Once outside, they part ways as Jonah walks down the street that takes him directly to the Guild. He enters, notices Eina at a stall, and walks up to her.

"Ah, Jonah, what can I do for you?" She smiled.

"I came here to check out the Guild Library," he answered.

"It's on the second floor." Then gestures. "The stairs are over there. Are there any books you're searching for?"

"I'm looking for books about the lore of this world."

"There is a whole row about that, but I'm sure the librarian will show you."

"Ah, thank you very much." And Jonah turns away to go to the stairwell.

He arrives at the floor with the library and enters. He keens his Insight to help him focus on what books he desires to read.

"May I help you, sir?" A woman sitting at the desk asked.

"No, that's okay," Jonah answered cordially.

His Insight shows him three such books and he walks over to the shelves where each of them are, taking them, then finding a booth to sit at. He removes his gloves, bracers, the Saw Cleaver, belt sash, and finally his coat, all of which he neatly places onto the table to help prop up the books he will be reading.

Jonah starts reading in earnest. One of the books is titled, The History of Orario and the Dungeon, the other is titled, The Familias, and the last one is titled, the Races of the World.

He reads the history one first.

The Good Hunter learns that the Dungeon seems to be as old as this world, also known as the Lower World, and had been a plague to it as monsters of all sorts would crawl up out of it to terrorize the rest of the world. There was Nhogg, the most powerful monster at that time that was defeated by a hero. Then three more overwhelmingly powerful monsters emerged from the Dungeon to challenge the safety of life. They were Leviathan, Behemoth, and the Black Dragon. Their presence created the Three Great Quests, meaning it was a quest to kill all three of those monsters. One Thousand years ago, the Black Dragon was challenged by a Level Nine adventurer named Albert who had a Spirit's blessing. Albert was unfortunately killed by it but not before putting out one of its eyes so that the Black Dragon would ever after be called, the One-Eyed Black Dragon.

Level Nine? Jonah thought. Seems like a powerful level. Then if that is the case, this Black Dragon must have been a force to reckon with if it were capable of killing such a powerful man.

It was around that time when the Tower of Babel descended from the sky and was placed over the Dungeon as a plug. Ouranos, the God of the Dungeon, descended to the Lower World and became its gatekeeper to prevent any more monsters from escaping and gave the first Falna to the first adventurers for them to head down into the Dungeon. The other gods and goddesses wanted to be a part of the Lower World so they descended from Heaven. But they had to live like mortals and that meant living in the same manner as they did, though they were still allowed to keep a few privileges such as detecting lies and granting Falnas. If they decided to or if their bodies should ever be too injured, they went back to Heaven as a pillar of light, never to return to the Lower World for so long as the Lower World existed.

So they actually choose to be helpless! Jonah thought amusingly. Definitely nothing like the Great Ones who wanted to impose themselves on us.

The Moon-scented Hunter continues reading. When he gets to the mentioning of the Familias, he reads the other book about them, since it will contain more details. He reads about the Zeus and Hera Familias, about how they were both the most powerful Familias in the world at that time. Out of all of the Familias, they were the most thorough in their exploration of the Dungeon. That which the Guild knows about the Dungeon is all thanks to the Zeus and Hera Familias. Together, they completed two of the Three Great Quests by killing Behemoth and Leviathan in recent history.

These two familias were not only immensely powerful but they were also a generous lot as well. Jonah noted. Instead of hoarding their knowledge, they shared it freely with the Guild. They also got along instead of rivalling each other for more power and prestige. A rarity indeed. Not even the Great Ones got along like that. Now that I'm thinking about it, Behemoth and Leviathan must have been immortal if they were killed only that recently. Were they on par with the Great Ones?

Jonah learns about how the One-Eyed Black Dragon made its return afterwards.

Definitely immortal. Jonah thought.

And just like they did with Behemoth and Leviathan, the Zeus and Hera Familias confronted it. But instead of defeating it, they only managed to drive it away and not without great cost in that only two of their adventurers survived its onslaught. Zald, a Level Seven of the Zeus Familia, and Alfia, a Level Seven of the Hera Familia.

Even with their combined might, they were still no match for that monster, and it's still out there. Jonah thought with unease. Wait? Zald? Alfia? Willy did mention them and expressed his contempt about them.

He learns of Loki and Freya forming an alliance to overthrow Zeus and Hera and drove them out of Orario.

Of course. Jonah thought cynically. It would only be natural that they had envious rivals. I wonder where Zeus and Hera went? Were they driven back to Heaven?

Jonah reads about the Dark Age that followed. It was caused by Evilus, an organization whose goal was to spread death and destruction. It was a time when the people of Orario were murdered on a weekly basis, if not on a daily one. Zald and Alfia became a part of Evilus as its strongest members.

