Welcome back everyone, I hope that you'll enjoy this chapter here! Just reminding anyone who hasn't been here in a while that I'll still try to answer as many reviews as I can. I just ask that you try and keep them constructive.
We'll be getting into duels in this chapter! Make sure to let me know if I choreographed them ok or not. Gonna do my best with them, but this is my first time. Forgive me if they feel too… lame.
-Warning! Long alert about the structure and rambles of Duels-
First thing I want to say is that it is a nightmare to try choreograph these Duels, as well as building character Decks. Having to look at all the different cards in the anime, the risk that I completely miss details like card effects, getting LP's scored wrong… the list goes on. The absolute worse thing is that I can't actually play these Duel's to see if they are being played legally or not. I don't have EDOPro which I think (don't quote me on that) is the most popular site for making your own Duel's. I have Dueling Nexus, but that's VERY rough when trying to make story Duel's without anime cards. So yeah, this might be the biggest issue for me when it comes to the Duels.
I should also mention now that I am struggling to decide whether to have all cards in the duels use their anime abilities compared to the real-life abilities. Some cards like the Egyptian Gods for example, will keep their anime abilities, I mean that's guaranteed. But then are minor cards that have effects that either differ ever so lightly, or change completely. For the most part, I'm sticking with mostly anime effects. But if I give a card it's real-world effect, then it's because I really just want Eric to use it but I think it's just too powerful.
Also, in some of the Duel Analysis' that you'll see in this story going forwards, you'll notice that there will sometimes be cards classed as [Unknown Card]. This is because that card would not have helped that character in that Duel at all. It could be an unplayable trap, a high level monster; really just a useless card. I know the anime always has a Duelist try to always use their cards as much as they can, and that we are in an era where nearly card in your hand is fully playable from the start of the Duel. Some may be disappointed by this, but it's solely to make writing these duel easier.
Finally, I am aware that there will be plenty of moments where characters could have summoned this monsters, or played this spell/trap. Missplays are inevitable, even the anime Duels aren't free from them all. I know that giving Duel Data at the end of each chapter may come back to bite me in the back towards the future regarding this, but it is a risk I'm willing to take…

Chapter 3: Living The Dream
"Alright you two, make your way to the centre of the stadium. It's time to begin!" Shouted the employee.
Not wanting to be kept away from my childhood dream any longer, I smirked as I marched over to the centre of the stadium, with Josh following me close behind. We made sure to get back far enough from each other, and I saw that everyone else was watching from the side. It looked like one of the employees would be refereeing this game. "Let me just say something." I began. "I've been waiting for a moment just like this my whole life. Don't think I'll be going easy on you kid."
Josh smirked. "I won't be going easy either! Now let's get ready!" He shouted as we both held our duel disks forwards.
"Here we go! Activate holo-images!" We both shouted as two small parts of the duel disk launched off from the device, and landed not too far away from us, creating a square for the holograms.
"Duelists ready?! Now begin!" The referee shouted.
"Now, let's Duel!"
-Eric VS Josh-
Eric LP: 4000 – Josh LP: 4000
"The first move goes to Eric!" The referee announced, holding out a hand towards me.
"Heh, fine by me!" I grinned as I drew my card and added it to my hand. I looked down to see what cards I had drawn. Looks I had, The Warrior Returning Alive, Divine Dragon Ragnarok, Mad Sword Beast, Water Magician, Masked Sorcerer, and I had just drawn Soul Rope.
'Hmm, not too bad I suppose.' I thought looking at the cards. Felt weird playing with cards that couldn't really combo off of each other that well by themselves. Wouldn't have minded getting more spells or traps here, but oh well.
'What to do, what to do... I think I'll summon this monster to test the waters with what Josh has here. The chances of me getting OTK'd are near none. In this era of Dueling it'd be a miracle to summon more than three monster without any spells or traps to help.' I thought, as I reached for my card.
"Here goes! I summon Water Magician in Attack Mode!" I shouted, placing the card on the duel disk.
The holograms immediately then activated, with quick shimmering before a purple haired lady with a staff, wearing green and blue robes appeared on the field just in front of me. [Water Magician - 1400/1000]
'Yes, yes, yes! I just summoned a monster!' I was overjoyed in my mind, admittedly giddy with excitement, but I did my best to remain calm and composed on the outside.
"Ahem, now I'll place this card face down and end my turn." I stated, placing my Soul Rope face down in my spell and trap zone.
"Then it's my move then!" Josh declared, drawing a card from his deck and adding it to his hand. "Let's see here… I think use this card, Mystical Space Typhoon!" He cried, activating his spell card. "This card will destroy your facedown spell or Trap!"
'Ah shit.' I thought with annoyance. 'Well, it was a good plan while it lasted.' A large blue typhoon suddenly appeared under my Trap, as it was then destroyed, bursting into holographic pieces.
"Wow, that was Soul Rope!" Josh exclaimed with shock. "Looks like I got lucky there."
"Well I'm pretty good at this game, so you'll need more than luck to beat me!" I challenged.
"Accepted! Now then, I'll summon this monster, Element Dragon!"
The holograms flared to life as they summoned a reddish coloured dragon with cyan wings. He gave a small roar as he was summoned. [Element Dragon - 1500/1200]
"Now go Element Dragon! Attack his Water Magician!" Element Dragon opened its mouth to roar as it breathed fire that surrounded Water Magician, before she was destroyed into holographic pieces. I frowned as my LP dropped by a mere 100 points.
Eric LP: 4000 - 3900
"Nice!" Josh said with gusto. "I'll end my turn with that! Let's see what you can do."
"Hah! Gonna take more a 100 measly points to knock me down!" I argued, reaching for the top card on my deck.
"You can do it Eric!" Cheered Calian from the side. "Don't let this slow you down!"
'It's only 100 points of damage…' I thought with an internal deadpan. 'I've bounced back from far worse situations before. This'll be a chinch.'
