Chapter 25
Sakura
As Ino, Sakura, and Karin sat at Ichiraku's, the atmosphere became subtly tense. Sakura couldn't hide her annoyance upon realizing that Ino had extended the invitation to Karin as well. Their outing, meant to be a casual get-together, became a delicate dance of emotions and unspoken tensions, with the shadow of Sasuke's presence lingering in the background.
Sakura had long harbored a dislike for Karin, purely rooted in the complex history she shared with Sasuke. Ino had too, but now seemed to apparently accept her company easily enough. The rivalry and emotions tied to their past interactions made it difficult for Sakura to accept Karin's presence, especially when she had just wanted a casual outing with her best friend.
Ino, perhaps oblivious to the underlying tension or acting like it, tried to lighten the mood with casual conversation. "Isn't it great to have a girls' day out? I thought it would be nice for all of us to hang out together."
Sakura tried to force a polite smile, but her annoyance simmered beneath the surface. She couldn't shake the feeling that Ino's invitation to Karin was intentional, as if testing the waters of their complicated dynamics or perhaps to get her claws on some juicy gossip about Sasuke.
Karin, sensing the tension but choosing not to acknowledge it directly, at least not yet, engaged in small talk with them and Ayame behind the counter as well.
"I've heard so much about Ichiraku's ramen from Naruto. He promised to treat me and Sasuke but his mission came up. I'm excited to try it. He might be mad that I tried it out before he could return."
"Oh? You're close with Naruto-kun?" Ayame asked politely, having met Karin the first time and instantly knowing she was new in the village.
"Um. Quite close, you can say. I've seen parts of him very few have, I can say that at least," she giggled suggestively.
Sakura, though outwardly composed, couldn't suppress the unease that brewed within.
And what was that about Naruto? Sakura thought, annoyed. She looked over at Ino and saw her snide grin as well as she looked back at Sakura at the pregnant pause. What, now Ino and Karin will have inside jokes? Her frustration kept increasing.
Seizing a moment when Karin engaged in a conversation with Ayame about something in the menu asking if it was spicy enough, Sakura leaned over to Ino and furiously whispered, "Why did you invite her, Ino-pig? Did you suddenly forget we can't stand her?"
Ino, maintaining a nonchalant demeanor, replied in a hushed tone, "Relax, Forehead. I thought it might be a good opportunity for everyone to get along and we might find out more about her. Besides, it's just a casual meetup."
The tension between them remained palpable, but before Sakura could press further, Karin, with a sly smile, turned her attention back to Sakura, seemingly having heard her. "So, Sakura. How have you been?"
"Fine," she grunted as a reply, not caring that she had been a bit loud.
"By the way, Ino and I…" - Sakura huffed angrily once more - "came across a boy earlier with a pretty noticeable bruise on his face. Seemed like he was looking at flowers for you," Karin said, her tone mischievous yet her smile malignant.
Sakura, caught off guard by Karin's unexpected comment, felt a mix of surprise and anger. She couldn't feign ignorance. It dawned on her that the mysterious individual was Yōichi, the boy who had made advances on her when he was intoxicated. The memory of Kiba swiftly intervening and socking Yōichi in the jaw flashed in her mind.
Suppressing her frustration, Sakura maintained a composed facade while inwardly seething. "Why do you care about that?" she snapped.
Ino, with her keen understanding of the situation, couldn't help but conceal another sly smile herself, knowing the implications of the bruised boy's appearance and understanding the reason for Sakura's impromptu meeting in the first place.
"Oh, rumors spread fast, don't they?" Karin continued, her tone playful yet laced with underlying implication. "Boys lining up for you, and even the Hokage himself coming to your defense. You must be quite the center of attention. I was just wondering, is all."
Karin's comment, delivered with a sly smile, cut through the air, adding an extra layer of tension to the already charged atmosphere. Sakura, though accustomed to the complexities of her romantic entanglements, felt a subtle prickle of discomfort at the mention of the Hokage standing up for her, and that Karin of all people knew of it before her. This was news to her herself.
Sakura, choosing her words carefully, responded, "Rumors are just that - rumors. People talk without knowing the full story."
As she grappled with her emotions, she understood why the circumstances would appear curious to an outsider. Surely Yōichi had gone to lodge a complain against her and Kiba. He apparently had a run in directly with Kakashi himself, instead of Shikamaru, whom she remembered had to sign off Temari at dawn so probably started work late.
Despite accepting that Kakashi wanted nothing to do with her, why had he stood up for her in front of Yōichi? Why intervene in a situation that seemingly had nothing to do with him and have people talking when he was so eager to avoid conversation? Why wouldn't he leave her alone? Why must he constantly engage in a battle with her wits?
