Chapter 2. Downtime.

The capital city of the Empire's Arwintar was a sight to behold in terms of human ingenuity of its time, streets well paved and lit, patrols of air and grounds. Of course, there lurks dark corners but when compared to its unfortunate neighbour, the difference couldn't be more apparent.

Morning will soon come, as the last rounds of street torches were lit, the sole gate sentry yawned.

To call him the sole sentry wouldn't be accurate as there were many stationed atop the walls and behind them, still, his relaxed attitude could be understandable, his shift was about to end after all.

Then, he noticed figures approaching, the alert above wasn't sound so they couldn't have been monsters. Still, there were cases of humanoid monsters that could get close in recorded history.

He readied to draw his blade, looking at his back, two more knights joined him.

"Let's get closer." he cautiously said.

As the figure approached in clear view, they would notice a foreign woman in strange attire, holding another that looked to be a citizen of the Empire. A cursory glance suggests that the carried girl has wounds that have been tended to.

Common sense would be rushing to help, however they know the risks of such action.

"Hm..? That girl…" one of the guards recognised Arche, he had advised her to group up, fearing she would get herself hurt seriously or worse.

With an unchanged expression, he asked. "Per His Majesty's emergency decree, entry at this hour requires signed permission by city officials, please present if you have one, otherwise you will need to wait until sunrise. We can take care of the injured in your place"

The woman nodded wordlessly, gently placing Arche on the ground, her features suggested she was not from around the Empire, the guard thought her to be from the south, but something told him that might not quite be the case.

Before he realised it, there were already papers in his hand… No, a small plaque, his eyes widened not only at the speed of the manoeuvre but also at the object. It's an entry permit, one that can only be granted by one person in the whole Empire. This was the second time he had ever seen it, the first being in textbooks.

He glanced at his companions, confirming their mutual feelings, he thought there was no room for error. "My deepest apologies for stalling the person of your standing."

The three sentries bowed deeply, by the time they raised their heads, both the women and the girl were gone.

"taht lliw eb etiuq" (That will be quite difficult…)

"Aegnrra ti Esseldragr. Egnihtyrve si rof reh Elairpmi Issenhgh…" (Arrange it regardless. Everything is for her imperial highness…)

.

.

.

"Whose voice are those… where am I?"

Arche's consciousness asked, she wanted to open her eyes, to see if the soft texture behind her back truly was a bed and not some eldritch abomination. To rise up and be reunited with her sisters… Yet, she felt an immeasurably sense of dread, one that paralysed her.

Footsteps approached and stopped. "You are awake! No need to be tense and afraid…"

"Lainie?" Arche asked, sure enough, it was Lainie, though now dressed fitting of Empire residence, if one were to describe it, she fit herself with an outfit commonly seen in shopkeepers, but instead of a long skirt, she fitted herself with pants.

Arche's eyes darted across the room, it seemed to be one of the low-end inns of the Empire, though the motion made her realise that her wound was still there, albeit neatly patched up, someone changed her into more suitable robes.

"I disinfected it and other basic stuff~" Lainie said, getting a little bit closer as if asking for something. "Someone will come and cast 'healing magic' on you, pretty convenient isn't it~"

Healing magic is a cornerstone for every civilisation, with the world full of monsters of various kinds, diseases and poison plaguing the land, how could humanity train its best if they fell to low-level monsters before their potential? But the price of healing isn't free, just like any other transaction, miracles come after coins.

"-Wait… How can I understand you?!"

"Pft, only notice that now?" Arche had been patted several times following this sentence, she didn't resist. "Some dubious old man cast a certain spell on me… Even he wasn't sure how long it would last but let's talk as much as possible while we still can?".

"Dubious old man..?"

"Mhm, dubious old man. But let's not get derailed, friend, ask me all you like." Lainie sat in one of the chairs in the room, there were two of them and at a small table.

"Okay…" Arche breathed in. "WHO ARE YOU HOW DID YOU FELL FROM THE SKY AND IS ALL FINE DID YOU CAST MIND CONTROL SPELL ON ME? WHAT'S YOUR AFFILIATIONS AND IS LAINIE REALLY YOUR NAME? HOW DID I NOT DIE?"

