Chapter 35
It would be a week before Fiyero managed to make his way back into the Vinkus. Glinda's announcement that the leader of the Munchkin uprising was killed when she tried to escape custody seemed to placate the masses. She also stated that until Munchkinland could be stabilized, she would be sending Councilman Arif to lead his people and report directly back to her. The Gale Force would be policing the entire country with the assistance of troops from the Vinkus and Gillikin.
Fiyero's parents, along with Glinda's, knew that the Gale Force would be stretched thin and their offer of troops was very much appreciated. The current leader of Oz promised that she would be making a visit to Munchkinland soon, which effectively pushed her wedding off again. Still, it was hardly a time to be thinking of a wedding given the current state of affairs in Oz.
"Yero, it is so good to see you," Elphaba smiled as he pulled her into his arms. He had just put his horse in the village stables and she met him just outside the building.
"It is so good to see you too future wife," he pulled her into his arms and kissed her.
"We should probably head back to the Emerald City and give Glinda a proper report," the green woman told him after they separated and began walking to the Mayor's office.
"Tomorrow. I am too tired and so are the horses. She got the gist of it right?" He asked.
"Yes. I used code for Boq to translate to avoid any looky loos," she confirmed.
"How are you doing?" He wanted to know as they entered the Mayor's office.
"As good as I can be. Ugabu's death was… it was not swift and she definitely suffered. I'm not sure how I feel about all of that. Had Sarah not had a spell on her, she would have been permanently dead. Mombey, obviously evil, was murdered. No trial, no formal proceedings. Still, at the end, Ugabu gave her life to save Sarah's. I…" Elphaba heaved a sigh.
"It's not a pretty picture but it is the one we are stuck with. Luckily, it's over," Fiyero said, taking her hand in his and giving it a squeeze. She nodded.
"Sir, it is good to see you," Sergeant Timothy Schultz greeted the two near the building entrance.
"Good to see you. Don't you have a wife to get to?" Fiyero winked.
"Yes, sir," Timothy smirked and quickly left the building.
"So much for their honeymoon huh?" Elphaba asked as they continued to the Mayor's office.
"I will make sure ours is not interrupted," he waggled his eyebrows.
"Oh, you can predict the future now?" She gave him a look.
"I have my ways," he chuckled. They both knew that he wouldn't be able to prevent any trouble but it was a nice thought.
"Ah Prince Fiyero, it is good to see you," Mayor Smythe smiled at the couple.
"Good to see you. Miss Elphaba and I will be staying until the morning. The troops here will be heading home after they remove their temporary quarters. Hopefully, things will go back to being quiet here," Fiyero smiled back.
"Quiet would be nice," the town leader chuckled.
"It always makes me nervous," Elphaba admitted.
"Well hopefully you can reach some sort of quiet back in the Emerald City," Smythe said.
"With any luck," she smiled.
"Come to dinner with me and my wife. It is the least we can do on your last night here," the mayor offered.
"We'd be delighted," Fiyero smiled.
"I'll have Fevzi get you in about an hour," Smythe said.
"Great. Luckily, Mrs. Marfeo held onto our room," the Prince said. With that the couple left the office and headed back to the inn. On their way, they bumped into Corporal Roth.
"We should be ready for a morning departure sir, ma'am," the Corporal informed them.
"Gone back to the sir and the ma'ams huh?" Fiyero gave him a smirk.
"I'm tired," Roth chuckled.
"Well get some grub and some sleep and we'll see you in morning," Fiyero told him. The Corporal nodded and headed off.
"He's due a vacation after this," Elphaba said.
"Agreed. Do you think we have time to…" Fiyero waggled his eyebrows.
"You're incorrigible. You need a quick washing before we head to dinner. After dinner though," she teased.
"I'm going to hold you to that," he chuckled as they entered the inn.
