Erin Lindsay and Jay Halstead were driving down a quiet road, enjoying the sunny day. Erin was behind the wheel, and Jay was in the passenger seat, leaning back and soaking in the breeze. They exchanged playful glances, the kind that hinted at more than just friendship.

"You know, Jay," Erin said with a smirk, "if you keep looking at me like that, we might have to pull over."

Jay grinned. "Oh yeah? And what would we do then?"

Erin laughed, her eyes sparkling. "I think you know exactly what we'd do."

Just as Jay was about to respond, his expression changed. He sat up straight, eyes wide. "Erin, stop the truck!"

Erin's smile vanished as she slammed on the brakes. The truck screeched to a halt. In front of them, a small boy stood in the middle of the road, looking lost and scared.

"Oh my God, is he okay?" Erin asked, her voice filled with concern.

Jay quickly unbuckled his seatbelt and jumped out of the truck, running towards the boy. "Hey, buddy, are you alright? Where are your parents?"

The boy didn't respond, his eyes wide with fear. Erin followed, her heart pounding. Jay knelt down to the boy's level, trying to make eye contact.

"It's okay, you're safe now," Jay said gently. "Can you tell us your name?"

The boy remained silent, tears welling up in his eyes. Jay glanced at Erin, who gave him an encouraging nod. Jay tried again, his voice even softer.

"Hey, it's alright. We're here to help. Can you tell me your name?"

After a moment, the boy whispered, "Tommy."

Erin and Jay exchanged relieved looks. "Hi, Tommy," Erin said, her voice soothing. "We're going to help you find your parents, okay?"

Tommy nodded, still holding back tears. Jay gave him a reassuring smile. "You're safe with us, Tommy. Let's get you out of the road."

Together, they led Tommy to the side of the road, determined to reunite him with his family.

As they led Tommy to the side of the road, Erin and Jay exchanged a look of determination. They needed to find his parents quickly.

"Tommy, do you remember where you last saw your mom or dad?" Jay asked gently.

Tommy shook his head, his small hand gripping Jay's tightly. Erin knelt down beside him, trying to offer some comfort.

"It's okay, Tommy. We're going to figure this out together," she said softly. "Do you know your mom or dad's phone number?"

Tommy hesitated, then nodded slowly. "Mommy's number is… um… 555-1234."

Jay quickly pulled out his phone and dialed the number. It rang a few times before a frantic voice answered. "Hello?"

"Hi, this is Jay Halstead. We found your son, Tommy, on the road. He's safe with us," Jay said, relief evident in his voice.

"Oh my God, thank you! Where are you? I'll come right away," the voice on the other end replied, filled with gratitude.

Jay gave her their location and hung up. "Your mom is on her way, Tommy. You're going to be just fine."

Tommy's eyes brightened a little, and he managed a small smile. Erin ruffled his hair gently. "See? Everything's going to be okay."

A few minutes later, a car pulled up, and a woman jumped out, running towards them. "Tommy!"

"Mommy!" Tommy cried, breaking free from Jay's hand and running into his mother's arms.

Erin and Jay watched as the mother hugged her son tightly, tears of relief streaming down her face. She looked up at them, her eyes filled with gratitude. "Thank you so much. I don't know what I would have done without you."

Jay smiled. "We're just glad we could help."

Erin nodded, feeling a sense of satisfaction. "Take care, Tommy. Stay safe."

As they walked back to the truck, Jay glanced at Erin. "You did good back there."

Erin smiled. "We both did. Now, let's get back to our day."

They climbed into the truck, the sun still shining brightly, and drove off, ready for whatever came next.

Erin and Jay drove through the city, their minds focused on the task at hand. The address they had for Tommy's abductor led them to a quiet, suburban neighborhood. As they approached the house, they parked a few houses down to avoid drawing attention.

Jay turned off the engine and looked at Erin. "This is it. Ready?"

Erin nodded, her expression serious. "Let's get Tommy back."