Lainie pouted, "Easy now you might bite your tongue… Time for Lainie special exposition for her best friend Arche!" She said, pulling out what seems to be a small blackboard scratching childish illustrations as she spoke, Arche was familiar with the object, commonly sold on magic academy's grounds.

"Firstly, Lainie is part of my name, I can't lie about that. Secondly, mind control is not something we can do, sure we figured out how to brainwash people but that will take time. The reason you feel inclined to not run away from me is…. due to my natural cuteness!... Hey now, don't look at me like that. Are you not convinced? Mm… I can understand that, anyway! I snuck behind and stabbed mister goblin right in the back, was quite smug about it too, but you fell asleep so I just pat myself on the back and carried you to safety."

Lainie gave Arche a small strange salute and smiled brightly.

"Lainie is from Arcadia! You may have never heard of it since it's beyond Re-Estize oceans! Specifically, Arcadia is a continent but our Imperial Regent Emperor-Consort unified every inch of the land, so we dub ourselves the Final Imperium.. hehe sounds cool and juvenile isn't!. But don't tell anyone for now or there will be some serious consequences..."

The last sentence does sound like a threat on the surface, but Lainie had an extremely sombre expression almost as if she wanted to cry.

A bag of coins was placed next to Arche's side,

"Sorry for getting you hurt, adventurer's guild have subjugation reward for night goblin, I'm obviously not a member but with a little bit of creative manoeuvring… Here's your share"

Arche checked the contents, it wasn't much but wasn't little either an appropriate, undeducted sum. "Thank you Lainie…" she said, attempting to bow whilst in bed.

"No no, don't lower your head, I'm the one that should be thanking you… If someone fell from the sky, I would certainly hesitate to approach and help them… Oh right! I have another gift for you too!" Lainie reached deep into her side pocket before she got it-

A knock, followed by a masculine "Excuse me" came from the other side of the door.

"Time's up~ I'll stand beside the door and open it, wanna bet if your healer would notice me?"

With no reply from the girl, Lainie skipped to open the door, on the other side was a priestly-looking man, he wore armour and seemed particularly well built, fitting of clerics. He looked at Arche in recognition but didn't say anything.

The girl was new to the scene, because of her young appearance, there were rumours about her, none interesting enough to be of note however.

Arche recognised the man as Roberdyck Goltron member of Foresight, a worker group of some renown, they have a fighter, a ranger and a cleric, Arche thought of approaching should she need to continue as a worker.

"Excuse my abrupt entry, I am here on behalf of Imperial patrols to take a look at your wounds" After receiving an affirmative nod, he moved in closer and began his general observation.

"This is extremely well patched up… whoever did this must be an expert physician, even a spell on the lower end can heal the rest completely." he remarked before casting

"[Light Cure Wounds]"

Greenish light enveloped Arche, fixing her wounds, she tore off strange-looking rags and sure enough, her wounds were cured entirely. Lainie looked particularly impressed by the display but said nothing.

"Thank you." Arche said producing a coin pouch, then asked, "How much was that?"

Normally, one would agree on the price before services, there's a standard minimum for healing magic sanctioned by the churches but many people can not recall it off the top of their heads, especially adventurers that have a healer inside their party, being exempted from forced donation.

.

.

.

Transaction concluded, Roberdyck took a minimum amount of coins before excusing himself, in the end, Arche didn't ask to join his party, firstly because he wasn't the leader and secondly, the timing was not appropriate.

She put the remaining coins together with her stash and carefully checked that no coins were lost.

Lainie was gloating about how Roberdyck didn't notice her. Then proceeded to ramble on about how cute she thought sheep were (It's her first time seeing one) then asked Arche if she would help with touring later. The meeting point was agreed and the two went on their way.

"He should be around here…"

Her family took loans from various sources, so she would meet many of the sort, still, she steeled herself in one alley, the time was around noon, so there were many passersby just a few steps beyond the alley.

"Miss Furt is it? Let's be quick, time is of the essence."

She looked at the debt collector, this one, in particular, seemed extremely well dressed, he constantly glanced at his handheld timepiece as he got closer and closer.

.

.

.

"120 gold coins. Your debt with us is clear, but I'm afraid the collateral is already sold, the sum covers the interests and some bonus for us."

The collateral in this exchange was an artefact of some value from Arche's great-grandparents, her father would not be happy about this but what's the worst he could do?

