Chapter 6
Introducing Clementine
"So Kenny." Clementine started off as she and Kenny walked down the hallway leading to the base's rec room.
"Yes Clem?" The middle aged black/gray haired man replied, even though he had a rather good idea to what it was the young teenage girl was about to ask him.
"The Resistance soldiers under your command...what are they like?" She softly asked, as she was deeply curious to what her new squad/teammates were like.
"Well, to be honest Clementine, the teenagers under my command are excellent soldiers. Although, I should warn you that some of them can be a bit, um...hotheaded." Kenny answered in all modesty as he explained to Clem that Violet, Louis, Marlon and the rest of the squad were superb soldiers...while describing a certain brunette teenage boy as a hothead and loose cannon.
"Oh, I see." Clem stated while nodding softly after learning how several of her new teammates had attitude problems.
"But, I promise you honey. Once you get to know them, you'll get along just fine. Plus, several of them of actually eager to know you." Kenny automatically added as he informed Clementine on how Louis and the rest of the squad were anxiously waiting to meet her before they came to an immediate pause: as they had stopped right outside the closed doors to the recreational room.
"This is it. You ready?" He softly asked while placing a gentle hand on her left shoulder in a fatherly-like manner, which earned a warm from the young African American teenage girl.
"Yes sir." Clem answered casually with a soft smile on her face as she assured Kenny, whom was her new commanding officer that she was more than ready to meet her new squad and teammates, which earned a similar and proud smile from the middle aged dark/gray haired man in return as he opened the doors to the rec room, where they spotted Louis, Marlon, Violet and the others waiting patiently for their arrival and automatically saluted their commanding officer and spotted the young teenage girl standing beside him.
"Everyone...I'd like to introduce you to Pvt. Clementine Everett." MSgt. Hammon started off professionally with a proud smile on his face as he introduced his troops to Lee's teenage daughter, whom had her hands behind her back.
"Clementine, I'd like to introduce you to your new team. This young man here is Lance Corporal Marlon James; squad leader and team sniper." Kenny continued as he turned to Marlon, whom smiled softly and stepped forward.
"It's a pleasure to meet you Pvt. Everett." Marlon stated professionally as he extended and offered his right hand for a handshake, which the young African American teenage girl gladly accepted.
"It's a pleasure to meet you and your squad as well, LCpl. James." Clem replied in a similar professional tone as she and Marlon shook hands.
"Heh, there's no need to be so formal. Feel free to call me Marlon." The older blonde teenage boy stated while chuckling softly as he informed Clementine that she didn't need to refer to him as her superior.
"Okay. Well, then you and the others can call me Clem. It's what my old team, father and Kenny practically called me my whole life." The young teenage girl replied with a casual grin on her face as she Marlon continued to shake hands before she turned her attention to Louis.
"This is PFC. Louis Livingston. He's one of our best rifleman and scouts/spotters." Kenny stated.
"Not to mention the team's charm policy." The older African American teenage boy stated casually with a warm grin, which earned a small collection of giggles/chuckles from Brody, Rick, Marlon and even Clem herself while Mitch and Violet simply scoffed while glancing away in irritation.
"It's nice to meet you Clementine. We're looking forward to working with you." He automatically added as he offered Clem a hand to shake, which she gladly accepted.
"It's nice to mee you as well Louis." Clem stated with a soft grin as she instantly took a liking to Louis's sense of humor, which reminded her Bill's and felt that they would get along just fine before she turned her attention to Mitch.
"This is Cpl. Mitch Weston; the team's shotgunner and explosives specialist." Kenny continued as he introduced Clementine to the combative brunette, whom was the team's shotgun and explosive specialist.
"He loves to blow shit up." Louis stated jokingly, which earned a earned a small chuckle from Clem, Marlon, Brody, Assim, Ruby, Rick and Violet.
"Glad to have you on board." Mitch stated casually as he offered Clementine a hand to shake, which she gladly accepted.
"Thank you." The young African American teenage girl replied.
"These two lovely young ladies are PFC. Brody Easton and Cpl. Ruby Emerson, our top and best combat medics." Kenny stated as he turned to Ruby and Brody, whom couldn't help but smile in modesty after hearing their C.O. refer them to as 'lovely young ladies'.
