Lucas managed to find his words. "Peyton, what are you doing here? I thought you were in Savannah."
Peyton smirked. "Come on, Luke. I told you I wanted to meet your wife. Did you really think I was going to miss the opportunity to finally meet her?" She narrowed her eyes. "Actually, I think I have seen you before. You were in New York a few weeks ago, weren't you? You had a booth at the bridal expo, didn't you?"
Before Brooke could answer, Haley spoke up. The anger was clear in her voice. "Ok. Peyton, I think we need to talk. Now!" She grabbed Peyton's arm and pulled her back into the building.
The rest of the group went to the side as they waited for Haley to return. Lucas hoped that would stop Owen's hostility towards him.
There was an awkward silence between Lucas and Brooke before he spoke. "So I'm guessing Owen was the other possible father?"
Brooke let out a heavy sigh. "Yeah, he wasn't exactly happy to know that I was allowing you to get to know Ethan."
Lucas nodded understandingly. "I know what you mean. I'm so sorry about Peyton. I had no idea she would be here. Maybe I should leave. I don't want to ruin anyone's night."
Nathan immediately stopped him before he could even move. "You wouldn't be ruining anyone's night. You and Brooke have every right to be here. Don't worry. You know Haley will set her straight."
"What about him?" Lucas gestured to Owen. "I don't want him to give me a hard time just like I don't want Peyton to give Brooke a hard time. This is Mia's night, and I don't want any drama."
"You took the words right out of my mouth," Haley said as she returned to the group. The anger was still on her face, but she was calmer than she was when she first saw Peyton. "Ok, it's all settled. We're all going in."
Lucas was still skeptical about being able to get Owen, but he followed the group back towards the line. Brooke stood protectively in front of him. Owen glared at him when they reached the front of the line, but he allowed everyone to go through including Lucas.
By then, Peyton had disappeared and Lucas couldn't hide his disappointment. He wanted to talk to her privately about her behavior, and warn her to stay away from Brooke.
Like Lucas, Brooke lingered behind the group. It was obvious she wanted to have the same conversation with Owen. But it wasn't the right time for either one of them so they had no choice to continue to follow the group.
Haley led them through the crowded corridor. The volunteers who were working the event were much nicer than Owen was and they were happy to point the group in the right direction.
When they arrived at Mia's dressing room, Nathan and Lucas waited outside while Haley introduced their guests to Mia. Lucas still had doubts about staying, but he wanted to try and have fun. At the same time, he wanted to make sure Peyton stayed away from Brooke.
Everyone emerged from the dressing room in a cheerful mood. Lucas managed a smile as Julian showed off the photos they had taken with Mia. Mia quickly greeted the brothers before she dashed off towards the stage for her first set.
The group was right behind her with Haley in the lead. Although, Haley did remind them that they could probably see better from their seats.
Sam's eyes went wide. "Are you kidding? I always wanted to have backstage passes. According to Julian and Brooke, it's a once in a lifetime experience. Besides, I think it will be more interesting backstage." Both of her siblings looked at her in disapproval. "Hey, you can go to your seats if you want, but I want to stay backstage."
There was no response as they arrived at their destination. Brooke soon lost Sam and Julian. She wandered over to the food and drink table. She grabbed a bottle of water and she glanced through the snack options.
"You can take a bag of chips home for Ethan if you want to," Haley offered as she joined her at the table. "Or do you not allow him to eat these snacks?"
"It's not something I usually give him," Brooke said as she gave her a smile. "His aunts and uncles take care of that department."
Haley smiled in return. "That's so sweet. Listen, I can't apologize enough for Peyton. If she bothers you, please tell me and I will happily ask security to escort her out. Speaking of security, what was the deal with you and the security guard at the door?"
Brooke let out a heavy sigh. "That was Owen."
That was all Haley needed to hear. She had already heard the history between Brooke and Owen. "So do you want me to try and get him to leave?"
Brooke shook her head. "No, I think I can handle it."
"Good because I think we've had enough drama for one day," Haley said. "I'm not sure we can handle anymore."
Brooke frowned. "What do you mean?"
"Victoria stopped by the club earlier and introduced herself," Haley said. Brooke groaned. "She wanted to warn Lucas that he won't be able to have the best of both worlds. She said he will have to choose between you and Ethan or Peyton."
Brooke's eyes went wide. "Oh my god! I'm so sorry. I'll talk to her and demand that she stays away from you and Lucas."
"See, I told you that she was plotting something," Sam said as she approached the table. She looked over the options and grabbed a bag of chips. "You should listen to me more often." Her sister just gave her a look as she disappeared into the crowd.
Haley tried not to smile. "You have your hands full with her, don't you?"
Brooke laughed. "Yeah, I feel like Julian and I are raising her more than our parents are." She went back on topic. "But I'm serious. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that. I assure you that she won't bother you guys again."
"It's okay. It's not the first time Lucas had to deal with a parent like that," Haley said. "Don't worry about it. Let's just focus on having a fun time tonight. Peyton promised to be on her best behavior, and I'll make sure Owen knows his job isn't to harass Lucas."
