Chapter 2: Threads of Fate
In the heart of Sinnoh, Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup held the prestigious title of starter Pokémon. Despite the title of "Starter," they were exceptionally rare to come across, leaving many trainers longing for the chance to capture one but ultimately never getting the opportunity.
It was rumored that only one in fifty trainers would ever have the chance to obtain a starter Pokémon. So, one could imagine the sheer stroke of luck it took for Dawn to finally receive her Chimchar.
She had just been given a Starter Pokémon, a moment that should have filled her with joy and excitement. And it did, at least until she realized that her cute little Chimchar wanted nothing to do with her, like he wouldn't acknowledge her existence.
To add to the frustration, Barry decided that this was the perfect moment to challenge her to their first Pokémon battle. How could she possibly refuse such a challenge?
Dawn observed Chimchar's subtle defiance, his crossed arms and averted gaze speaking volumes. His attitude left her feeling a tinge of disappointment, like a silent barrier had formed between her and her new Pokémon.
The girl's mind was wandering in a haze of uncertainty. At least it was until Barry's voice pierced through her thoughts like a bolt of lightning, grabbing her attention.
"Darn it, Dawn!" Barry's voice boomed with frustration, his words cutting through the air like a sharp gust of wind. "Do you want to battle!? Yes or no? If you keep making me wait, I'm gonna fine you a million!"
"Well, if you're asking, then how could I say no?" Dawn admitted, her gaze shifting to meet Barry's expectant eyes.
Despite her Pokémon's current aloofness, she couldn't refuse Barry's challenge. Perhaps guiding Chimchar through battle could be just the catalyst they need to forge a bond.
Barry's enthusiasm surged as he threw his arm up triumphantly. "Dawn, I hope you're ready, because I don't plan on losing my first-ever Pokémon battle! Not to you, not to anyone!"
"Piplup, Pip!" Piplup cheered, matching Barry's infectious energy with its own spirited chirp.
Dawn grinned, her eyes sparkling with determination. "You know, I don't plan on losing this battle either, Barry," she retorted, a mischievous smirk dancing across her lips. "In fact, I think I'll be the one fining you!"
"Yeah right, as if you could ever hope to defeat me," Barry chuckled, oozing confidence. "Plus, don't forget, Piplup technically has the advantage over your Chimchar!"
"That may be true, but it won't matter, 'cause we won't even give Piplup the chance to attack," Dawn retorted, her tone turning serious.
"Is that a fact, then stop talking and show me!" Barry yelled, his competitive spirit ablaze.
"Fine, then watch this!" She yelled, with a fierce determination igniting her eyes, she thrusted out a commanding finger, her voice resolute as she bellowed, "Chimchar, end this in one move with your Flamethrower!"
Barry's eyes widened in disbelief. "F-flamethrower?!" His voice trembled with apprehension as he contemplated the potential devastation of the move.
Only despite Dawn's command, Chimchar remained motionless, seemingly absorbed in his own world. He absentmindedly scratched at his fur, completely carefree of the battle-at-hand.
Dawn's confident demeanor faded as the realization dawned on her. Wait a minute, I don't actually know a single move Chimchar can use, do I?
Barry's laughter echoed through the air; he wasn't sure if he was more relieved or amused. "You had me on the edge there for a moment. But let's face it, neither you nor I have a clue about our Pokémon's moves yet. So let's ease into it. I could call for something like Hydo Pump, but let's start off small with something like Water Gun!"
As Piplup unleashed Water Gun, droplets sparkled in the sunlight, forming a shimmering arc towards Chimchar. The water shot forth with precision, aimed directly at the Chimp Pokémon, who suddenly snapped out of his distracted state. With agile reflexes, Chimchar swiftly evaded the oncoming attack, dodging to the side with a nimble leap.
As the water splashed harmlessly behind him, Chimchar countered with a fierce Scratch attack, his claws glinting in the light as he aimed to strike Piplup.
"So fast!" Dawn's breath was caught in awe as Chimchar's nimbleness unfolded before her eyes. She marveled at the fire type's ability, impressed by its lightning-fast movements that seemed almost too quick to follow.
"Dodge it Piplup, don't let it hit you!" Barry's voice cut through the air.
