Hello Readers: And welcome to my latest attempt at a re-write of The Caseys. However, I need to warn you that there will be some changes. Most importantly, Matt and Gabby will start by only having one child at the start of this story: their daughter, Sofia.
Chapter 1
Casey Home, Honolulu – 8:30 AM, May 1st, 2019
She was finally home with him and Gabby, his beautiful little girl: Sofia Grace Casey. And when he says that she's absolutely gorgeous, he means that from the bottom of his heart. His little girl is so damn cute, and she's definitely one of the biggest distractions he's been dealing with over the past couple of days as he's tried to get him, and his girls settled after getting home from the hospital. But today, there was no rooms for distractions due to the fact that it was time to start his newest project; one he's been talking with his friends about for months, which would be starting a company. And now that Sofia was home and resting in her crib, it was time for Matt to start putting his (almost) $3.9 Billion to work in the company, which was why he decided to invite some of his closest friends and advisors to join him here, at home. The home where Gabby and Sofia were currently fast asleep in their room upstairs.
And as they were currently fast asleep upstairs, that meant that they were all going to have to be quiet; well, that, and due to the fact that Gabby doesn't know that he was planning on having a meeting today…just a few days after she gave birth to their little girl. Yet, it was something he needed to do so that he could get some contracts signed; more specifically, employment and confidentiality agreements. Plus, he hasn't done a board meeting in a while, so he's decided to do so as he wasn't going to have one of his main advisors with him this weekend as Kelly and Stella are leaving for a vacation on Saturday. As a result, the rest of his employees (and the members of the board) are going to need to do something for him: pick up the slack wherever they can. Though, he's at least grateful that it wasn't just him, Gabby, Kelly, Stella, Jay, Alex, and Antonio anymore; rather, they had two new members of their team.
Members who need to sign employment contracts and confidentiality agreements, before they can get to work as doctors at the company. And just who might those two new employees be? Well, they would be Doctors William and Natalie Halstead; a couple who have been married for four days now, after having gotten married at the courthouse. Thank god he was able to get his contracts lawyer, Linda Errs, to fix the contract which Natalie had to sign; after all, her legal name was no longer Natalie Manning. Rather, her new legal name was Natalie Halstead due to the fact that she was married. And now that the contract was updated, it was ready for Natalie to sign and officially (along with a couple more new permanent employees) start her job. Though, the same can't be said about the other new members of his team: his mom and Christie. Yes, they were going to be signing contracts, but they're special.
After all, Christie has recently agreed to take a 10% stake in the company by investing, which means that he has more money to use to create his family company (a total of $4.3 billion). And boy, was that a lot of money; money which he plans on using to really work on the new headquarters and hire a bunch of new staff. But, that was for later. Right now, he just wants to get these contracts signed due to the fact that all of the positions his new employees are taking up are positions of trust. At least, a majority of them; there was though, one person who wasn't going to sign a contract: his niece Violet, who is going to be a summer intern at Casey. And while she may not be signing a contract, that doesn't mean that she isn't coming as he'd love to see her…and he knows that she wants to meet Sofia. So, that was mostly the reason why everybody was coming over: so that they could meet Sofia. The work was just a benefit.
Though, there was also another reason why he needed to get these documents signed: he needed to make sure that he got their consent to pay them with stock and/or at a later date in writing, or else he could get in trouble legally. Though, him getting in trouble legally was the last thing he had to worry about right now; rather, he needed to worry about getting in trouble with his mother-in-law. "Seriously? Is this what you're planning on doing on your first day home? Have a board meeting?" Turning around to face Camila, Matt signed when he saw her standing there with her hands on his hips. "Camila, I need to do this for the company. I should've done this long ago. And for what it's worth, Gabby is well aware of the fact that I'm having a meeting today." Giving Matt a bit of side-eye, Camila wasn't sure whether to believe him. "Sure, because I'd want my husband to work when I just gave birth a week ago."