"That piece of junk has no value anyway" she thought to herself. "Have I seen this man before…? Isn't he employed by a noble…?"

He started to walk off, and the girl did the same in the opposite direction, she couldn't help but smile, the debt was cleared, and now she could work on securing a future for her sisters.

There was still time until the meeting, Lainie was probably finding sheep to adore, thus Arche opted to head to her family estate, perhaps some time of respite will calm her down.

.

.

.

.

—-

Arche opened the front gate of Furt Manor, and her eyes instantly widened.

"Are you okay? Where have you been…?" Arche's mother came for an embrace while uncertain whether the father had the same longing sentiment, he was semi-distracted by an object before him.

"H….How" Arche let those words out, the master of the house was looking at the very object used as collateral for their previous debt.

"Count Femel lent me some money, 200 gold is nothing when compared to getting our legacy back! Wash up, when are you going to stop your rebellious phase and go back to the academy?"

Arche wanted to respond,

To shout some sort of retort,

But she couldn't.

Her family had been taking care of her after all, perhaps one day a boiling point would reach, but that day wouldn't be today, perhaps if she kept her diligence up, her parents would follow the good example.

Optimistically thinking so,

she walked past them both to her room.

Peeking at her three-year-old sisters, they were unfortunately napping, so Arche with little time she has to clean herself up. Some downtime with Lainie before going back to work should be fine…? Certainly, Arche didn't think that but the weight of leaving her hanging was also heavy.

Expeditionary's notes, 3rd report board cast:

-Attached A-

"The so-called 'Talents' of the new worlders appear to be special abilities few were born with. Requesting imperial decree to lift the ban on breeding experiments on sentient beings of this continent. Goal: To test whether it is genetic or magic in nature. Assumption: Magic. Basis: Integrating 'Talented' humans into chimaera war form yields no additional traits.

-Attached B-

Languages automatic translation of our continent works one way to the New Worlders, Assumption: Similar World Items have been used here, albeit inferior to ours. We have yet to make contact with a local linguist or any sentient which requires intervention.

-Attached C-

No sighting of mutual species.

No sighting of dragon lords nor radio signals.

No sighting of any sufficiently advanced civilisation.

Should the imperial regent command land called Re-Estize can be put down by our expeditionary forces alone in combat, but in governance, we would be incapable.

Should the imperial regent wish to establish friendly relations, we require more time to survey.

-Attached D-

The nature of this new world is to be protected at all costs, requesting the total ban of chemical warfare and restriction on S11-037 warheads from our ships. Until more possible threats are known, I implore strict continuation of non-hostile policy.

-Attached E-

Everything is for Her Highness's ascension.

Your blessed servants,

3rd Imperial Expeditionaries.

….

Lainie waited at a small park, clicking her time away with a small switch. Passers-by looked at her, some interested for a bit at what she was doing, but none actually approached and quickly lost interest.

The park wasn't one of the main ones, so there weren't many people that actually saw her.

Suddenly a deep pain in her chest, slightly above where her heart should be. Lainie didn't show it to the outside, but internally, she struggled to maintain her posture.

"The air here… The animals…. The plants… Are so much better than at home, so why even now… is there truly no escape?"

She gulped down something, and as the pain went away, she wiped off sweat drops that began to form on her neck, it appeared that no bystander recognised her struggle.

"Arche is late…Did she get into trouble? Did I mark the place wrong…? How do people tell time in this continent anyways…"

The agreed time was 2 hours when they both went on their ways, Lainie, possessing a vintage-looking timepiece of which she wore as a neckless turned up sharp on time.

She approached the nearest person she could find, coincidentally, she already knew the person. "Oh hello mister adventurer, we meet again, thank you for earlier."

Lainie learnt that by cutting the monster part, she could claim rewards, though because she wasn't an adventurer she was unsure whether she could claim it or not, so via crediting someone else she got the coins whilst he got the clout. Despite fraudish behaviour, the man assured her the guild would never find out.

"Hello miss," he greeted her with a welcoming smile. His name was Lockmeier, but Lainie didn't catch it properly. He was apparently retiring.

"Hello~" Lainie returned the expression "Can I confirm if this place is Arlis Park?"

"It is indeed miss, are you waiting for someone?"