With swift agility, Piplup lowered its body close to the ground, its movements fluid and graceful. As Chimchar's attack came hurtling towards it, Piplup shifted its weight effortlessly, smoothly evading the strike with a quick sidestep.
"Quickly Piplup! If you have any close-range moves, use them now!"
As the glow from Piplup's flipper intensified, it landed a solid hit on Chimchar's side, causing Chimchar to be sent flying backward until he crashed on his back with a thud. However, with a swift movement, he flipped onto his feet, ready to continue the battle.
"Char! Chimchar, Char!" The fire type bellowed, wagging a finger at his opponent in defiance.
A bead of sweat formed on Dawn's forehead, trickling down her face. It went from dodging to attacking in no time, Piplup might be even faster than Chimchar, doubtful thoughts began creeping in her mind.
"Once again, Piplup, use Water Gun!" Barry yelled, his voice resounded with steadfastness.
Piplup focused its energy, and with precision, another powerful jet stream of water propelled forth straight for Chimchar. The Water Gun surged with such stupendous velocity that it shattered the air around it, creating a sharp crack as it broke the sound barrier.
Dawn's eyes sparkled with urgency, "Chimchar, you can't get hit by that! Dodge it, quick!"
Not even bothering to pay his trainer any mind, Chimchar shot out a cascade of fiery sparks which danced through the air aiming straight for Piplup's Water Gun.
"I-isn't that Ember?" Dawn cried out, although she recognized the move, she also recognized a move like that wouldn't be of any use against a water type move such as Water Gun.
The torrent of water connected with the Ember, easily engulfing the move in its powerful stream. Ember struggled against the onslaught, putting up a good fight, but the force of water extinguished its flames, leaving Chimchar momentarily stunned.
The poor fire starter was struck head-on by the forceful jet stream, the force of the water hit Chimchar with such intensity it felt like being struck by a freight train. Chimchar wasn't just knocked back; he was sent flying, careening past Dawn, past the "Welcome to Twinleaf Town" sign, until he crashed into a tree with bone-crushing force, shattering it in two.
"Chimchar!" Dawn cried out, swinging her head towards her damaged- Pokémon.
The Chimp Pokémon staggered to his feet, soaked from head to toe with steam rising from his singed fur. Each breath coming out in ragged gasps, his chest heaving with effort as it was a struggle in-itself to regain his footing.
Piplup smiled as he took a good look at his injured opponent, then turned around and began playfully slapping his own rear end, mocking Chimchar.
The mocking gestures only served to fuel Chimchar's anger, evident in the fiery glare that ignited in his eyes as he watched Piplup's antics.
Chimchar charged forth, his rage fueling his every moment, his claws extended with a flicker of intense heat, almost like fiery blades.
"No, rushing in without thinking isn't going to win us this battle!" Dawn yelled, only Chimchar was too blinded by fury to even heed her warnings. Not that he listened to her even once during the entire battle thus far.
Dashing forward, Chimchar became a smear of orange. Each stride propelled him forward with such velocity that he seemed to blur into the surroundings, faster even than the Water Gun that had struck him earlier.
Barry's grin extended from cheek to cheek as he confidently crossed his arms. "Okay Piplup, now's our chance! Chimchar's super-duper weakened by now, your Pound should be more than enough to finish this!"
With incredible agility, Piplup sidestepped Chimchar's furious Scratch, swiftly positioning itself behind the angry Pokémon. In one fluid motion, Piplup delivered a powerful Pound to Chimchar's back just as he zoomed past.
The force of the attack was so immense that Chimchar could feel its entire body trembling with the impact before collapsing to the ground, overwhelmed by the sheer power of the blow. And it didn't help that Chimchar was already fatigued.
Dawn took no time to rush to Chimchar's side, dropping to her knees with urgency as she called out, "Chimchar, Chimchar! Are you okay!?" her voice filled with worry for her fallen Pokémon.
She gently shook her Starter Pokémon, her touch urging Chimchar's eyes to slowly twitch open, relieving her from her worries.
Barry took his eyes off Dawn, and onto his victorious Piplup. He extended his open palm toward his water-type, his smile radiating enthusiasm. "You were amazing, little buddy. If it had taken you even a tiny bit more effort to win that, I might've had to fine you. Give me a high five!"
