21. A Message to a Stranger

To the artist who sent me a PM titled "Art Commission" (you should know who you are):

On one hand, the fact that your message (a) opens with generic compliments which in no way demonstrate that you've read anything I've written, (b) proceeds to ramble about your own work, and (c) ends with offering alternate means of contact when we could just as easily continue to communicate via PM... does not make you look like someone who genuinely enjoys my writing and wants to help with its creation. And yes, I HAVE had someone approach me for this purpose; I know what I'm talking about.

On the other hand, you do get points for reaching out to offer your visual art skills to the man who infrequently insults himself for a lack of visual art skills.

Nevertheless, given that you have never posted a review on my works nor contacted me via PM prior to your sales pitch, I'm disinclined to believe that you're actually reading my work until I have received further evidence. Being as I received said sales pitch almost immediately after posting the previous chapter of this work, I suspect that if you are a reader of my writing, you have an interest in my Ransei stories - or, at least, Drifting in Eternity. In claiming that you "have enjoyed" reading my stories, you suggest an ongoing readership, which implies an awareness of this story's update rate, and should therefore notice me addressing you here.

If you do not react to this message (by any means), I must assume that you have simply sent the same copy-pasted PM to multiple authors of stories that had been recently posted or updated at the time you decided to do so. In which case, such indiscriminate and insincere advertisement is a strong motivator for me not to purchase your services.

To my (other) actual readers: I apologize for prolonging the previous chapter's cliffhanger by posting this message as Chapter 21. This message will be deleted on Friday, and the intended Chapter 21 will be uploaded, along with Chapter 22. Those of you have FFN accounts, I ask that you do not post a review to this chapter while this message is in place; it will cause you to be unable to post a review in response to Chapter 21 once it has been posted, and FFN currently does not allow the deletion of non-guest reviews.