"Alright then, it's my move Josh!" I cried, drawing a card from my deck and adding it to my hand. I looked and saw that I drew Neo The Magical Swordsman.
'There we go, that's more like it. Neo has enough ATK points to take care of that Element Dragon!' I thought with a small grin appearing on my face. Did I say how much I was enjoying this? Shame the card game had to get so violent later down the line with all the ultimate evil powers.
"Time for some payback! I summon Neo The Magical Swordsman!" I shouted, placing the card on my duel disk. The blonde-haired warrior that has been involved in numerous lore storylines in Yugioh appeared on the field ahead of me, reading his sword. [Neo The Magical Swordsman - 1700/1000]
"Take him down Neo! Attack his Element Dragon!" I declared. Neo ran forwards and swung his sword downwards slashing right through Element Dragon. Element Dragon exploded into pieces, causing Josh to cover his face from the… holograms?
Josh LP: 4000 - 3800
"I'll end my turn with that. Just try and get over my swordsman!" I grinned, clenching a fist.
"…Don't you think he's enjoying this a bit much?" Whispered one of the KaibaCorp employees (that wasn't refereeing) to his friend.
"Yeah… It's like he's waited his whole life for this…" Whispered the other employee.
I could still hear them despite their whispering, but I didn't care! I was living my dream right now! I saw that Josh was ready to take his turn. "I won't let this slow me down! Here we go, it's my turn! I draw!"
Josh drew his card, and I saw that his eyes lit up a little as he saw it. Was this a comeback for him? He tried to keep a calm look on his face.
"I'll set this monster facedown." He said, setting the monster that he just drew. Was it cheating to try and memorise where your opponent holds the cards that they draw? Eh, probably not. How could they determine that anyway? "I'll end my turn there."
"Going on the defensive already? This Duel will be a piece of cake for me!" I chuckled, beginning to take my turn. "I draw!"
Drawing my card which was Familiar Knight, I thought about my next move here. 'If Josh had a monster that could have gotten over my Neo The Magical Swordsman, he'd have summoned it. But… he seemed confident with that card he drew there. It might have a bad flip effect… I'll take it a bit more defensively here.'
"I summon Mad Sword Beast in Defence!" I stated, as a prehistoric dinosaur that looked like a rhino with a shiny silver horn was summoned, the monster letting out a cry as he was summoned. [Mad Sword Beast - 1400/1200]
'Mad Sword Beast does have the ability to deal piercing battle damage, but I have a bad feeling about that facedown monster.' I thought, choosing to play defensively.
"Here we go, attack Neo! Destroy his facedown monster!" I shouted. Neo flew forwards and leapt up into the air, swinging his sword downwards to attack the facedown monster. As he got closer, the monster was revealed to be…
A green kangaroo with red boxing gloves. [Des Kangaroo - 1500/1700]
Josh smirked. "Des Kangaroo! Block his attack!" Des Kangaroo used his gloves to stop Neo's blade from reaching him, and punched him away, ending the battle. "Des Kangaroo would have destroyed your monster if he had less than 1700 ATK. Guess you got lucky by summoning Mad Sword Beast in Defence."
'He's right about that… almost doubted myself there. Got thing that I was able to catch onto his facial expression earlier.' I realised, breathing a small sigh of relief.
"Alright, I end my turn. Make your move Josh!" I called.
"You bet I will!" Josh shouted as he drew his card. Upon seeing what it was, he actually smirked. Oh boy… "I'll begin by activating the card I just drew, Pot Of Greed! It lets me draw two more cards from my deck!"
Josh drew his two new cards and added them to his hand. I saw his eyes skim over his hand before he continued his turn. "First I activate the spell, Double Summon! This lets me summon another monster this turn! Now I'll summon Masked Dragon! The holograms worked their magic to summon a small red and white dragon. [Masked Dragon - 1400/1100]
"I'm just getting started! Now I sacrifice both of my monsters to summon this powerful monster! Come forth, Big Koala!" Josh yelled as his two monsters evaporated.
A huge light blue Koala was suddenly summoned, with it holding what looked like a miniature tree. This was one of Chumley's cards. [Big Koala - 2700/2000]
"Let's see Neo handle this! Go Big Koala, attack his Neo The Magical Swordsman!" Josh cried out. Big Koala ran forward, and swung down that miniature tree he was holding right on top of Neo The Magical Swordsman, causing him to be crushed into small holographic pieces. I grunted as my LP's dropped more.
Eric LP: 3900 2900
"Not that bad kid." I admitted, seeing my LP's drop some more.
"Alright! I end my turn with that! How'd you like my Big Koala?!" Josh questioned with a grin, folding his arms.
"Your Big Koala? Well he's pretty strong, I'll give him that. But he'd been better off staying in the treetops! It's my turn!" I shouted, with the intention to take things a bit more seriously now.
I drew my card from my deck and looked to see what it was. Excellent. I was finally getting to use this card!
"You're not the only with a Pot Of Greed you know! I'll activate my own Pot Of Greed!" I yelled, playing the card I just drew. The holographic image of the broken pot appeared on the Duel Field. "Now I can draw two more cards from my deck!"
Pot Of Greed left the field as I then drew two more cards. Riryoku and Dark Blade. Very nice. Sadly I seemed to have the water-downed version of Riryoku. I wouldn't be halfing my opponents LP's here. It was pretty busted in Duelist Kingdom where you could gain a maximum of 1000 ATK for your monster, but here you could have gained a maximum of 2000 ATK while still halving your opponent's LP! No wonder it was nerfed, yet it would still be useful for my plan here.
"Here goes! I summon Masked Sorcerer in Attack Position!" A metal masked sorcerer with no lower half wearing purple robes was summoned to the field. [Masked Sorcerer - 900/1400] "Here's where things get interesting! I use the spell, Riryoku! This card will drain half of your monsters ATK and add that to my Masked Sorcerer's ATK!"
