Hey guys! guess who's back with the first official chapter!
I know right? it's weird to have me update more than once a year on this thing!
*puts hand to chin* although I guess this is technically the 2024 update while the last one was in 2023, but you know what I mean!
Regardless, thank you all who have followed and favorited this story. I'm very excited for the direction this is going to take and hopefully so are you. and with that said, lets get into it.
this is...
Marvelous Remnants-Volume 1: Along Came a Spider!
Chapter 1: A Not so Normal day!
New York: early December.
Why couldn't there ever be a normal day in New York? Some boring classes, relaxing stroll through Central Park, maybe a few thugs to take down on patrol and turn into front page news? Was that too much for Peter to ask?
No, instead the great Parker luck decided he doesn't have enough on his plate, and unleashed a newly freed supervillain on ESU and the Conners.
"AGH!" Spider-Man cried out, Doc Ock ramming him, back first into the main desk.
"While I'm not one for the brutish methods of O'hirn and Marko" the claws of two left tentacles rotated with the whirr of a buzz saw "I will admit this is quite cathartic."
His arms surged forward, only to be tangled in a web line as Spider-Man grabbed and slammed them into the table, which splintered instantly. The hero jumped back to the nearby wall. "Sorry Doc, carpentry is in the next building over. And classes don't start till tomorrow."
"Then I will settle for entomology. First assignment: your dissection!" Octavius declared, his prosthetics cracking the concrete as he struck. Spider-Man nimbly maneuvered under and over the twisting tentacles.
"You know, I expected that kinda line from electro or vulture, but you?" Peter mocked, managing to catch doc in the face with a web. With the villain blinded and pulling at the compound, Spider-Man shot another line at the ceiling and swung forward. "Entomology is insects, not arachnids! I know you're better than that."
And just as he got the blinds off, Octopus was kicked straight in the chest sending him flying into the next room with a loud crash.
Though as much as he wanted to follow, Peter had to make sure his friends were safe. Without missing a beat, he zipped back to the main office. "Not exactly a great college tour so far is it?"
When they realized it was him, the door pushed open to reveal Martha and Curt Conners, their son Billy, and his friends/former bully, Gwen Stacy, MJ, and Flash Thompson.
"What happened to Doc Ock?" MJ scanned the room.
"And where's Peter!?" Gwen questioned hurriedly.
"Already got your friend outside. Took a big hit, but he's safe. As for the good doctor, just threw him into the observation area." The hero answered. His friends relaxed just a little as Spider-Man turned to the two scientists, taking the time to reload his web shooters. "So, while I serve up some high iron calamari, any idea why a mechanized octopus is tearing through your lab?"
"We know why he's here, and you're gonna need our help with this one." Curt answered, not moving an inch.
"Not a good idea, I need to get you to safety." The arachnid vehemently denied.
But Gwen stood her ground alongside her boss, glaring. "Spider-Man, he's after an experimental particle accelerator!" She argued.
"A what?!" Peters eyes widened under the mask. "Where'd you get the funding for that?"
"We didn't. The accelerator's on loan from Stark Industries." Martha answered, a protective hand on their son. "Design specs are based on the arc reactor. We thought studying it would help find a way to siphon off Electro's bio-energy, but if Octavius gets his hands on it-"
"Then they could use it for the exact opposite, and the sinister six gets a huge power up." The heroes eyes narrowed, realizing the severity of the situation.
Curt looked between his wife and assistant. "We've been studying the tech, Martha, Gwen, and myself. If anyone can safely shut it down, it's the three of us."
Never before had Peter despised the loss of his old lab job so much. It didn't look like there was a choice. "Alright, fine. But we're doing this my way. I'll keep the good doctor busy. You sneak in, grab the accelerator, and get out." The hero emphasized.
"MJ, Flash, the two of you take Billy and call the police." Martha nodded.
"What?! No!" The boy turned on his mother and father, tears at the corners of his eyes. "Last time something like this happened, dad almost got stuck as the lizard!"
"Wait what?"
"That was you?!" MJ narrowed her eyes in confusion while Flash was close to having his bug out of his head.
Ignoring the unintended reveal, Curt and Martha put a hand on each of his shoulders. "We'll be ok. promise." She whispered softly.
