EXT. CENTRAL PARK - EARLY AFTERNOON*
A couple of weeks have passed since Sam returned to Lima, and now he and Mercedes are reunited in New York, walking hand in hand through Central Park. The weather is warm, and the park is bustling with people enjoying the sunshine. They stroll along a tree-lined path, the canopy of leaves providing dappled shade. The air is filled with the sounds of laughter, the chirping of birds, and the distant strumming of a street musician's guitar.
Mercedes swings their intertwined hands gently, a contented smile on her face. She glances at Sam, who looks equally happy to be by her side.
"I can't believe Rachel is throwing a Tony party," Mercedes says, her voice full of excitement. "It's going to be amazing. I mean, she's been dreaming about this for so long."
Sam nods, his gaze focused on the path ahead. "Yeah, it's going to be a big deal. She's worked so hard for this. I'm happy for her."
Mercedes squeezes his hand a little tighter. "It'll be in a month and a half. Do you think you'll be able to make it?"
Sam sighs softly, a hint of regret in his eyes. "I wish I could, but school will be back in session by then. I'll be in Lima, and it's tough to get away once the semester starts."
Mercedes nods, understanding but disappointed. "I get it. It's just... I really wanted us to go together. To tell everyone about us. I think it's time."
Sam stops walking and turns to face her, his expression serious but tender. "I know. I want that too. But maybe we shouldn't make the announcement at Rachel's party. It's her big day, and I don't want to take any attention away from her."
Mercedes considers this, nodding slowly. "You're right. She deserves to have all the spotlight. Maybe we can just tell a few close friends, keep it low-key."
Sam smiles, relieved. "That sounds like a good plan. We can tell Kurt and Blaine, maybe Tina and Artie. They'll understand."
Mercedes smiles back, feeling a weight lift off her shoulders. "Yeah, that sounds perfect. We'll still be able to share our news, but without overshadowing Rachel's moment."
They start walking again, their pace slow and leisurely. Sam looks around, taking in the vibrant life of the park. "It's been so nice being here with you. These moments are what I look forward to. Even if we have to spend some time apart, it makes these times together even more special."
Mercedes feels a swell of emotion at his words. She leans her head against his shoulder as they walk. "I know what you mean. It's not always easy, but it's worth it."
Sam nods, a small smile playing on his lips. "Definitely worth it. And who knows? Maybe I can surprise you at the party. Stranger things have happened."
Mercedes laughs, the sound light and joyful. "I'd love that. But even if you can't, just knowing we're in this together makes everything better."
They walk in comfortable silence for a few minutes, the rhythm of their steps in sync. Mercedes watches as a group of children run past, chasing a colorful kite that flutters in the breeze. The sight brings a smile to her face, and she turns to Sam, seeing a similar expression mirrored in his eyes.
As they continue their stroll, the topic shifts back to their plans. "So, how do you think everyone will react?" Mercedes asks, a hint of curiosity and nerves in her voice.
Sam chuckles softly. "I think they'll be happy for us. Surprised, maybe, but happy. They've always been supportive."
Mercedes nods, feeling reassured. "Yeah, you're right. It's just a big step. But I'm ready. I want everyone to know how much you mean to me."
Sam stops again and gently pulls her closer, wrapping an arm around her waist. "You mean everything to me, Mercedes. And I want the world to know it too."
They share a tender kiss, the kind that speaks volumes without needing words. When they part, they continue their walk, both feeling more certain and confident about their decision.
TONY'S DAY
Mercedes, Blaine, Kurt, Artie, and Tina stepped out of their taxis and gathered on the bustling sidewalk outside Rachel's apartment. The city lights cast a warm glow, reflecting their excitement as they exchanged hugs and laughter. The air was filled with a sense of anticipation for Rachel's Tony party, and they couldn't wait to celebrate with her.
As they approached the entrance, Blaine, who was always in the loop, couldn't resist sharing a tidbit of gossip. "Hey, did you guys hear? Sam has a new girlfriend. Second one this month," he said, his tone playful and teasing.
Mercedes, walking a step behind, felt a smile tugging at her lips. She decided to drop a hint. "Oh, really?" she said, her voice light with amusement. "Then how come he keeps texting me?"
Kurt laughed, raising an eyebrow. "Why are you and Sam messaging so much?"
Mercedes just smiled mysteriously, saying nothing. Blaine's curiosity was piqued. "Yeah, why is Sam texting you so much?" he pressed.
With a sly grin, Mercedes replied, "No reason."
Tina, watching Mercedes closely, saw something in her friend's eyes. "Mercedes," she said slowly, a knowing smile spreading across her face, "are you and Sam...?"
Mercedes's smile widened, her silence speaking volumes.
Blaine's eyes lit up with realization. "You are!" he exclaimed. "You and Sam are dating!"
Mercedes laughed, her heart swelling with joy at their reactions. "Yes, we are," she admitted. "We've been seeing each other for a few months now. We wanted to keep it low-key at first, but things have been going really well."
