamamoto sensed them through his spiritual sense and could not differ their souls from the other regular humans around them. He guessed to for however different they were on the outside, in the end they were still just humans.
As he stood there on the street surveying his surroundings he noticed people giving him odd looks. He became weary, he hadn't realized he could be seen by these humans, actually it should be impossible for them to even perceive his existence! As he started to turn to go back into the alley way someone approached him.
"Are you alright sir?" asked a feminine voice from behind him.
He turned and saw a woman with pale blonde hair and piercing blue eyes approaching him, she was holding a shopping bag and was staring at him with concern.
"I believe so" Responded Yamamoto not having anything else to say.
Unfortunately for him she persisted in her questioning "Are you sure? I don't mean to offend but your clothes look ragged and dirty, and I don't think I could live with myself letting an old man with one arm wander about like that."
What was he supposed to say here? 'Oh don't worry about me I already died in a war before arriving at this world but I'm here to find a student to train so I can get stronger' he'd be called insane and thus Yamamoto tried an age old method. Walking away.
As he turned and started leaving he felt her get close to him and grab him, she could definitely have not held him there if he didn't allow it, but he didn't want to make a bigger scene than the one he was already causing. People were looking at the two of them and some had an odd device on their hand and had it pointed at the pair. Some type of recording device he assumed and thus he let her hold him there.
"Please at least let me get you something to eat before you go." She insisted. While Yamamoto wanted to admire her willingness to help a random stranger it was causing him more and more trouble.
"Thank you for the offer but I'm fi-" *GROWWWL*
Whatever he was going to say was interrupted by the engine-like growl of his stomach. 'You are a traitorous little shit' He thought to his stomach. He was about to try and say no again, but it was too late. She had already accepted that as a yes and was leading him by the arm saying something about a restaurant.
Yamamoto sighed and let her lead.
After a short while they found themselves in front of a diner. She had been talking the whole time throughout the walk. He had half paid attention, and half kept looking at his surroundings. Apparently she was from a family with 7 kids. Went to a combat school of some sort in preparation of becoming a hunter or maybe she already was one? Well good on her Yamamoto supposed, it wasn't often these youngsters thought about how to support their family, nor was it their job, but it was interesting to see one thinking about their family.
As they entered the diner it wasn't crowded, but not empty either, just a few people here and there. She led them towards an empty booth and called a waitress over. The waitress gave them a menu and told them to call her when they were ready to order.
As he looked at the menu he would die before he admitted it, but he was glad there were pictures on it. He'd never been to a human diner before and didn't know what half of the things on it were, so he just picked out whichever picture looked the most appetizing. Eventually they both ordered and had their food arrive.
Yamamoto had to admit, the food was delicious. He didn't think living humans were capable of such culinary feats with the short time they had to hone their skills, but the superVale Bacon Double Cheeseburger was proving him wrong. As they ate they chatted a bit.
"So... did you get attacked by a Grimm?" she asked with little to no tact.
Yamamoto decided to give a half truth he felt as though he owed it to her, to the person going so far to feed him. "The place where I lived was attacked, there was much destruction and death that day, I... left that place and have been travelling since"
"By the brother gods that's horrible!" She said as he finished talking.
'Little too much info there, let's do damage control' he said to himself
"It's alright, it happened a lifetime ago, and I've just been wandering around from place to place since" he said not exactly lying, but the truth was so stretched it may as have been a piece of gum he gave her. Luckily she seemed to buy it.
"I'm glad it wasn't recent, but you still have my condolences for your loss." she said in a gentle tone. "Though I must ask, when was the last time you had that... robe? fixed?" She said as she looked over him with a critical eye. Yamamoto wanted to be insulted, but realistically he was wearing rags.
A realization struck him, 'the fucking system could have fixed my clothes!' but it didn't, 'it must have found the situation amusing' thought Yamamoto. As he hid his frustration from... from... he hasn't even asked her name.
"I fear that I must ask this even after you already fed me, but may I ask for your name?" Yamamoto said trying to distract himself from his ire.
"Oh by the brothers!" she said to herself and she put a palm on her face, "I forgot to introduce myself, Hello my name is Violet Arc" she said with a smile.
She held out a hand and said, "It's nice to meet you Mister..."
"Yamamoto" I said as I grasped her out held hand and shook.
"Well Mr. Yamamoto, how do you feel about getting out of those rags and getting some new clothes?" she said with a smile as if she didn't just roast his fit.