And with one last reassuring hug, the family separated. "Go."
The group split, and the moment the trio stepped outside, MJ's hands were already flying over her phone. A few minutes later, police units were on their way. (It's helps when your friend is a police captain's daughter).
With the authorities on their way, Flash turned his attention back to the kid. "So what was that about your dad being the lizard?"
When the young Connors didn't respond, MJ and flash turned around scanning the campus for the boy. "Billy?" She called out.
A second later, the two heard a creaking sound, seeing the door to the lab swing closed.
"Ah crapbaskets!"
Meanwhile, Spider-Man and the others had made their way to the observation room, the hero taking the lead as everyone crowded behind one of the displays as they watched the villain.
Dr. Octavius was currently tearing through the lab bit by bit, his metallic limbs weaving around tables and lab equipment before tossing pieces aside. "I know it's here somewhere."
The problem was, even if Ock didn't see it, he was standing right between them and the accelerator.
The device itself didn't look all that special. A white cylinder barely under a foot in height with a glass band wrapped around the display at the top. A small key pad was build into the side, right next to a wire port that connected it to a desktop computer. Opposite that was the classic Stark industries logo in black.
"Uh, I'm no expert, but isn't a particle accelerator supposed to be… you know, the size of a building?" Spidey poked his head out to eye the device skeptically.
Martha waved him off. "That's a misconception. Depending on the type, modern accelerators can be smaller than a quarter."
"Can we argue the science later!? You know when we're not trying to sneak around a monster octopus!?" Gwen whisper yelled.
"Right, sorry!" The hero nodded, scanning the lab again. "I'll cause a distraction on the far side of the lab."
In one fluid motion, Spider-Man leapt off the floor and landed in a crouch on the ceiling, silently crawling along until he reached one of the balconies to get closer.
"Psst!"
Curt's head whipped around, hearing a noise from around the corner. And there stood the jock and the redhead looking between them and the villain.
"What are you guys doing?! Get Billy and get out of here!" Curt reprimanded as quietly as possible while they moved closer.
"We tried, but he snuck back in while we called the police!" MJ warned as they dove to the shared hiding place.
"What?!"
*clatter.*
The entire group could feel their hearts stop. Wherever that noise came from, it was close.
"Hm?" Octavius raised a brow, turning to Curt's desk at the side of the room. A few pens had rolled onto the floor. Unseen by him, Billy's heart pounded like a jackhammer behind his office chair, growing louder and faster with every clang and clash of his claws.
So much for plan A. Seeing this happen, Spider-Man was about to jump out and get the villains attention, when-
*squeak*
A few of the Connors lab mice and lizards scampered across the room, having escaped their now destroyed enclosures.
"Vermin." Octavius sneered and turned back around to continue his search.
With the doc occupied, Spider-Man waved his arm and motioned back to the Conners parents. Come on Billy. I can't protect you and stop Mr. Cephalopod at the same time.
The kid nodded at the hero before silently grabbing something from the desk and waiving it at him.
Peter could only raise a brow… until masked eyes finally found the peculiarly shaped device everyone was worried about. Not bad kid. Spider-Man could practically see his good idea bulb as he gave a thumbs up.
Without another word, the young Connors lightly tossed the object and moved back with everyone else, a light thwip barely reaching his ears.
"What were you thinking!" Martha quietly reprimanded, she and Curt embracing their son.
"Ah, there." Octavius spoke up before Billy could answer, and the entire group froze. Flash cautiously peeked out from behind the desk. The villains eyes were locked on the accelerator. "A gem among the putrid scrap."
The arachnid had to move. Now!
"Gangway! Coming through!" He called out, diving and weaving through the mechanical arms before snatching the device off the table and landing on the far wall.
"Spider-Man!"
While the Dr. Snarled, said hero turned the device over in his hand. "Y'know doc, if I had a nickel for every time I beat you to a prototype energy device, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice."
Just as his arms reached their target, Spidey planted his feet and used them as a springboard vaulting, clean over him. Landing almost silently on Dr. Conner's desk, Peter paused for a split second, and started swinging back to the other room. The doctor was right on his tail.