Ino, sensing the brewing tension, attempted to diffuse the situation, feigning unawareness. "Well, Sakura, it seems you've got your fair share of admirers. Kiba socking up a potential competitor. And the Hokage, no less. That's quite impressive."
"Having multiple men who stand up for you, must be quite appealing," Karin remarked, her words carrying a mocking undertone. "Kiba's the dog one right? I had heard from Naruto that you both broke up and he was dating a 'cat hottie' now. Or, as Naruto had also described, 'me-ow'," she finished.
Sakura was already on edge from the previous remarks. She felt another surge of resentment, this one stronger than the last.
Why did this bitch also keep implying she knew more about Naruto than herself? Despite the fact that they were both Uzumakis, she doubted they even knew each other before Sasuke recruited her in Hebe or Taka or whatever.
"Kiba is a... friend, and he stands up for those he cares about. It's not just about romance," she replied tersely, struggling to conceal her irritation but letting some slip into her tone.
"Well, if someone like Kiba were to stand up for me, I might just drool all over him," Karin, seemingly unfazed, continued. "Just like the big white dog he has that Sasuke once mentioned to me is quite a character. It's very attractive when a guy knows how to defend what he cares about."
Ino, attempting to ease the tension, clapped her hands once. "Come on, let's not turn this into a competition. We're here to enjoy some ramen, right?"
Sakura, sensing the subtle jab, couldn't contain her frustration any longer. "You seem to have a knack for targeting men I've been associated with," she addressed Karin coldly. "It's not a competition, but it's also not a game."
Ayame placed three steaming bowls of ramen in front of them each, feeling the charged air and pretending not to be interested in their conversation as she helped her father.
Karin maintained her coy demeanor and rolled her noodles in her chopstick.
"Oh, Sakura, I'm just making conversation," Karin responded with a casual shrug. "No need to get defensive. I appreciate a good conversation, especially when it's spicy, like this ramen is," she ended, slurping her noodles.
Sakura was visibly frustrated. She quietly slurped some of her own noodles and successfully burnt her tongue in the process.
Attempting to shift the focus away from the palpable tension, Ino decided to redirect the conversation to a seemingly neutral topic. "So, Karin, any exciting adventures with Sasuke lately? You two seem to be quite the dynamic duo."
Karin leaned in with a playful glint in her eyes. "Oh, you know how it is with Sasuke. Every day is an adventure. We've been exploring new territories, facing challenges, and, of course, trying to keep up with his relentless training routine."
As Karin delved into the details of her adventures with Sasuke, she couldn't resist sharing a particularly intimate moment that unfolded between them when she saw she had both of their attentions.
"You won't believe what happened when we were exploring a remote mountain range," she began, leaning in with a sly smile. "We encountered a rare and breathtaking field of moonlit flowers that only bloom once every few years. Sasuke, being the perceptive guy he is, noticed how captivated I was by the scenery. So, he used his Sharingan to enhance the moonlight, making the entire field glow even more magically. It was like something out of a dream," she finished, with a gleam in her eyes.
Ino, feigning enthusiasm, remarked, "Sasuke really knows how to set the mood, doesn't he? Moonlit flowers and magical fields, wow. And I'm sure you made love there then, huh? Has Sasuke been reading Icha Icha lately?"
Sakura, though attempting to remain composed, couldn't deny the pang of jealousy as Karin burst into laughter. The thought of Sasuke creating a picturesque moment for Karin stirred conflicting emotions within her and she reminisced about the last time something had been done for her. Kiba and her had gone on various romantic escapades, and she found herself smiling to herself as she reminisced.
Ino, determined to keep the atmosphere light and positive, shared a romantic moment from her own experiences. "You know, Shikamaru surprised me by organizing a spontaneous picnic in a field of wildflowers for our anniversary. He brought my favorite snacks, and we spent the afternoon lying on a blanket, just enjoying each other's company. Though I would have to admit, I had to spend so much time heavily hinting to him about it. It was also fun to taint the blanket, I won't deny."
Turning the conversation towards Sakura, Ino playfully asked, "And what about you, Sakura? Any romantic gestures that Kiba has pulled off that you'd like to share?"
Sakura, reflecting on her own moments with Kiba, couldn't help but share one such moment she was already reminiscing at the moment. "Well, there was this time when Kiba arranged a surprise dinner at a rooftop restaurant with a breathtaking view of the village for our anniversary. The entire place was adorned with fairy lights, and he even got a live band to play our favorite songs. It was incredibly romantic."