They exited the truck and approached the house cautiously. The neighborhood was eerily quiet, with only the occasional sound of birds chirping. Jay motioned for Erin to take the lead, and they moved towards the front door.

Erin knocked firmly, and they waited. After a few moments, the door creaked open slightly. They exchanged a quick glance before pushing the door open and stepping inside.

The scene that greeted them was horrifying. The abductor and Tommy's real parents lay on the floor, shot dead. Blood pooled around their bodies, and the air was thick with the metallic scent.

Erin's heart pounded in her chest as she scanned the room. "Jay, over there," she whispered, pointing to a corner where a small figure was huddled.

Tommy was hiding in the corner, his eyes wide with terror. He was shaking, his small body curled up tightly.

Jay approached slowly, his voice gentle. "Tommy, it's okay. We're here to help you."

Tommy looked up, tears streaming down his face. He didn't move, too scared to react.

Erin knelt down beside Jay, her voice soft and soothing. "Tommy, you're safe now. We're going to take you somewhere safe."

Tommy hesitated, then slowly reached out to Jay, who gently lifted him into his arms. "We've got you, buddy. You're safe with us."

As they carried Tommy out of the house, Erin called for backup to handle the crime scene. They needed to get Tommy to safety and figure out what had happened.

Back in the truck, Tommy clung to Jay, still trembling. Erin glanced back at him, her heart aching for the scared little boy. "We'll get you somewhere safe, Tommy. I promise."

Jay nodded, his expression determined. "We'll find out who did this and make sure they pay."

With Tommy safely in their care, they drove to Med.

Erin and Jay arrived at Chicago Med, the city's bustling hospital, with Tommy still clinging to Jay. They were met by Dr. Will Halstead, Jay's brother, who had been briefed on the situation.

"Hey, Will," Jay greeted, his voice tense. "We need to get Tommy checked out. He's been through a lot."

Will nodded, his expression serious. "Of course. Let's get him into an exam room."

They followed Will through the busy corridors of the hospital, finally reaching a quiet room where Tommy could be examined. Will gently took Tommy from Jay's arms and set him on the exam table.

"Hey, Tommy," Will said softly. "I'm Dr. Will. I'm just going to make sure you're okay, alright?"

Tommy nodded, still looking scared but a bit more at ease with Jay and Erin nearby. Will began his examination, checking for any injuries or signs of trauma.

Erin and Jay stood by, watching closely. "How's he doing?" Erin asked, her concern evident.

Will finished his examination and looked up. "Physically, he's okay. No injuries, just a bit shaken up. But we should get a child psychologist to talk to him. He's been through a lot."

Jay nodded. "Thanks, Will. We appreciate it."

Will gave them a reassuring smile. "No problem. I'll arrange for a psychologist to come by. In the meantime, you two should get some rest. It's been a long day."

Erin and Jay exchanged a look. "We'll stay with him," Erin said firmly. "He needs to see familiar faces right now."

Will nodded, understanding. "Alright. I'll be back soon."

As Will left the room, Erin and Jay sat down beside Tommy, offering him comfort and reassurance. They knew the road ahead would be tough, but they were determined to help Tommy through it.

"You're safe now, Tommy," Erin said softly, holding his hand. "We're not going anywhere."

Jay nodded, giving Tommy a reassuring smile. "We'll be right here with you, buddy. You're not alone."

With Erin and Jay by his side, Tommy began to relax, knowing he was in safe hands. The journey to healing had just begun, but with the support of his new friends, he was ready to face it.

As Erin and Jay sat with Tommy in the quiet exam room at Chicago Med, the door opened, and Dr. Daniel Charles, the hospital's chief psychiatrist, walked in. He gave them a warm smile, his presence immediately calming.

"Hi there, I'm Dr. Charles," he said gently, addressing Tommy. "I'm here to talk with you for a bit, if that's okay."

Tommy looked at Erin and Jay, who both nodded encouragingly. "It's okay, Tommy," Erin said softly. "Dr. Charles is here to help."