"Dammit! We missed our chance!"
Curt placed a reassuring hand on his wife's shoulder. "We did the best we could. All that's left for us to do is clear out and hope Spider-Man can handle it." With the pair gone everyone emerged from their hiding place, watching the battle move closer to the exit.
Everyone that is, except for the youngest member moving back to the main desk. "Billy, where are you going?!"
"Getting the accelerator!"
"They have the accelerator!"
"No they don't. That was the thermos from my lunch!" Billy smiled, making his way towards the desk… And there sat the real accelerator, sitting safely next to Curt's computer. "Spidey pulled a bait and switch!"
Everyone was left gaping at the machine I'm delighted shock. Curt ruffled his sons hair in pride. "Way to go Billy!"
The sound of sirens approaching was met with victorious grins, Gwen signaling the group. "And that's our cue. Come on!"
The group all followed close behind her, headed straight for the exit.
*crash!* *rumble!*
"Woah!" The entire group froze. A massive impact from the fight shook the building, and Curt watched as the ceiling above them began to creak and shift. "Watch your heads!" Grabbing their son, Martha and Curt dove straight under the desk, while Flash, MJ, and Gwen hid in a nearby broom closet doorframe.
The next few moments were filled with the sound of metal shifting and stone cracking. Dust poured down in small bursts until the lab finally went still.
"Jesus Christ." Flash clutched his chest, peeking through the doorway. "All this fighting must be destabilizing the building."
"Even more reason to get out of here. Let's go!" MJ started towards the back exit, but when she turned the corner, everyone stopped dead in their tracks by a massive pile of support beams and stones. "Dammit, the hallway's blocked off!"
Curt turned towards the direction they came from. "The only other exit is straight past them."
*rumble*
A second shockwave. MJ, Flash, and Martha braced an arm against the wall, while Curt did his best to keep his balance and support Billy. Gwen scanned the ceiling, seeing cracks starting to forms. "It's either that or get crushed" she warned, mustering all the confidence she could. "Come on."
Back in the entrance hall, Peter was running up the wall quite literally, nimbly avoiding the destroyed terrariums being thrown at him. The 'particle accelerator' had been slung around his shoulder with a web like a computer bag. Just gotta keep the good doctor busy long enough for them to get out.
"So level with me doc who are ya getting this for?" *crumble!* a tentacle rammed through the wall where Parker had been a second ago, as he swung to the center of the room.
"Yourself? You don't really need anything beyond the harness and it's power pack." *crash!* one desk hit another, and Spidey narrowly avoided the two tables sent flying across the room.
"Electro? He's still behind bars after the sinister 6 fiasco." *shing* Peter twirled in midair avoiding a slash from his claws.
"Or is there someone else you're trying to impress? Maybe a Mrs. Octopus?" The hero smirked. He was feet from the door. Just a little more.
*slash!* changing tactics, octopus cut his web-line mid swing. "Gah!" Spider-Man skidded along the tile floor before Octavius grabbed him by the arms and suspended the hero before him.
"The nature of my need for this device is of no importance." *snap* auto grabbed the device, breaking the webs holding it in two. "Not any longer." He grinned in satisfaction.
A look that only lasted a few seconds before being replaced by complete outrage. "What?! Where's the accelerator!" Otto demanded, staring face to face with the hero.
"Don't ask me!" With a swift kick, Spider-Man knocked open the thermos, splashing its contents all over Octavius face. "You're the one getting so worked up over alphabet soup." Swinging himself forward, web head used his momentum to wrench his hand free and deliver a cross right to the scientist's jaw.
Octopus stumbled backwards, using his sleeve to clear the warm reddish liquid from his face, now marred with an annoyed scowl. "You'll pay for this indignity!"
"No thanks. I always preferred chicken noodle." Spidey tried to jump away, but before he could get another word in, one of doc's arms snagged Peter by the ankle!
In their mad dash for the entrance, Billy and co passed by just in time to see the arachnid get rag-dolled into a wall. He slumped to the floor in a moaning daze. "Spider-Man!"
Octavius's head snapped towards the boy, who flinched in fear as the entire group froze.
"You wretched brat! Give me that!" The villain charged across the room.