It stung a little more that Yamamoto was ever willing to tell the world, and so he ignored and responded ready to deny her, "You are too kind Miss Arc...", wait a minute Arc as in the same name as his soon to be sla- student? No it couldn't be, the name might be a common surname in this world. What if it isn't though, how will I explain that I'm going to need to be taking Jaune for a while?Wait why was she grabbing him.
Yamamoto lost in his musings forgot to respond in negative to her offer, and once again she saw that as agreement. After a short while of being dragged around he found himself in front of a small clothing shop.
"Here we are" she said brightly, "Ilos clothing! She's one of the best in the business, I always go to her when I need anything either custom made, fashionable, or durable she does it all." she explained as she dragged him inside.
Once inside he realized it was, well he didn't want to say messy, but not quite as spacious as a store this size should be. There were clothes everywhere, no sense of organization that he could see. Hell he lost sight of Violet, were he not able to sense her he'd assume the shop to be some extra dimensional labyrinth. As he wandered the shop looking around he sensed violet approaching him with an unfamiliar person besides her.
He turned and saw her companion, she was a caramel skinned redhead with short hair and sharp jagged purple eyes. As she approached she greeted him, "Hey, you must be the Yamamoto that Violet was talking about. Names Ilos if you need threads look nowhere else." she said as she held out her hand for a handshake.
"It's good to make your acquaintance" he responded as he shook her hand. As soon as he touched her though he felt something wash over him, he could only best describe it as if he went through a waterfall. He gripped her hand harder and in a serious voice asked, "What did you just attempt to do?"
He could see her grimace at the strength of his hold, "Woah calm down old man, it's just my semblance Measure, it's what allows me to get the perfect fittings for my clients!" and so he let her go.
"My apologies, I'm not exactly receptive to things done without my knowledge in surprise" Yamamoto said neutrally, he may have been too rash. He's not surrounded by enemies but by civilians, he needs to be more careful in the future.
"Yeesh, hell of a grip you have there old man. Can't say I didn't earn it, just didn't think you were a hunter so I assumed you wouldn't be able to feel it." she said while shaking her hand, she didn't seem to be too mad though and by her words she's probably experienced something similar before.
"Still I may have over reacted" Yamamoto said admitting to that fault.
But she wouldn't have it, "Haha don't stress it old man, as an apology on my part I'll give you 25% off on top of your first purchase 25% off discount" Ilos said with a bright smile on her face. "Now what kinda clothes do you want?" she looked at what I was wearing and said "Yeah that needs to go, it's exactly as bad as violet here was telling me"
'Oh damn Violet was still there and saw that small confrontation' Yamamoto thought as he focused on her. She didn't look suspicious of him but instead her face was something in between smug and happy, it was an I knew there was more type of face.
(AN: Smug Anya)
"I did suspect you were some type of huntsman, probably a retired one Yamamoto and that right there confirms it" Violet said pointing a finger at him.
Yamamoto was beginning to suspect the term huntsman was not what he thought it was, at the moment all he could do was answer, "Something like that"
"Helloooo?" interrupted Ilos, "That's nice and all Violet dear but the gentleman still hasn't decided what he wants to wear"
"He has" Answered Violet
"He has?/I have?" Asked both Ilos and the old man at the same time.
"Yes, I decided he would look great in a suit so get him one of those" Violet said with her arms crossed and a look of absolute confidence on her face.
Ilos and Yamamoto just stared. Until Ilos turned to look at him, and him? Well he just shrugged and nodded, it's not as if he was to be the one paying anyways so he may as well. Ilos nodded at him and then went somewhere deeper in the shop.
One thing greatly bothered him, why had Violet helped him at all? It didn't feel as though she had sinister intentions but he felt like she was going too far for a mere stranger like him, so he spoke.
"Excuse me Violet I must ask, if you had me pegged for a hunter why did you bother to help me, why even help me it all it kind of feels as though you're going too far for a complete stranger?" for if she believed him to be a hunter she must have suspected he could get by at the very least
Violet looked away for a while, her sunny disposition gone like a ripple in water slowly spreading thin until it is gone, hesitating before telling him, "My husband Noah Arc was a hunter, and he was exemplary, at least he was until he failed. You see there was a Grimm infestation near one of the small villages in Vale. A common occurrence when too much negativity gathers and my husband was called to dispatch it, but he got there too late, the call had been made far too late, but he encountered stragglers of that village the few that managed to get away blamed him, they blamed him for their lost children and the children blamed him for being orphaned. In reality I know they were just angry and needed to lash out, but the damage they did was real."