Tommy nodded slowly, still holding onto Erin's hand. Dr. Charles pulled up a chair and sat down at Tommy's level. "I know you've been through a lot today, Tommy. Can you tell me a little about what happened?"

Tommy hesitated, glancing at Erin and Jay for reassurance. Jay gave him a gentle smile. "It's alright, buddy. You can tell Dr. Charles anything."

With a deep breath, Tommy began to speak, his voice trembling. "I was with my mommy and daddy, and then… then there was a loud noise. And they fell down, and the lady took me."

Dr. Charles nodded, his expression compassionate. "That must have been very scary for you. But you're very brave for telling me."

Tommy's eyes filled with tears, and Erin squeezed his hand gently. "You're safe now, Tommy. We're going to make sure nothing bad happens to you."

Dr. Charles continued to speak with Tommy, helping him process the traumatic events. Erin and Jay stayed close, offering their support. After a while, Dr. Charles stood up and addressed Erin and Jay.

"He's doing remarkably well, considering everything he's been through," Dr. Charles said. "But he'll need ongoing support and therapy to help him cope with the trauma."

Erin nodded. "We'll make sure he gets everything he needs."

Jay looked at Tommy, who was starting to relax a bit more. "You're a strong kid, Tommy. We're proud of you."

Dr. Charles smiled. "I'll arrange for a follow-up session and make sure he's connected with the right resources."

As Dr. Charles left the room, Erin and Jay stayed with Tommy, their presence a comforting anchor for the young boy. They knew the road ahead would be challenging, but they were committed to helping Tommy heal and find a sense of normalcy again.

"You're not alone, Tommy," Erin said softly. "We'll be here every step of the way."

Jay nodded, his expression determined. "We'll get through this together."

With Erin and Jay by his side, Tommy began to feel a glimmer of hope. He knew he was in safe hands, and that made all the difference.

As the evening wore on, the exhaustion of the day's events began to take its toll on Tommy. His eyelids grew heavy, and he leaned against Jay, seeking comfort and security. Jay wrapped his arms around the boy, holding him close.

"It's okay, Tommy," Jay whispered softly. "You're safe now. You can rest."

Tommy's eyes fluttered shut, and within moments, he was fast asleep, his small body finally relaxing in Jay's protective embrace. Erin watched them, a tender smile on her face.

"He's been through so much," Erin said quietly. "But he's a strong kid."

Jay nodded, gently rocking Tommy. "Yeah, he is. We'll make sure he gets through this."

A nurse peeked into the room, her expression softening when she saw Tommy asleep in Jay's arms. "We have a room ready for him if you'd like to lay him down," she offered.

Jay shook his head. "He's fine right here for now. I don't want to move him and risk waking him up."

The nurse nodded in understanding. "Alright. Just let us know if you need anything."

As the nurse left, Erin and Jay settled into a comfortable silence, both keeping a watchful eye on Tommy. The room was quiet, the only sound being the soft hum of the hospital's air conditioning.

Erin glanced at Jay, her expression thoughtful. "You know, you're really good with him."

Jay smiled, looking down at the sleeping boy. "Thanks. I just want to make sure he feels safe."

Erin reached out and squeezed Jay's shoulder. "You're doing a great job. We'll get through this together."

Jay nodded, feeling a sense of solidarity. "Yeah, we will."

As the night wore on, Erin and Jay remained by Tommy's side, their presence a comforting anchor for the young boy.

As the night deepened, the quiet of the hospital room was suddenly shattered by a piercing scream. Tommy jolted awake in Jay's arms, his eyes wide with terror. He began to cry, his small body trembling with fear.

Jay tightened his hold on Tommy, his voice soothing. "Hey, hey, it's okay, Tommy. You're safe. It was just a bad dream."

Erin quickly moved closer, her heart aching at the sight of Tommy's distress. "Tommy, it's alright. We're here with you."

Tommy's cries continued, his fear overwhelming him. Jay gently rocked him, trying to calm him down. "Shh, buddy. You're safe now. No one can hurt you."

Erin reached out and stroked Tommy's hair, her voice soft and comforting. "You're not alone, Tommy. We're right here."