"Mhm… She's supposed to be here half an hour ago… by the way, are you going somewhere far mister? Did the guild find out after all?"

The man laughed and waggled his fingers in negative. "As I have said when we met, I'm retiring, no matter how hard I try I'll never reach the peak anyways, so I'll settle with serving certain nobles next door over in Re-Estize"

"Ehh~ I suppose you will make a good butler.." Whilst sounding like a playful response, Lainie truly thought that to be the case.

"Oh no, he's recruiting retired adventurers. Good pay, safe job, I couldn't ask for a better retirement home, still are you sure you don't want to join the guild miss?"

"Mm… Maybe later, I bid you a hopeful future… Here, take one." From her pocket, Lainie produced a pinkish crystal the size of a peanut, it didn't produce any glow or seem to have special effects, yet the unnatural colour seemed a bit… off, artificial even.

"What's this…? Never seen anything like it before." The retiring adventure reluctantly accepted it, and inspected it for a while before covering it with cloth and putting it in one of his pockets.

"Mm…. It's something like a good luck charm, there's no special effects or anything like that if you're wondering…" Lainie's speech became irregular but she persisted. "Please…Take it… And good luck with your journey..~"

—-

Arche is now dressed in her casual clothes, though it allows room for a hidden knife, she wasn't particularly good at utilising edged weapons but it's more of a safety measure at this point.

"Sorry for being late… Where should we head to?" Arche said, perhaps she wished to say something else but Lainie's expression stopped her.

"You meanie…"

"Sorry… I ran into a few issues along the way."

On her way here, her little sisters woke up, so she played with them for a while, and then she headed to discuss debt with the new lender's representatives.

"You seem troubled… Is it about money? Lainie will help!"

"How did she know…? Could it be my expressions when I woke up earlier?"

"Yes…" she dejectedly said, lying here would not do her any favour in the future, so giving minimal fragments of the whole story would be the best means to conceal her situation and identity.

"Hm…" Lainie muttered to herself, closing the distance. "Don't flinch and trust me" she said, placing her finger on Arche's neck, making her way up to her cheeks and retracting. "I see, I see…"

"What was that?! Wait… somehow I feel better like all of my stress is gone for a few seconds it didn't feel like magic…"

"You're still showing me around right? I'll make it brief, I have been to the adventurers' guild but I can't find where workers are gathered…"

"You might have misunderstood something so let me make it clear first, workers are not organised like adventurers, so when customers wish for a request, they need to seek out appropriately strong workers themselves or use an information broker." Arche started walking, "But there's a place you can find many of them easily."

"Singing Apple Pavilion right…? The dubious old man told me one of his former star students has been lurking around there."

Arche maintained an indifference expression and asked. "Did he… ask you to do something?"

"Hm? Not really, I don't know the whole situation myself so I did not comment!"

"If it's master then he should be able to see her true nature… But have concealed her mana somehow. Would he be able to see through it?"

"Oh right! You are… a magic caster? magic user…? magiteer? Well doesn't matter, you seem pretty smart. Why don't you meet this old man? Maybe you'll learn supa cool magic like, pew pew boom boom! He seems busy but I'm sure I can pester him enough to teach you a spell or two!"

Arche smiled bitterly, "It will be best not to."

.

.

"This is the place, while it may look old on the outside, going in can change your mind quickly."

"Hm..? I actually like this sort of old architecture, back in our homeland we use boring concrete instead of stone bricks like these, do you know when it was built?"

"I'm not sure, but I believe the proprietor can give you an answer."

Lainie stopped her steps, prompting Arche to do the same, she wondered if something she said was displeasing, however, Lainie didn't seem to have any anger.

"There is no reason to go in, I will check it out later" Lainie got closer and whispered, sending shivers down Arche's spine. "Answer me this and be honest, how many coins do you need."

"...200 gold coins."

"...Hm." Lainie paced back, "I believe I can help you, but you'll need to help me too." She produced a small pink crystal as before and handed it to Arche. "Hold on to this, and listen closely, I don't know about your situation fully and I won't pry. What's your current plan?"