Matt nodded, as he knew that was true. "Speaking of which, how's Sofia this morning?" Matt smiled when Camila asked him about Sofia. "She's fast asleep last time I…" And right then, that was when Matt heard it: the first cry of the morning. "You want me to go get her?" Matt shook his head. "No, I'm her dad." Camila agreed. "And that's why I have no idea why you think this is a good idea. Matt, Gabby just gave birth a few days ago. Are you sure that you really want to get to work right away? This is your dream life." Matt sighed when Camila said that, as he knew that was the truth; this was his dream life, and he should be enjoying it. And as he took a moment to think about it, he placed his hand on the folios he was about to set on the table. Folios he got for all of his new executives with the Casey company logo on it. "God, maybe this is a mistake." Camila sighed, as she could see that he was getting worried.
Not just because he wants to do good things with his money, but because he doesn't want to screw up. "I just don't want to screw up. I want to do this right, as I've asked a lot of people to come help me. People who've given their jobs up to help me, and I want to make sure that they know I'm being serious when I say that I'm going to take care of them." Camila agreed with Matt, as she could see the worried look which was on Matt's face at the moment. "Matt, I can see that you're worried. And you know what you need to do when you're worried because of your PTSD, you need to relax and take it easy. You need to sit down, breathe and take it easy. Hell, have you even thought about taking care of that before you start the company?" Matt sighed as Camila asked him that question, as he hasn't. "I think I've been concentrating on this for a while. It's a good distraction." Camila agreed. "Well, then how can I help?"
Matt smiled. "Can you do me a favor and get me my cheque book in my office? I need to write some cheques today." Confused, Camila looked at Matt. "Why do you need to write some cheques?" Matt smiled. "Living expenses. As part of the contracts, everybody gets $4,000 as living expenses each and every month." Camila smiled, as that sounded like a great idea. "I like that idea, such a great way to start paying everybody." Matt nodded, as he thought the same way. "I know. But, maybe I should cancel the meeting. I'm thinking too much, and I'm tired after last night. Sofia didn't sleep much. Then again, I feel the need to…" Stopping her son-in-law, Camila smiled. "Matt, take a breath and relax. I can see that you're conflicted. You want to help your friends and start the company, yet you also want to be a good dad and husband." Matt agreed, as that's precisely what he wants to do. "I want that more than anything."
Camila agreed, smiling. "Then how about you start with taking care of yourself? You smell." Matt laughed. "I did a workout before this." Camila nodded. "I see. You look much better. Does it help with your PTSD?" Matt nodded, as it most certainly does. "It does wonders for it." Camila smiled. "I'm glad. Now listen, you go upstairs and take a shower. Get in bed with Gabby and take it easy. I'll make you some breakfast." Matt smiled. "Maybe we can have some eggs in bed? I think Gabby would appreciate it." Camila agreed, as she knew that her daughter would very much appreciate it if they had eggs in bed. "I'll be up in 20 minutes. When I'm up there, I want you showered and in lounge wear. If you're going to work today, then you need rest first." Matt agreed with Camila prior to turning around and walking away so that he can go upstairs and take a shower ahead of starting his day.
But before he left, Camila decided to add something. "And Matt?" Turning to look at his mother-in-law, Matt smiled. "Yes?" Returning the smile, he flashed her, Camila decided to offer to do something for Matt. "Matt, if you change your mind about the meeting. Say, because you feel like you want to be with Sofia, or because Gabby asked you to cancel it; just say the word, and I'll take care of everything." Matt sighed as he heard Camila say that, as he knew what that was code for. "In other words, I'll help you cancel the meeting; which I strongly suggest you do, but only after you talk to Gabby about it?" Camila snickered, as she knew he'd understand. "Now, do you see where my daughter gets it?" Matt nodded, as he always knew that they were similar. "Oh, believe me. I've seen it before." Camila agreed, well aware that was the case. "Just go upstairs and take care of the girls." Matt agreed, ready to do just that.
Picking Sofia up in his arms once he was upstairs in his and Gabby's room to get her to stop crying, Matt smiled as he tapped her back and cuddled up to her; only to leave kisses on the top of her head as he held her close. "Yeah, there we go, Sofia. It's ok. Daddy's here. He's going to hold you, change you, kiss you. Yes, he is." Matt said, as he grabbed his beautiful baby girl's blanket this morning; only to carry her and her blanket to the changing table to get her changed. In the process, he heard his gorgeous wife's voice for the first time this morning after having woken her up by talking to Sofia. "You're cancelling that meeting you scheduled." Gabby said, having already been awake by the time Matt came in here. In fact, she was about to go get Sofia when he got her instead. So, it was understandable that Matt was confused as he turned his head and saw that Gabby was awake after hearing her voice. "You're awake?"
