Hey, I know I said it's not strictly necessary to have read 'Salvation' before this and it still isn't (unless you want to know how Alec and Jenna met. It's really sweet, I promise!), but I've forgotten that I mentioned in the original story that I imagine Georgia Tennant as Jenna. Just in case you were wondering. :)

Also, the original story is more case-oriented whereas here I focus more on Jenna and her healing process. So if you're looking for police procedures there's another reason for you to read 'Salvation' first, haha.

Chapter 3:

Jenna eyed the dark-skinned lady suspiciously as she came in. She was one of those who gave her pills in the past that made her lethargic and numb inside. Jenna could unfortunately remember her past, but wasn't really sure what had triggered her recent episode. Drugs were still clouding up her mind, she could feel it. But all had been well these past months. So what happened?

"Hello, Ms. Davison." said the doctor. "Can I call you Jenna?"

Jenna didn't bother to respond.

"As long as you don't tell me otherwise, I will, okay? I'm Elisa. Or Dr. Silva if you're more comfortable with that." She sat down next to her. "Speaking of which, you don't seem comfortable at all. I'm going to unstrap you now so you can stretch your limbs, but I would like to have a chat with you. Would that be alright?"

Jenna stared angrily at her. She didn't want to talk; she just wanted to be left alone. But even more than that she wanted out of those straps. She nodded. The doctor moved quickly to free her and Jenna tried and failed to keep breathing normally when she touched her skin. It was quickly forgotten, however, once she could cradle her arms and legs close.

Jenna scooted to the upper edge of the bed, as far away from the woman as possible. Legs pulled to her chest, arms covering her head, which she had hid between her knees, and she rocked and sobbed softly.

This felt better. Making herself as small as can be, as safe as can be, felt so much better than laying sprawled out for everyone to see. The woman, Dr. Silva, wasn't saying anything. She sat with her and let her calm down on her own terms.

Eventually, she asked, "How are you feeling now?" But Jenna refused to answer. "Now, we had a deal, didn't we, Jenna?" said Dr. Silva in what she surely believed was a playful tone.

"What are you gonna do? Tie me back up?" grumbled Jenna.

"I really wouldn't want to. It can be necessary in extreme cases of psychosis but as long as you are clear-headed and feeling fine there's no need for that, is there?"

"Right." said Jenna shortly, raising her head from her knees and looking at the doctor. "I'm fine. Can I go now?"

"First, I want to make sure that you're really okay. Mentally I mean." explained Dr. Silva. "You received treatment in the past, do you remember that?"

Jenna glared at her. "Yes." she said lowly.

"Do you know all the details? Why you were treated and for how long?" Another nod of her head, although this time the question clearly stirred up some unpleasant memories in Jenna's mind. "Can you remember why you were having a panic attack this time?" Dr. Silva questioned on.

Jenna hesitated. Her mind was blank. When she tried to remember, she only felt fear and if she dug deeper, this feeling would become stronger until she'd get to the bottom of it and then there would be another panic attack waiting for her. She was sure of it. So she shook her head no, not wanting to remember.

"That's alright. We can get to that later." She scribbled into a notebook for a while, leaving Jenna alone with her thoughts. "Is there anyone you would like to call? Someone who can be with you while you're here?"

"No." Jenna said sharply. "There's no one who cares and that's fine. I don't need anyone to hold my hand."

"Oh, maybe you wouldn't need anyone to hold your hand, but I'm sure there is someone who cares." Silva said with a smile. "I met him outside your room, seemed pretty concerned about you. Alec Hardy, the police detective?"

Jenna froze. How could she know about him? How could she know that they knew each other privately? Alec simply could've been the copper who brought her here.

"How long have you two known each other?" Silva continued to ask.

"I don't know." Jenna mumbled, not yet giving up on her suspicious demeanour but softening since Alec was the topic. "A month maybe… no, a bit longer actually. But not much."

"You seem to trust him." stated Dr. Silva.

"Why? How would you know?" Jenna shot back defensively.

"Well, he brought you in. And, apparently, you called him yourself when you realized you were getting closer to having a panic attack. You knew how vulnerable you'd be in this situation and still you trusted him enough to take care of you."

Jenna hugged her legs tighter. Something inside told her that she was in a similar position when he found her yesterday, but each further thought made her heart race, so she quickly shook those memories away. "He's the only one I know here." she answered sullenly.