Arche thought for a bit, revealing it might be problematic, no worker party no matter what kind would accept those in debt without reservation. Due to being independent of any insurance system, members of a worker group would have to trust one another, suppose one is deeply in debt, they might take all the reward and run away with it, one with too much sentiment can ruin their grey-to-black missions. She could join novices that these practices are unknown, but if she has to babysit them, that would ruin the entire point of taking more difficult quests in a group.

Still, she felt she could trust Lainie at least on that end. Silent detection magic on the pink crystal revealed nothing, but there's life from it albeit a tiny, one-hit point in terms of Yggdrasil.

"I have one group in mind that I'd like to join. Would you like to join me?"

Lainie shook her head, "You haven't even seen my combat capabilities yet, anyone can stab mister goblin in the back.".

"But not everyone can vanish into thin air like that…"

"Hm… It's not invisibility but, oh never mind. Sorry friend, there really are somethings I need to take care of but I promise to help you, once you finish your first quest, come to the park we meet again no matter the hour, I'll be there."

"Is this pink crystal a tracker…"

"No it's not, come with me! It's time for dinner and my treat. Besides, I'll need to know you more."

.

.

.

The two made way, no, one was practically dragged to high end districts, ignoring the eyes along the way, Lainie made a stop at one of the finest establishments of the capital.

"Private dining please~" she asked the waiter in front of the restaurant, he looked at her politely but the contempt couldn't be more clear.

"Lainie if you dress like that and come here…."

"I'm sorry dear customer but…"

Just then, the door of the restaurant opened, figure exiting is towering, with skin colour similar to Lainie, short grey hair and brown eyes.

He looked at Lainie, the two mutually bowed.

"Sir Enec, I was not aware you frequent places like these."

"Eh…?"

"Greeting miss, I merely visit to ensure the Emperor visit tomorrow goes smoothly." He looked at Arche and made a kind face, "I wish you an excellent evening with your companion."

"Thank you for your kind words sir." the two exchanged few more pleasantries before Nazami Enec, one of the Empire's four knights departed.

Lainie turned back to address the waiter. "I trust I'm on the list already, show us our seats."

"Without hesitation miss!"

—-.

The two were put in a small private cubicle there's some fine decor and a window to look down on the people below, a perfect interior design. Menu comes in courses so now to do is wait.

"Were you really on the list…?" Arche asked, whilst getting seated, the seats could not be moved but there were more than enough leg rooms, a person could fit there easily, she thought it was quite strange but thought nothing more of it.

"Hm…? Of course? Do you think I have enough intimidation aura to impose my will on rich people?" the answer sounded genuine to any listener, but a bit difficult to swallow.

"Um…"

"Anyways!" Lainie quiets her voice, "You can show me your real self now!"

"Real self…?"

"Real self! Do you seriously expect me to believe a seven-year-old is capable of using scary magic? You must be at least 200 years old, living in solitary until I come crashing down!"

"That's… not it…"

"Eh it isn't…?"

"No."

..

Appetisers slid across hidden rails before resting near the table, like one you can see in sushi bar.

"I'm sorry, I thought that would be funny…"

Lainie grabbed a starter of dehydrated water, air-infused bubbles, clear mineral soup and needle-thin dried salad.

"Please don't worry… I'm just slightly confused."

Though she seemed confused about how to eat them, following Arche's example, she managed.

"For your information, I'm fourteen this year…"

"...I see." the visitor nodded to herself. "Well… young mistress is there anything you want to ask…"

"Please don't call me that, but I'm curious how old you are… If you don't mind me asking."

"Hm… I'm 34, but Arcadian are different from humans, you see, we consider 18 as like, the end of childhood into the teenage years, the change isn't linear and I haven't talked to enough people to give you an exact figure."

Arche looked slightly displeased, perhaps she had thought they were around the same age? Lainie couldn't tell.

"Can you tell me more about your homeland…?"

"About that…. Oh well, screw protocols just don't tell anyone no matter what!

Our continent, Arcadia, is full of various nations, however, we did not manage to grasp domestication, mostly because our animals are… Let's say it is difficult to deal with, when our ancestors realised we could perhaps selectively breed them to be weaker and yield more meat, we already hunted the candidates to extinction, this goes for all nations unfortunately.

At first, we tried agriculture, but that alone wouldn't satisfy us as we need meat in our diet, there was no such thing as [Magic] or [Talent], though we have [Skill].

