So... I had this idea, after reading 'Movie Dadnik' (by J3llyf1shDust on ao3), for quite awhile and I finally got around to write it! This first chapter is just an introduction of sorts, hence why the short word count. The next chapters will be longer (in case y'all were wondering).

But, anyways, hope y'all enjoy this new story :)

Today marked 10 years since Sonic (forcefully) came to Earth, and he couldn't feel lonelier. He distracted himself, as usual, from the more-than-usual intense loneliness he faced almost daily. Pretending that he had a family, that he had friends, and that he was with Donut Lord and Pretzel Lady on movie nights, not just by their window.

Feeling an indescribable loneliness from watching the baseball game he so desperately wanted to be part of. His brain begged him to think of how he had been on earth for 10 years. On how, for 10 years, he has been alone. The only glimpse of his existence being real coming from Crazy Carl.

To make his stupid brain stop thinking about everything he had gone through. He decided to play baseball at night, so no one would see him. Excitement rushed through his body, making him momentarily forget his immense loneliness. As he was getting ready, a golden circle appeared in the middle of the baseball field.

Why did one of the rings appear on Earth, let alone in Green Hills? Who could it be?!

Sonic's eyes widened at the realization that it could be one of the echidnas.

Casting aside the thoughts of how the echidnas could even know where he was, Sonic, using his superspeed, hid in the bushes right beside the field. And then... a small fox with yellow-orange fur and two tails... appeared? Definitely not what he had been expecting. The fox was shivering and whimpering, clutching a backpack to his chest. While he hadn't seen any mobians for a decade, this little fox couldn't be more than two years old.

Sonic's slight feeling of fear transformed into an overwhelming concern for the little kit. Why was such a little fox alone, distressed, with no one by his side? Where was his family? As he waited a whole minute to see if anyone else would come out of the portal, he took notice of how lost the little fox seemed. Sympathy and compassion ran through Sonic's core.

After a minute passed, the portal had fully closed, and the fox remained at the same place, analyzing the scenery while still tightly hugging his backpack. No one was with the kid? How did the kid have access to the rings at such a young age? (which Sonic realized almost immediately was a very ironic thought, but still, Sonic was pretty certain that their parents or guardians were giving their rings, or even one for that matter, to a two-looking-year-old toddler).

Sonic rushed towards the kit. Even though this was going to be the first time in a decade that he was going to have a conversation with someone, the little fox needed someone, and that someone had to be him.

"Hey, are you okay? What's your name?" Sonic asked softly, kneeling down to his level.

The fox looked up at him with wide eyes, definitely surprised at his sudden appearance, especially because of his super speed. However, those same wide eyes were also filled with fear and wonder.

"Who...who are you?"

"I'm Sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog." He finished with the most welcoming smile he could master at the moment. The kit was still scared of him, and, so, he wanted to make it obvious to the toddler that he was trustworthy and that he wasn't going to hurt him.

"I'm... I'm Tails. Well, that's my nickname. My real name is Miles Prower, but..." Tails said, hesitating slightly but seemingly warming up to the hedgehog. Sonic took notice of how Tails' speech was surprisingly good for someone who was, at most, two years old.

However, Tails was unable to continue his line of speech as tears started welling up in his eyes.

"I...I don't have a home." Tails began, some tears rolling out of his eyes, "I don't have a family. I don't have any friends. No-no one likes me because I have two tails!" Tails finished, burning his face full of tears in his backpack.

Sonic, putting Tails' backpack aside, wrapped his arms around Tails and hugged him while he felt some of the little fox's tears roll down. This fox really had no one, had he? Tails reminded him a lot of himself when he first arrived on Earth, when he was just three and a half years old. But even then, before he had come, he had Longclaw. He had someone. Tails didn't. But that would change now! Tails needed a friend. And Sonic was also going to be his friend from now on (and, honestly, Sonic needed a friend as much as Tails needed one, too. His loneliness had been getting worse and worse lately).

"Tails," Sonic began once they stopped their embrace and Sonic wiped Tails' tears, "you don't have to be alone anymore. I'll be your friend, if that's what you want, of course."

"Really? You mean it?" Tails replied, looking up at him with gratitude and hope.

"Of course I do."

The little fox started jumping uncontrollably out of pure happiness, saying 'yes' and 'thank you' multiple times. Sonic couldn't help but chuckle at the Tails' pure excitement. He was so cute! There was no way he was going back to how things were before, he was so going to keep this kid.

"Now come on, let's get you inside."

He picked up Tails (and Tails' backpack) and carried him to his cave. He gave him some food (coming from the 5-star restaurant called 'Trash Can') and water and told Tails he had to keep hidden from humans, and his—well, now, their—cave was the place to do so. Tails, in return, told him some stuff about himself (including that he was, indeed, two years old) and how he could fly with his two tails, which was really awesome! Eventually, Sonic said something that left Tails shocked.

"You're going to let me stay with you?" Tails asked, looking very excited and happy in the cutest way possible.

Sonic nodded.

"Even though I have two tails?"

What did Tails mean? Having two tails is honestly a pretty cool thing, especially since he can fly with them.

"That doesn't matter to me." Sonic began, and Tails looked somewhat surprised and confused. Why was he surprised? Sonic genuinely didn't understand why. "Two tails or one tail, it wouldn't change how I see you! If anything, I think you're cooler with them. Your two tails are a literal gift!"

"A gift?" Tails asked, still a bit confused.

"Of course, bud. You can literally fly with them! I wish I could do that!" Sonic said it as sincerely as he could. For whatever reason, Tails felt that his tails were something to be ashamed of, and Sonic wanted to make sure Tails understood that he should feel the exact opposite. The little kid is just two years old, he shouldn't have an insecurity of this kind to begin with.

"You-you really think that?"

Sonic nodded, smiling softly.

"Thank you… You're the first one who told me that." Tails said, gratefulness apparent in his face and voice. Sonic's heart broke even more. How could he have been the first one to say his tails weren't a bad thing? What came into people's heads to even say something like that to the little fox?

"You're welcome, Tails. You're very welcome..." Sonic said, masking his growing concerns about Tails' past.

They snuggled on the couch, and eventually Tails drifted off to sleep in Sonic's arms. Sonic couldn't help but smile. After enduring a decade of profound loneliness and isolation, he finally had someone by his side—a friend. Even though there was an age difference of over 11 years between them. But as Sonic was falling asleep, he couldn't help but feel something more than friendship towards the young kit. His new friendship with Tails felt somewhat paternal to him. Perhaps it was just his tiredness and drowsiness playing tricks on his mind. After all, someone who was only thirteen and a half years old couldn't be a parent... right?