"Claws off the kid!" Thinking fast, Stacy grabbed a tool cart and rammed it as hard as she could into the villain. Octavius stumbled while MJ tackled Billy out of the way.
In frustration, Octopus whipped his arm around and bashed Gwen in the side. She crashed into a shelf clutching her rib.
"Gwen!" Curt called out in fear.
"I'll get her! You guys go!" MJ picked herself and Billy up before starting towards her friend.
"Come on." Martha grabbed her son's arm and started running, putting as much distance between them and the villain as possible. Only problem was that took the family further from the door.
And the situation was only getting worse. "The accelerator, I dropped it!"
Seeing the redhead helping geekette, and the Connors trying to find safety, Eugene quickly scanned the floor, finding the cylinder rolled under the cart. "Got it!" Flash cheered, scooping the device off the ground. But that enthusiasm lasted less than a second when he looked up.
The doc had him cornered. And now he was on his own.
"You again. As I recall, you tried to intervene at Coney Island and had to flee." A sadistic smile lit up his face, mechanical arms coiling. "But now" his black claws flashed in the sunlight, and Flash literally felt his back against the wall. "There's nowhere left to run."
"Agh. Gonna feel that tomorrow." Spider-Man groaned, getting back to his feet. He didn't have a moment to rest, catching view of the action. "Flash!"
QB honed in on the hero, and suddenly, it felt like the entire world slowed down around him. In his mind's eye, Thompson could picture the entire room, a red x appearing over the doc with blue triangles over Spidey and his friends.
It's just like the game! He realized, instinctively taking a stance and scanning the room.
A green arrow traced his path, right between the villains arms.
Blindside blitz. Break the tackle and escape the pocket! Then throw to the L route.
A familiar rush of adrenaline filled his veins as everything sped up again. "Hi-Hi-Hike!"
Eugene dodged left, ducking under a strike that impaled the wall while he surged forward, jumping over an arm threatening to trip him.
"Flash! Are you crazy?!" Gwen's voice was drowned out by the whirring of machinery, two more arms slashing at the athlete.
Pain flared to life across his back and chest, almost making him drop the device, but Thompson pushed through it, shoulder checking Octavius as he ran past.
It had the intended effect. Octavius was thrown off balance and had to use two of his arms to right himself.
And that's all the opening flash needed to slide straight between the other two."Spidey!"
Mid dive, Thompson threw the accelerator, perfect spiral, straight across the lab!
"No!" Just when Ock was about to grab it out of the air, a web line thwipped out of nowhere, snagging the accelerator as Spider-Man swung towards the door. "Nice throw Eugene!"
"I actually did it." The QB whispered in disbelief, slowly rising to his feet.
"Great work Flash! Now let's get out of here!" MJ helped him up before they both took off. Or at least tried to when a black claw wrapped around her waist. "Woah!"
"MJ!" Whether on instinct or fear, Eugene slowed down to try and help her, but now the villain had them.
"I think not." Octavius sneered, ensnaring her and Flash in his grip.
Halfway to the exit, Peter looked back in time to see Gwen and Billy fall to the same fate. "Let them go!" The hero called out as all his friends were rammed and pinned into the wall. All he and the Conners could do was watch in fear.
"Always trying to play the hero." Octavius recalled, absolutely livid now, the two staring each other down waiting for one to make a move. "Hand over the accelerator you pompous excuse for an arachnid, or these four will be torn to shreds."
One by one, the hero looked between the 4, vision settling on Gwen as a lump of white hot emotion burned in his chest.
But Spider-Man knew he couldn't go into this angry. He couldn't put all of them at risk.
Hands raised, Spider-Man hopped back to the ground. "Alright, stop. Just don't hurt them."
"If that is your wish, then set it down. Slowly." Octavius demanded, his claws brushing against Flash's neck.
Peter complied inching slowly towards the floor, all the while waiting for the slightest opening. Gonna need both hands for this.
And whaddya know, Gwen managed to give him just that. With the two distracted, she noticed a bright light shining against the prosthetic. Looking down to the source, she found broken mirror resting in the rubble at her feet.
And they were right under the skylight!