Gabby agreed, as she most certainly is awake. "It's hard to stay asleep when you're such a loud talker. I heard you downstairs with my mom." Matt agreed with Gabby as she told him that, only to lay Sofia down on her changing table and tickling her. "Yeah, there's daddy's little girl. Daddy loves you princess." Smiling as Matt said that, Gabby couldn't help but feel happy over the fact that Matt was finally a father to their little girl; still, that didn't mean that she wasn't sticking to her guns. "And that's precisely why you're cancelling the meeting you scheduled." Taking off Sofia's diaper, Matt went to tie it up; only to throw it into the garbage as he grabbed a wet wipe. "And is there a precise reason related to Sofia why I'm cancelling the meeting?" Gabby sighed as she looked at her husband, as he should already know why he was cancelling the meeting: it was due to the fact that this is their dream life.
They've always wanted to be parents, which is precisely why he needs to cancel so that he can enjoy the fact that he's a new dad. "Matt, this is your dream come true. You always wanted to be a dad. Do you really want to spend your first days working on the company, when you can instead concentrate on me and our little girl?" Matt nodded. "You know, you aren't the first person to advise me to cancel, as your mom did it before I came upstairs. She even said that she could call Antonio for me to get it cancelled." Gabby agreed with her husband, though she was a bit skeptical. "You better not be lying to me, just so that you can have intimate time with me. We aren't having sex anytime soon, as I just gave birth to Sofia." Matt shook his head, as that was the last thing he wanted from her; especially when she just gave birth to the little girl who's diaper he just finished changing, and who's PJ he just did up.
After all, she needed to rest after giving birth to their little girl. His princess, Sofia Grace, the most beautiful little girl in the entire world, who he was now holding in his arms shortly after picking her up from her changing table. "Believe me, that's the last thing I want to do with you when you need rest. I promise, babe." Gabby agreed with her husband, well aware that was the case as she proceeded to slip up in bed so that she could sit up. "Here, hand her over to me. I need to feed our little girl." Matt agreed with Gabby as he carried Sofia over to her this morning, smiling as he got ready to watch her feed her with her breast; something he always like to watch, especially since it's something only she can do as Sofia's mother. He's just so grateful that she's still here to be with Sofia, which is probably another reason why he needs to be here with her: to help her with her recovery after she just had surgery.
The surgery? Well, it was to remove her aneurysm. "How's your recovery going?" Matt said, as he laid Sofia down in Gabby's arms, only to sit down next to her on their bed as he watched her bring Sofia close to her chest. "It's ok. I'm mostly resting here. Would really like to do it with my husband, though." Matt agreed, as he knew that. He knew that she wanted to do it with him. "Yeah, I get that. I'm sorry for…" Matt sighed as he looked at Gabby, only to realize that he needs to be honest with her. "It's my PTSD." Turning her head when Matt said that, Gabby got a bit worried due to the fact that it was related to his PTSD (and therefore, his mental health). "Is it bad?" Matt sighed. "Listen, how about I go take a shower? Then, we can talk. Your mom is going to bring us breakfast." Gabby agreed with Matt as he said that. "Do me a favor and cancel the meeting? Matt, please. I just gave birth to Sofia."
Matt agreed with his wife as she said that, smiling. "I'll call them in the washroom before I hop in the shower." Gabby shook her head. "Do it now, I want to hear you do it." Matt agreed with Gabby as he reached into his pocket to grab his phone, only to open it so that he could call people who could cancel the meeting for him.