"So, you're not that close then?"

Jenna was about to tell Dr. Silva that none of this was her business, but there was also a nagging urge within her to defend her and Alec's relationship. If one could even call it that yet? And if she even want it still… or rather if he still wanted it now that he's seen how crazy she can be. No one stayed after she went to the loony bin. They all seemed to be scared of her and of what she became when she wasn't herself. It made her hate herself. And it made her move away.

But Alec wanted to stay. At least that was what he'd told her before she made him leave. Did he know what he was burdening himself with? Did he truly understand how complicated she was? Would he still want to stay when he realized it?

"I trust him." Jenna suddenly said to Dr. Silva. It was a feeling within her that she couldn't explain, but she needed to say it out loud to believe it. She barely knew him, for fuck's sake. But then again, whenever they talked, she felt like they've known each other for years.

"Then why did you make him go away?" asked the doctor softly.

"Because I don't want him to see me like this. I don't want him to know this about me, but it turned out that he already does and I will lose him now anyway." Jenna's voice wavered, heartbrokenly.

"How would you know? Seemed to me that he did want to stay with you."

Jenna quickly wiped her nose. "It doesn't matter. I don't need anyone. I just want to go home."

"I don't think you're quite ready for that yet, Jenna."

Immediately, she pulled up her defences again. "Why the bloody hell not?"

The doctor nodded at her arms. "Look at yourself." Involuntarily, Jenna gazed down at her hands, one of them thickly wrapped in gauze. "You've hurt yourself pretty bad last night and you didn't even realize it. I want to make sure first that this won't happen again."

Jenna clenched her fists – which did sting badly – and looked up again. "It doesn't matter. I can deal with it."

"It does matter. Your life matters, Jenna." emphasized Silva. "I'm sure Alec feels the same way." Jenna looked stubbornly out the window again, tears pooling in her eyes. The doctor fumbled in her coat pocket; Jenna watched her from the corner of her eye. "I would like you to take these…" She put a little pill container on the bedside table. "Just one per day is enough. It'll help you sleep."

Jenna quickly turned around, arms crossed. "I don't want to take any pills! They made me sicker last time. I'm fine now, I want to go home."

"Yes, I saw which medication was prescribed to you and it's very strong indeed. But you'll see that those are different. They're just sleeping pills, nothing quite as heavy. They will help you to sleep calmly so you won't have any… nightmares, that can trigger panic attacks. I'd like to keep you here for observation, just for a few days and if nothing changes, you can go."

Jenna still looked at her stubbornly.

"This is just for your own good and safety." said Dr. Silva. "At the hospital we can react quickly if you'd have another episode. Just imagine, you'd be at home on your own and no one's there to stop you from hurting yourself. Or what if someone, your friend Alec maybe, is there and wants to calm you down, but in your panic you're hurting him instead."

Jenna's shoulders dropped, remembering the cut on Alec's face. She didn't remember being responsible for it, but after she'd seen his reaction when that doctor mentioned it earlier, there was no doubt in her mind. It was a thin, but quite long cut along his cheek. Not very deep, but it could've been.

"You don't want that to happen, do you?" Silva tried to convince. "Because I don't think that he will stay away and not try to take care of you if we'd release you. Do you?"

Jenna couldn't help but think about Alec then. About how much fun they've had when they met for lunch or dinner. How genuinely clueless he was when it came to small-talk. He was a good man; Jenna could feel that with every fibre of her being and she didn't want to hurt him. Dejectedly, she sank her head, knowing that Alec wouldn't give up so easily. "Fine." she muttered. "I'm staying. For a few days." she stressed.

"Excellent." said the doctor. "I'll be here the whole day. Just call me if you need anything at all. If you remember something or if you just want to talk for example. I will come back to you later today to try and piece together what you remember."

A cold shiver ran down Jenna's spine upon that.

"But for now, just rest some more." She gave her a pill from the container. "And if all goes well, we can release you very soon."

Alec went to work. What else was he supposed to do? He was too wound up to sleep and Daisy was at school now so he couldn't talk to her, either. The most sensible thing he could do right now was to find the bastard who had hurt Jenna. If he'd set foot into Broadchurch, he would soon regret it, because Alec was going to catch him. He would not rest until Jenna was safe.

"Oi, there you are." Miller crossed his path when he wanted to make a quick dash into his office. "You look terrible."

