Buffy met up with her buds and the three of them started toward the school and classes.
"So I'm pretty sure Alex and them had a pack thing last night." Buffy told them. "I heard howling, but that wasn't the weird part of the night. Just as I left the Bronze I saw Tor and company being chewed out by Principal Flutie and acting like they were, I don't know, not willing to argue with him. And than he heard the howling too and he looked annoyed, he was looking up and I know he heard it. The willful avoidance spell means most people simply ignore it, but he didn't and he didn't like the sound. His behavior is as strange as Tor and company's was last night."
"Like that." Johnathan pointed and the girls looked where he was pointing and saw the bullies advancing on Lance, the boy they'd been hassling the night before.
"What do you think you're doing?" They heard Principal Flutie's voice growling and the teens immediately stopped and changed direction, heading for him. "Inside, I have something for you. Move!" The teens scrambled to obey. "And the rest of you get to class!"
"He's not usually that forceful." Willow stated. "I mean he tries, but he just doesn't come across as that...forceful most of the time. I guess he's trying harder."
"Seems to be working." Johnathan agreed. "Because he's got Tor and company jumping at his command. Anyway, we should get to class. I really don't want to test him in the mood he's currently in."
"Me either." Buffy agreed. "I'm still new and trying to live down the end of my time at Hemery." They, along with the rest of the students, hurried on to class.
Inside Bob Flutie led the four teens down the hall and to an empty classroom. But not entirely empty. "Breakfast is served." He told them, the four teens smiled and began chasing the little pig around until they caught it and tore it apart and consumed it, enjoying every last, bloody bite until there was nothing but bones left. "Get cleaned up and get to class and stay out of trouble!" He ordered them and they quietly filed out. Satisfied that he'd provided for his pack, Bob Flutie began to patrol his territory, Sunnydale High School, making sure there were no intruders.
Alex and his pack were also heading for class, none of them liked being locked in one form but running in the woods always left them feeling relaxed and happy. So their day was starting out well, until they ran into Principal Flutie who eyed them from the end of the hall.
"Why is he watching us?" Jesse asked. "And looking at us like, I don't know, like he doesn't like us or something?"
"I don't know." Alex found the Principle's gaze unsettling too. "He really doesn't look happy, does he? As far as I know, we haven't done anything wrong. Let's get to class, I don't want to cause any problems. Hopefully he's just in a mood and it'll pass." The others followed him and they continued down the hall trying to ignore the eyes boring into their backs.
"I'm feeling like turning my back on him is a bad idea right now." Cordelia murmured.
"I'm getting that feeling too." Alex agreed. "Something's off, but I have no idea what." They entered their classrooms.
From farther down the hall, Tor and company were also eying the other four teens and feeling the same way, something was off about them. They approached Principal Flutie.
"Their usual table at the Bronze smelled strange." Tor told Principal Flutie. "Weird, they weren't there and hadn't been since at least the day before but we could still smell it. They're different."
"And you heard them, same as I did." Heidi said. "They think there's something off about us. They didn't like turning their backs on us. "
"When you see them, keep an eye on them." Flutie told them. "I won't share my territory. Get to class." The teens agreed and headed off, leaving Flutie thinking, trying to figure out why those other four teens seemed different from all the others in his territory. And if they were threat. And then there were those howls, wolves were a threat to him and his. Why were there wolves so close to Sunnydale?
Buffy was heading to lunch later that day when she smelled something that reminded her of a vampire's leftovers. She followed the smell and looked through the window of an empty classroom. At first she didn't see anything and then she saw the small cage, open and bones. Something had died in that classroom and recently, judging by the smell. She needed to discuss this with the others, maybe they could help her figure out what the something was and if it was something to be concerned about. 'Oh, who am I kidding? Something died in the school, that's always something to be concerned about!'
A/N Spotted hyenas are matriarchal and it's only rarely that a male can be the Alpha. But both brown and stripped hyenas have male and female alphas and the brown's behavior is a lot more like wolves, with mated pairs.
