Hi everyone! This chapter was created to give closure to some of the plots and characters. The next one will come faster (if I get to organize the pages I already have) and will be dedicated to Octavia. I think she's a very important character in my fic so it makes sense for her to have her own closure. Anyways, despite everything I really hope you enjoy this one.
The morning has arrived and unlike Lexa who is sleeping peacefully due to the sedative, Clarke has been dozing on and off. She's laying on a gurney next to Lexa, thanks to her mother who facilitated the accommodation. Watching Lexa by her side gave her a little bit of comfort and relief after what she did at the council meeting. She's not regretful, as she did it with a purpose in mind, one that was not only beneficial to her and Lexa but to the whole nation. Clarke took a calculated risk; she can only hope the council agrees and takes her resignation as an admission of her guilt and allows her to move on.
A soft knock on the door brings Clarke out of her thoughts.
Seconds later Octavia carefully makes her way inside the room.
Clarke props herself on her elbow to get a better look at her friend. She makes sure Lexa is still sleeping before asking, "when's my trial?"
Octavia exhales loudly and long before replying "well…"
The previous night.
After a couple of minutes of complete silence in the throne room and realizing Octavia is just as stunned as everyone else, Indra begins to speak up. She opens her mouth, not knowing exactly what she's going to tell everyone when suddenly a voice breaks the stillness within the room.
"How unfortunate", Luna rises from her seat and directs at everyone. "The prisoner found a way to free herself and lunged at the commander".
The words perk Octavia's attention; she's now carefully listening to the nightblood.
Indra is too confused to formulate a sentence.
At that moment and understanding exactly what Luna is trying to do, Roan adds, "yes the commander had no other choice but to defend herself. Indeed, it's very unfortunate."
The once silent room is overtaken by loud deliberations.
Indra and Octavia stare at each other completely blown away by what both leaders are suggesting.
Kane remains in his seat astonished, but not intervening. He doesn't want to be seen as taking sides since he is the Sky people's Chancellor.
Through the loud voices and chaos, some of the comments from the clan leaders can be made out.
"Yes, that's what happened".
"She had to do it".
"It was the prisoner or her".
Resuming her duty as the Counselor of the Commander and currently the one in charge, Indra calls for attention. "Order! Order in the throne room!"
The entire room becomes silent.
Having taken control of the situation, Indra starts. "Before we make a decision, I want to make sure everything is in the clear". She glances around the seats and asks. "Do you all agree with the leader of Floukru and with King Roan's statements?"
The answers seem to be unanimous.
"Yes, we do".
"Yes".
Luna and Roan look pleased with the outcome.
Indra turns to the side, trying to get Octavia's opinion.
The general simply shrugs.
If the assassination of Echo at the hands of Clarke hasn't completely sunk into Indra's mind; the whole justification done by the council is simply inconceivable for the woman. Yet as the moderator of this meeting she allows the final decision of the council to rule the verdict, regardless of her own views. "Then let it be the way you have decided", Indra pronounces. "Scriber!" She faces the man in charge to transcribe the official council meetings. "It shall be put on record the will of the council."
"There will be no trial… Commander".
Clarke snaps up to a seating position. "What do you mean?"
Octavia moves closer to her friend and informs, "they all justified it as self-defense. It was written into the books; Echo attacked you and you had to protect yourself".
"That's not right!". Clarke exclaims while moving her head from side to side.
"Well, that was the council's unanimous decision. If you're willing to go against them, be my guest." Octavia shrugs still in awe herself.
Clarke runs a hand through her hair. Of all the possible scenarios she imagined her reprimand would go, this was the one she didn't even consider. Clarke was certain the council wouldn't send her to jail for her actions but being completely exonerated without any consequences, she can't accept it; it doesn't seem fair to her. "I will have to deal with that later". She decides to concentrate on the moment and accelerate dealing with the current issues at hand. "Tell Orita to be ready for a meeting with the council later today."
"Sure thing", Octavia confirms. When she notices Lexa beginning to stir, she excuses herself. "I'll leave you to it. I'm gonna check on Esiry".
A few seconds after Octavia left, Lexa opens her eyes. The first thing she encounters is Clarke staring at her tenderly.
"Morning", the commander greets in a low voice filled with affection.
"Morning". Lexa can't help smiling at the beautiful view but a grunt escapes her lips immediately afterward.
"How are you feeling?" Clarke asks concerned, leaning her face onto the mattress to be at eye level with Lexa
"Better than yesterday". Lexa replies honestly.
Making sure she's alright Clarke concedes. "OK."
They stare at each other lovingly for a few seconds.
Then Clarke breaks the comfortable silence with a hard confession.
"I killed Echo".
Lexa's eyes which until that moment were drowsy, pop wide open.