Trying to stay as subtle as possible, Stacy lightly brushed her toes against the shards, watching as the light trailed ever so slowly up his arms until.
"Urgh." The light reflected right in his eyes, and the villain was blinded, shielding his eyes.
In that split second, Spider-Man threw the accelerator, and used four web lines to grab his arms, two slinging from each wrist.
The tug of war forced his friends to be let go, much to Octavius's displeasure, and once they were back on the ground, Peter jumped high and used his tethers as a makeshift slingshot. The arachnid hero's fist slammed straight into the harness and its battery pack with a sound of crumpling metal.
"AUGH!" Now it was the octopus's turn to be rammed into the wall, the force both cracking the concrete and denting his now sparking equipment. The black prosthetics started randomly twitching and whirring with every fiery spray… until they finally went limp.
*shatter*
The accelerator hit the floor a second later, glass display cracked open. But to his shock, Curt saw the control panel light up in a multitude of colors, going from yellow, to black, to white, to red.
"Everyone in one piece?" Spider-Man checked on his friends.
"I think so." MJ sighed in equal parts exhaustion and relief.
"Nice work with that mirror Gwen." Flash acknowledged. And to her surprise… the compliment actually seemed genuine.
All of them started backing away from Doc, with Martha reassuring her son… but the feeling among the group was short lived. "Spider-Man! The accelerator!" Curt warned.
When everyone locked eyes on it, they saw the same lights beginning to speed up, flashing even brighter. "No- no- you incompetent fools! It's overloading!" Octavius backed away in fear.
That can't be good. Web head raced for the device, but just as he touched the controls, a massive electric spark arced through the air and caught him just below his eye!
"Gah!" Everyone flinched in shock. Spider-Man jumped back forced to rip off his now smoldering mask.
But no one paid him any mind as the building started to shake…. And seemed to grow worse with the changing colors.
Definitely not good.
"Uh, that's not an earthquake, is it?" MJ whispered, as everyone felt their stomachs drop.
A dome of multicolored energy began expanding out from the device, covering inches, then a foot, and seeming to expand faster as it grew!
"Run!"
Who said it, no one knew, or cared. All that mattered was they were all bolting straight for the exit, fast as possible. But no one gained any distance, just kept pace with the reaction. And it was still getting faster.
*CRACK*
Gwen felt her heart stop as she looked up. The ceiling above had caved. A literal ton of concrete headed was headed right for her!
"Look out!"
Without a second thought, Spider-Man changed course, the dome right on top of him when they collided, pushing his best friend out of the way. A rainbow of energy expanded over them. He felt the rubble impact his back-
-their eyes met, and everything around the pair seemed to disappear in a colorful blur.
"Peter?" Gwen breathed in shock. Eventually, the pigmented tornado completely overtook her vision.
And in a split second, everything went black.
Vale: Early December.
A gentle breeze flowed over crimson trees, carrying with it a crisp winter chill. It may have been called "the forever fall", but autumn was quickly ending in Vale.
Not that Qrow Branwen had much of a problem with the cold. When your magical animal transformation literally covers you in downy feathers, staying warm tends to get easier.
But there was a reason birds flew south, and no matter how much he hated it, Qrow wasn't sure he could follow the lead he was on much farther.
Dammit. If we get snow this early in the year, tracking Amber's attackers will be 10 times harder.
That was just his luck, wasn't it? 2 minutes too late to save his friend, and still too far behind to track the would be murderers. It was an endless game of cat and mouse, and at this point, the huntsman had to wonder which parts they were playing.
Best head back and call it a day. Resume the search tomorrow.
Or at least that was the plan, until a blinding light forced him to roost in a high branch.
"What the-". He returned to human form, shielding his eyes. Between fingers, Qrow spotted what could only be described as a growing dome of light about a mile away. But just as quickly as it appeared, the luminous sphere shrank back down into nothingness below the treetops.
"Rainbow colored energy ball. Well that's not ominous." he sighed. Through his experience, an unknown sighting in the wilderness was always a sign of fortune, whether good or bad.
….And knowing me….
The huntsman jumped down to the undergrowth, and for better or worse, ran through the trees.
When Gwen's eyes fluttered open, head pounding, she found herself awash in a sea of scarlet blanketing an entire forest.
