The next day was a busy one for the O'Tooles. Shane knew Oliver had an early morning department meeting so she got out of bed early in order to make him his favorite breakfast. She even had the kitchen back in order by the time he had showered and dressed for the day. He was pleasantly surprised when he came down to find her sitting at the table waiting for him, a delicious looking spread of toast and orange slices next to his favorite ham and cheese omelets.
"Shane this looks amazing," he marveled as he came around to kiss her good morning.
"I'm not sure I deserve such royal treatment," he said as he sat down next to her. He didn't want to rehash the events of the night before, but he was still feeling a bit guilty for his anger.
"Well I need to re-earn my good wife status," Shane replied flippantly.
"Shane!" Oliver took her hand looking at her seriously.
"I know, I know," Shane countered, "you already think I'm great," he knew she was placating him, but he let her continue. "But I wanted to make you breakfast today since we won't see each other at work."
Shane was heading to the Aurora branch to help update the software on their security system. It would take the whole day, and she wouldn't be home till late so she wouldn't even be making an appearance at the DLO.
"Our team will most definitely suffer in your absence," Oliver said sincerely.
Shane smiled at the look he gave her. Oliver blessed the food and they enjoyed the meal together.
When they were finished Oliver helped her to clean up the dishes before saying, "Well I really need to run my love, I will see you tonight."
"Goodbye Oliver, I love you," Shane said as she walked him to the door and gave him a hug and a kiss goodbye.
Now it was time for her to get ready for work. Her knee was sore and stiff this morning. The gash looked mostly the same, but there was a menacing purple bruise surrounding the area now. A few minutes in the steamy shower took a lot of the edge off, and she placed new bandages over the wound, then hid it under some black slacks. Once she had put the finishing touches on her hair and makeup she headed out for the Aurora branch.
Work at the DLO was slow that day. Oliver was busy catching up on administrative paperwork, but he found himself frustrated whenever he looked up to scan the room and his eyes didn't land on his beautiful wife. He loved that Shane was so talented at working with computers, in fact she was invaluable to their team, but he was realizing that he didn't really like sharing her with other departments or branches. He got up to stretch his legs and headed to the fridge for a Yoo Hoo, his second one in less than 2 hours. Just then Rita burst through the squeaky main doors. Since things were slow today she had been helping with sorting all morning.
"Oh Oliver I'm so glad I caught you, I've been meaning to ask you how Shane is?"
"Shane is fine," Rita, thank you for your concern." Oliver replied.
"Oh good! And are the two of you fine?" she asked hesitantly and Oliver could tell she was fishing.
"Yes Shane and I are fine," he answered reassuringly.
"Oh good," Rita said in relief, her voice changing back to its chipper happy nature. "Shane was so worried that you would think she betrayed your trust, but Mr. Perez, he ran at her and he didn't even give her a choice in talking to him... Well he wasn't really talking, mostly yelling... Oh and I hope her knee is okay. She wouldn't let me take her to urgent care to get it looked at. She assured me that she was fine but I've been worried about it..."
"Rita," Oliver interrupted her chatter, "what about Shane's knee?" Rita froze!
"Oh no..." The color drained from her face as she realized her mistake, "Shane didn't tell you?" she asked slowly.
"No she did not." Oliver stated as he crossed his arms in front of his chest.
Rita gave a nervous chuckle. Her eyes darted to either side as she looked for a way out, but Oliver stood his ground. Rita sighed, she knew she wasn't getting away without telling him everything.