Reaching Kelly and Antonio this morning, Matt took a breath as he sat down on the edge of his and Gabby's bed with the phone on speakerphone, which might not have been a good idea, as Kelly ended up yelling this morning. "Well, if it isn't the CEO. God, are you really calling to give us a preview of what we're going to talk about? I already got the e-mail with the schedule for the meeting. You know, the e-mail you insisted I put on my phone!" Antonio laughed when he heard Kelly say that. "Hey bud, last time I checked, you almost forgot to cancel our 1 pm tee time last week, which you only remembered because of the e-mail I sent you earlier that day." Matt was surprised when he heard Antonio say that. "You almost forgot to cancel my last week without kids golf session?" Gabby looked at Matt when he said that. "You did not call it that." Matt gulped. "Yeah, I may have done that as a joke." Antonio snickered.
After all, he could hear that his sister was mad. "So, is this the call to tell us that the meeting is cancelled? Please, tell me it's cancelled." Hearing her brother say that, Gabby decided to ask the question. "Uhm, brother. I'm right here. You do realize that you still haven't come to meet your niece at our home. Are you really complaining that you aren't coming here today?" Matt then sat there, silent as he knew that he was in trouble. "Might it be related to the research you were supposed to complete?" Antonio sighed, as that was precisely what it was related to. "I may have spent the weekend on a date, instead of doing research." Gabby smiled. "Oh, do tell. Unless it's Brett." Antonio laughed. "Gabby, I'm never going to touch her again, you know that. You have nothing to worry about when it comes to that." Matt agreed. "And I have a restraining order against her for all of us, I promise." Gabby agreed.
After all, he was very protective of her. "But, back to what I need to say. Kelly, Antonio, can you guys call around and tell people that the meeting's cancelled? I'll just ask Linda Errs to do the contracts with you guys. I haven't printed them off, and I will just do it later. I think I was just happy and ready to get going because everything was falling into place. Gabby and Sofia are home, they finally found my mom." Gabby looked at Matt when he said that. "Really?" Matt agreed. "She was in Bloomington, IL. At a friend's place." Gabby agreed with her husband. "Good. Well, that just means we need to find my dad." Antonio agreed, as that was what I'm trying to do. "Yes, that's why I'm in Chicago. I wasn't going to say anything, but I was going to video call into the meeting with Jay." Matt agreed with Antonio, glad that was the case. "So, I'm not even coming because I'm still in Chicago." Matt then took a breath.'
After all, this was a part of the conversation which Kelly didn't need to be a part of. "Kelly, this is family. Do you…" Interrupting, Kelly went to say how he felt. "No, I get it. I know this is family related. Good luck Antonio." Hanging up, Kelly left the call to go call everybody else; meanwhile, Antonio stayed on to speak with Matt and Gabby. "So, about your dad." Matt said, as he climbed into bed with Gabby and Sofia, prior to wrapping his arm around her. "How's that coming along? I completely forgot you were in Chicago." Antonio agreed. "Hey, you have a lot on your mind. A new baby, Gabby, your PTSD. But, I've yet to find him. I'm going out with Intelligence today." Matt agreed. "Listen, I'm letting you know that I'm going to fly him here when you find him. I don't care if he's in the same city as me anymore, I just need him here with me and the family." Gabby looked up at Matt when he said that.
After all, she was surprised. "You really want him here, in Hawaii, with us?" Matt nodded. "Yes, because it'll make you happy. It'll make you relax and worry less about your father." Gabby agreed, well aware that was the case. She'll relax much more, simply due to the fact that she'll know where her father is. "Just find him, Antonio." Antonio agreed. "Gabby, I promise I'll find him. That way, he can meet his granddaughter." Gabby agreed, as she wants nothing more than to introduce Sofia to her abuelo. "I want nothing more than to introduce her to dad." Antonio agreed. "Listen, take it easy and relax. I'll worry about this; you worry about Sofia." Matt agreed, as he thought that was a great idea. "I like that idea." Gabby nodded, as she liked it too. "Me too." She said as she smiled. However, Matt knew the reality: she was faking the smile she had on her face due to the fact that they didn't have any news yet.