Blaine chuckled, shaking his head. "I knew something was up. Sam sounded strange on the phone when we chatted. Now it all makes sense."
Kurt's eyes sparkled with excitement as he pulled Mercedes into a hug. "Mercedes, that's wonderful! Why didn't you tell us sooner?"
Tina grinned, hugging Mercedes next. "I'm so happy for you, Mercedes! This is amazing news."
Artie wheeled closer, giving Mercedes a high-five. "Congrats, Mercedes! That's fantastic."
Mercedes felt a rush of warmth and happiness, surrounded by her friends' support and excitement. "Thanks, guys. But let's keep it between us for now. I don't want to take away from Rachel's big moment. Today is all about her."
They nodded in agreement, their excitement tempered with understanding. Blaine placed a hand on Mercedes's shoulder. "Of course, Mercedes. We won't say a word."
With their secret safe and their spirits high, they turned to enter Rachel's apartment, ready to celebrate the night with their friends while holding onto their sweet revelation.
After the Tony Awards, Rachel and Jesse's apartment was filled with laughter, music, and the jubilant energy of celebration. The evening had been a resounding success, and now their friends gathered around, toasting to Rachel's incredible achievement. Mercedes, Blaine, Kurt, Artie, and Tina mingled, their earlier excitement still palpable.
As the night wore on, Rachel announced, "Everyone, gather around! Mr. Schu wants to FaceTime us!"
Everyone crowded around Rachel and Jesse, eagerly waiting for the call to connect. The screen lit up, and there were Mr. Schuester's familiar, smiling face along with Emma and, to everyone's surprise, Sam.
"Hey, everyone!" Mr. Schuester's voice came through, filled with pride and excitement. "Congratulations, Rachel! We're all so proud of you."
Emma chimed in, "You were amazing, Rachel! We watched every second."
Sam, standing a bit to the side, gave a small wave and said, "Congratulations, Rachel. You did an amazing job."
As soon as Sam appeared on the screen, Mercedes felt her heart skip a beat. A blush crept up her cheeks, and she smiled softly, her eyes lighting up. She tried to focus on the conversation, but her thoughts kept drifting back to Sam. She wondered if he noticed her reaction, if he felt the same flutter of excitement seeing her as she did seeing him.
Blaine, noticing her reaction, nudged Kurt and whispered something, both of them sharing a knowing look. Mercedes felt their eyes on her but didn't mind. Her thoughts were elsewhere, replaying the brief moment when Sam's gaze had met hers on the screen.
"Sam! It's great to see you," Kurt called out, giving Mercedes a quick glance.
"Yeah, we miss you here," Tina added, her tone playful.
Rachel, caught up in the moment, didn't notice the subtle exchange. "Thank you so much, Mr. Schu. It means the world to me that you all watched."
Mercedes stayed close to the screen, her gaze fixed on Sam. Her mind raced with thoughts of their recent conversations, the texts that had brought them closer. She felt a warmth spread through her, knowing that even across the distance, they were connected.
Mr. Schuester, oblivious to the undercurrent, continued, "We just wanted to call and say how proud we are of all of you. It's moments like these that remind us of how far we've come together."
Emma smiled warmly. "And to see you all there, supporting each other, it's truly heartwarming."
Rachel beamed, her eyes misting over. "Thank you, Mr. Schu, Emma, Sam. This means so much to me."
Throughout the call, Mercedes couldn't help stealing glances at Sam. Every time their eyes met, a smile would bloom on both their faces, a silent exchange of shared happiness and affection.
Rachel, ever observant, noticed their interactions. She exchanged a quick glance with Jesse, then cleared her throat with a playful grin. "So, Sam," she began, catching Sam's attention, "how are things with you and Mercedes?"
Mercedes and Sam both sat up straight, their eyes widening in surprise. How did she know? Mercedes felt her face flush, and she glanced nervously at the screen, where Sam was doing the same.
Mercedes felt her cheeks flush as all eyes turned to her and Sam. Sam's expression softened, and he glanced at Mercedes with a fond smile. "Um, yeah," he started, his voice warm, "really well."
Mr. Schuester, beaming and surprised. "Wait, what?! You guys are together?!"
Mercedes nodded, her smile growing wider. "Yes, we are."
Sam sighed, a small smile playing at his lips. "We were going to wait until after tonight to tell everyone."
Kurt chuckled, stepping closer to the screen. "Well, some of us already knew," he admitted, glancing at Mercedes with a wink.
Rachel's smile softened. "I'm really happy for you two. This is wonderful news."
Mercedes felt a rush of emotions—joy, relief, and a touch of embarrassment. "Thanks, Rachel. We just didn't want to take away from your big night."
Rachel shook her head. "Nonsense, Mercedes. This is a night of celebration for all of us. Your happiness only adds to it."
Mr. Schuester beamed. "This is fantastic! Sam, Mercedes, I'm so happy for you both."
Emma nodded in agreement. "You two make a wonderful couple."
The screen showed Sam smiling warmly, looking directly at Mercedes. "Thanks, everyone. It means a lot to us."