Gradually, Tommy's sobs began to subside, though he still clung to Jay, his small hands gripping tightly. Jay continued to hold him close, whispering reassurances.

"It's okay to be scared," Jay said softly. "But you're safe with us. We won't let anything happen to you."

Tommy buried his face in Jay's shoulder, his breathing slowly evening out. Erin watched them, her heart heavy with empathy. She knew that the trauma Tommy had experienced wouldn't be easy to overcome, but she was determined to help him through it.

"You're doing great, Tommy," Erin said gently. "You're so brave."

Tommy sniffled, looking up at Erin with tear-filled eyes. "Will you stay with me?"

Erin smiled, her eyes warm. "Of course, we will. We're not going anywhere."

Jay nodded, giving Tommy a reassuring squeeze. "We'll be right here, buddy. You're safe."

With Erin and Jay's comforting presence, Tommy began to relax again. The fear that had gripped him slowly loosened its hold, replaced by a sense of security.

As the night wore on, Erin and Jay remained vigilant, keeping a close watch over Tommy. The hospital room was quiet again, with only the soft hum of the air conditioning and the occasional distant sound of hospital activity.

Tommy slept fitfully, occasionally whimpering in his sleep. Each time, Jay would gently soothe him, whispering reassurances until he settled back down. Erin sat nearby, her eyes never leaving the boy.

"He's been through so much," Erin said quietly, her voice filled with empathy. "I can't imagine how scared he must be."

Jay nodded, his expression serious. "We'll do everything we can to help him. He's a tough kid, but he shouldn't have to go through this alone."

As dawn approached, the first light of morning began to filter through the hospital window. Tommy stirred, slowly waking up. He blinked sleepily, looking around the room before his eyes landed on Jay and Erin.

"Good morning, Tommy," Erin said softly, giving him a warm smile. "How are you feeling?"

Tommy rubbed his eyes, still looking a bit groggy. "Better," he whispered, his voice small.

Jay smiled, ruffling Tommy's hair gently. "That's good to hear, buddy. You're safe with us."

Just then, Dr. Will Halstead entered the room, carrying a tray with breakfast. "Good morning, everyone. I brought some food for Tommy."

Tommy's eyes lit up at the sight of the tray. "Thank you," he said shyly.

Will set the tray down on the table beside the bed. "You're welcome, Tommy. How are you feeling this morning?"

Tommy nodded, managing a small smile. "Better."

Will smiled back. "That's great to hear. Eat up, and we'll talk more later."

As Tommy began to eat, Erin and Jay exchanged a look of relief. They knew there was still a long road ahead, but seeing Tommy start to recover gave them hope.

"We'll get through this," Erin said quietly, her eyes meeting Jay's.

Jay nodded, his expression determined. "Together."

With the support of Erin, Jay, and the team at Chicago Med, Tommy was on the path to healing.

Later that morning, Erin, Jay, and Tommy arrived at the district. The bullpen was bustling with activity as officers and detectives went about their work. Erin and Jay led Tommy through the busy room, keeping him close.

As they entered, Trudy Platt looked up from her desk and gave them a nod. "Welcome back. How's the little guy doing?"

"He's hanging in there," Jay replied, giving Tommy a reassuring smile. "We thought it might be good for him to see where we work."

Platt's expression softened. "Good idea. Come on, Tommy, let's show you around."

Tommy looked up at Erin and Jay, who both nodded encouragingly. "It's okay, Tommy. Sergeant Platt is really nice," Erin said.

Platt led them through the bullpen, pointing out different areas and explaining what each one was for. Tommy listened intently, his eyes wide with curiosity. As they walked, several officers and detectives greeted him warmly, making him feel welcome.

"Over here is where we keep all the case files," Platt said, showing Tommy a row of filing cabinets. "And this is where we have our briefings."

Tommy nodded, taking it all in. "It's big," he said quietly.

Erin smiled. "It is, but it's also a place where we help people, just like we helped you."