As I activated the spell, a gastly, dark hand was summoned and it flew forwards piercing right through Big Koala. Big Koala shrunk in size as his ATK was cut in half. [Big Koala ATK: 2700 - 1350] "Don't worry, those points I stole from your monster won't go to waste. Masked Sorcerer, gain the strength that was stolen!" Masked Sorcerer suddenly grew in size, as the ghostly hand brought the energy into him, raising his ATK. [Masked Sorcerer ATK: 900 - 2250]
"Oh no! That's terrible!" Josh yelled with fear. "Now my monster is powerless!"
"Well things are only going to get worse for you! Next I'll switch Mad Sword Beast to Attack Mode!" I declared, switching the position of my other monster to Attack Mode. This should be some nice damage that I'm dealing, not only that, but…
"Time to battle! Go Masked Sorcerer, attack his Big Koala!" Masked Sorcerer flew forward and casted a spell from his hands that destroyed Big Koala, shattering him into pieces. Josh grimaced as he realised that the worst was yet to come. "Because Masked Sorcerer dealt you damage, I can draw a card!" I declared, drawing a card from my deck. Looks like I drew Rope Of Life. Not bad.
Josh LP: 3800 - 2900
"Now you're wide open for a direct attack! Attack him now Mad Sword Beast!" I commanded. Mad Sword Beast ran forwards and struck Josh directly. Of course, it was all holographic, so no-one was hurt, but Josh still looked frustrated by this setback as he looked at the cards in his hand.
Josh LP: 2900 - 1500
"Alright, I'll end my turn with that. Let's see how you can bounce back from this one." I said, ending my turn, quite confident.
"Oh we'll see alright! It's my turn!" Josh cried. "I draw!" His eyes seemed to light up as he saw this card.
"Alright, time for a refresh of my hand, or should I say Reload? Cause that's what I'm activating! The spell, Reload! This card will let me reshuffle my entire hand into the deck, then I draw the same number of cards that I just shuffled back in!"
'That could be bad…' I thought admittedly.
As duel disks didn't yet have an auto-shuffle mechanic, Josh pulled out his deck and shuffled his hand back into it, before then re-shuffling his deck. He then slotted his deck back into his duel disk, and drew three new cards. He looked satisfied by those cards.
"That's what I'm talking about! First I'll activate this spell, Dian Keto The Cure Master! Now I gain 1000 LP!"
Josh LP: 1500 - 2500
"I'm not done yet, now I'll activate another spell card, Autonomous Action Unit!"
'That's just a worse Monster Reborn!' I rolled my eyes internally. 'Still, it's not like it's good that he's activating it.'
Josh continued. "Now I can pay 1500 LP to bring a monster back from your graveyard to my field! I'll bring back Neo The Magical Swordsman!" Autonomous Action Unit came to life on the field, as the holographic image of Neo The Magical Swordsman was now standing on Josh's field. [Neo The Magical Swordsman - 1700/1000)
Josh LP: 2500 - 1000
I grit my teeth. That was pretty bad. Josh wasn't finished though. "Now I'll use the final card in my hand! I tribute Neo The Magical Swordsman to summon this Monster! Come forth, Luster Dragon!" Neo The Magical Swordsman vanished, and in his place, a large dark green dragon was summoned. Luster Dragon, a pretty good monster for only one tribute. [Luster Dragon - 2600/1400] "How things have turned. It's time to battle!"
"Go Luster Dragon! Attack his Masked Sorcerer!" Josh held out a hand. Luster Dragon let out a huge below as it breathed fire that completely engulfed Masked Sorcerer, destroying him. With that attack, my LP further decreased.
Eric LP: 2900 - 1200
Josh looked confident about his victory. "Heh, now I've got the advantage again! I end my turn!"
"As a good man – or rather kid once said, the Duels never over until the last card is played!" Actually, that line is rather meant to come, instead of already being said… huh. "Now it's my move! I draw!" I yelled, gripping the top card of my deck as I drew it with some force. I looked to see what it was.
Taladon The Swordsman.
I smirked. 'There you are. Now, here's hoping that Duel Disk registers this guy… This will really make or break my situation not only in this Duel, but I guess this world as well…' I thought with some tension running through me.
"Time for me to win this duel! I've got all I need!" I shouted firmly, surprising Josh. "First I'll tribute my Mad Sword Beast to summon this monster!" Mad Sword Beast vanished as I sent him to the graveyard.
"Come forth and fight so that we can win this duel! I'm counting on you, Taladon The Swordsman!" I cried summoning the monster I created many years ago.
The holograms flared as a warrior with blue eyes and brown hair was summoned to the field. His armour was a blue cobalt colour, and he had a sword strapped to his waist. He readied his sword as he drew it from its holster. [Taladon The Swordsman - 2200/1900]
'It worked… It actually worked!' I thought with amazement and joy. 'Now I can win this Duel!'
Josh looked a bit stunned. "Woah, I've never seen that monster before!"
"I wouldn't have thought so. This guys quite rare." I remarked. "And you'll see why through his effect! When he's summoned, I can add a Warrior type monster from my graveyard back to my hand! So, I'll re-add Neo The Magical Swordsman!" As I added Neo back to my hand, I readied the next effect. "Here's the final effect of my Taladon The Swordsman, it can equip a Warrior type monster from my hand to himself!"
"Say WHAT!?" Gawked Calian from the sidelines. He did say that he played with Warriors, so this must be a sight for him.
Taladon The Swordsman held his sword high as it pulsed with power. "Go Taladon, equip the Dark Blade from my hand onto yourself!" The sword suddenly shined a bright light colour, showing that equip was successful… as if Josh could ever disrupt it. "Oh yeah, did I mention that my Taladon gains the ATK of the monster that it equips?"
"No way!" Josh cried in disbelief. "That's super powerful!"
…Oh, if only these people knew what was to come in the future. Moving my thoughts away from the future state of the game, I saw that Taladon had indeed grown in power. [Taladon The Swordsman ATK: 2200 - 4000]
"It can't be! Now he's stronger than my Luster Dragon! He can wipe out all my LP's!" Josh cried with fear.