Ino leaned in excitedly. "Oh, and what about your first date with Kiba? I think that was even more breathtaking. He went all out, didn't he? A romantic getaway to a secluded cabin in the woods, surrounded by nature, dinner which he made for you, complete with being naughty to mark the night as perfection. It was like a scene from a romance manga. I guess it's only me who has to constantly nudge my boyfriend myself to haul his ass."
Sakura's eyes lit up as Ino recounted the details. It was the night Kiba had made love to her the first time, seeing the first time they slept together didn't exactly count. The realization dawned on her – Kiba had consistently been selfless, thoughtful, and incredibly romantic throughout their time together. She remembered being so entranced and had so much love in her heart to share. She remembered being so happy. Had such a time really existed?
And now, she couldn't help but feel a twinge of regret and hurt at having let go of it all. The realization that Kiba had consistently gone above and beyond for her, creating magical moments and memories, left her with a sense of missed opportunities and the times she might have overlooked or taken for granted his efforts. It became all the more prominent when her own efforts were rebuffed.
"It's all in the past now," she added as a cloud of melancholy settled over her. She remembered that there was another girl in his life now, stirring a mix of longing and remorse. "I let it all go. Everything's broken, and I… No… I can't pick up the pieces."
Ino, sensing Sakura's shift in mood, placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"Sakura, it's never too late to appreciate and reciprocate. People change, and so do relationships. If you feel this way, maybe it's time to have an honest conversation with Kiba, and not just about your present circumstances."
Karin's response carried a much sharper edge, devoid of any friendliness, even the fake one she had painted throughout. "Sakura, it's about time you start appreciating what you have. Trust me, of everyone here, I'm the one who has loved, lost, and suffered the most, so I know what I'm talking about. Kiba is a good guy, and if you keep avoiding the truth, you might end up losing something worthwhile. You can't play with people's feelings and expect everything to fall into place for you."
Karin's criticism was like a slap in the face. Sakura, feeling the full weight, couldn't help but acknowledge the truth in her words. Her realization that she had lost Kiba intensified the fear and urgency surrounding her impending conversations.
The tangled web of emotions surrounding Kakashi and her complicated past with Kiba demanded clarity. Fear and uncertainty gripped her as she acknowledged the necessity to set things straight, especially considering the revelation she had to share with them both.
It was only her profound sense of responsibility which pushed her forward. She grappled with the understanding that Kiba and Kakashi deserved to know about the pregnancy, an undeniable truth that she couldn't continue to withhold.
Even now, she had found her thoughts circling back to Kakashi when his name was mentioned. She was frankly exhausted by now. Perhaps being constantly obsessed with someone was an inborne trait. It was time to close that chapter of the book once and for all, like she had closed Sasuke's.
With the weight of unspoken truths pressing on her, Sakura reached a pivotal realization. She had always needed an obsession in her life. Her limerence had always been her driving force. If it wasn't Sasuke, it was Kakashi.
And now, after Kiba was successfully moving on, she found herself in a delicate balance between unspoken feelings, shared memories, and the evolving dynamics of her relationship became more apparent as she navigated the emotional nuances and the undercurrents which defined them.
Why must she always race after someone she could never have or had lost? What was the root cause for her profound limerence, and how should she cure it?
With her heart pounding and fear pulsating through her veins, Sakura resolved to approach the inevitable, daunting conversation one step at a time. The weight of her confessions and the revelations she held within her seemed both daunting and liberating. She felt she'd finally be able to smile and wave goodbye. She'd finally be able to severe that cancerous limb.
She knew it was Kiba who still cared for her, and he had loved her at one point. And based on her present circumstances and the conversation she had had with Kurenai, she knew she was making the right call, if not for herself, then her unborn child.
Sakura's heart raced at the thought of confessing everything to Kiba, from her lingering feelings for Kakashi to the profound truth of her pregnancy. The courage to confront the complexities of her relationships surged within her, overshadowing the fear that had held her back.
The knots in her stomach tightened with each passing moment, and a cold sweat formed on her palms. The prospect of baring her soul felt like stepping into an abyss of uncertainty.
She remained deathly quiet throughout the rest of the exchange, even with Ino trying unsuccessfully to keep her mood light and distracted.
After they were done and each girl went her separate way, Sakura navigated the crowded streets, each step echoing the internal journey she was about to embark upon. The bustling atmosphere outside Ichiraku's stood in stark contrast to the tumultuous emotions swirling within her.
In her mind, she rehearsed the words she needed to say to Kiba. One step at a time, she would unravel the truth and face the consequences.