"Thanks."

"Wait, what's that on your face? Is that a cut? What the hell happened last night?"

"It's nothing." he grumbled, trying to sidestep her, but she wouldn't let him.

"You got injured-"

"It's fine, Miller." Alec stressed every word loudly, just so holding on to his temper, but causing Miller to snap her mouth shut instantly and several co-workers to turn their heads towards him.

"Fine. Sorry, sir." mumbled Miller meekly. Something in his eyes must have told her how serious he was about this otherwise she would've yelled back at him.

Alec gathered himself with a deep breath. "Have the fingerprints come back yet?" he asked her.

"Not yet. It would go faster if we'd take yours, too, for elimination." Alec nodded at her in agreement, then Miller added, "And… how's Jenna? Would she be up for giving fingerprints?"

"I don't think that would be the best idea right now." Alec answered.

Miller hesitated, but then she had to ask again. "What happened to her, sir? It's hard to tell because you obviously had to enter her house by force, but from what we've gathered until now, it doesn't look like anybody except you has been there at all. It would help if we knew what or who we're looking for… if you know any more details?" she questioned carefully.

Alec sighed deeply, ruffling a hand through his hair. He felt uncomfortable sharing Jenna's story without her consent. But maybe this was what he had to do as a policeman. To help her. Maybe he actually never even had a chance to be more to Jenna than a friend with the police to keep her safe. That was what the psychiatrist had thought and it stuck with him.

And even if this was all Jenna wanted from him, he would bloody well deliver. He would keep her safe, if it was the last thing he did!

"Follow me." he curtly said to Miller, turned on his heel and went into his office, not bothering if she actually was following him or not.

She was. Quirking a suspicious eyebrow at him, she appeared in the doorway. "What's with the secrecy?"

"Close the door." Alec ordered.

She did so. "Do you want me to close the blinds, too?" she said in a sarcastic tone, but Alec ignored her and went straight in.

"Jenna has been the victim of abuse for at least four years." he stated bitterly. Miller immediately dropped her teasing and sat down in front of his desk. "I only had a quick glance at her medical file but… it was enough to know that she's been through hell. Of the worst kind."

"Oh, god…" uttered Miller worriedly.

"She had to be in a mental hospital and given heavy medication so she could overcome her panic attacks, but that bastard who'd hurt her has never been charged."

"What?" Miller exclaimed.

"He escaped before they could charge him. Last night, Jenna told me that she saw him. That he was at her door… and I believe her. She was fine until now. There was nothing else that could've triggered her."

"Then this greeting card we found would make sense, I guess." pondered Miller. "Maybe he's letting her know that he's back. He's scaring her deliberately."

"His name is Jack Mason." said Alec. "And he won't get anywhere near Jenna again. As soon as the prints are back and if they're a match, I'll have an officer by her door at all times. No one will hurt her again." he bristled.

Alec didn't have to wait that much longer to get confirmation. The fingerprints on the greeting card indeed belonged to Jack Mason. He was already in the system and, technically, the police in London was still looking for him. By the afternoon Alec knew everything about this bloody wanker. He had been hiding like a coward, wasn't seen anywhere at all as long as Jenna was hospitalized in London. And now that she'd moved away, he apparently thought it would be safe to get to her again. But not with Alec around!

He told Miller that he would go back to the hospital and let the medical staff know that Jenna was still in danger, but before he could do so, he received a text from Daisy. She was back from school and wanted to know what was going on. Alec didn't want to tell her, but he knew that she would worry and if he went to the hospital now there was no telling when he would be back. She deserved some details if he was leaving her alone for god knows how long.

Alec texted her back, saying that he would be home for a quick break and ordered a DC to go to the hospital instead of him. He would follow shortly after.

Predictably, Daisy was shocked when she heard what happened last night. Alec didn't tell her the specifics, just that Jenna was very scared of everything right now and didn't want to be touched because of something that had happened to her before she moved to Broadchurch.

"You should go to her." Daisy said eventually. She was sitting at her desk, doing homework, Alec at the edge of her bed, while they were talking.

"You think so?" he asked her softly and his daughter nodded.

"I think you can make her feel safe and she doesn't have anyone else here, right?" Daisy paused to make room for contradictions, but there were none. Jenna was alone. "So you should be with her." she concluded.

"Are you sure? I don't know when I'll be back." Alec said.