"That's right." I smirked. "Now go Taladon The Swordsman, it's time to end this Duel! Attack Luster Dragon with Heroic Slash!"
Taladon ran forwards before he leapt up into the air and flew downwards to slice Luster Dragon right down the middle, causing him to explode and deal all the remaining damage to Josh's LP.
"GAHHHHHHH!" Josh cried as his LP's fell to 0.
Josh LP: 1000 - 0
Winner = Eric!
The referee held up his hand. "The winner of this Duel is Eric!" He declared holding up his hand.
I smiled softly. "That really was a great Duel." I took my cards and my deck out of my duel disk, and handed it back to the refreee. Josh did the same, though he looked much more disappointed at the loss.
The Referee spoke up. "Anyone who loses here has the right to leave if they wish to do so. We won't keep you here if you don't want to be here after losing."
Josh nodded sadly. "Yeah, I'll be leaving now… no real point in me staying here…. But tell me this! After this Battle City tournament is all over, will we be able to buy our own Duel Disks wherever we want?!"
All three of the employees looked a bit nervous. "Uh, well… Ahem, Mr Kaiba has spoke about making the Duel Disks readily available for the public…" Even they didn't sound sure about that.
But it seemed to please Josh. "Aw that's great! Well I can just start saving up my money now!" He looked satisfied at his loss, knowing it wouldn't be the last time he'd duel with a Duel Disk. Though I do wonder how expensive Kaiba made them…
Josh took his cards and deck off his Duel Disk and handed it to the referee, before he chose to leave like he said, being escorted by one of the employees. As he was leaving, the other employee that was still here spoke up.
"Ahem, attention Duelists! It's time to begin round two of this tournament! Can Duelists with the numbers three and four make their way up here!" Realising I didn't need to be up here any more, and that I wouldn't be Dueling for a while, I made my way away from the centre of the stadium, and chose to sit down on the chairs at the sidelines. There, Calian was waiting eagerly for me.
"Hey Eric! Man, that was a great Duel you had!" He praised with a grin, nudging me with his shoulder. "You and Josh were constantly on the back-foot, but always managed to bring the Duel back around to your favour! It was so cool to see!"
"Thanks." I shrugged. "I wouldn't say it was anything special, I just Dueled the best game that I could. Trust me when I say that I've gotten out of way worse situations."
"Wow, really?" Calian asked with interest. By now I could see that the next two Duelists were beginning their Duel. Guess it wouldn't hurt to talk to Calian a bit more. I'm sure I can keep these stories of mine vague enough.
"Yup." I replied simply. "My opponent had these huge monsters on the field each of them having over 3000 ATK. I thought it was over me for me, but then I remembered someone who told me that you have to always try and believe in your deck. A Duelists deck may as well be their soul. So, I believed, and what do you know, on my turn I drew the one card I needed."
"What was it…?"
'…Dark Ruler No More… Ah, I remember my opponents rage so well.' I thought brightly back on those days.
"Oh, it was the spell, Raigeki." I lied. "You know, the super rare card that destroys all monsters on the field? I was lucky to get it that turn."
"I've always wanted that card. I've always asked around if anyone in school be willing to trade for it, but it seems like no-one has it!" Calian said sadly. "I guess I put it on my Christmas list…"
"Though speaking of cards I'm interested in, what is that Taladon monster you played there Eric? It looked super cool!" Calian spoke with interest.
"Oh those?" Right, so the card registered on the Duel Disk, and probably KaibaCorp's database from what I saw in my Duel earlier. But it seems like no-one recognises them. I'll have to keep that in mind.
"Oh, it's just a really rare card that I've had growing up. You know how hard it is to find such rare cards that existed years back. Maybe Industrial Illusions didn't print as much of them going forwards." I explained, making up a quick excuse. From what I saw, it certainly worked for Calian.
"Yeah, you're right about that Eric. Those old cards are super expensive and rare. Almost no-one wants to get rid of them…"
"Here's a hint Calian, just open some random booster pack and put the cards in some nice protective sleeves and in a super secret box under your bed. Then in a few years, if you ever need money, just remember that good advice that your old friend Eric gave you. Reach down under your bed and sell those cards." I advised. "Trust me… the game's not going anywhere."
"Huh…" Calian looked interested by that idea. "Agh, but I hardly have the cash to buy fancy sleeves… maybe I can ask… ah, never mind." He quickly brushed away what he was going to say.
We saw that next two Duelists had finished their Duel, and the next two Duelists numbered five and six were about to begin as well. It wouldn't be long until Calian would be Dueling. Wonder how he felt about that?
"So, excited to play with a Duel Disk?" I asked with a grin. "Trust me man, it'll be the best Dueling experience ever for you."
"Oh I'm excited alright!" Calian practically had stars glimmering in his eyes with how excited he was. "This'll be amazing! I can't wait to Duel here! I'll be telling everyone at school when I'm next there!"
"I bet they won't believe you until Kaiba announces the Duel Disk. Knowing him, he'll probably make some big grandiose announcement."
"You know Seto Kaiba!?" Calian questioned suddenly. Oops, maybe I should have worded that a bit better.
"Oh, well… Don't tell anyone but I have met the guy. It was a long time ago." I replied quickly. "He wasn't the nicest of people, and always liked to make a statement more than a presentation."
"…Can you get me his autograph?"
…I was a bit dumbfounded by this, but getting to know Calian so far, I shouldn't have been surprised. "Erm, no… I don't really see him anymore. We met once. Doubt I'll ever see the guy again."
'Until Battle City of course.' I thought. Still had a lot of thinking to do about that.
"Hey look! The Duel there is wrapping up!" Calian said to me, pointing. Surprised, I look and saw that the Duel really was finished. Huh, that was quick. From the looks of things, one of the players might have bricked.