He could tell by the look on her face as he came out of the washroom this morning that Gabby wasn't happy with the news that they got from Antonio: that they haven't found her father. Though, that's also good news in his mind; something Matt hoped to make light of as he walked over to his dresser this morning. "You know, that was good news Antonio gave us today." Turning her head as she held Sofia on her chest, Gabby was offended by what Matt just said. "Antonio telling us that they didn't find my dad yet is good news?" Matt sighed, as it is good news. "Gabby, that means that they didn't find him in any state. Think about it. This means that he could still be out there. That there's a chance that he will meet Sofia." Gabby sighed, as that wasn't how she wanted to think; yet, she also knew it was the truth. Antonio not having found her dad at all is good news. "And he's not the only one searching Gabby, you know that."
Matt said, as he finished putting his deodorant on; only to walk over to her so that he can join her and Sofia in bed, where he hopes to cuddle up to his family. "And just who else is searching for him? Last time I checked, you're here." Matt agreed as he opened the covers to their bed, only to sit down and smile as he looked at Sofia this morning. "Well, he obviously has intelligence looking." Gabby agreed with Matt as she felt him wrap his arm around her, while also closing the covers on top of the both of them. After which, he proceeded to slip down in bed as he stroked Sofia's cheek. "And I have the firehouse searching too." Turning her head, Gabby was surprised. "Really?" Matt nodded. "I called Boden. I told him that we can't find your dad, and I sent him a picture. I asked him if he could get the crews to search for them. They all agreed to do so, as they still see us as family." Gabby snickered. "Well, they are family."
Matt agreed with his wife as he pressed his lips to the side of her head, well aware that they're family, which is precisely why they were helping with the search for her father. "Listen, how about you finish feeding Sofia? Then, I can put her in her crib. I'm sorry I scheduled a meeting. I just…I think I got ahead of myself and needed to just do something. I want to try and start paying people, which means that I need to get the company started." Gabby agreed, as she could understand that. "I get that. You want to make sure that you don't leave people stranded when they moved here to help us." Matt agreed with his wife, as that was precisely what he was worried about. "Though, Kelly is happy that he came, as he needed it after his dad died." Gabby agreed with her husband. "I think Will and Jay needed it as well." Matt agreed. "Speaking of Will, he wasn't very happy with the meeting we had planned it turns out."
Gabby agreed with Matt as she watched him stroke the side of Sofia's head once more. "Why wasn't he happy?" Matt laughed as he held his girls close. "Well, he did just get married." Turning her head, Gabby looked up at Matt. "Oh, damn. He's probably not too happy about that." Matt agreed with Gabby as he went to grab his phone. "Here, this is the text he sent me." Matt said, as he opened his phone and went to show Gabby the text message. 'Thanks for cancelling. And also, FU for making me wake up so early when I just got married!' Gabby was surprised when she read that. "Did he really send that to his boss?" Matt nodded, as that was precisely what he sent him. "Yes, yes he did." Shaking her head, Gabby sighed as she didn't believe that. "Wow, he has a lot of nerve." Matt agreed with his wife as he pressed his lips to the side of her head. "Reminds me of the woman I love. Not afraid to push boundaries."
Gabby smiled as Matt said that, only to look at their daughter as she fed her this morning. "Listen, let me finish feeding her, then you can burp her. How does that sound?" Matt smiled, as that sounded absolutely perfect. She could feed Sofia, while he could burp her. "Then, you want me to put her in the crib so that you can cuddle up to me some more?" Gabby sighed, as that was precisely what she wanted to do. "How did you know that was what I wanted to do?" Smiling, Matt looked at the woman he loves. "I know that you're hiding how truly sad you are that they haven't found your dad yet." Gabby nodded. "Thanks for being there for me, even though I know you aren't the biggest fan of him." Matt shook his head. "That's not true." Gabby looked up at Matt when he said that. "Ok. Maybe it's somewhat true. But, I'm a big fan of yours. And the last thing I want is for you to be sad, which is what your dad is doing."
Gabby agreed. "With him being missing, your sad when this should be the happiest time of our lives. We just had a baby, yet you're thinking about your dad. So, maybe we just concentrate on that right now?" Gabby agreed with Matt, more than ready to do just that. "And each other, which we're going to do as we cuddle in bed after I'm done feeding Sofia." Matt agreed, more than ready to hold her in his arms once she's done feeding Sofia.