No need for questions, Clarke knows Lexa wants to hear more. "I couldn't stand the idea of her being a constant threat to Polis… and to us. I threw a spear into her chest from the throne, just like you did with Queen Nia".
The loud intake of breath coming from her is inevitable. Lexa is impressed… and proud. She's very aware her situation and Clarke's are different, times have changed and other laws are in order but she also knows that just like when she did it, it was completely necessary. Lexa could ask for details but decides is not the right time and since Clarke looks so calm with it, she lets it be. She simply nods firmly, like in her commander days "good. You did good" it's all she comments about the subject.
Instinctively, Clarke reaches for Lexa's hand, threading their fingers together. A tacit understanding between lovers and leaders.
…
Raven arrives at the clinic with the intention to visit Myrreh and Lexa but also to find out more about what happened in the throne room. She debates at the entrance who to see first but the choice is made for her.
"RAVEN!" Bellamy's voice echoes not far away from her.
Raven cringes, guessing what probably is coming her way.
…
After some comfortable silence, Lexa feels like sharing "I saw Costia"
Clarke tips her head to the side. "What do you mean you saw her?"
"At the spirit world. I was there for a few minutes when I passed out during…" Lexa stops knowing the effect it will have on her girlfriend.
And Clarke gets it. She clenches her jaw and swallows a sudden knot in her throat but, determined not to ruin the mood she carries on. "So, you saw her like... in talk to her and stuff?"
"Yeah, I even hug her it was… beautiful" Lexa expresses with melancholy in her voice.
Clarke offers a sympathetic smile. She knows all about the story with Costia and it broke her heart to think about Lexa losing her first love like that. "I'm sure it was." She voices glad that at least Lexa got to see Costia one last time even if it was in spirit.
Lexa smiles this time "I'm so happy the spirits gave me the chance to say goodbye properly"
When Clarke tries to say something else, Lexa adds.
"You know? She told me things… very interesting things"
It gets Clarke's full attention. "What things?"
Lexa crosses her arms in front of herself resting her chin on them. "She said some people are allowed to come back in the spirit form to guide and help the person they care for and love."
"Oh." The news indeed sounds interesting to Clarke and enigmatic. She's eager to listen to more of it.
"Some of my loved ones are here, accompanying me in spirit." When she watches Clarke's inquisitive expression she offers, "like herself, Anya, Gustus... and you."
"Me?!"
"Yes! I was just as shocked as you when she said that!" Lexa exclaims. "So, I was trying to figure out who could be who!"
"Uh." Clarke shakes her head trying to remove the impression and helping her girlfriend with some ideas. "Ok, Anya and Gustus…" She recalls conversations she had with Lexa in the past. But then a sudden memory pops up in her mind. "Wait a sec…" she lets out while a sense of uneasiness and fear invades her at the image of Anya in front of her, the first time she met her. Then another memory seems to share that same sentiment: the day Jahnisce warned Clarke not to hurt Lexa. "Oh, God… I think Anya may be … in your mom."
Lexa's eyes grow larger. "But that…" She reconsiders for a few seconds; her mother has always been a great adviser just like Anya was when she was preparing to be the commander. "Jok! Then it means…" Lexa makes another connection. Malku is a big man, a warrior who taught her how to use weapons, how to fight; just like… "Gustus is in my dad!"
It made complete sense to Clarke. Anya and Gustus were both mentors to Lexa at a very young age, parental figures so to speak. It was only natural their souls chose to be the closest to her and the most important people in her life, her parents. "That's… wow!"
They stare at each other completely blown away.
Their moment of awe is interrupted by a knock on the door.
Clarke looks at Lexa and when she gets her silent confirmation she calls out. "Come in!"
Raven enters the room excitedly. "Omg, you guys! I'm so happy everything worked out!" She exclaims before getting more serious. "How are you feeling Lexa?"
"I'm good thank you," Lexa replies suddenly giddy, she rearranges so she can face the woman. "I heard you had a big part in my rescue Raven, I really want to thank you for it, without your help things probably wouldn't have come out the way they did."
"Oh stop," Raven smirks shyly. "I did my part and I'm glad it got you back to us, especially to Clarkey." She ends quirking her lips upwards.
Clarke's face lights up, looking at her girlfriend contently, feeling utterly lucky. Lexa returns the enamored gaze.
"Ugh, you're disgustingly cute!" Raven interjects faking annoyance. "Enough with the cheesiness I want to hear all about your badass display in the throne room!"
…
Orita, after some deserved rest, comes to the clinic to check on Esiry, her battle companion. She's about to reach the entrance when she crosses paths with Octavia.
"Orita, I was looking for you," Octavia informs a bit distracted.
The girl notices something off in Octavia's vibe but doesn't dare to mention it.