The Duel holograms faded, as both Duelists took out their cards from the Duel Disks, before handing them back to the referee. Like before, the losing Duelist chose to leave, while the winner went to sit back down.
"Looks you'll be up Calian. Good luck! Make sure not to brick!"
"Uh, what?"
"Never mind, just do your best!" I advised him, as the referee began to speak up.
"Attention Duelists! It's time for the final round of this… first round…? Erm, anyway, can Duelists number seven and Duelist number eight come forwards and prepare to Duel!"
"That's me!" Calian cheered as he moved forwards and practically grabbed a Duel Disk in glee. He quickly slotted in his cards and moved to the centre of the stadium. I saw that his opponent was a young girl with the Domino High School uniform. I think her name was Haley? I remember her saying when she announcing herself a few seconds ago.
I sat back on the sidelines, while Calian and Haley stood at the centre of the stadium, ready to begin their duel.
"Duelists ready…?" The referee checked, quickly looking at both of them. "Alright, begin!"
"Now let's Duel!"
-Calian VS Haley-
Calian LP: 4000 – Haley LP: 4000
Both players drew their cards as they looked down at them carefully. I couldn't exactly see what Calian's hand was, so I'd just have to try and hope for the best, and that he doesn't make any errors.
"The first move will go to Haley!" The referee shouted to both Duelists, directing his gaze to Haley.
Haley nodded as she drew her card and looked at it, before adding it to her hand. "Alright, I'll begin by summoning Gemini Elf, in Attack Mode! The holograms buzzed as they summoned a set of two mischievous looking Elf's who were back-to-back. [Gemini Elf – 1900/900]
Haley looked at her cards again, before continuing. "I'll end my turn by placing this card facedown on the field. Now, it's your move." The holograms created a facedown spell or trap card behind Gemini Elf.
"Alright. Here we go!" Calian cried as he drew a card and added it to his hand. He grinned.
"I'll summon Dark Blade in Attack Mode!" Calian declared with joy as he placed the card on the duel disk. The holograms summoned a knight in dark armour that had white spikes and two huge blades that he held. [Dark Blade – 1800/1500]
Haley gave a small smirk. "Nice monster, but it's just a little short from beating my Gemini Elf!"
"Yeah, he is." Calian admitted. "But not for long, cause I activate this card, The A. Forces!" Calian activated a continuous spell. "This card will give all my Warrior Type monsters an extra 200 ATK for every Warrior that's on my field!" As he declared that, Dark Blade seemed to grow just an extra bit bigger. [Dark Blade ATK: 1800 – 2000]
Haley looked a little troubled by this. Calian seemed to bank on that. "Looks you've realised that you're out of your league! Go Dark Blade, attack Gemini Elf!" Dark Blade ran forwards and prepared to slice his blades down towards Gemini Elf.
Haley immediately giggled. "I don't think so! Activate trap card, Magic Cylinder!"
"What?! No!" Calian cried as two magical cylinders appeared where Dark Blade was attacking.
I winced. Ooh, this would be rough.
"Magic Cylinder will negate that attack and deal you damage equal to your Monster's ATK points!" Haley explained with a small laugh.
Dark Blade's attack was absorbed by the first cylinder, before the second cylinder pulled with magic, shooting out a blast on energy that struck Calian.
Calian's LP: 4000 – 2000
'Calian just lost half his LP's there… He better have something good to make a comeback. Of course, it's Haley's turn next.' I thought carefully.
Calian grunted a little as he continued his turn. "Alright, I'll end my turn with this facedown card… It's your move…" He muttered with annoyance.
"Here goes!" Haley stated. "It's my turn! I draw!" She drew her card and looked at it. "Alright, I place this card facedown on the field, and then I'll summon, Breaker The Magical Warrior!"
The holograms buzzed as they first summoned the facedown spell or trap Haley set. Then they worked to summon a monster who had red armour on with a pointed helmet. He held a blade and a sword. [Breaker The Magical Warrior – 1600/1000]
'Oh boy…' I thought with apprehension.
"Here's Breaker's effect! When he's summoned, I place a Spell Counter on him." Haley stated. "Because I did that, his ATK will increase!" [Breaker The Magical Warrior ATK: 1600 – 1900]
"Wait, what do Counters do again?!" Calian panicked to himself, pacing up and down on the spot. "I remember hearing about them one time…"
"You won't need to worry about that." Haley assured him sweetly. "Because I'm going to remove that counter to use Breaker's other effect! By removing a counter from him, I can destroy a spell or trap on the field!"
Calian looked shocked to hear that. "He can what!?"
"You heard me." Haley seemed to think about this – even though the choice was obvious to me. "I'll destroy, The A. Forces!" She grinned. Breaker swung up his blade, before it shot out a burst of magic that destroyed The A. Forces. [Breaker The Magical Warrior ATK: 1900 – 1600]
"Now Dark Blade loses ATK points!" Calian cried with fear. Sure enough, Dark Blade grew a bit smaller as his ATK decreased. [Dark Blade ATK: 2000 – 1800]
"Time to battle!" Haley cried with eagerness. "Go Gemini Elf, attack Dark Blade!"
"Nice try! But I activate the Trap card, Reinforcements!" Calian said suddenly as he revealed his facedown card. Haley was shocked to see this. "Now my monster gains an extra 500 ATK points until the end of the turn!" Like Calian said, Dark Blade grew in power. [Dark Blade ATK: 1800 – 2300]
"No! Wait Gemini Elf! Stop your attack!" Haley shouted in protest. But it was too late. Gemini Elf was destroyed as Dark Blade was able to slice right through them both, dealing damage to Haley.
Haley LP: 4000 – 3600
Haley grimaced at how things how turned around for her. "Ugh, my turn isn't over yet. My battle may be over, but I can still play this card, Premature Burial!" She said with energy. "By paying 800 LP's I can resurrect Gemini Elf from the graveyard! Return now!"