Well, the entire forest, save for a few massive concrete boulders. Clutching her temple as she sat up, bits and pieces of her workplace lay broken and scattered around the lush underbrush.
The memories of the lab came flooding back to her. In an instant Gwen was up, frantically clawing and overturning any piece of rock she could find. "Peter?!"
A muffled groan from the left, and her gaze met MJ's, as she rubbed the back of her head. It was hard to tell among all the scarlets and crimsons, but she might have been bleeding.
"Kids!" Martha appeared from around the corner, kneeling to examine the redhead. "Are you ok?"
"I-I'm not sure" MJ looked around in confusion. "Am I concussed or are we suddenly in a red forest?"
"I doubt we're all seeing things." Martha admitted, taking in the strange sight.
"Mom! Dad!" A panicked cry shook them out of their stupor.
"Billy!?" Curt screamed in the distance.
"Hang on!" And suddenly, every one of them was racing through the forest.
"He's hurt!" A feeling of absolute dread settled in Gwen's heart as she picked up more speed, zipping around every tree and rock as fast as she could.
And when she reached the small clearing, her worst fears were realized. While Billy himself seemed to come out unscathed… the same couldn't be said for the mass of red and blue resting under a massive rock.
Gwen felt like she was gonna be sick. The only thing that kept her moving forward was the soft moan coming from the pile of rubble. Please! You have to be ok!
Flash and the others reached them just a few seconds later, and the very sight shocked them to their core. "Spider-man?!"
"Spider-man!"
Stacy was already pushing against the stone with everything she had, but despite herself, the damn thing wouldn't even budge.
"Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey!" Flash had to physically pull the blonde away so she didn't hurt herself.
"All together!" "One! Two! Three!" Gwen could feel her muscles screaming in agony, even with everyone working together. Her body ached, but somehow they managed to lift the concrete just enough for Curt to grab his arm and pull Spider-Man out.
The Conners were by his side in an instant, turning him over to check his injuries… and they let out a sharp gasp seeing his face.
"Tiger?" MJ brought a hand over her mouth, a nauseous and horrified recognition settling in the pit of her stomach.
"No way." Flash went pale as a ghost, his arms hanging limply at his sides.
Tears streamed down Gwen's face. There, head resting in a pool of his own blood was her best friend.
Working through the shock, Curt and Martha immediately set about, the former tearing off his unused lab coat sleeve to keep pressure on his injury, while the latter kept track of his breathing and pulse.
And the Connors Matriarch was unnerved at how weak and shallow both were. "This isn't good."
In desperation, Flash reached for his cell, but the image on screen almost made him throw it aside. "Shit, no cell signal! Where the hell are we?"
A blur of movement caught MJ's eye in the distance, and when she turned around, she at first thought a big bird was heading towards their direction.
… but it wasn't… it was a person!
"H-hey?! HEY! OVER HERE!" She waived her arms, desperately trying to get the man's attention.
Flash and Gwen were quick to join in when they saw him, the latter crying out the loudest. "WE NEED HELP!"
"Dammit!" Spotting them, the man cursed under his breath and raced towards the group. He pulled out his scroll, hand flying over the numbers. "This is pro huntsman Qrow Branwen! License number 87425! I need immediate medical evac! We got a group of civi's four male three female. One injured and unconscious."
He didn't kneel so much as rocker slide, stopping right next to Martha and carefully examined his head. "Concussion and cranial bleeding. Looks like some kind of explosion set off a rock slide."
"Copy that Branwen! We've triangulated your position and got a bird headed your way! ETA 10 minutes."
"They won't make it in time." Curt realized solemnly before turning away.
"Peter wake up! Please Pete you have to wake-" hearing that was the straw that broke Gwen, breaking down in MJ's arms while Flash rested a hand on her shoulder.
Qrow watched the group around him. They're all panicking. If the Grimm rear their head none of us will get out of here.
Branwen glanced down at the kid. From the look of it, he couldn't have been much older than his niece. An image of her silver eyes in place of Peters brown left the huntsman clenching his fist so hard it drew blood.
Or it would have… except for one little magic trick, literally up his sleeve as his arm glowed red. Not supposed to do this for civilians, but it looks like I got no choice. It might be his only chance.
