Jonathan was driving home from the station. He had just managed to find enough evidence to prove without a doubt that Frank Laurenzo was the ringleader of a gang that had popped up about a year ago. As he drove past a light that had just turned green, he suddenly heard a horn as someone ran the red light, crashing right into him, sending his car flying before everything went black.
Jonathan tried to look around but could not see anything in the pitch dark that he found himself in. He started to wonder if this was the afterlife or if he was unconscious, hopefully on his way to a hospital. As he was pondering his situation, suddenly, everything went white. He had to shield his face from the blinding light, but as he did, the light got more bearable as he suddenly saw he was looking out a window while lying in a bed.
Looking around only seemed to confuse Jonathan more as it appeared he was lying down in a child's room and not in a hospital bed as he thought he would be. He then tried to get out of bed to notice that everything seemed bigger than normal. But as he had that thought, he looked at his hands and realized everything didn't get bigger, but he got smaller.
This realization made him panic slightly because he no longer seemed to be in his body. Did he die and possess some kid? Jonathan did not know, but he started to calm down as he realized panicking would not help anyone. He needed to find out who he was and where he was. Looking around the room, he noticed a computer and walked up to turn it on.
As the computer booted up, Jonathan was disappointed to see that it needed a password, so he decided to try to put in some random codes. As he did that, a date came to mind, so he put that in to unlock the computer. Jonathan started to wonder if this was muscle memory or if the kid's original soul was still here. Looking through the computer, he noticed a document named Journal and clicked it.
The journal started by explaining that this was Jonathan's journal, which he started on his eighth birthday. Jonathan paused as he read the name and wondered if it was a coincidence that this kid shared his name, so he decided to continue to read. The kid's mother had told him to start a journal so that when he became a famous trainer, he could use it as a reference for writing his story for others to follow. Then, it continued with his hopes of passing the youngster exams in the hope of qualifying for a sponsor from Professor Oak when he turned 10, but he did not score high enough.
Something about the professor's name rang a bell to Jonathan, but he couldn't quite place it, so he continued to read the journal. The kid was now nine at this point in the journal and seemed to still be down about not passing with a high enough grade. He stated that his mother was doing her best to cheer him up, saying that just because the professor didn't see his worth didn't mean that he was worthless. It just meant he would have to show the professor wrong when he turned thirteen.
After some time, Jonathan got to the last entry, which stated that it was the day before his tenth birthday and that his mother wanted him to think seriously about what he wanted to be after his journey and who he wanted for his starter Pokémon. At the word pokémon, Jonathan paused and got confused. He had watched and played all the games because his brother's kids loved them and he had decided to try them out so he could be a good uncle and play with them to give them a good memory.
Jonathan got up from the computer chair, walked up to a window, and looked out to see where he was. He saw a bunch of buildings, but one stood out the most. Where he assumed the center of the city stood a building that was taller than everything else around it, making it truly stand out. Returning to the computer, he searched the search bar, searched for a map, and clicked on the first result. Opening a map of the Kanto Region, he noticed that it had placed him in Saffron City. Trying to remember what he knew of Saffron, he recalled it was the town that had the psychic gym and the Silph Co. building that had been taken over by Team Rocket.
Upon realizing he was in the pokémon universe, Jonathan ran back to the computer and tried to search for Team Rocket, but no results came up. Then he searched for the Silph Co. attack, but no results came up. Either he was in a universe where Team Rocket had yet to show themself, or there was no Team Rocket. Anything he searched for, Giovanni had him as the golden example of what a gym leader should be, even if some people seemed to think he was a little too heavy-handed in his battles.
After wondering where in the timeline or even what timeline he was in, he looked at the date and noticed it was a day after the latest journal entry, making this his tenth birthday if the journal was actually written by the kid he was now. He went to the closet and got changed out of the pajamas he was still in. He decided to walk downstairs, hoping that the mother wouldn't recognize that he had seemed to change personalities in a single night.