Haley's LP: 3600 – 2800
The holograms showed Gemini Elf being resurrected by being brought back up from the ground, as if it had crawled it's way out from the gastly hells that it was just sent to. It stood where it once was as if nothing had happened. [Gemini Elf – 1900/900]
Calian grimaced. "Aw come on! It took me a while to get rid of it, and now it's back? If I don't take that thing down again, it'll just attack me next turn!"
He gave a weak smile. "But it's not impossible."
Haley smirked. "Hmm. True, but it's unlikely. I end my turn there, meaning Dark Blades loses 500 ATK now!" [Dark Blade ATK: 2300 - 1800]
Calian just held his deck tightly with his two fingers. "It's my turn now!" He declared.
"Here goes, I draw!" He said as he drew his card, him clearly hoping that he would have a way out of this situation. He looked at the card that he drew and grinned. "Yeah, that's what I'm talking about!"
'Oh? What did he draw?' I pondered curiously.
"I Tribute my Dark Blade to summon this monster! Here's Total Defence Shogun in Defence Mode!" Calian cried with excitement.
As Dark Blade was sent away as tribute, the holograms summoned an imposing warrior figure who had multiple weapons on his back, while he himself wore some heavy armour. He took a defensive position. [Total Defence Shogun – 1150/2500]
Haley frowned with annoyance. "So you have a monster to protect you. Shame you can't attack with it."
"Actually, he can."
"…What?!"
Calian smirked. "Total Defence Shogun can attack a monster while he's in Defence Mode! Then he can use his Defence points as if it were his Attack points!"
"Say what!?" Haley shrieked in disbelief.
'Ah… the prototype for the Superheavy Samurai Archetype.' I thought with amusement. 'How we confused we all were when we saw that they could attack while in Defence Position…'
"I know that you'll attack me, so I'll use this!" Haley cried as she revealed her facedown card. "Gift Of The Mystical Elf! It will increase my LP's by 300 for every monster I have on the field! I have two, so that's 600 LP's!"
Haley's LP: 2800 - 3400
"Agh, well it won't save your Monster!" Calian shouted with vigour. "Now, go Total Defence Shogun! Attack Haley's Gemini Elf!"
Still keeping a defensive position, Total Defence Shogun lumbered over to Gemini Elf and struck her sideways, slicing both Elf's in half. Haley's LP's deceased.
Haley's LP: 3400 – 2800
"Heh, I've almost evened up our LP's now! You won't be getting over my Total Defence Shogun anytime soon!" Calian challenged with smugness. "I'll end my turn by placing this card facedown." Calian's turn ended as he placed a spell or trap facedown.
"W-We'll see about that! It's my move!" Haley cried. "I draw!" She looked at the cards in her hands for a moment, before then acting. "I'll set this Monster facedown on the field. Then I'll switch my Breaker The Magical Warrior to Defence Mode. [Breaker The Magical Warrior - 1600/1000] That'll end my turn."
"Wow, back to me already?" Calian remarked with fake surprise. "Don't mind if I do! I draw!" He immediately activated the card that he drew. "Time to make a dent in that wall you set up there! And it'll all start with this card, Pot Of Greed!"
"Now I can draw two more cards!" Calian drew two more cards from his deck, adding them to his hand. He looked at them for a moment, before he made his move. "Here goes, I summon Don Zalloog in Attack Mode!"
What? Not the Don Zalloog, right?
The holograms summoned the Dark Scorpion leader with long, straight light-pink hair, wearing a vest and an eyepatch, as he held his dagger and sword. Thankfully, he wasn't aware of his surroundings as if he were alive. He just seemed to be a hologram. [Don Zalloog – 1400/1500]
I found it peculiar that Don Zalloog here didn't have his Anubis eyepatch. Now that was interesting. Zalloog and I suppose the rest of the Dark Scorpians haven't been brought to life yet by the Shadow Charms, so I assumed they were just regular cards for now. Hopefully so… it might be awkward if they suddenly came to life out of nowhere. Duel Spirits would be quite the wild card to deal with…
"I'm not done yet! Now I activate, Monster Reborn! Watch as I bring back my Dark Blade!" Calian shouted as he brought forth Dark Blade, re-summoning him to his field. [Dark Blade – 1800/1500] The best is yet to come, now I activate the spell, Lightning Blade! This equip spell will raise the ATK of my Don Zalloog by 800 points!"
The blades that Don Zalloog held hummed brightly as they shined a bright yellow colour, with dim electricity flowing through them. [Don Zalloog ATK: 1400 – 2200]
'Why would Calian raise the ATK of Don Zalloog and not Dark Bl… Oh… Oh, I see.' I thought suddenly. 'Not bad Calian.'
"Here we go, time to battle! First I'll use Total Defence Shogun to attack that facedown Monster you have!" Total Defence Shogun remained crouched as he expertly threw a blade he held that struck the facedown Monster, destroying it. It was revealed to be a young magician with white robes. [White Magician Pikaru – 1200/0] "Now, I'll have Dark Blade attack your Breaker The Magical Warrior!" Dark Blade ran forwards and struck Breaker The Magical Warrior, destroying him. Now Haley was wide open. "Heh, now Don Zalloog will attack you directly!" Don Zalloog rushed forwards and struck Haley directly, causing her to grunt as her LP's dropped majorly.
Haley LP: 2800 – 600
Calian folded his arms. "Now it's time for Don Zalloog's effect! Because he dealt you damage, you have to send a card from your hand to the graveyard. That's why I gave him Lightning Blade! It's a random card of course, so I'll just choose the card in your left hand!"
Haley let out a sigh as she discarded that card. Was she relieved or disappointed? Hm, it was hard to say. Either way, Calian was certainly happy. "Heh heh, how's that for a turn! I'll pass things over to you now Haley!"
Haley gave a small smile. "Of course. It's my move now. I draw!" Upon drawing her card, her eyes widened a little. "This is quite the perfect card for me."