She was silent for a moment, before she took a deep breath and continued, "After that day he wasn't the same, he tried not to show it but those words had cut him deeply, and so every mission after he pushed himself, to be faster, to be stronger, to be better, to be perfect. He kept that up until he pushed too far and suddenly he was gone."
She took another deep breath, but this time he could hear the shudders in her attempt to breathe, "When we held his funeral word had been spread to the settlements he saved in case they wanted to visit and pay their respects one last time. Not a single one of them showed, only his colleagues and his teammates, but everyone else had abandoned him." Her retelling of the events was clear even as her voice cracked in the color of grief. "So when I saw you, aged, ragged, scarred, and yet holding yourself as a warrior I feared that I was looking at someone else abandoned, someone else pushing to the limits for people that will not thank them. I'm sorry, I'm sorry! but I just didn't want to see you break and even if I could have been wrong I couldn't bear even the thought of that happening again!"
She could no longer hold her grief back as she cried and cried. Yamamoto in that moment understood, that this youngster had wounds that had never healed, wounds that should have never been obtained.
In response Yamamoto did something he hadn't done in a millennium, not since he raised those brats Shunsui and Ukitake. He held her, he held that youngster and consoled her. "Do not worry for me child" He said as gently as he could with his voice grizzled by age, "I can see you've been through pain that I could not imagine and it has left you scarred, but this scar will never heal if you do not let it. You must look to the future and not the past if you ever hope to heal, but for now I will hold you." and hold her he did as she wailed and cried and let it all out, like a grandfather protecting his grandchild. Eventually she cried no more, too exhausted mentally and emotionally so she succumbed to sleep and he was left there, holding a sleeping youngster in the middle of the shop.
"Hey" Ilos said rather quietly on his left, "I'm sorry you had to go through that, ever since Noah has left us she's been trying to hold it together, but Noah really was her everything"
"Hmm" responded Yamamoto once again somehow finding himself out of his depth, he needed to place down this youngster though, while he could stand there all day he doubted either Violet or Ilos would like that.
"Do you have anywhere we can let her rest" he asked her.
"Sure, just follow me to the back" and follow her he did, eventually he stepped into a room after her and noticed as he entered that the room had all the necessities to live here, in fact this was probably where Ilos lived
"Lay her down on the mattress there" said Ilos and he did as instructed. Afterwards he just stood by the door, lost in thought.
How odd to find himself comforting someone after about a millennium since the last time he had to do that with the last people being his students who were as tough as they come, but even they needed consoling at some points back when they were just sprouts.
"Hey, I wanted to say thank you" Ilos said sitting down in one of the chairs in the room.
"What for?" he hadn't done anything particularly difficult
"For being here, when she lost Noah she didn't shed even a single tear, she couldn't. She had to put a brave face for her for all 10 of her kids, and in keeping up that mask of happiness of everything being fine for her kids she never truly confronted her own grief." she said in a subdued voice, "I only ever noticed because I'm one of her closest friends" she sighed and stood up, "So to thank you."
Ilos in a better mood now said with a smile, "As a reward I'll give you the set of clothes for free"
"You don't need t-" he was quickly cut off by a, "Just accept it old man, plus if you don't it's not you who'll be playing it's Violet and her too good heart, so I won't be taking no for an answer"
Yamamoto sighed, he was getting too old for this shit, "Very well"
"Nice I left your clothes in the dressing rooms, it's going to be in the one in the corner" Ilos said in a more cheery voice than before. "I'll be around the shop while Violet rests, so don't worry yourself for now and go try out the clothes, I will guarantee that you'll love them" she said as she moved past him out the door and into her shop.
With nothing better to do he went over to the fitting rooms and tried on his new clothes. He silently prayed for his battle garments as he discarded them from his person, for they were definitely dead, basically rags at this point. As he looked upon the new clothes he signed and began to dress. He donned a nice 3 piece black suit with a dark red jacket. He had a coat too but instead decided to wear it on his shoulder, letting it feel like the familiar weight of his captain's robe.
(AN: Imagine Yamamoto in a cool suite, with Crocodiles same style of jacket hanging of his back but colored dark red instead of white)
Yamamoto had to admit it, Ilos knew what she was doing. The clothes felt great on him, not too tight, not too loose, just right. He also had to admit that Violet knew her sense of fashion if she was the one to order this for him, either her or Ilos. As he looked over himself he decided to step out and let the peasants bask in his drip, not that he would ever word it that way or even understand those words.
(AN:I was going somewhere else with this at the beginning but got lost in the way there and now we have this, teehee)