"Piplup, Piplup!" With a joyful chirp, Piplup leaped into the air, its flipper reaching out to meet Barry's hand, sealing their victory with a resounding slap.
Barry shifted his focus from Piplup to Dawn, offering a contemplative gaze. "Well, what can I say Dawn? That was quite the debut battle for both of us! But it's obvious you and Chimchar need to work on your teamwork," The boy declared, assessing the situation. "It didn't listen to a single word you said, it was almost like you were a ghost or something!"
"Yeah, I noticed." Dawn remarked matter-of-factly, her gaze shifting upwards to meet Barry's.
"Technically, you did lose, but it doesn't feel like much of a win for me either, considering you and Chimchar aren't quite in sync yet," he paused, his glance shifting between Dawn and the barely conscious Chimchar. "Alright, just this once, I think I'll hold off on fining you, until we have our real first battle."
"If you say so," Dawn replied, attempting to muster a smile, though it felt forced. It was then that she caught the sound of Chimchar's pained wince, prompting her to instinctively cradle the fire-type in her arms.
"Anyways, I'll be taking off now," Barry declared, excitement coloring his voice. "I wanna head back home and show off Piplup to Mom. Maybe I can even call Dad and share the good news with him. I know he's always busy, but he definitely needs to hear this."
"Yeah, that's fine," Dawn agreed, before the realization dawned upon her. "Wait a sec, what're we gonna do about what Professor Rowan said?
Barry pivoted back towards Dawn, a quizzical look on his face. "Uh, he said a lot, Dawn. Care to clarify?"
Dawn's voice carried a hint of uncertainty. "Sorry. I just meant how he said we'd need to meet him in his lab tomorrow in Sandgem. We agreed to become his protégés, remember?"
"Oh right, well... I guess I don't mind becoming his protégé as long as that means I can still challenge the 8 gyms," Barry said, before his eyes lit up with an idea. "Hey, what if we had a little race there tomorrow? We set foot at the crack of dawn; loser gets fined? Sound good?"
"Crack of dawn? got it," Dawn agreed with a bob of her head, her determination shining through.
"Alright, well, I'll catch you tomorrow then, see ya!" Barry exclaimed, already darting away at his usual breakneck speed, Piplup struggling to follow behind him.
Dawn's smile faded as she shifted her attention back to Chimchar, her expression turning serious. She gently cradled the injured Pokémon in her arms, concern etched on her face.
Chimchar's eyes widened fully as he realized Dawn was holding him. With a sudden motion, he shook himself out of her grasp, clearly not having an ounce of respect for her.
"Char, Char!" Chimchar's screeches filled the air as he directed his anger towards his trainer, his body tensed and his demeanor hostile.
"Listen Chimchar," she began, her words carrying a sense of reassurance, "losing this battle, it doesn't define us. It's just one small step in our journey. We'll face challenges and setbacks, but what matters is how we learn and grow from them. Trust me, we'll have plenty of victories ahead."
Dawn's mind raced with thoughts as she reflected on the battle. But still, Barry and Piplup's teamwork were incredible, it's like their strength was magnified by the power of their bond. Could me and Chimchar even get anywhere near that level?
Chimchar locked eyes with Dawn, sensing the doubt in her heart despite her reassuring words.
"Char, Char, Char!" Chimchar vocalized, gesturing urgently behind Dawn. Startled, she turned, asking, "What?" Suddenly, Chimchar vaulted over her, deftly tugging her hat down over her eyes, leaving her momentarily blind.
"Hey, what the heck are you doing?" Dawn demanded, swiftly removing her hat. But much to her surprise, Chimchar had vanished, leaving her momentarily bewildered.
Dawn sprang to her feet, utterly astonished. "Where'd he go?" she muttered to herself, scanning the area frantically. "And how'd he get away so quickly?" Her voice, a mix of disbelief and frustration.
The girl's gaze swept over the ground, her eyes scanning for any sign of Chimchar's presence. Amidst the patches of grass and scattered leaves, she noticed faint imprints, delicate marks pressed into the earth, looking to be about the same size and shape as Chimchar's footprints. With a puzzled frown, she followed the trail, as urgently as possible.
