CERYS YARROW- AMBER MIDTHUNDER
District 9. The same day.
Cerys Yarrow stood in line with the other eligible young ladies in her district as the reaping ceremony got underway. She loathed the reaping ceremonies because of the threat of death that always came with it. Thankfully, her older sister Poppy had emerged from all her reapings unscathed and so far, she and her younger sister Sorrel had also been lucky. They only had 2 and more more reapings to get through respectively.
As the handler for the District 9 tributes got underway with the mandatory film that they showed every year from President Snow, Cerys desperately looked around for the faces of people she knew; as if they were good luck charms. She found her friend Millie in the row in front of hers, biting her nails in nervousness. Looking over to the boys section, she found her other friend Harvey refusing to even watch the film and looking at his feet instead. Other than her, he was the most vocal about his distaste for the Capitol.
Finally, as the movie was wrapping up, Cerys found Lark looking over in her direction. It was his last reaping ceremony and he was eager to be done with the whole sordid business. He'd been her friend ever since she started working at the bakery 3 years ago. Lark had taken Cerys under his wing and schooled her in the art. Eventually, she had developed feelings for him and he for her. Of course, neither of them had actually come out and said it, but it was one of those things that you just...knew.
"Wasn't that a fine show?" The handler asked as she walked up to the glass bowls with the name of every child between 12 and 18 in District 9 on slips of paper. "And now, let us find out who will have the honor of representing District 9 in the one hundred and twenty first annual Hunger Games; First the boys..." the handler reached in and pulled out a name. Luckily, it was a young boy that Cerys didn't know. It was easier to deal with a tribute's certain death if you didn't know them very well.
"And now, for the ladies..." the handler said as she reached her other hand into the other bowl and drew out a name. "Cerys Yarrow!"
For Cerys, it felt like time had skidded to a Jarring halt. She turned to see her parents and sisters gasping in horror, Millie having a mixture of sorrow and relief on her face, and Harvey just looking stunned, as if he hadn't expected her to be reaped.
"NO!" Lark exclaimed in horror as a couple of friends had to hold him back from running to Cerys. She stood tall and began walking to the podium. Cerys decided that she wasn't going to give the capitolites the pleasure of seeing her cry. She was resolved to say nothing as she stepped up onto the podium.
"Here they are, The tributes from District 9!" The handler exclaimed as she applauded for the tributes while Cerys tried to be brave while coming to terms with her impending death.