After generations of starvation, the new plan was to cannibalise ourselves, to pick the weak and the plump and their offspring to satisfy the thirst for the flesh of the masses..

To this day, we still pump our kin full of chemicals, accelerating growth, lessening their perception, to be born and die as nothing but non-sentient meatballs like plants…

"

"T-That's…" thankfully the appetisers had all been eaten and would not come out where they came from, mostly due to their non-existent nature.

"That's just a myth! Hehe~" Lainie giggled irrationally, almost seeming forced even. "It's just some conspiracies, but makes for a spoopy scarie story, if one were to seriously believe it they have to be sent to the happy house branch to be happily reeducated~

ANYWAYS!

You know the rest of the story, nations come and go, but ours conquered everything!"

"I.. think I understand." she muttered those words out, somehow she wished she never asked that question.

"Eh understand what? I haven't even begun. Our government system is not too dissimilar to your country, there is one head of state, Emperor/Empress, however the late Empress passing away, the next in line is unfortunately too young to take the throne, she's actually around your age actually… So for now the Emperor-Consort assumed regency."

"I see… Is the succession law… matriarchal?"

"On the contrary, it is patriarchal… As to how the late Empress took the throne, I'll tell you later because it's extremely complicated, but her imperial highness, Imperial Princess Melone De Lamentia is 37th in line to the throne, the last of her dynasty, she barely has the 2nd previous Emperor's blood in her veins, extremely low legitimacy but she's cute so we shall await her ascension."

Arche recalled a story about the blood emperor, if this Melone cleaved her way through 36 others of her own dynasty, they might as well be best friends when they meet.

"I heard you mention [Cute] several times… is it a keyword like, [Talent] or [Martial Arts]…?"

Lainie stared blankly at her food, not acknowledging the question.

"Hm… Right, I'm here because the precursor of your nation actually made contact with our precursor nation. Because we are extremely strict about following through with ancient laws, I'm now here as a military attaché. Your emperor acknowledged me but doesn't seem interested in letting me see things nor give me anything to do… Ah, I know that expression! Call me Lainie as always, don't add any prefixes, titles or suffixes!"

A long time ago when Re-Estize and Baharuth Empire were one nation, a massive fleet of ships was sent across the sea to seek… something lost to history, whilst their existence was forgotten by their own people, Arcadian remembered a singular tattered ship, filled with strange Arcadian-like entities landing.

"That's pretty amazing of you… Are military rankings over there similar to here?"

"Ours are more sophisticated… My rank is Lieutenant General, but that's meaningless now that the war is over and I'm here..." Lainie turned to the new dishes being sent, stone-aged steak, fresh pasta (literally) and sea-salted pan-seared ice cubes.

"I'm aware that you people have faith in four… gods? Are you particularly religious?"

Arche paused momentarily, why she certainly is not a devout follower of any of those, if let's say a hypothetical vampiric beast pushed her to limits, she would not hesitate to attempt to seek divine intervention.

"I'm not devout enough, but the doctrine of the god of earth is worth taking to heart.. What about Lainie…?"

She wanted to originally ask 'What kind of religion Arcadia have?' but opted not to.

"That is a conundrum… Let's start with a social lesson, I have heard that a priest person seeing you said 'god be with you', in our case, that would be an insult as our 'Gods' only look at those they intend to punish, the only prayer their follower would wish is disasters upon their enemy… But most importantly, while our gods are no more, ours still roam the lands."

"Eh?! Truly?!"

"Yes, for realsies… In fact, you are feasting your eyes at one! Behold! Moi Leanie, Arc Angel of Abstinence and Happiness~"

Arche gave Leanie a blank stare, and the latter reached to pet the former.

"That reminds me, you haven't answered, how did you fall out of the sky..?"

Lainie paused, she had been trying to slice a steak for the last minute but the cutlery didn't seem to be sharp enough. "Um… Let's say I got blown up from somewhere in Re-Estize, since I'm immune to explosion and fall damage, I just flew and landed near you. Will you believe that explanation?"

A/N

Look, a completely sane POV character for once… Well, enjoy her while you can, this story really isn't about Lainie.

In the next chapter, we shall regale Lainie's unfortunate journey to the Empire.

I plan to sneak more dated references since it seems to be my signature writing antics… but rusty on that end too.