As she followed the trail of footprints, she noticed they were leading her deeper into the forest, straight towards the serene shores of Lake Verity, a place she had never dared to set foot in before.
With her sprinting deeper into the forest towards an area she knew little about, a troubling thought crossed her mind: Could Chimchar truly hate her so much that he'd attempt to abandon her?
Emerging from the dense forest, Dawn found herself at the edge of Lake Verity. Tall trees surrounded the serene body of water, their branches swaying gently in the breeze. Sunlight danced on the rippling surface of the lake, casting a tranquil glow over the scene. Despite the peaceful atmosphere, Dawn couldn't shake the feeling of apprehension as she searched for any sign of her Pokémon's whereabouts.
Finally, Dawn's eyes locked onto Chimchar's silhouette against the shimmering water of Lake Verity. The fiery Pokémon stood at the water's edge; its small frame outlined by the soft light filtering above them. With one foot dipped into the tranquil surface, Chimchar seemed lost in thought, his gaze fixated on the ripples spreading outwards.
"Chimchar, there you are!" Dawn called out, Chimchar perked up, turning his face towards hers, not expecting for her to have followed him.
Chimchar huffed turning his back to her, his body language expressing clear animosity to her presence.
"So, what's the plan anyway? You trying to escape by sea?" Dawn's expression tightened with concern, "if you go into that water, you'll drown."
Chimchar's fist tightened, frustration clearly written all over his face.
"Listen, I know you don't like me very much. Maybe I can accept that, I can't force everyone to like me. If you really want to go back to Professor Rowan so badly, I'll return you to him when I meet him tomorrow, you have my word, so, please, just step away from the lake," Dawn's voice softened as she spoke, nothing but understanding in her tone.
Chimchar's gaze returned towards Dawn for what felt like an eternity, his expression unreadable. Then, with a defiant flick of his tongue, he mocked Dawn, who was at her limit.
"Okay then, best of luck to you, Dawn uttered her resignation, trying her best to mask the sadness in her voice. With a sigh, she closed her eyes and began to walk away from the lake, leaving Chimchar behind.
Dawn's thoughts raced as she leaned against the nearest tree, seeking solace. Why does everything happen to me? Out of three Pokémon, why did I have to pick the one that doesn't want a trainer? A tear trickled down her cheek, mirroring the sadness she felt in her heart.
"I hate my life..." Dawn's voice quivered as she whispered, her voice barely audible against the backdrop of the forest.
Dawn's eyelids began to flutter as a distant sound of echoing screams pierced through the serene ambiance. Slowly, her eyes cracked open, and she swiftly pivoted around. With her heart racing, she fixed her gaze on the source of the screaming.
Her eyes widened in horror as she saw Chimchar struggling in the deep lake water, his small body thrashing about desperately. Waves crashed over him, pulling him under with each loud surge.
She could hear his panicked cries for help mingling with the splashes of water, the sound piercing through the once tranquil atmosphere of the forest. Panic seized Dawn's chest as she watched Chimchar's frantic struggle for survival.
The fire type's frenzied movements slowed as exhaustion overtook him, and gradually, his body began to sink beneath the surface of the water. His hand, reaching out desperately, was the last part of him to vanish beneath the murky depths.
There was no time to think. With a surge of adrenaline coursing through her veins, her body just moves, propelling her forward without a moment's hesitation. She raced toward the water's edge and dove headfirst into the chilly depths of Lake Verity. It wasn't the most logical decision she could've made, but Dawn was always more of the type to act on emotion anyways.
Determined to reach the Pokémon before it was too late, Dawn pushed herself deeper into the water. Each stroke brought her closer to the struggling Chimchar, but with each passing moment, the distance seemed to stretch farther.
The water enveloped her, muffling the sound of her own heartbeat as she fought against the pressure weighing down on her chest. Every muscle in her body strained as she propelled herself through the murky depths, her lungs burning for oxygen as she pushed herself to her limit.
As Dawn's vision adjusted to the dimness of the lake's depths, she spotted Chimchar's unconscious body at the lake's bottom. With a surge of determination, she reached out, her fingers brushing against his arm in a desperate attempt to pull him to the surface. Despite her best efforts, she wasn't able to lift him, her strength waning against the overwhelming force of the lake.