So that's why Willy was glad about their mutual demise. Jonah thought. Come to think of it, that man back in that bath house also mentioned this Evilus and the trouble they caused. If such powerful people as Zald and Alfia were seduced by this group, then they truly must have been suffering from the loss of their familias.

Jonah reads on about how the other Familias, especially those of Freya, Ganesha, and Loki, finally rallied by pooling their members and resources in a mutual pledge to hunt and kill the members of Evilus wherever found. This triggered the Great Feud, also known as the Seven Deadly Days. The fighting was so fierce that monsters ran amok within Orario with buildings burning and blood running in the streets like rainwater.

Sounds like what Yharnam has become. He thought grimly.

The demise of Zald at the hands of Ottar, Captain of the Freya Familia, and Alfia at the hands of the Astrea Familia dealt a crippling blow to Evilus. Afterwards, the surviving Familias consolidated their power.

Freya, Loki, Ganesha, Hephaestus, Demeter, Apollo, Ishtar, and Hermes are now the most powerful familias in Orario. Jonah thought. Hestia is not mentioned here. Since there is only her and Bell, it can only mean that she had nothing to do with that Great Feud.

He next reads the book about the races of this world. He reads about there not only being Humans but also Elves, Dwarves, Pallum, Beastfolk, Amazons, Spirits, and Gods.

Quite a diverse lot of sapient beings inhabit this world and we humans are the most dominant amongst them. Jonah thought. Definitely, the gods of this world are nothing like the Great Ones.

"The library will be closing in ten minutes!" The librarian announced, startling Jonah from his studying.

Has it gotten this late already? He thought.

With a sigh of disappointment, he closes the books and sets them aside. He puts on his coat then his belt sash, bracers, gloves, and Saw Cleaver. He is soon out of the Guild, giving a start as to how late in the day it has become. Such was his engrossment in reading those books.

It seems the people of this world got a better handle on their problems than my world. Jonah thought. I wonder if my world can ever recover from the atrocity of the Great Ones?

Jonah arrives at the church and enters the room, going downstairs.

"Hestia, Bell, I'm back!" He called while descending the stairs.

"Oh hey, Jonah!"

Upon reaching the bottom, there is only Bell to be home.

"Did you happen to run into Goddess on your way back here?" Bell asked.

"No I didn't, why do you ask?" Jonah asked.

"Because of this." As Bell hands him a black covered book.

"A book?" As Jonah takes it and looks through it. "But it has blank pages."

"That is a grimoire," Bell explained. "It is a book that will imbue magic into the first person who reads it but it will lose its power to that first person. It had words in it until I read it."

"So you can use magic now?"

"Yes, I can cast Firebolt."

"Okay, so what's the problem?"

"The problem," as Bell's voice faulters and his look is of unease, "is that a grimoire is outrageously expensive."

"Then where did you get it and why did you read it?" Jonah sneered as he holds it out to Bell who takes it.

"I . . . I didn't know it was a grimoire! Honestly, I didn't! It was given to me by a girl I ran into earlier today and helped her out. She was carrying that book and told me that someone had left it behind at where she works, a tavern called the Hostess of Fertility, and gave it to me in gratitude."

"Then she must've been ignorant of the nature of that book or else she wouldn't have given it to you. I guess Hestia must've ran off in an attempt to make restitution."

"She was going to take the book with her but I stopped her."

"Bell, if anyone is to blame here, it's whoever owned that book to begin with. Really, how foolish must they be to leave something like this lying around like some scrap of paper?"

Bell sighs. "Yeah, you got a point there, Jonah."

"I'm glad you understand."

"I'm going out to eat," Bell said as he puts the used grimoire down. "Care to join me?"

"Yes, I think I will. So where are we going?"

"To the Hostess of Fertility."

"Is that so. I stopped by that place twice. Once yesterday and again today. If you are ready, let's go."

The two leave.

"So were you having a drink and a meal at that place?" Bell asked.

"No, the first time it was due to a horrible noise that made me believe that one of the monsters of Yharnam had come here. When I arrived, I heard yelling. People were actually unconscious! It turned out that one of the waitresses had been singing."

"Wow, I can only imagine. And the second time?"

"It was today when I went to find directions to any place that would sell me the proper materials to make bullets. One of them directed me to a place called, the Witch's Shop, where I got the materials to make more bullets."

They arrive at the Hostess of Fertility. There is a girl with silver hair and wearing the tavern uniform, meaning that she is a waitress, greeting them at the doors. She turns to greet Bell and Jonah as they approach.

She makes a subtle start at the sight of Jonah.

"Ah, you made it!" She quickly recovered to say to Bell. "I wasn't sure if you'd remember."

"Yeah," Bell said.

"I never introduced myself, did I?" the waitress said. "My name is Syr Flover."

"Please to meet you, Miss Flover," Bell said. "I'm Bell Cranel and this is Jonah Theron."

"Why hello there, Mister Theron," she said cheerfully. "You'll be joining Bell for dinner?"

