A Deadlier Foe
The Avengers hurried to reach the Symbiote Bio-Dome, already they could hear the screams which meant that they were either already being turned, or were under attack. It was surprising to hear it so soon, normally it took a while yet before the Bio-Dome took full effect. That was when they noticed something else.
Iron-Girl was the one to point it out. "The dome it looks...bigger somehow?"
"Bigger than the others, yeah." Iron-Man agreed.
"Any ideas?" Speed Demon queried.
They were quiet for a moment, stopping at the edge of the Bio-Dome, taking a moment to take in it's much larger size, It was finally Wasp who came to a realization that might explain what they were dealing with.
"Guys, do you think...could it be bigger because there's, more than one?" She asked. "I mean, Mind-Flayers form the core of these Bio-Domes, what if this one's bigger because there's more than one Mind-Flayer?"
"Oh shit, that's a strong possibility." Spider-Boy agreed. "Alright, that'll mean likely two or more cores. We better get to it then."
They all nodded in agreement and made their way into the dome, ready to fight.
"Same tactics?" Black Panther asked.
White Tiger considered. "Maybe, I'm not sure if-"
Speed Demon spoke up. "At the very least I'll find the cores, wish me luck."
With that she took off before the others could say anything.
Immediately after she did so, they found themselves facing problems. At least three people already infected and two Demodogs were already rampaging towards them.
"Whoa, what the-?" Black Panther called out.
They reacted quickly and began to quickly fight back, but they were still shocked to discover that they were dealing with far more dangerous and aggressive enemies. Despite their efforts more were coming up and they were truly startled at the aggression.
"This is getting out of hand, think it's because there's more than one Mind-Flayer?" Batgirl asked.
Blue Beetle replied. "I think so, hey...careful."
She quickly ducked but knocked out the infected person, they were quickly subduing the infected carefully while focusing on taking out the Demodogs and Demogorgons.
"How are they so...this isn't right." Spider-Boy called out worriedly.
"Guys!" White Tiger screamed.
They had just finished dealing with their attackers, only to turn and see a full grown Demogoron looming over them, Spider-Boy hadn't been able to properly sense it with his Spider-Sense due to the danger all around them, so it was going off so much he had pretty much tuned it into a low buzz for the sake of his sanity.
"Oh not good." Iron-Man remarked as it was about to attack.
Just then, before it could, it was suddenly blasted away and was killed on impact.
They were startled by this but then, quickly, they saw the source of the attack that had repelled the Demogorgon. It was Jane.
"Mom." White Tiger gasped.
She smirked just as the other adults arrived.
"We got here just in time." She said.
That was when Iron-Girl noticed. "Where are…?"
She was about to ask what had happened to their loved ones, but luckily they got their answer as they saw their loves also moving in. They had been fighting through some infected people and had managed to subdue them before reaching them.
"This is intense, I'm pretty sure this wasn't the case last time you guys did this?" Nathan remarked.
Jessica shook her head. "So, what's the story guys?"
They quickly explained their theory and the danger they were facing, the increased aggression of their attackers.
"Where's K-Speed Demon?" Holly asked.
Spider-Boy explained. "She went off to find the cores, same as she did previously, I just hope it's okay."
"I'm fine."
They turned to see Speed Demon had returned.
"I found them, one of them isn't too far, just around the corner. The other is further away however." Speed Demon explained. "We better hurry, before more of them come."
They all nodded and went to go and do just that, hurrying until they found the first core, just as Speed Demon explained.
"I got this one." Iron-Man said.
With that he attacked and destroyed the core. The dome fluctuated and there was a shriek, but it didn't collapse. It was still going strong.
They soon realized that this had the unexpected side effect, it was drawing more Demodogs towards them.
"That got their attention." Black Panther muttered.
"No choice." Spider-Boy remarked. "We've gotta keep pushing through.
They all nodded, the Avengers got to work dealing with the Demodogs, aided by Jane. The others dealt with the infected people. As they did so, Mike and Will couldn't help but note Jake's behaviour.
"He's so different here." Will noted. "More confident, stronger…"
Mike nodded. "Yeah, he's a real leader here."
They both smiled at that and continued to focus as they fought on. It took them a little longer this time, due to the larger volume of enemies, but they noticed that some of the infected were already turning back to normal, likely due to the damage already done to the Bio-Dome thanks to destroying one core.
"That could help us." Steve noted.
Rounding another corner they saw another pair of Demodogs which Jane simply blasted aside, allowing them to hurry on until finally, they reached where Speed Demon had located the second core.
"This is it here, we-" She began, only to stop.
The reason she stopped was their path to the core was blocked by another infected human, but not one any of them expected.
"Oh that is not good." Spider-Boy groaned.
Immediately Wasp called out. "Leave this to us, stand back."
Their families and beloveds did so as they finally saw just who the infected human before them was. It was already bad enough to be fighting this man, but with a Symbiote empowering him, it was going to be a nightmare. It was Wilson Fisk.
They just barely had time to get out of the way as the Avengers faced the empowered and enraged Fisk who charged right at them. They narrowly avoided his attack and found themselves scattered, this made them nervous as he turned around, it was clear he could attack any of them at any time, whenever he wanted. They could only react to it. The only one with any advance warning he was going to attack was Spider-Boy and as he had noted before, his Spider-Sense wasn't helping here as there was just too much danger all around.
"NO!"
It then happened and in that moment, while stilled masked and wearing his suit, he wasn't Spider-Boy anymore, he was Jake Wheeler-Byers, for Kingpin had indeed attacked again, this time causing panic and shouts as he knocked Jessica to the ground and now stood over her, arms raised, ready to bring them down right on her skull.