"In a few hours, we will have a meeting with the council and the Commander. I will send someone to let you know the exact time, be ready." Said that Octavia leaves the scene.
Orita stands there confused not knowing what to expect of this very intimidating meeting.
…
With Clarke gone to attend her meetings with the council and after the short visit by her parents Lexa takes the opportunity to rest and contemplate the conversation she had with Clarke earlier. They already solved where Anya and Gustus's souls were but there are still two people missing. 'And who could possibly be…'
Someone knocks on the door.
"Come in."
Esiry enters the room and stands near the door, staring at Lexa; the events of last week hitting her hard at the vision of her wounded friend. A brief moment later and like she just came back to reality she gives a sly smile to Lexa and waves at her. "Hi!"
Lexa gasps at the action, someone coming into her mind.
"All I can say is, I'm a friend… I'm close to you as a really good friend".
The words of Costia ring in Lexa's head clearly but then something else comes to her; the flower bouquet Esiry gave her at her birthday party, with the sole rare flower Costia used to wear on her ear. Now everything makes sense. 'Of course!' Lexa's face illuminates in a giant beam at the discovery. "Hey!" She beckons her friend to come closer.
Esiry gets closer, somehow confused by Lexa's over-enthusiastic reaction. "Is everything ok?" She's concerned her friend may not be as well as she seems.
Lexa simply laughs. "Yeah, I'm fine Esiry. I'm just happy to see you."
The sense that Lexa is hiding something bugs Esiry but she guesses her friend will tell her when she finds it fitting. For now, she wants to make sure Lexa is recovering and focuses on sharing what they went through, to gain some peace of mind.
…
Some hours later a nervous Orita arrives at the throne room after receiving the official notice from a messenger. She waits outside as she's announced.
The guards open the door indicating for her to come in.
Orita steps inside, feeling her stomach churning when she notices the clan leaders in their respective seats staring at her. She walks into the middle of the room and bows to the Commander.
Clarke sits upright on her throne and enunciates. "May I present to you Orita of Trikru, the head of the whole operation."
Each clan leader nod their head in Orita's direction as a sign of respect, some even make comments.
"We appreciate your effort and bravery warrior."
"We thank you for your service and loyalty."
The teen is intimidated and overwhelmed but manages to respond. "Um, you're welcome. It was my honor," She nods back at them.
With the pleasantries out of the way, Clarke explains. "I really thought it was necessary for you to meet our hero and remember her face." She then remarks, "I also wanted to let you know she won't be decorated during the ceremony of celebration to avoid putting her life in danger, in case any remains of the rebels attempt revenge."
All the clan leaders seem to agree with Clarke's plan.
"Will she be rewarded accordingly, Commander?" Roan questions.
Orita opens her mouth to decline the offer but Clarke speaks.
"Of course, she will," Clarke declares. "She and her family will receive lands and other benefits that will ensure their future and give our hero the life she deserves." She makes eye contact with Orita. "Unless you have a problem with that warrior."
In fact, Orita does have a problem with that but the way Clarke is staring at her, so assertive makes her keep to herself whatever reservation she may have. "No, I don't have a problem with that…. Commander." Then swallowing her pride, she carries on. "I appreciate your generous gesture. I'm sure my family would be grateful."
Clarke smiles at Orita's first positive interaction with her since forever. And that's exactly what prompts her to thank Orita once again but this time as the commander. "Orita of Trikru you must know your display of bravery and intelligence will never be forgotten, the doors of Polis will always be open for you whatever you need." Said that she stands up and proclaims, "to keep your identity private in meetings and formal statements from now on you shall be known as Stratheda. Shall be written and remain that way on the record."
Octavia chuckles, 'The Commander of Strategy, how appropriate.' She thinks to herself.
Orita is left speechless staring dumbfounded at Clarke.
"I wish you good luck in your endeavors and hope one day you decide to come here and train to become a proper warrior and a good leader, you certainly were born to be one. May we meet again, Stratheda."
Bowing instinctively Orita understands it's time to go. She turns around and nods her farewell to the clan leaders, as she walks away.
"Stratheda."
"Stratheda."
The clan leaders nod back, using now the brand-new title given to Orita by the Commander.
…
Once the girl leaves the premises, Clarke moves to a rather more decisive subject. "Now I would like to address last night's events."
Everyone in the room pays full attention to Clarke, overly curious and expectant since she didn't mention the subject at the beginning of their meeting.
Clarke looks briefly at Indra.
Indra was informed by Clarke about her intentions earlier and despite her reservations she understood and accepted Clarke's points. The woman assents with her head in silent encouragement.
With Indra's blessing, Clarke steps down from the throne and walks to the middle of the room to the same spot Orita occupied earlier and says "I truly appreciate what you did for me allowing me to continue to carry this title that I hold with honor. But is in respect of that honor that I decided to resign as a commander."