Jay knelt down beside Tommy. "And if you ever need anything, you can always come to us. We're here for you."

Tommy managed a small smile, feeling a bit more at ease. "Thank you."

Just then, Voight walked over, his expression serious but kind. "Hey, Tommy. How are you holding up?"

Tommy looked up at Voight, his eyes wide. "I'm okay."

Voight nodded. "Good to hear. You're a brave kid."

Erin and Jay exchanged a look of gratitude with Voight. "Thanks, Sarge," Erin said.

Voight gave them a nod. "Keep up the good work. And Tommy, if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask."

As Voight walked away, Erin and Jay continued to show Tommy around, making sure he felt safe and supported. The bullpen, usually a place of intense work and investigation, had become a sanctuary for Tommy, a place where he knew he was protected.

By the time they finished the tour, Tommy seemed more relaxed, his initial fear and anxiety starting to fade. Erin and Jay knew there was still a long road ahead, but they were committed to helping Tommy every step of the way.

"You're part of our family now, Tommy," Erin said softly. "And we take care of our own."

Jay nodded, giving Tommy a reassuring smile. "Always."

With Erin and Jay by his side, Tommy felt a sense of belonging and safety. He knew that no matter what happened, he had found a place where he was truly cared for.

As Erin, Jay, and Tommy settled into the bullpen, a social worker approached them. She was a kind-looking woman with a warm smile and a gentle demeanor.

"Hi, I'm Sarah," she introduced herself, extending a hand to Erin and Jay. "I'm a social worker here to help Tommy."

Erin shook her hand. "Nice to meet you, Sarah. This is Tommy."

Sarah knelt down to Tommy's level, her voice soft and reassuring. "Hi, Tommy. I'm here to help you. How are you feeling?"

Tommy looked at Erin and Jay for reassurance before answering. "I'm okay," he said quietly.

Sarah smiled warmly. "That's good to hear. I know you've been through a lot, and I'm here to make sure you get all the help you need."

Jay nodded, appreciating Sarah's gentle approach. "We want to make sure Tommy gets the best care possible."

Sarah nodded. "Absolutely. I'll be working with him to provide support and therapy to help him process everything that's happened. We'll also be looking into finding a safe and loving environment for him."

Erin's expression softened. "Thank you, Sarah. We just want what's best for him."

Sarah stood up, addressing both Erin and Jay. "I understand. I'll be in touch with you both regularly to keep you updated on Tommy's progress. For now, I'll take him to a quieter room where we can talk and get to know each other better."

Tommy looked up at Erin and Jay, a hint of anxiety in his eyes. Erin knelt down beside him, her voice soothing. "It's okay, Tommy. Sarah is here to help you. We'll be right here if you need us."

Jay gave Tommy a reassuring smile. "You're in good hands, buddy. We'll see you soon."

Tommy nodded, feeling a bit more at ease. He took Sarah's hand, and they walked towards a quieter area of the precinct. Erin and Jay watched them go, their hearts heavy but hopeful.

"He's in good hands," Jay said, trying to reassure himself as much as Erin.

Erin nodded. "Yeah, he is. And we'll be here for him every step of the way."

As they returned to their desks, Erin and Jay knew that while the journey ahead would be challenging, they had taken the first crucial steps in helping Tommy find safety and healing. With the support of the social worker and their own unwavering commitment, they were determined to ensure Tommy's future was bright and secure.

Erin and Jay returned to their desks in the bullpen, diving into their work while keeping an ear out for any updates on Tommy. The precinct was busy, with officers and detectives moving about, discussing cases, and making calls. Despite the activity around them, Erin and Jay remained focused, their thoughts never straying far from Tommy.

Hours passed, and the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the room. Erin was reviewing case files while Jay was on the phone, coordinating with another department. The atmosphere was tense but productive.

Suddenly, a piercing scream echoed through the precinct, causing everyone to stop in their tracks. Erin and Jay immediately recognized the voice—it was Tommy.