As she fought to lift Chimchar, the water around her grew even heavier, dragging her down. Panic enveloped her as she felt her lungs screaming for oxygen, the weight of the water pressed against her chest, squeezing the air from her lungs. Her vision fading into shadowy oblivion.
With her consciousness fading away, her desperate struggles were punctuated by bubbles of precious air escaping from her lips, rising upwards towards the surface in a silent plea for help. Her vision fully blurred and dimmed, everything around her fading into a murky haze. Yet, despite the encroaching darkness, her hand remained clasped around Chimchar's, a final testament to her unwavering resolve.
Dawn's thoughts swirled in a chaotic whirlpool as she struggled to maintain consciousness. I'm sorry, Professor... I won't be meeting you tomorrow after all, she lamented internally, her willpower beginning to falter.
With her body ceasing to fight, her heart raced with fear and desperation. Her movements burning with exertion as she lost the power to resist. Then, suddenly, her heart gave a final, feeble beat before it stopped entirely.
In that moment, time seemed to stand still. Dawn's mind was consumed by a numbing sensation, her senses dulled by the cold embrace of the water. The world around her faded into nothingness, and for once in her life, a profound sense of peace washed over her, accompanied by a strange detachment from reality.
As her life slipped away, Dawn's fingers slowly released Chimchar's hand, it was over for the both of them.
Suddenly, disregarding all logic, Dawn and Chimchar were enveloped by an enigmatic force, lifting them effortlessly from the shallow depths. Their bodies ascended, shrouded in an otherworldly aura, as if guided by unseen presence that defied comprehension.
As they were lifted from the vicious lake, their forms surrounded by a shimmering glow. With each passing movement, they rose higher and higher, until they broke through the surface, hovering above the tranquil surface of the lake.
Landing gently on the lush grassy bank, Dawn and Chimchar laid motionless, their bodies still unconscious from the whole ordeal. The soft blades of grass cushioned their descent, providing safe landing for both trainer and Pokémon.
As Dawn's body convulsed with the effort, she coughed up water, her lungs protesting its intrusion. With a gasp, her eyes fluttered open, dazed and disoriented. A flicker of life returning to her as her heart resumed its steady rhythm, a miraculous revival which quite literally saved her from the brink.
Her gaze drifted upwards, drawn by a soft, ethereal glow tinting the sky with hues of a delicate pink color. As her vision cleared and her senses returned, she found herself mesmerized by its otherworldly radiance, its gentle embrace enveloping her with a sense of wonder and awe. A sight unlike any she'd seen before.
Within the soothing light of the pink aura, Dawn discerned a graceful figure, its form shimmering with an otherworldly luminescence. Delicate tendrils of light cascaded around it like tendrils of mist, while its eyes sparkled with an ancient wisdom that seemed to pierce through the very fabric of reality.
Though Dawn couldn't fathom the being's true nature, she was captivated by its beauty and the mystifying aura that surrounded it.
With a sudden burst of speed, the unearthly being streaked across the sky, leaving behind a trail of scintillated light that faded into the distance before Dawn could even fully register its departure.
"Was that... an angel?" Dawn's voice trembled slightly as she uttered her bewildered question, her gaze briefly fixed on the spot where the godlike being disappeared.
Dawn's eyes shifted to her left, where Chimchar lied unconscious but breathing steadily. Relief flooded her as she took in the sight of her Pokémon, still recovering from the terrifying trial they endured.
With trembling fingers, Dawn extended her hand, gently cupping Chimchar's cheek. A surge of warmth coursed through her as she felt a faint heartbeat beneath his fur, a reassurance that they both made it through.
Tenderly, she brushed away a stray tear that glistened on her fur, her silent vow to protect him even stronger than before.
Hey everybody, first off, happy Mother's Day (at least I think this chapter will be uploaded on Mother's Day) anyways, go find your mom and hug her. Buy her flowers, get her a gift or something.
Anyways, that's this chapter, I had a long-time reviewer of my work mention the first chapter sounded too AI-generated, so I hope this is better.
Well, I'll shut up now, expect a new chapter in no time,