"Heh, well whatever it is, it won't help you here! I've got three Monsters on my field that can easily beat any Monster you summon that's LV4 or lower! There's no way that you can attack me now!"
"Who said I needed to attack?"
"Say what?"
"You don't need to say anything, just watch! This card has been in my hand throughout the entire Duel. I can only summon him now of course." Haley began. "Now I banish the LIGHT Attribute White Magician Pikaru, and the DARK Attribute Breaker The Magical Warrior to summon this powerful Monster!"
'There's no way!' I thought as I saw a magical portal open up above Haley's side of the field. 'Some kid from Domino High School has-'
"I summon Chaos Sorcerer!" Haley declared loudly.
'…what?'
From the portal that was summoned, a tall slender figure was descended from the inside of it. He had light pinkish skin, and wore black robes that exposed his chest. He had a tall, pointed hat, and also had shoulder pads. In both of his hands, he casted magic that was coloured purple and yellow. [Chaos Sorcerer – 2300/2000]
'That's… not what I expected.' I admitted internally. Calian was shocked to see this, but tried to remain confident.
"Wh-Whoa! So you have a new monster huh? Well he can't beat my Total Defence Shogun! You made a mistake summoning him in Attack Mode! So what if you attack either of my other two monsters?"
"Didn't you hear me earlier? I said that I wouldn't need to be attacking here." Haley reminded Calian. "Time for Chaos Sorcerer to use his effect! Once per turn, I can banish one of your monsters! Go! Chaos Control!"
"He can WHAT?!" Calian shouted with horror. He watched in shock as Total Defence Shogun seemed to glitch and almost look displaced. The holograms struggled to keep this going, as Total Defence Shogun was completely erased from the field.
"No! Not my Total Defence Shogun! I've heard that the banish mechanic is super powerful! Nearly nothing returns from there!" Calian said with disbelief.
"Unfortunately, My Chaos Sorcerer can't attack the turn it uses this effect." Haley said with a fake look of sadness. "But, I've devised a foolproof way to deplete your LP's without ever having to attack again!"
"I activate, Magical Blast! This spell will deal you 200 points of damage for ever Spellcaster I control. I control Chaos Sorcerer, so you take 200 points of damage!"
Calian grunted as a pink/purplish blast struck him.
Calian LP: 2000 – 1800
"Heh, so what? That's only 200 points of damage to me!" Calian stated.
'Yeah… but that's not all that Magical Blast does…' I thought with seriousness.
Haley smirked. "Hm, yes. But Magical Blast has another effect. By not drawing a card during my Draw Phase, I can add this card back to my hand! And I can use this effect as much as I want!"
Calian was stunned to hear that, as his eyes widened. "Y-You mean-"
"That's right!" Haley stated. "On my turn I can Banish one of your Monsters and deal you 200 points of damage! In other words, this Duel will end either with you continuing to summon Monsters, until you can't in which case I'd attack you directly, or I'll beat you by inflicting effect damage to you!"
Calian looked shocked by this plan of Haley's. But I saw a flaw in it. Could Calian spot it though?
Haley smiled. "Now. My turn is over. Let's see what you'll do in this position."
"Hah! I'll get out of this situation easily!" Calian shouted, thought I heard a bit of doubt in his words there. "It's my move, so I'll draw!"
Calian drew his card, and looked at it. "Alright, I'll activate this, Graceful Charity! With this card I can draw three more cards, but I have to discard two of them." Calian drew three new card and looked at them. "Ok, I'll discard these two cards here, then I'll activate this card, The Warrior Returning Alive! With this card, I'll add back one of the Monsters I discarded there, and I chose, Little-Winguard. Next up, I'll summon him in Defence Mode!"
To Calian's side of the field, appeared a young warrior with blue armour, whose face was covered by his thick hood. He held a sword. [Little-Winguard – 1400/1800]
Calian frowned. "I'll switch all my other monsters into Defence Mode as well. [Dark Blade - 1800/1500] [Don Zalloog - 2200/1500] That's my turn over…"
"Then it's my move!" Haley said with joy. "I'll use the effect of Magical Blast, adding it back to my hand, meaning I don't draw a card." Haley added back Magical Blast to her hand. "Now go Chaos Sorcerer! Banish Don Zalloog! Chaos Control!" The holographic image of Don Zalloog warped and shifted as he was eventually removed from the field in an instant.
Haley wasn't finished yet though. "Now I use Magical Blast again, dealing you 200 points of effect damage!" Calian was once again struck by the blast of magic.
Calian LP: 1800 – 1600
"My turn is over." Haley said dryly. "What can you do here?"
"We'll see just what I can do! It's my move Haley! I draw!" Calian drew his card and looked at it. "Ngh, I summon Strike Ninja in Defence Mode."
On Calian's side of the field, a speedy ninja wearing dark blue and gold clothing was summoned, taking a defensive stance. [Strike Ninja – 1700/1200]
"Then I'll end my turn…" Calian muttered.
'The Duel isn't going to end like THIS, right?' I thought with curiosity.
"It's my move! I'll use the effect of Magical Blast, adding it back to my hand, meaning I won't draw a card." Haley added back Magical Blast to her hand. "Now go Chaos Sorcerer! Banish his Dark Blade!"
Calian could do nothing but watch as Dark Blade was banished from the game. "Next comes Magical Blast, dealing you 200 points of damage!"
Calian LP: 1600 – 1400
"That's my turn over. It's your move now." Haley said, folding her arms.
"My move!" Calian yelled as he drew his card. He winded when he saw what it was.
"I… end my turn…"
"Hmph, my move!" Haley announced. "Just like before I use the effect of Magical Blast, adding it back to my hand, meaning I won't draw a card." Haley added back Magical Blast to her hand. "Now go Chaos Sorcerer! Banish his Little-Winguard!"
Calian grimaced as his monster was Banished. With how the game was at this point, there was nearly no way to get cards back from the Banishment Zone.