Gasps and expressions of shock can be heard.
Before any of them can question her decision Clarke explains. "I truly feel I'm not fit for this title anymore; it would be hypocritical of me to continue being the commander having broken the same law I helped to create." She looks around the clan leaders and continues "I firmly believe a commander should always carry the higher standards of a leader. I know we all make mistakes and make rushed decisions, we're human after all but the foundation of law can't simply be broken without consequences, not even for a commander so, I step aside to let another person take my place, one that carries the integrity of a leader and can assure the level of obedience and respect of our laws."
The leaders exchange gazes with each other.
Finally, Indra interjects. "Members of the council, now that the Commander has explained herself, I must ask; Do you accept her resignation?"
Disappointed at Clarke's decision but sympathetic with her motives the clan leaders chant in unison. "We do!"
Clarke sighs lowering her head in relief.
"All right then" Indra starts "When will you be officially stepping down from your position Commander?"
"I think it will be appropriate to do it right after the ceremony of celebrations, we can take the opportunity to introduce the new commander there." Clarke proposes.
After she got everyone's approval Clarke asks for the floor again. "If it's not too much to ask I have a recommendation for a commander."
"Oh, of course, you can make a recommendation Commander" Indra voices "And who would that person be?"
"I would like to propose…" Clarke twists her body in the direction of one clan leader "…Luna"
To say the nightblood is impressed by the recommendation would be an understatement.
"As I mentioned earlier, we need someone who can carry the integrity of a leader, one who believes in reason instead of violence, one that will ensure peace and protection." Clarke connects eyes with Luna. "Characteristics that I firmly believe Luna of The Boat Clan possesses." she then sports a sly smirk as she finalizes "Besides, I think it's about time a nightblood retakes leadership, under better circumstances this time."
Luna stares at Clarke with a smile in response.
The option seems to sound good in the ears of the other clan leaders.
"And what do you think, Luna of Floukru?" Indra questions before making any announcement.
Luna stands up, still a little taken aback by the whole turning of events, nevertheless, she responds to the question with conviction. "If that's what the council sees appropriate, it would be my honor to serve and lead our nation."
"Very well," Indra directs "may we discuss this topic further and make a final decision."
Clarke, pleased with herself returns to her throne with a bittersweet sensation inside, knowing these are the last days she will sit in it.
…
After having been avoiding it for some hours, Abby enters Lexa's room for her routine checkup. She acts like she normally does but suddenly stops in her tracks when she sees Lexa's face. The apparent discovery she made while checking on Lexa's scans still haunting her.
"Hey Abby, haven't seen you all day," Lexa says noticing the woman's apprehension.
"Oh hi, Lexa" Abby replies shaking her head slightly "I -I've been busy with… you know" She chuckles awkwardly.
"Of course," Lexa nods, still finding weird the woman's attitude.
Abby stands there, staring at Lexa, scrutinizing her gestures, her face, her eyes. And it is there that she sees it; something that evokes memories from her mind.
"Abby?" Lexa calls worried.
The woman startles, eyes wide open. It is only when she notices Lexa's expression of concern that she gathers herself. She clears her throat, takes and deep breath, and just like that she's Doctor Griffin once again. "So, let's get you check-up" Abby proceeds to come closer to Lexa and examine her. After some minutes of careful study, she voices. "You seem to be doing well. If you continue this way, I may let you go in four or five days" She ends with confidence.
"Oh, that's would be great, thank you, Abby, this wouldn't be possible without you" Lexa expresses looking at Abby with a soft smile.
Abby once again gets lost trying to analyze Lexa's face but stops herself before she can be discovered. "My pleasure" then putting aside her concerns she grabs Lexa's arm fondly and states "You're family now" she gives it a little squeeze before letting go. "Now get some rest, I'll come back later"
Lexa can't help feeling a bit emotional, she doesn't speak but sends the woman a grin that says it all.
Abby winks at her before exiting the room entirely, leaving Lexa with a fully contented heart.
…
As Abby had anticipated Lexa was released after the fifth day, under the promise she would rest.
Despite her protests, Lexa was taken to the tower in a wheelchair by Clarke herself. Her parents were by her side but as soon as they made it to Clarke's room, they said their goodbyes to give the couple privacy.
Regarding Lexa's care, there were no concerns since Clarke was more than qualified to perform that task. She helps Lexa to lay on the bed on her stomach careful to leave her wounds untouched. She prepares everything for the night, before joining Lexa in bed.
"Hey" Clarke whispers their usual greeting laying on her side, facing Lexa.
"Hey," Lexa whispers back with a tired smile.
Clarke extends her hand and strokes Lexa's face tenderly, like memorizing her features once again. "I'm glad you're here."
"Me too"
Their words subtly admitting both were scared.
