Happy Synthesizer, I'll play you a melody that will reach into your heart!
"Woah! Rare IRL Lumina spotted!" More than a few audience members gasped as the fourth—but certainly not final—member of Unichord burst onto stage. For once, she wasn't on the big screen above, but right behind her other three unit-mates.
"Lumina! Lumina! Lumina! Lumina!" The part of the crowd that recognized the girl from her pre-Unichord days—which was most of it—was in ecstasy, chanting her name and fist-pumping their green glowsticks rhythmically.
"Hey, hey, hey, everyone, that's right! It's ya gal pal, Lumina Ichihoshi, Intergalactic Voyager Extraordinaire, finally come down to Earth to meet all of you lovely humans!" She waved both hands at the crowd and it went wild again. No one was smiling harder, though, than the unit's DJ.
Any harder or longer and her face will split in half! Kokoa scoffed. Which would be interesting to see, if nothing else… Her scoff became a smirk. But what she didn't know was that it was because Michiru and Lumina had something special planned for that show…
It was nothing extravagant, at least not compared to simply having Lumina perform in person, but it was something Michiru and Lumina were excited about since the possibility occurred to them. They passed each other onstage, winking as Michiru vaulted into the DJ booth.
Down below and in front, Lumina began to sing. "Remember that first fragile crush that suddenly went out of bloom? It's all a funny story when we look back on it now…" She was teasing Michiru, referring to their earliest days working together before transitioning into something more real.
"Everything I saw looked like it sparkled! Those days were smiling beautifully!" Michiru agreed, beaming and nodding at her vocalist.
Equally fitting, Kokoa was given one of the more frustrated lines of the song. "Do we only get to learn ways to hide what we really feel?"
"We were told, "hurry up and become adults!" but I don't think we really do," Hayate winked.
"So much I didn't know, and I couldn't admit it," all four of them sang, looking back in fond amusement at their hectic, early days.
"We're just right for each other! I'm sorry, it was a lie." It seemed like an unfitting line for what was supposed to be a love song, especially with Hayate as the one singing it, but it had special meaning to her, both for her unit and her girlfriend. The night she approached Kokoa, that was practically what she said, and it wasn't a lie in the sense that Hayate's feelings were untrue, but as with all relationships, the way they were at the very beginning was different from now. They had time to see each other's flaws and let perfection fade like the lie it was. Then, true love could be.
Happy Synthesizer, kimi no mune no oku made todoku youna melody kanaderu yo!
"Pointless facades and things you dislike, I'll erase them all for you with this sound!" Again, the quartet sang in perfect synchronicity. That was the beauty of Unichord, even though it took a bit of time to find. They all came to the unit with their own agendas, posturing, distrustful, each one trying to, in a way, assert dominance and prove herself to the others. But now, they'd come to realize that the facades were nothing but a waste of time.
The music was always supposed to be the heart, nothing else. The Happy Synthesizer was, well, happy! And it generated, or synthesized, even more happiness. That was the spirit of what Unichord was trying to embody now.
"I'm not much good for anything," Kokoa admitted shyly.
"But there's just one thing…" Hayate's eyes sparkled mischievously as she stepped beside her girlfriend and wrapped an arm around her waist.
"One thing I can do even though it's not much!" Michiru took one hand off the turntables to fist-pump the air.
Then they all sang together again. "I'll convey plain but rousing words…"
And let Lumina finish it off! "Through electronic sounds!"
When she was done, she stepped back while Hayate and Kokoa ran towards each other from opposite sides of the stage. They finally had a duet in the song, and of course… "Falling in love with someone doesn't need reasons. No need for "twisting the truth", right?"
"Blaming it on the era and giving up, that's as far as you'll go." Lumina looked as if she was lecturing the crowd even though she smiled.
"Nothing will start, until you step forward!" Michiru agreed. Then as Kokoa and Hayate approached each other again, she slid from the DJ booth…
"I'm sorry to call you late at night. You were going to bed, right?" Kokoa pretended to ask Hayate shyly. Her heart felt like it was exploding, because she knew what was coming… Honestly, if her heartrate was this bad already, and "It" hadn't even happened yet…
Behind her, Lumina and Michiru were even making a show out of watching her and Hayate. The dancer grinned cockily at the VJ.
"How funny you just called! I was about to do the same!" Then she leaned in and kissed Kokoa's cheek. While Kokoa couldn't help but try to hide her face with the collar of her costume, indeed more affected by the kiss than she thought she would be, Michiru and Lumina grinned at them like proud parents, then they locked eyes with each other. This was "Happy Synthesizer", and in some places, "gay" meant "happy".
"For the two who feel as though their attraction makes their hearts tickle, I will send you both a beat to wish you happiness!" Then as the line ended, Lumina grabbed the front of Michiru's costume and dragged her in for a quick kiss on the lips. Michiru smiled through the whole thing, kissing back. The crowd went even wilder. Hayate applauded politely while Kokoa, although she still looked flustered, managed a lopsided smile.
Happy Synthesizer, see, you'll be pleased. I'll play you this melody that will wipe away tears. Do you have to pretend you're stronger than you truly are? Not really. Embrace the real you inside!
It was a day of coming out on multiple fronts. Kokoa finally felt ready to tell the world about her relationship with Hayate. Lumina and Michiru felt the same. And even though Lumina wasn't coming out to everyone about not being human, it was the first time she was literally able to come out and perform alongside her unit-mates rather than forever stuck behind them. That was the sudden idea that delighted her and Michiru…
"Hey, Michiru…" Lumina sounded unusually subdued as she stared at her feet.
"Something wrong?" Michiru frowned, instantly alarmed.
"No… I… I… I just realized that I can… can… can dance…" It was something Lumina noted the second she got feet, but it was only after walking around in them for a while that the true extent of what she was now capable of finally started to sink in. "I can… I can… I can dance! And not just… dance! But dance with you!" Both eyes shining, she opened her arms to Michiru. Michiru gasped, then her eyes went just as starry as it clicked.
For weeks, every rehearsal, they practiced their little plot (but only after Kokoa and Hayate were gone, since they wanted it to be surprise)! But in order to further make the real concert worth it, the two never actually kissed, stopping inches apart, but now…?
Woah… Lumina was breathless again, though she was able to keep singing, but it was a little harder as a human than AI. She hid it better than Michiru, but Lumina had been more affected by that kiss than expected, like Kokoa.
As they reached the bridge of the song, key going up, Lumina felt her spirits lift too and she wanted to cheer and shout to the world.
I DID IT! I DID IT! I GOT THE GIRL! That kiss… she knew what they were, but actually have one?! All the supernovas in the galaxy couldn't compare to the fireworks exploding in her chest. Lumina finally set her mic down and simply began dancing with each of her unit mates, taking their hands one at a time and spinning them across the stage before switching to the next partner. It was another impromptu routine that surprised Hayate, Kokoa, and Michiru, but Lumina's happiness was infectious, and she synthesized more and more not jut within her unit-mates, but the entire audience, as she continued to sing, laugh, and dance all around stage, heart and hands intertwined with her dear, beloved unit-mates!
AN: I used multiple versions of the TL just trying to cobble together something that fit the song, LOL!