They bolted from their desks and rushed towards the source of the scream. As they neared the room where Tommy and Sarah, the social worker, had been talking, they found Tommy standing in the doorway, his face pale and eyes wide with terror.

"Tommy!" Erin called out, her voice filled with concern.

Tommy ran towards them, tears streaming down his face. Jay scooped him up into his arms, holding him tightly. "It's okay, buddy. We're here. You're safe."

Sarah emerged from the room, looking shaken but composed. "He had a flashback," she explained, her voice calm but concerned. "We were talking, and something triggered a memory. I'm so sorry."

Erin nodded, her heart aching for Tommy. "It's not your fault, Sarah. He's been through so much."

Jay gently rocked Tommy, trying to soothe him. "Shh, it's okay, Tommy. You're safe now. No one can hurt you."

Tommy clung to Jay, his small body trembling. Erin reached out and stroked his hair, her voice soft and comforting. "We're right here, Tommy. You're not alone."

Sarah stepped closer, her expression empathetic. "I'll arrange for a trauma specialist to see him. He needs more support than I can provide right now."

Erin nodded, grateful for Sarah's quick action. "Thank you, Sarah. We'll do whatever it takes to help him."

As Sarah made the necessary arrangements, Erin and Jay stayed with Tommy, their presence a comforting anchor for the frightened boy. They knew the road to recovery would be long and challenging, but they were committed to helping Tommy every step of the way.

"You're safe with us, Tommy," Jay whispered, holding him close. "We'll get through this together."

With Erin and Jay by his side, Tommy began to calm down, finding solace in their unwavering support. The journey ahead was uncertain, but with the love and care of those around him, Tommy had a chance to heal and find peace.

As Erin and Jay sat with Tommy in the bullpen, Sarah, the social worker, approached them with a serious expression. She knelt down to Tommy's level, her voice gentle.

"Tommy, I need to talk to Erin and Jay for a moment, okay? I'll be right back," she said softly.

Tommy nodded, still holding onto Jay's hand. Sarah stood up and motioned for Erin and Jay to step aside. They followed her to a quieter corner of the bullpen.

"What's going on, Sarah?" Erin asked, her concern evident.

Sarah took a deep breath. "I've spoken with my supervisors, and given the circumstances, Tommy will need to be placed in temporary care. We need to ensure he's in a safe and stable environment while we sort everything out."

Jay's expression hardened. "Temporary care? What does that mean for Tommy?"

Sarah looked at them both sympathetically. "It means he'll be placed with a foster family for now. We need to make sure it's a good home, and he'll receive the support he needs. But it's important for his safety and well-being."

Erin's eyes filled with concern. "Is there no other option? He's been through so much already."

Jay stepped forward, his voice firm. "What if Erin and I take him? We can provide a stable environment, and he already trusts us."

Sarah looked surprised but thoughtful. "That's a big responsibility. Are you both sure you're ready for that?"

Erin nodded, her expression resolute. "Absolutely. We care about Tommy, and we want to make sure he's safe and supported."

Jay added, "We'll do whatever it takes to help him heal. He needs familiar faces right now."

Sarah considered their offer for a moment before nodding. "Alright. If you're both committed to this, I'll start the necessary paperwork. But you'll need to go through the proper channels to become his temporary guardians."

Erin and Jay exchanged a determined look. "We'll do it," Erin said firmly.

They returned to Tommy, who looked up at them anxiously. Erin knelt down beside him, her voice gentle. "Tommy, Jay and I are going to take care of you. You'll stay with us for now, and we'll make sure you're safe."

Tommy's eyes filled with tears, but this time they were tears of relief. "Really? You'll take care of me?"

Jay hugged him tightly. "Absolutely, buddy. You're coming home with us."

With Erin and Jay's reassurance, Tommy began to feel a sense of hope. He knew that no matter what happened, he had found people who cared deeply for him and would always be there to support him.

With the decision made, Erin and Jay began the process of becoming Tommy's temporary guardians. Sarah guided them through the necessary paperwork and procedures, ensuring everything was in order. It was a whirlwind of activity, but Erin and Jay were determined to make it work.