"I love you so much Lexa" Clarke lets out, trying hard to contain her emotions.
Lexa immediately reaches for Clarke's hand unable to watch her like this, her next words slipping from her lips as natural and easy as breathing. "I love you so much, Clarke"
Everything they bottled up in the last days in favor to make the mission work, seems to be wanting a way of release.
At first, just like Clarke, Lexa wants to push down her emotions but realizes there's no need to. They are in the peacefulness of Clarke's room, they just went through a lot, it is only natural and necessary for them to spill their guts so to speak. So, Lexa takes the initiative and admits out loud. "I was so scared, Clarke. Costia told me I was going to be ok but there were moments when I feared I would die and never see you again." She starts venting, her lips beginning to tremble "and I thought about you, suffering again I didn't want that Clarke, I don't want that. The idea of you going through the same again was agonizing for me, more than my own pain, and couldn't stand it I couldn't I…" Lexa's throat constricts making her unable to continue.
"Shh" Clarke, with tears in her eyes, scoots closer to Lexa, leaning her forehead on hers. "I know baby I know" she mumbles among sobs.
With Clarke so close Lexa feels her chest open up, allowing her tears to flow without restrictions.
"I was so scared to lose you." Clarke manages "I don't think my heart could be able to take that again." she confesses, voice trembling.
Lexa shakes her head and with eyes closed, she lets out "I don't wanna die, Clarke, I don't wanna leave you."
Clarke's heart breaks at the raw admission. Lexa's words pierce into her soul, reflecting in her own terror. It feels so good to let it all out finally and allow themselves to cry and express themselves but never forgetting the good in it. "you're here now with me baby. You're here and you're safe. I won't let you go; I promise. I don't let me go either."
With that said they succumb to their emotions and cry together, wanting to release it all. Glad they still have each other to do that. And that's the consolation that keeps them looking into their future with optimism.
…
The Celebrations for the end of the war and the successful rescue took place some days later in the big arena where warriors of the army train, allowing everyone who desired, to attend. Over the platform, a stage was set up for the occasion where the special guests stood along with Clarke, Lexa, and Octavia. As per usual, Indra conducted the ceremony describing each event with enthusiasm and pride. The audience eagerly listened to the tales, cheering and reacting when the most pivotal parts were mentioned. Later the heads of each army were summoned to the stage to be decorated for their active participation. Esiry and Myrreh also got decorated as heroes; one for the rescue of Lexa and the other for capturing Echo. Orita was there too but as a spectator only because as it was previously arranged, she was not to be introduced due to her security. Raven was decorated like a very important strategist of the mission. Octavia was the last to be decorated for leading the army with assertiveness and for carrying the war with the least casualties ever. Clarke shared a look with Orita during her thank you speech, silently acknowledging her part in the mission, which the teen received modestly. Sadly, at the very end, Clarke announced her decision to step down from her role as commander. This created an uproar and not so good responses but Clarke tried to explain her reasons to them and even though they were unhappy they completely accepted her arguments. But then the people became excited again when she informed the crowd the council had accepted her recommendation for the new commander and if they approved it would be Luna. The prospect of having a nightblood again as a commander sounded thrilling to the people, so they immediately agreed. After Indra announced that they would inform everyone when the ascension ceremony would take place, she invited them to enjoy the public banquet accompanied by music.
At some point, while Octavia was among the people and enjoying the traditional grounder's music, Indra made her appearance. Octavia looked at her wondering why she had such an amused expression on her face when suddenly Indra produced a sword.
"This belongs to you", Indra hands over the sword of the Commander's Army to Octavia.
Octavia stares at it in shock. Then she lifts her gaze connecting it with Indra, still unsure.
The woman understands Octavia's hesitation and explains. "I told you it would be returned to you when you proved you were deserving of it, and you are. You led your army to war and you ended it without a single death on your hands, you should be proud Octavia, as I am of you", she shoves the sword in Octavia's direction.
This time, and with a sly smirk Octavia takes the sword, immediately sensing the weight her hands has been missing for a while. She gives it a few swings to familiarize herself with it, letting out a long breath when she realizes it still feels the same. Octavia then makes eye contact with Indra. "Thank you", she offers her arm, gratitude showing on her face.
Indra displays a sincere smile and takes Octavia's arm giving it a firm shake.
They share a meaningful moment, while they silently convey their feelings and the strong bond that unites them.
"OK then", Indra is the first to pull away not wanting the moment to become emotional. "Now let's share a drink together General". She puts her arm around Octavia's shoulder and leads her towards the bar.
"Oh," Octavia is taken aback by the offer but gladly accepts the invitation from her mentor and in a way, a mother figure.
…
Even though the celebrations were still going on, Lexa and Clarke decided to retreat to their room. Clarke didn't want Lexa to be exposed to any unnecessary effort, so she made them come back early.