"Now go Magical Blast! Inflict 200 points of damage to Calian!"
Calian's LP: 1400 - 1200
"You're running out of Monsters and options!" Haley chimed. "This very may be your last turn. I'll end my turn there.
Calian looked down at his deck, and seemed to think about something. "A Duelists deck may as well be their soul…" He said softly.
'Did he just quote me…?' I thought with bafflement.
"Ok. This is it! I mean it this time! I draw!" Calian shouted out loud as he drew his card outwards by quite a bit. He closed his eyes as he brought the card close to his hand. Calian opened his eyes and looked at the card.
"Perfect! This Duel really is over. Hope you enjoyed that last turn of yours Haley… cause it was the last turn you'll ever have in this Duel."
"What?" Haley protested in confusion.
"I'll start by activating this card! Cost Down! It'll decrease the LV of all Monsters in my hand by two! Which means I can summon this Monster with one less Tribute! Come forth and fight with me so that we may win this Duel! You're the strongest warrior that I know, so I have faith in you! Appear now, Gilford The Legend!
Strike Ninja was sent to the graveyard as Tribute as in his place, a large tall figure emerged. He had long flowing red hair and wore a helmet. He wore armour that covered his chest and legs, but kept his arms revealed. Strapped to his back were two swords, and he held a gigantic sword with both of his hands. He let out a proud cry as he was summoned. [Gilford The Legend – 2600/2000]
"Ah! He's stronger than my Chaos Sorcerer!" Haley shouted with shock.
"Yeah. But wouldn't it be cool if he became stronger?" Calian teased as he raised an eyebrow. "Now use your effect Gilford! Take the equip spells in my graveyard and equip them to yourself!"
Gilford let out a cry as he absorbed the effect of Lightning Blade that was previously sent to the graveyard. This boosted his ATK quite a bit. [Gilford The Legend ATK: 2600 – 3400]
'Good move Calian.' I thought with approval. 'I guess that's his boss monster then.'
Haley seemed to lose all her confidence now. "Agh! He's way stronger than my Chaos Sorcerer now! N-No! I came so close to winning!"
"Looks like it wasn't enough." Calian grinned. "Let's go Gilford! Attack Chaos Sorcerer and win me the Duel! Attack with Legendary Halberd Strike!"
Gilford ran forwards as he raised his huge sword and slashed it downwards and completely destroyed Chaos Sorcerer into holographic atoms. Haley let out a cry of defeat at her loss here.
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
Haley's LP: 600 – 0
Winner = Calian!
"The winner of this Duel is Calian!" Announced the referee, holding out a hand to Calian.
"Agh no… I came so close…" Sighed Haley. "I hoped that by making it into Battle City I could finally meet my hero… Seto Kaiba…"
"But now! It's all over!" She huffed as she removed her cards from her Duel Disk and handed it to the referee. She then stormed off, knowing that she wouldn't get anything by staying here.
One of the three employees ran off to make sure that she actually went the right way. There were a lot of passageways here.
So now there was only four of us here now. Me, Calian, and the two other boys that wore Domino High School uniforms. I think their names were David and Jay? Guess we'd be having our final Duels soon. The two of them were sitting a bit away from me.
"Attention Duelists!" Came the other employee that wasn't refereeing. "We'll be taking a ten-minute break, so you can get ready for the next part of this tournament." He announced, before he quickly ran off to whisper something to his remaining colleague. Weird how they looked worried… Hmm…
"Hey Eric!" Came the joyful voice of Calian. "What'd you think of my Duel there? Pretty impressive, right?"
Looking away from the two employees, I turned to Calian. "It was. I was impressed at how Haley trapped you back there, but I was happy to see that you got out of it! Her biggest mistake was constantly using Magical Blast to skip drawing a card. Had she kept drawing cards, she would have most likely gotten a monster that she could have summoned."
"And that was her downfall!" Calian grinned. "So, what do you think this next round will be about? Just the same as this round of Duels that we just had?"
"Eh, maybe?" I was more focused on the fact that the third KaibaCorp employee had came running back to whisper with his friends. Very weird how worried they looked…
"So, you gonna edit your deck?"
"Hm?" I turned my eyes away from the KaibaCorp employees. "Oh maybe? I guess it wouldn't hurt to add a few extra cards." I did have those booster packs that I bought at Duke's shop earlier today.
"Well, I gotta edit my deck. Can't have anyone trying to guess my moves from my Duel there." Calian said as he moved away from me. "Maybe you should too!"
…Eh, why not?
Making sure no could see me, I turned away the best that I could, and pulled out those booster packs that I bought earlier today. The special pack that I got the discount on was still in my jacket pocket. I'd be saving that for when I hopefully made it to the finals.
I ripped open the packs and pulled out the cards. I had around seven packs, and there was around five cards in a booster pack, so I currently had thirty-five new cards for me to look at.
'Alright, let's see here… Hmm not bad.'
'And this is…. Ok, ok… quite good.'
'As for this card – oh er, no thanks. Not even Yusei could find a use for you.'
'This is nice indeed. Might add this.
I continued to look through my new cards. Some were obviously better than others, that was to be expected. Some, I doubt I'd ever use; but there were some that were tempting to add into my deck.
I spent a few minutes changing my deck, until I felt it was looking pretty good. I turned back around and saw that Calian had also just finished, while the other two boys sat and talked to each other. What was interesting to me was that the three KaibaCorp employees had only just finished whispering to each other.
"Attention Duelists!" Cried the loudest one. "The next round of the tournament is about to begin! Everyone make your way to the centre of the stadium!"
"Huh? Why?" Came the voice of one of the boys at the side (Jay I think?) "Aren't we going to have one Duel at a time?"
"Yes well… things have changed you see-" The employee was cut off as he was elbowed by his colleague next to him. He now spoke up.
"The rules have changed! This next round will be a Four-Way Battle Royal Duel! A 1 VS 1 VS 1 VS 1!"
"What!?" We all shouted in confusion.