"It's a pleasure to meet you Clementine." Brody stated with a bright and kind smile as she greeted Clementine and welcomed her onto the team.
"Nice to meet you hon'. We're glad to have you with us." Ruby added after Brody as she and the young African American teenage girl shook hands.
"Thank you. It's a pleasure to meet you and Ruby as well Brody." Clem stated with a soft smile on her face as she and Brody shook hands before she turned to Ruby.
"This right here is PFC. Assim Durman, our residential ace sniper. This kid...one of the best sharpshooters we ever discovered throughout selections." Kenny stated as he turned to and introduced Assim, whom couldn't help but chuckle and smirk softly as he brought up his stellar skills with a sniper rifle.
"Nice to meet Pvt. Everett. Welcome to the team." Assim stated with the soft grin on his face as he and Clementine shook hands firmly.
"Likewise." Clementine replied.
"This fine gentleman right here is PFC. Rick Brennan, one of our finest and top marksman behind Louis." Kenny continued as he turned to and introduced Rick, whom had reached into his right pants pocket and pulled out a toothpick that he placed between his lips.
"It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance Pvt. Everett." Rick stated with a soft and casual grin on his face as he and the young teenage girl shook hands.
"It's a pleasure to make yours as well." Clem stated with an equally warm grin.
"This right here is LCpl. Davey Blackwood, our residential tracker. Whenever someone gets separated or left behind while out in the field, Blackwood's the man we send to find them." Kenny stated as he introduced Davey, whom had been glancing to the ground with his arms crossed before swiftly bringing his eyes back upward.
"Nice to meet you. Welcome to the team, newbie ." Davey stated gruffly with a soft and kind grin as he and Clementine shook hands.
"Thanks. Nice to meet you too." Clem replied.
"And lastly Clementine...I'd like to introduce you to PFC. Violet Marshall, another of our best rifleman. She can be a bit...rough around the edges, but once you get to know her; she's a true soldier and loyal teammate." Kenny concluded as he introduced Violet and as soon as she turned to face her Clementine couldn't help but let out a soft gasp...as she had came face to face with the most prettiest girl she had ever seen. And unknown to Kenny, Marlon and the rest of the team and even Clem herself: Violet had thought the same thing the second she laid eyes on her.
"It's...It's nice to meet you Clementine. Welcome to Long Beach." Violet stated softly as she was deeply taken back by how young and pretty the African American teenage girl joining their team was as she offered her hand to shake, which she kindly accepted.
"It's...Its nice to meet you as well Violet." Clem stated as she and the blonde teenage girl shook hands as she turned to the faces of her new team/squad and hopefully friends.
"Well...seeing that we've gotten the proper introductions out of the way, it's only fair that we make it official. Clementine...welcome to the Long Beach Division: home of the 125th Infantry." Kenny stated with a warm grin on his face and arms crossed against his chest as he cleared his throat and officially welcomed Clem onto his squad with Violet, Louis, Marlon and the others smiling casually with their arms folded behind their backs.
"Thank you MSgt. Hammon, it's an honor." Clementine stated humbly as she bowed her head forward.
"Your welcome. And seeing as how we haven't received any new orders from headquarters or Baron, you and your new teammates may as well take full advantage of this opportunity to enjoy yourselves. You kids deserve it." Kenny replied with a soft smile on his face as he was deeply proud of the young teenage girl's sense of professionalism and informed his troops on how they could continue with their leisure time before exiting the rec room to allow Clem, Violet, Louis and the rest of the team to get better acquainted.
"Well, since we have plenty of time to kill...what do you guys usually do?" Clem softly asked as she was curious to what her new squad/teammates normally did on their free time.
"Heh, it's kinda funny you should ask new girl. 'Cuz I've got the perfect thing for us to do right here and now." Louis answered with a casual grin on his face as he walked towards one of the cabinets in the back of the room, opened it and went through the numerous contents until he found and pulled out what he had been looking for: an old deck of bicycle cards.
"Which is...?" The young African American teenage girl softly asked while Marlon, Ruby, Brody and Violet shared an amused smile to what game it was that Louis felt like playing.