Lexa could have argued, but, in all honesty, she wanted nothing more than to spend time alone with her girl.
"I want to take a bath", Lexa says, feeling some relaxation is needed.
"Oh OK, let me prepare it for you!" Clarke volunteers, busying herself with the task.
Lexa shakes her head and chuckles at her girlfriend's eagerness.
An hour later Lexa is resting on top of Clarke in the bathtub enjoying thoroughly Clarke's attention and care. Like it's been since she returned to the tower, her blonde girlfriend insisted on Lexa not doing much. Clarke spoiled her by cleaning her body from head to toe and then washed her hair. Talking about being pampered, and for a good while now, all Lexa has been doing is chilling out, with her face on Clarke's boobs.
Sadly, good things have to come to an end, they eventually had to get out of the tub.
Lexa stood up carefully with Clarke's help but she practically begged Clarke to let her dry herself. She won that argument.
So that's how Lexa finds herself currently, drying off her body at one side of the ample bathroom. She maneuvers carefully so as not to hurt her wounds while pretending she doesn't notice Clarke stealing glances at her, ready to jump to her rescue. Lexa lifts her gaze to the mirror to check herself one last time when she accidentally sees Clarke eyeing her with more than just concern.
As soon as Clarke realizes she's been caught, she looks away and starts to get dressed.
It doesn't take long for Lexa to guess what's going on in Clarke's head but she wants to confirm it anyways. "Could you help me?" She asks her girlfriend.
"Sure". Clarke, understanding what she's referring to, grabs Lexa's clothes.
She doesn't know if it's because she was still weak and in pain the past few days, but Lexa didn't notice sooner Clarke's intense contemplation of her body. 'It's probably been happening for some time now', she concludes.
In the meantime, while Clarke is helping Lexa with her underwear, her eyes inevitably fall on Lexa's abs. She makes a great effort not to stare too long but then, as she looks away, they land on Lexa's breasts. Desperately, she grabs hold of Lexa's shirt and tries to quickly cover her up.
It would have been hilarious under different circumstances but Lexa now understands what is happening with Clarke. This is not simple desire, this is Clarke anxiously wanting -needing- to feel Lexa physically to convince herself subconsciously that she's still here, alive. So, Lexa calmly dresses and prepares for bed along with Clarke, with something else in mind.
Clarke does her thing like any other day, even initiating small talk with Lexa until they climb into bed.
As per usual they indulge in an easy make-out session before going to sleep. But this time around, Lexa has other plans and executes them without warning. She takes Clarke by the neck, pulling her closer to her body, and kisses her hard.
An involuntary whine escapes Clarke but she doesn't make an effort to deepen the kiss.
Lexa experimentally trails her hand over Clarke's arm, causing her to expel a loud intake of breath and goosebumps in its wake.
"Lexa…" Clarke breaks off the kiss, catching up on Lexa's intentions. But her young girlfriend has made up her mind, and that becomes even more evident when she makes her way on top of Clarke's body. "Wait wait…" Clarke puts her hands on Lexa's torso.
"Shh," Lexa lets out, placing Clarke's arms above her head.
"Lexa you can't, you're…." Clarke is genuinely concerned for Lexa's well-being -hence the resistance- but her body is telling another story.
"Please…" Lexa argues while placing a kiss on Clarke's neck. "Just be careful with my back", then simply because she's a tease she adds with a smirk, "it'll be quick".
The indignation in Clarke's feature is swiftly erased with another hungry kiss. She can't help let herself go for a few seconds, enjoying Lexa's insistent tongue inside her mouth but soon makes a last attempt to stop her. "Lexa, we can wait…"
"I really want you Clarke", Lexa interrupts, staring right into Clarke's face, and with eyes already heavy with desire she whispers. "Let me love you".
That's all Clarke needs to allow just that, Lexa to love her.
And Lexa doesn't waste time. She kisses Clarke one more time, long and firm before beginning undressing herself. When Clarke wants to follow suit, she stops her. "I will do that", she commands.
Clarke doesn't argue and instead enjoys the show.
When all her clothes are gone, Lexa proceeds to peal Clarke from her garments, painfully slow. While observing the way Clarke's muscles tense up when her fingers graze her skin, Lexa realizes she's not doing only this for Clarke as she originally thought but for herself too. She makes sure to leave a soft trail of kisses on Clarke's skin with every item she removes. Lexa relishes in every grunt, every hiss and moan coming out from Clarke's mouth; the way she squirms and holds onto the sheets for some sort of grounding.
It's been several weeks but Clarke feels like it has been years since the last time Lexa touched her and it is heaven. Her body burns everywhere Lexa brushes, kisses. Truth be told, Clarke was willing to wait whatever time was necessary for Lexa to fully recover but her body can't help but react to her girlfriends' ministrations. It was time to admit to herself, she actually needed this.