Later that evening, they brought Tommy to Erin's apartment, which they had quickly prepared to make him feel at home. Erin had set up a cozy space for Tommy in the spare bedroom, complete with a few toys and a nightlight to help him feel safe.

As they entered the apartment, Tommy looked around, his eyes wide with curiosity. "Is this where I'll stay?" he asked softly.

Erin smiled, kneeling down to his level. "Yes, Tommy. This is your home now. You can stay here as long as you need."

Jay placed a reassuring hand on Tommy's shoulder. "We've got everything you need, buddy. And if there's anything else you want, just let us know."

Tommy nodded, a small smile forming on his face. "Thank you."

Erin showed Tommy to his room, where he immediately gravitated towards the toys. "You can play with anything you like," she said, watching as he picked up a stuffed animal.

Jay leaned against the doorframe, his expression softening as he watched Tommy. "We'll make sure you're comfortable here, Tommy. You're part of our family now."

As the evening went on, Erin and Jay made dinner, and they all sat together at the table. Tommy was still a bit quiet, but he seemed more relaxed in the warm, welcoming environment.

After dinner, Erin helped Tommy get ready for bed. She tucked him in, making sure he had his stuffed animal close by. "Goodnight, Tommy. We'll be right here if you need anything," she said softly.

Tommy looked up at her, his eyes filled with gratitude. "Goodnight, Erin."

Jay came in to say goodnight as well, giving Tommy a reassuring smile. "Sleep tight, buddy. We'll see you in the morning."

As they left Tommy's room, Erin and Jay exchanged a look of relief and determination. They knew the road ahead would be challenging, but they were ready to face it together.

In the living room, Erin sat down on the couch, feeling the weight of the day finally catching up to her. Jay joined her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.

"We did a good thing today," Jay said quietly.

Erin nodded, leaning into him. "Yeah, we did. Tommy's safe now, and that's what matters."

Jay kissed the top of her head. "We'll get through this together, Erin. One step at a time."

With Tommy safely asleep in the next room, Erin and Jay felt a sense of hope and determination. They were ready to face whatever challenges came their way, knowing they had each other and a new member of their family to protect and care for.

Later that night, Erin finally managed to get some rest. She had been exhausted from the day's events and fell asleep on the couch. Jay, however, couldn't sleep. He sat at the kitchen table, his laptop open in front of him, the glow of the screen illuminating his determined expression.

As he typed, he navigated through various websites and forms, researching the process of formally adopting Tommy. He knew it was a big step, but he felt a deep sense of responsibility and care for the boy.

A soft rustling sound came from the living room. Erin stirred, slowly waking up. She rubbed her eyes and noticed the light coming from the kitchen. Curious, she got up and walked over to find Jay engrossed in his work.

"Jay, what are you doing?" she asked, her voice still groggy from sleep.

Jay looked up, surprised to see her awake. "Hey, I didn't mean to wake you. I was just… looking into something."

Erin moved closer, peering at the screen. "Are you… are you looking into adopting Tommy?"

Jay nodded, his expression serious. "Yeah. I know it's a big step, but I can't stop thinking about him. He needs us, Erin. He needs a stable home, and I think we can give that to him."

Erin's heart swelled with emotion. She placed a hand on Jay's shoulder, her voice soft. "I think you're right. Tommy deserves a loving home, and we can be that for him."

Jay smiled, feeling a sense of relief and determination. "I want to make sure we do everything right. There's a lot of paperwork and steps involved, but I'm willing to do whatever it takes."

Erin nodded, her eyes filled with resolve. "We'll do it together. Tommy is part of our family now, and we'll make sure he knows he's loved and safe."

Jay reached out and took Erin's hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "Thank you, Erin. I couldn't do this without you."

Erin smiled, leaning in to kiss Jay softly. "We're in this together, Jay. For Tommy."

With renewed determination, they sat down together, going through the adoption process step by step. They knew it wouldn't be easy, but they were committed to giving Tommy the loving home he deserved.