"It's okay." said Daisy. "I'll be fine. Just call now and then, let me know what's going on."

Alec stood to hug his daughter to him before bending down to give her a kiss upon the head. "I will, darling. Be careful, though. Keep all the doors locked. Someone's still out there looking for Jenna."

With that chilling bit of advice he left home and made his way to the hospital. On the way, he received a call from an unknown number and he tapped on his phone to answer. "What?" he barked harshly.

It was the DC, stationed at the hospital. "Sir, err… you might want to come down here. There's something going on."

"What is it? Is someone with Jenna?"

"Just her doctor, sir, but I think she's getting very upset. I've heard her through the door and went in to check. Dr. Silva asked me to wait outside but to call for help from the nurses to calm Ms. Davison down."

"Aargh, for god's sake." Alec cursed and stepped onto the gas. "I'm on my way. I'll be there in a minute." he said.

Alec could hear her as soon as he entered her ward. There was no mistaking. High-pitched and full of fear. If he didn't know better he would think she was being tortured.

Jenna was again in the grasp of multiple male and female doctors, all trying to get her onto a stretcher out in the hallway. She was screaming her heart out, strings of 'No' on her lips and that she didn't want to be touched and didn't want to be hurt.

Alec strode up to his DC, glaring wildly. "What happened!? Where are they taking her?"

The constable looked at him wide-eyed and clueless. Alec was about to yell at him when Dr. Silva spotted him and explained over the noise Jenna caused. "We were working on getting her to remember what happened, but when she did she spiralled quickly into another panic attack. It's much worse than I thought."

"Why would you make her remember?" Alec argued.

"She has to. Otherwise she can't move on from it. I thought these episodes were only triggered by nightmares, but she is more unstable than that."

"That's because the threat is real. Jack Mason was at her door!"

Silva nodded. "Your DC has told me as much. All the better that we're taking Jenna to our mental clinic."

"What?" exclaimed Alec.

"We're much better prepared to treat her there and she will be safer. No one can just walk in and visit her."

Just then Jenna's screaming increased in volume as the doctors had managed to secure her for the transport. Alec gazed at her, horrified of the terror that must be in her mind.

"No-no! Please, he's gonna hurt me! He's gonna find me! I have to hide, let me go! Let me go!" They were getting out a long needle. Jenna struggled harder, but there was no escape anymore.

"No!" Alec called out as well, stepping closer, but it was too late and the needle sank into Jenna's leg. "What are you giving her?"

"A calmative." said Dr. Silva. "I'm afraid she's going to need stronger medication after all."

"Alec."

His head whipped around. Jenna wasn't gone yet. Her eyes were getting visibly heavier but she had spotted and recognized him. Alec was positively shocked, but he quickly came close to her stretcher. The doctors weren't stopping him. "I'm here, Jenna." he said to her, hands kept to the railing of the stretcher.

"Alec," she repeated. "Don' let 'em hurt me. Don' let 'em."

Jenna was slurring her words, but he could understand her perfectly. "I won't let anyone hurt you, Jenna. I promise."

She was breathing raggedly and in an apparent moment of perfect clearness, she stretched her fingers and brushed them lightly over his hand. Then her hand dropped and her head lolled to the side and she was out.

Alec didn't move a muscle. The skin she had touched tingled in amazement of the magnitude of Jenna's action.

"DI Hardy?" Dr. Silva said to him. "We have to move her now."

Alec stepped back. "I'll go with her." he announced.

"You can, but she'll be out for a while this time. She probably won't wake up until next morning. And even then it can still take a while until she's properly lucid again."

Alec ran a hand through his hair, watching how Jenna was wheeled away. "Why would you give her those meds again? She didn't respond well to them before."

"I know, but her body is under a lot of stress during these episodes." said Silva. "This is the only way she can relax properly or else the attacks will happen more often and it'll be even harder to bring her back from them. We'll take good care of her, see to that the black moods don't overtake her, but this is the best way."

Alec wasn't convinced, but there wasn't much he could do about it. Because of his pacemaker he had to take pills for the rest of his life, too, and they were helping him fine. Maybe he should trust the doctor more. "I still wanna be there when she wakes up." he said and nodded at the DC. "You can go. I'll let you know how the guarding will continue."

The DC nodded back and went away while Alec followed Dr. Silva and Jenna.