Steeling his resolve, Qrow quickly shifted positions, one hand resting on Peter's shoulder, while the other lay on his chest, just above his heart.
Gwen watched him through tear stained eyes. "What are you doing?" she choked out.
But the scythe user ignored her words… And suddenly, his entire body glowed maroon. The New Yorkers could only watch in as much fascination as hope.
"For it is in passing that we achieve immortality." He chanted. "Through this, we become a paragon of virtue and glory to rise above all. Infinite in distance and unbound by death, I release your soul, and by my shoulder, protect thee."
When Peter inhaled sharply, Gwen couldn't hold back a sob. Color started to return to Parker's face, and more than just the strange crimson energy now enveloping him.
Qrow could feel the strain from unlocking his aura, but it was worth it seeing tension and fear drain from the rest of the group like a sieve as the kids soul worked its magic.
"He'll be alright." The reaper smiled at Gwen, who looked up at him through tear stained eyes. "Aura is already starting to heal his injuries."
"Thank you."
It was then that Gwen finally got a good look at the man. He was a little thin, but strong, standing just a few inches taller than Curt. He had a small amount of stubble lining his angular jaw, and his dark black hair had just a few thin lines of grey.
A color that was matched by his outfit. He wore a pair of black jeans and sneakers, while his shirt and overcoat were white and grey respectively, with a black collar and cuffs. And for some reason he seemed to be wearing a maroon red cape, along with a strange device hanging on the back of his hip that looked like some kind of high tech sword.
"Any other injuries?" He asked before she could get a better look at it.
For once, Flash was really glad he picked up first aid back in school. He went over to the redhead with his phone and turned on the flashlight.
Realizing what he was going for, MJ turned to face him as he spoke. "A couple scrapes and bruises." He shined the light in her eyes, seeing them dilate normally. "One less severe head injury. Nothing life threatening I think."
With the danger finally subsided, Billy finally allowed himself to take in his surroundings, staring at the forest in wonder. "Who are you? And-and where are we?"
"Name's Qrow Branwen. I'm a pro huntsman. And right now, you're in the Forever Fall, just outside Beacon."
All the group could do was watch the man in confusion. "I'm sorry, where?"
Qrow raised a brow. "Beacon Academy? As in, the biggest Hunter school in Vale?" When all he received were more blank looks, Qrow was left scratching his head. "Ok, how do none of you know the kingdom of Vale?"
"Uh, guys." MJ's voice was shaking, eyes glued to the skies above her. "I don't think we're in Manhattan anymore."
A series of gasps ran through the group. She pointed up at the moon just starting to poke through the clouds. Barely visible through the scarlet canopy, the more it came into view, the more impossible it seemed.
A fraction of the moon itself had been shattered like glass!
The lab accident replayed behind Gwen's eyes as a single, terrifying question made its way to the forefront of everyone's minds. She looked Qrow dead on. "What world are we on?"
The huntsman raised a brow. What world? That had to be a joke right?
But the more he thought about it, the more sense it made. The strange light flash, Peter's weird costume, concrete rubble in the middle of the forest. Her question was stubbornly putting piece after piece together in his mind no matter how unbelievable it seemed.
It was the only explanation…. And the group suddenly felt as if the floor had been pulled out from under them.
They would soon find this a world of heroes and monsters. A world of villains and hunters. A world of new solutions and bloody evolutions.
This world was:
"Remnant." Qrow shook his head in shock. "Why can't there ever be a normal day in Remnant?"
Author's Note: And there it is! The first official chapter of Marvelous Remnants! And on time too! I was really proud of the work I did not just on this chapter, but on some of the upcoming ones as well. Right now most of them are just outlines, but I'm really liking the direction that this story could go. I just need a few more key details to work themselves out and I'll be all set for chapter 2.
Speaking of which, I'm hoping to get the next one out sometime around late February to early March. But in the meantime, as I said before, this story was inspired by The Omni-Remnant and their Ben 10 RWBY crossover. They are a big inspiration for me, and their story is both massive and enthralling. Thank you so much.
With that said, thanks for swinging by guys, and stay safe out there *thwip*