"We're gonna play a game of War: the oldest game around ever to be played by man and beast alike. You know how to play?" Louis answered as he revealed the name of the card game that he wanted them to play and asked Clementine if she knew how to play it.
"Can't say that I do." She answered truthfully while shaking her head as she had never played War before.
"The game's rather simple: everyone gets a stack of cards from the deck and everyone draws and flips a card over. The highest card wins." Marlon stated as he explained the rules of the card game to Clementine: how the people playing would have to draw a card from their own stack of cards and how the player with the highest card would be the winner.
"Okay, sounds simple enough." Clem stated while softly nodding her head as she slowly understood the general idea of the game.
"And the winner gets to ask Clementine a question." Louis automatically added while revealing an additional rule to the game: how the player with the highest card would get ask Clem a personal question...much to her genuine surprise!
"Come again?" Clem asked with a stupefied look on her face after hearing unexpected rule!
"What? I wanna get to know you. We all do." Louis replied while turning to Marlon and the others, whom softly nodded in agreement: showing that they indeed wanted to know the young African American teenage girl whom was now their new squad mate better.
"Okay...And if I win?" Clementine asked with a soft smile on her face after learning the reason behind the 2nd rule of the game: so she and her new friends/teammates could bond and get to know each other.
"Then you get to ask one of us a question. I mean, it's only fair." Violet answered for Louis as she explained to Clem that if she picked and drew the highest card, she would be able to ask her, Ruby, Mitch or Louis a question.
"...Alright. I'm game." Clem stated with a warm grin as she understood the rules of the game, which earned a similar smile from her new friends.
"Sorry guys, but I'm gonna have to sit this one out." Rick swiftly stated as he informed his friends that he wouldn't be able to join them.
"I'm afraid that I'm gonna have to pass to." Assim softly added with a guilty face as he informed Louis, Violet and the others that he wouldn't be able to play either.
"What? Why?" Louis asked as he, Mitch, Marlon, Ruby and Violet were surprised that Assim and Rick excluded themselves from the game.
"Because its time for me and Assim to take over Elias's and Charlie's shift on patrol." Brennan answered plainly as he reminded Louis that he and Assim were scheduled to relief Moreno and Rodriguez at the end of their shift on sentry duty with the Indian-American teenage boy nodding in agreement.
"Tsk, boy, do I feel sorry for you guys." Mitch stated sarcastically after hearing how Rick and Assim were up next to be sentry duty.
"Yeah, laugh it up Mitch...since you can bet your ass the Sarge isn't going to let you weasel your way out of patrol tomorrow afternoon." Assim countered in an equally sarcastic tone as he bluntly informed the combative brunette on how Kenny wouldn't let him sneak his way out of sentry duty tomorrow...much to his genuine surprise and horror.
"I'm afraid that I'm gonna have to take a rain check too, guys. Dr. Medina's going to need help in the medical bay." Brody softly stated with an equally guilty look on her face as she informed her friends that she was needed in the medical wing.
"It's alright Brody. You should go ahead before Doc Carlos gets all pissed." Marlon stated as he assured the 2nd redhead that he, Violet and the others understood; especially since they knew how their bases head doctor/surgeon, Dr. Carlos Medina could be a bit impatient.
"Sorry Clem." The older redhead softly added as she turned to Clementine as she was planning on joining in the game so she could get to know her, along with Rick and Assim.
"It's alright Brody. We can always talk later." Clem stated as she assured Brody that she wasn't upset and pointed out on how they could talk at a much later time.
"Okay. Anyway, it's nice to meet you and we're glad to have you on the team." Brody stated as she placed a gentle hand on Clem's right shoulder before she exited the rec room with Rick and Assim right behind her while welcoming the young African American teenage girl onto their team.
"Davey, what about you? Are you in or out?" Louis asked while turning to Blackwood, wondering if he would be joining them or be sitting out as well.
"Sure. I've got time." Davey answered as he informed his friends that he would be joining them; as he was free and wasn't needed anywhere else around the base.
"Okay, then. Let's play." Louis stated with a casual grin as he, Clem, Violet, Mitch, Ruby, Marlon and Davey walked over to the table where the older brunette and blonde teenage boy had been arm wrestling and pulled up additional chairs as they sat down, ready to play.