Brooke smiled at her gratefully as they left the table. Haley dashed off to find Owen while Brooke went to call Rachel to check on Ethan one last time before the concert started. The phone call was short as Rachel assured her that they were both having fun and she promised to call her if there was an emergency.
Brooke let out another heavy sigh. It was not the right time to tell her best friend about the drama that was sure to unfold tonight. But maybe she was overthinking it. Maybe the concert would go smoothly without any more drama.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the announcement that Mia was about to go on stage for her first set, and Brooke went to find Julian and her friends.
They happily watched the concert from backstage, and Mia came to talk to them during her breaks. They were having a great time that they didn't even care that they were being closely watched by Peyton and Owen. Haley and the Scott brothers made sure Peyton didn't get anywhere near Brooke, Julian or Sam. Nathan stayed with Julian while Haley was with Sam and Brooke. Lucas went back and forth between the two groups.
During a break in between sets, Brooke excused herself to go to the restroom. Once she was finished, she walked out of the stall and went to the sink to wash her hands. As she was finishing up, she could hear high heels clacking on the floor.
Brooke glanced up at the reflection in the mirror. "Alex? I didn't know you were interested in Mia Catalano. Are you here because you heard Julian was coming?"
"No, I'm here because Chase got us tickets," Alex said as she went to the sink next to Brooke. "We both know I'm not interested in Julian." She began to touch up her make-up. "But I hear there's a quite bit of a love triangle backstage."
Brooke tried not to laugh. "Whatever rumors or gossip you've heard, it's not true. Lucas and I aren't interested in each other. I'm just allowing him to get to know his son. That's all. And Owen and I are not getting back together again."
"So is there a reason why you're not letting him see Ethan?" Alex asked. "Because it's really not fair that you're allowing Lucas to see him, but not Owen. I know he hasn't been around for the last two months, but it's really not his fault. And he still cares about you and Ethan."
Brooke didn't answer as she grabbed her purse and marched out of the restroom. After a few minutes, she was able to find Julian and Nathan. She plastered a fake smile on her face. "Do you mind if I borrow Julian for a moment?" she asked.
Nathan nodded and Brooke pulled him down the hall. She took off the fake smile and glared at Julian. "I just ran into Alex in the restroom, and she expressed her opinion about Lucas and Owen. Did you tell Alex about why Owen and I broke up?" she asked. "Because I really don't appreciate everyone gaining up on me."
Julian gave her a look. "No, of course not," he said. "I know how much it means to you to keep it private. It was probably Chase who told her. After all, he's Owen's roommate. He's probably the one who told Owen about Lucas too." There was a short pause. "I know it's none of my business, but I think you should talk to him." Brooke was silent. "It's been two months since your break up, and it's clear that he still wants to be part of Ethan's life. So why don't you let him? I'm sure you can find a schedule that works for everybody."
Brooke sighed. "I know, but I don't want to get Ethan's hopes up that his parents are getting back together. Or that I'm interested in making a new family with his new daddy. He's only three-and-a-half, and I don't want him to get hurt again."
Julian embraced her in a tight hug. "I know you don't, but I think you should give both of them a chance to prove themselves. Maybe they will surprise you."
Someone cleared their throat behind them and they turned around to see Peyton. She had another smirk on her face. "You know, I didn't have a chance to meet all of my guests earlier. I know you're Brooke Davis." She glanced at Julian. "Who do we have here? Your current boyfriend? Because you've already screwed the bouncer and my fiancé."
Brooke glared at her. "What the hell is your problem?"
Peyton didn't hold back on how angry she was. "My problem is that I had to postpone my wedding because we found out that my future husband already had a wife and son," she spat. "And we have to wait another year to start our life together because you didn't tell him about your little one night stand and annul the marriage right away. But you were ready to tell him about his son, and you had to do it days before our wedding. It's really ironic that you design wedding dresses when you have destroyed a bride's wedding day. You should be ashamed of yourself."
Brooke was ready to counter an attack, but Julian pulled her away. "Tonight's not the night to do it. Besides, she's not worth it."
The three Scotts hurried over to them, hoping to diffuse the situation. Lucas realized it was the perfect time to confront Peyton.
Lucas marched over to Peyton as he pulled her out in the hall. He didn't want her to cause another scene. "Ok, what the hell is wrong with you?" he demanded. He crossed his arms. "Look, I know you're pissed off at me and Haley, but please don't take it out on Brooke."
Peyton rolled her eyes. "Spare me the lecture. I already got one from Haley. Tell me something I don't know."
Lucas let out a heavy sigh. "Look, I know this isn't easy for you. It isn't easy for me either. Do you think I want to be away from you? I'd love to be in Savannah with you as husband and wife, but I have a chance here to get to know my son. Don't you remember when you found Ellie?" There was silence from Peyton. The anger on her face disappeared. "I'm just a dad who wants a relationship with his son. As soon as things settle down, we'll get back on track and start planning our wedding again."
Peyton finally spoke. Her voice softened. "You promise that there's no attraction to Brooke, and you just want to get to know your son?"
Lucas nodded. "I just want to get to know Ethan," he said, repeating the words for the final time.