Their naked bodies come in contact when Lexa places herself fully on top of Clarke, making them moan in unison. They kiss passionately, their bodies moving on their own accord, rekindling their souls.
Lexa got sidetracked for a moment but soon remembers the whole point of this reconnection. She lets her hand travel down until reaching between Clarke's legs.
Clarke's hands instantly fly onto Lexa's hips where she holds on for dear life.
It was quite the view, Clarke's mouth open, twisting with pleasure, breathing heavily. Lexa can't imagine any other way she would like to spend her night. Even when the small traces of pain threaten to reappear, she refuses to stop, on the contrary, she puts more effort into making Clarke reach her final destination.
Their eyes connect and it's a whole new experience for both of them and their bodies. Lexa suddenly feels energized not only with strength but with desire. Clarke abruptly is struck with warmth all over her body; it's amazing and scary at the same time. Both unite at that moment with only one thought; how blessed they are to be together here, again.
After that, as Lexa had anticipated it didn't take long.
With a final glimpse into green orbs, Clarke comes hard, thanks to Lexa's skillful fingers on her center.
A tiny smile adorns Lexa's lips at her accomplishment. Looking down at her love she could not be happier.
Clarke's hair tangled around her face as her chest rises and falls with her elation.
Lexa waits for Clarke to come down from her high and slowly climbs off of her, careful of her wounds. She lays beside Clarke on her side, embracing her in a bear hug.
"Oh wow," Clarke lets out still with eyes closed. She sighs contently when Lexa places soft kisses all over her face.
"Good?" Lexa asks flirtatiously.
"More than good". Clarke replies with a chuckle, her breathing still labored. The moment is so peaceful and tender that it reminds her of all she was about to miss. Clarke could get emotional but decides not to. This moment is way too good to be tainted with tears. Instead, she channels those feelings into something more productive. "Hey," she whispers placing her hand on Lexa's face and then letting it travel slowly down Lexa's neck and chest.
"Uh," Lexa covers Clarke's hand with hers, stopping its movements. "I would like to sleep now… if you don't mind". She voices apologetically taking Clarke's hand and kissing it lovingly.
"Oh," that seems to alert Clarke reminding her of Lexa's condition. "Right, yeah of course". Immediately she transforms once again into the overprotective girlfriend. "C'mon, lay down." She helps Lexa to get comfy.
Lexa doesn't resist and allows Clarke to take care of her because after the strenuous effort she is really exhausted. She lays again on her stomach and waits for Clarke to join her.
There, getting as close as she can manage and being very careful Clarke snuggles into Lexa.
Already drowsy Lexa mumbles. "That was amazing."
Clarke chuckles and responds softly. "Tell me about it".
"I love you", Lexa breathes, barely audible in the silence, her breathing slowing into a relaxed rhythm.
It is equally cute and funny to Clarke that Lexa just passed out like that, after saying those words. She smiles, tired and satiated too. As sleep takes over her, Clarke whispers to herself the reply her heart can't contain, especially not with Lexa so close. "I love you too".
Now everything was right with their world.
…
Ascension Day came three days later, after Luna's quick visit to the Boat clan to share the news and to get everything in order and of course briefly preparing for the occasion.
It was a fairly uneventful ceremony, with people having bittersweet emotions. Sadness about Clarke leaving but happy they were getting a nightblood as commander once again.
Unlike what she thought, Clarke wasn't as sad as she anticipated, on the contrary, she felt actually relieved to finally be able to live her life without the heavy responsibility of caring for her people, and the world. She only has one person to care for, Lexa who was currently her world; and that was all she needed right now.
Lexa for her part was happy for Luna despite what happened years ago at the conclave, becoming the commander in distinctly different and peaceful circumstances. But mainly she was excited for whatever life had in store for her and Clarke away from any burdens.
Orita stayed for the ceremony before leaving Polis, out of respect for her new commander. When everything was finally over, she discretely made her way off the site, only to be chased after by Esiry.
"Orita", Esiry calls out.
The teen stops immediately.
"Leaving without saying goodbye?"
Orita turns around to face Esiry with a grimace on her face, feeling caught in the act. Noticing the slightly judgmental look from the young nightblood, she explains. "Yeah, sorry I just don't like goodbyes among friends; they bring back bad memories".
Esiry's attitude mellows after the admission "It's OK, I get it".
They remain silent for a few seconds before Orita finally makes things right. "It was an honor to fight by your side Esiry. I wish you good luck on your path to perfect your training as a leader cause you're already a great warrior." She extends her arm with a proud expression on her face.
A bit shy at the compliment, Esiry takes the arm offered, holding it tight conveying she understood the message. "Thank you", but she tries removing some of the seriousness of the mood. "You weren't so bad either".