"Ah yes, I am," Jonah answered seemingly distant.

"Is something wrong, Mister Theron," Syr asked.

"Ah, it is just that I have a lot on my mind," Jonah answered assuredly. "Wait a minute, you two exchanged introductions just then. So I take it you two only met today?"

"Why yes, Bell was being a sweetie and helped me out with stuff," Syr said.

"Very well," Jonah answered. She must have been the one who gave him that magic book. Best to keep that to myself to prevent embarrassing her over her ignorance about that book's property.

"Now if you can just show us to our table, Miss Flover," Jonah instead said.

"Okay," she said cheerfully as she turns from them and they follow her in.

Jonah stares at Syr intently. She has that same sense about her as Hestia. Is she divinity? And she also gave a subtle start at the sight of me.

The tavern is full of adventurers of different races sitting at tables or booths all enjoying their meals, drinks, and each other's company without a care in the world.

Feels so odd. Jonah thought fondly.

"Some of the tables are reserved for the Loki Familia," Syr said as she points them out. "You two are going to have to sit at the bar."

Bell and Jonah do so. Jonah shifts his coat to one side as he sits upon the stool directly alongside Bell but further in. Syr hands them both a menu then leaves to serve other patrons.

"What're you having, Jonah?" Bell asked.

"I'm not certain yet," he answered while studying the menu intently. "What about you, Bell?"

"I'm gonna have spaghetti."

That is when Mia Grande walks up.

"Ah, good to see you again there, adventurer," she said in her jovial manner. "I guess you must know the Little Rookie! So what will you two be havin'?"

"I'll have a spaghetti," Bell answered. "And some juice please."

"I'll have the same," Jonah added. "But with a beer instead."

So it would go. They would look around the tavern at the patrons whooping it up as they drink or eat with their friends. In time, their drinks are served to them along with their food.

Bell gets a plate of heaping spaghetti while Jonah gets a smaller portion.

"So," Mia said to Bell, "I hear you're one of Syr's little friends, huh? I didn't think they made adventurers as cute as you, sweetie."

"Please, don't pick on me," Bell sighed.

"Ah, sensitive too," Mia said, then looks at Jonah. "Ah, but don't you worry there, big fella. You might not be cute, but you're tall, dark, and handsome." And gives him a wink.

"Er, thank you," Jonah chuckled as he picks up his fork, then starts eating.

"Um, Jonah?" Bell asked. "Are you going to pay for your meal?"

"But of course," he answered while eating.

"This is three hundred valis," Bell muttered with raised fingers. "The drink's two hundred, and thanks to that dropped item I got forty-four hundred on me." Then sighs in frustration. "But I wanted to be able to save some for the Familia-"

Then screeches as another plate is placed alongside his right with a large fried catfish still sizzling.

"Here you go, kid," Mia said, then with a wink. "You're so skinny, you need to put some meat on them bones."

"Or fat," Jonah said offhandedly. "Exercise is what actually puts meat on one's bones."

"Yeah, yeah, but only if they have the proper nutrition for it," Mia countered. "After all, he's down in the Dungeon working up a sweat fighting off monsters, so don't worry about him."

"But I didn't order that!" Bell protested.

"You're gonna have to eat something to get all big and strong, you know," Mia countered, then walks away.

Bell sighs as he turns around to look at the wall. "How much is the special . . . ? Eight hundred valis, that's crazy!"

"That is about thirteen hundred valis," Jonah said. "Not a bad price. Here, let me have a portion of that fish, Bell."

"Er, um, sure," Bell said as he switches the plate to his left.

Jonah cuts a large piece off the fish and places it onto his own plate.

"You like it?" Syr asked as she leans toward Bell, startling him. "So are you having a good time?"

"The spaghetti is delicious," Jonah answered with a smile. Then eats a piece of the fish. "And so is this fish."

"Why thank you," Syr answered cheerfully.

"I think I'm losing my mind," Bell moaned.

I hope you don't. Jonah thought grimly while eating.

Syr giggles. "Sorry to hear that. But it looks like I'll be making some pretty good money tonight though."

"Oh, good for you," Bell said sarcastically, then eats a piece of the fish.

"Do you like working here, Miss Flover?" Jonah asked her.

"I do," Syr answered, then turns to look out over the crowd. "This is a really great place to find all sorts of different people . . . And the more people there are, the more amazing stuff there is to hear about. That's why I'm always excited to come to work. Collecting relationships is like one of my favorite things to do. It just gets my heart pounding, you know?"

"Oh yeah, that's a beautiful thing," Bell said sarcastically around a mouthful of spaghetti.

"At least she tries to find something hopeful," Jonah said.

"You get it too, don't you Mister Theron," Syr said as she turns to regard Jonah.

"Not the way you do, I'm afraid," Jonah answered while about to finish off the last of the fish.

"Meow!" Anya called. "The big party with the reservation just arrived, meow!"
