When Keigo and Rumi heard about Touya and Tenko's decision to have a weekend sleepover without them, they decided their inky choice would be to have their own sleepover at Rumi's house. Keigo would stay there the weekend, and go to school with her Monday morning before his ppmom picked him up after school.
So they were together Monday morning, getting ready to leave, when they heard the news on the radio her dad listened too every morning.
I don't really think you wanna hear the details of another emotional breakdown, and I don't really wanna write it, so all I'll tell you is that it wasn't pretty. It involved crying, denial, and Keigo's feathers flying out like porcupine needles and slamming into the walls while Rumi tried to calm him down without turning into a mess herself. It wasn't as bad as Tenko's reaction, but it wasn't fun either.
After all, Tenko might've been a bit closer to Touya, but Keigo and Rumi had known him first. They'd been the ones to reach out to him back when he was the new kid in class. They'd been the first friends Touya really had, and the first people outside of his family he trusted.
So, yeah, it was rough.
But eventually, Keigo became clear minded enough to think of one person they needed to call.
But when the phone picked up, instead of hearing their friend, they heard a different voice.
"Hello?"
Rumi and Keigo both blinked at each other for a moment, neither expecting the high, cheery voice int he other end.
Finally, Rumi spoke, knowing Keigo wouldn't want to with how rough he sounded. "Izuku?"
"Hi, Rumi! Tenko left his phone in the bedroom, he's outside."
"Oh."
Rumi covered the microphone and turned back to Keigo, whose eyes were still red and wings still trembling slightly. "Should we tell him? Or should we just ask for Tenko?"
Keigo ruffled his wings. "What if Tenko already knows? He could've seen the news."
"Then wouldn't Izuku know too?"
Keigo shrugged, so Rumi spoke back into the phone. "Could we talk to Tenko, baby bunny?"
"Sure! Let me grab him."
They heard a door open and footsteps, as well as a woman's voice growing closer. The TV, they realized together, shooting each other knowing and worried looks.
"Hey Ten- ko…?"
The footsteps silenced, obviously Izuku stopping, and all they could hear was the sound of the woman's voice on the TV. Now hearing more clearly, it was definitely the same woman, saying the same things as on their still playing TV.
Suddenly the camera turned on, showing Izuku's worried face, before the screen went black again as Izuku pressed the phone against his chest.
They could hear Hisashi and Inko's voices in the background, sounding panicked and worried and sad, but trying so so hard to be reassuring and strong. It was hard to tell what they were saying, but Keigo and Rumi could make out Inko's quiet reassurances, and Hisashi's please to calm down and stop scratching.
Finally, among it all, quiet and barely there, but there nonetheless, was obviously Tenko. A shaking voice, mumbling indiscernible words, crying, and just broken.
Rumi felt a pang in her heart, and could see the moment when Keigo did too. They'd been right, Tenko had heard.
But clearly Izuku hadn't.
There was a long moment where that was all they could hear. The woman speaking, Inko and Hisashi trying to calm down a panicking Tenko, and Izuku's breathing.
They traded looks, when they heard the moment Izuku must've realized what the woman on the TV was saying, because his breath hitched, then started again quicker.
Eventually they heard slow footsteps, and the TV and the scene in the living room slowly got louder as Izuku obviously moved closer. Then Izuku must've finally seen the TV, because he stopped breathing entirely for a long second before letting out a small squeak that would've been adorable if not for the situation and shaky breath it accompanied.
They traded worried pain filled glances.
Then, suddenly the sound of the TV went quiet, and everything went quiet except for Tenko. They could suddenly much more easily hear the mumbling.
It was still hard to understand, but they made out the gist of it.
Rumi saw the moment the last pieces Keigo was holding onto shattered, and she was certain she looked more or less the same.
Poor Tenko.
But who was he talking about killing?
They stayed quiet as Inko quietly asked Izuku to grab some napkins so they could try and clean up the mess, which neither of them were quiet sure what was, and remained quiet until they heard the door of the bedroom close behind Izuku.
Then Keigo spoke up for the first time, apparently realizing something Rumi hadn't. He called Izuku's name once or twice, growing increasingly worried at the lack of response, until Izuku finally hummed in acknowledgement.
Izuku pulled the phone back from his chest again, letting them get a good look at his face. His expression was eerily blank and empty, a terrifying look on the usually cheerful little boys face. He did look a bit surprised though.
Then Keigo's weak and hurt voice spoke again. "You hit the camera button, not the mute."
Oh.