Orita chuckles and shakes her head.
Knowing this was the goodbye Orita was trying to avoid, Esiry asks a question that may change everything a little bit. "Will I see you again?"
The question, almost a request takes Orita aback, "do you want to?" She asks for good measure, dreading the answer.
Luckily there was nothing to worry about.
"Yeah of course!" Esiry replies matter-of-factly. Then realizing how eager she sounded she attempts to lower the enthusiasm. "We could hang out or who knows maybe train or something". She shrugs casually.
Orita wants to analyze the meaning of this invitation but quickly decides to just take her words at face value and enjoy it with no expectations. "I would like that, yeah." She admits.
Both teens smile at each other with uncertainty, yet hopeful about the possible direction this newfound friendship may lead.
…
On their way back to the tower Abby detaches from Kane's side for a second to approach Clarke and Lexa. "How are you doing?" Always the doctor, she wants to be sure Lexa is progressing well.
"Uh", Lexa answers straight away. "I'm doing great, thank you. The wounds are itchy but the pain is almost gone".
"Great, that's great," Abby replies with excitement, she's about to ask more on the subject when she is suddenly distracted. "Oh, I meant to ask, who's that girl talking with the nightblood?" Abby points at Orita, who's speaking to Esiry a few meters away from them.
When Lexa and Clarke follow her line of view, they notice who she's talking about. They both become awkward.
"That's uh…"
"She's …"
They try to answer, avoiding each other's gaze.
But before Abby can catch on to their awkwardness and ask more questions, Clarke responds. "She's a friend from uh, Lexa's village".
"Oh", Abby seems satisfied with the reply.
Lexa thanks Clarke silently with a glance.
After rolling her eyes at her girlfriend, Clarke needs to know. "Why do you ask?"
Abby giggles to herself before answering. "Nothing important it's just…" she glimpses at the teens already at a distance. "I realized she's like a younger grounder version of you".
Clarke and Lexa stop dead in their tracks at the statement; their heads almost snapping off their necks at how fast they turned to look at each other.
"OK, I have to get back to Marcus. Don't forget your appointment tomorrow", Abby reminds Lexa before excusing herself, never realizing the huge discovery she chanced upon.
They remain rooted to their spots for a couple of minutes, jaws hanging.
"That can't …"
"I don't think…!
Both attempt to lamely express, failing in the process.
Finally coming to a silent agreement and in unison, they let out.
"Nah!"
And with that, they continue on their way to the tower in silence. Both with their own thoughts, trying to convince themselves that what they are thinking can't be true.
….
Later that night and all the formalities over and done with, Luna stands in the throne room alone, considering the events of the day.
"Congratulations, Commander", Lexa's voice breaks the quietness of the place. She makes her way towards Luna and once close, she extends her arm solemnly.
"Thank you very much", Luna interlaces her arm with Lexa's in a firm hold.
After parting, a brief moment of silent contemplation follows. A lot of shared memories among the former young nightbloods occupy their minds.
Finally, Lexa decides to voice some of them. "You were right".
Luna arks a brow, needing more feedback.
"There was a way for nightbloods to become commanders without killing each other. You were right".
Luna's face lights up with excitement. She feels the invisible wall between them has been broken, so she's inclined to be playful. "I told you so".
Lexa chuckles. She then moves on to a more serious stand. "I wish you the best of luck in your new position, I'm sure you will lead our people wisely".
"I'll do my best," Luna assents with her head, humbly. "I promise I will try and continue to cement the path you and Clarke shaped."
"I have no doubt you will". With that Lexa bows respectfully to her new commander. She slowly turns and walks in the direction of the door when she hears Luna call out.
"Lexa?"
The young brunette stops at once and cranes her neck, looking at the other woman.
Luna takes a couple of steps forward, stares at Lexa's face, and enunciates with her chin up, "I would've totally beaten your ass in the conclave".
The comment takes Lexa by surprise, but she recovers quickly. She gyrates her body so she can fully face Luna and assuming her best warrior posture she voices. "Well, I would challenge you here and now but you're the commander and I think it wouldn't be appropriate not to mention the fact that Clarke already ruled them out." Then just because she can she adds. "Besides I'm way younger than you so my advantage is not really fair, grandma".
Luna snorts at Lexa's cheekiness.
But all cheekiness disappears from Lexa's tone with the words she utters next. "And I could mention many other reasons why we shouldn't engage in combat but the truth is," she advances slowly until she's directly in front of Luna. "You walked away from the conclave. You left. I stayed, I fought and I won; and I dealt with the consequences. So, I guess if you're better than me in combat or not, we will never know. You missed your chance to prove that a long time ago". She shrugs and walks away, leaving a stunned Luna standing frozen in place.
