Chapter One:

"Stop! Thief!"

A young girl gasped as she was caught stealing a few granola bars and an apple from a grocery store stand. She took off and ran as quickly as she could, dodging random people in the street, hoping no one would grab her.

And after a running down a few blocks and ducking into an alleyway that no one even knew about, she was safe.

"That was too easy." She grinned, plopping down on the ground and taking a bite out of her apple, stuffing the granola in her pocket for later. "Mmm."

She hadn't had a real bite to eat in days, so she was more than hungry.

She grew up in the system, and her most recent foster parents were terrible. They obviously favored their rotten biological children and treated as if she were a prisoner and they were her wardens.

She had to get out.

So she did.

It wouldn't be the first time she ended up on the streets and it probably wouldn't be the last.

This was her life.

When she finished eating, she saw two women duck into the alleyway and it looked like they were looking for something.

So she quickly ducked behind a barrel and watched them as they came closer.

"They said she usually comes to this alley, so she has to be here somewhere." One of them said, holding up a phone.

"She's here."

So they were looking for her…...

By this point, the girl figured that she at least had a chance if she got up and ran now, as opposed to if she just let the two get closer.

So, tipping over a trash can, she flew from her hiding spot and sprinted towards the street.

She wasn't fast enough.

One of the women caught her and held onto her so she couldn't escape.

Great.

All of this over a few granola bars and a lousy apple?

"Let me go!" She screamed, kicking at the younger of the two. "Let me go!"

"We're not gonna hurt you." She tried. "Just relax okay? You're safe with us."

"I'm not safe with anyone! Let go of me!" The child tried to give whoever was holding her, her full weight, but failed when she was lifted.

"I need you to stop screaming. We're not going to hurt you. We just want to help. I'm Skye and the woman holding you is Agent May. We work for SHIELD." The one named Skye introduced herself and her partner. "Have you ever heard of SHIELD?"

"Yes." The young girl nodded warily. "But that doesn't mean I believe you." She tried to rip herself free again, but was so hungry and dehydrated, she didn't have much energy.

"You're smart and you're right, you don't have to believe us. We'll prove it to you." Skye smiled gently, pulling out a badge. "Does that help?"

"Maybe."

"Good." Skye chuckled. "You look hungry. Do you want something to eat?"

The curly-headed kid looked at her with a raised eyebrow before nodding.

She was way too hungry to even worry about these people potentially poisoning her.

"Okay, I'll make you a deal." The agent looked her in the eyes. "You don't run away from us and we'll take you somewhere to get some food. You get a nice, hot meal if you don't run. Deal?"

"Deal. Can you let me go now?"

May let the child go and eyed her carefully, looking for an indicator that she might just take off.

"What's your name kid?' She asked, already knowing the answer, but she didn't want to startle her.

"Selena."

"Is that it?"

"Selena-Marie and that's all I know." Selena shrugged, picking up her prized food that had fallen from her denim jacket pockets when she was grabbed. "Where are we going?"

"I know a place with some nice home-cooked meals." Skye wiggled her eyebrows.

"That sounds nice." Selena nodded in approval.

She still didn't feel right about going off with a couple of strangers, but the hunger pains in her stomach were her main priority.

So she followed them to a little restaurant that had food from all around the world and slid into a booth next to Skye, with May sitting across from them.

From what she gathered thus far, May didn't say much.

Selena couldn't tell if she was glaring at her, or sizing her up, but it wasn't pleasant to have someone stare at you with an unflinching look.

Luckily for her, a waitress came by to take their order.

"Hello, my name is Helena and I will be your waitress for today. I'm sorry, my English is not too good…...Perdóname." She smiled sheepishly.

"It's okay. You're doing fine." Skye encouraged her. "Selena, why don't you order first?"

Selena looked at the menu and found what she what she wanted and showed it to Skye.

"That's it? You can have that, but get something else with it. Don't worry about the money."

"Oh…...okay…...um…...puedo tener arroz y habichuelas y una alcapurria?" Selena asked, shocking both May and Skye.

"Claro que sí." Helena wrote everything down in her notepad. "Y ellas?"

"Alright Selena, you're going to have to help me out here." Skye chuckled. "What was that last thing you ordered? I'm feeling adventurous."

"Alcapurria? It's like a fritter. It's fried green plantains or yucca…...or both, with beef on the inside, which is picadillo. It tastes good. You can have some of mine if you're not sure."

"No, you know what? I'll try it."

"Skye quiere alcapurria también." Selena ordered for her. "That's not a whole meal, can I shared my rice and beans with you?"

"Sure." Skye shared a look with May.

Selena sure was a nice kid.

"Y usted?" Helena asked May.

And to Selena's shock, May smiled at her and pointed to the menu. "I'm not feeling particularly hungry right now, so how about you pick something out for me? What's your favorite?"

"Okay!" Selena lit up. "I like empanadillas with guava, but that's a snack. I like the chicken too. Mofongo is too heavy for right now."

"Okay." May nodded. "Empanadilla con la carne de res. Gracías."

"Hey! You tricked me!" Selena's jaw dropped as Helena went back into the kitchen. She had no idea she could speak the language.

All May did was smirk.

The food was delicious. It reminded Selena of home.

Well…...she didn't actually remember her home, but if she did, she thought that this is what it would be like.

Laughing, talking, eating food that was carefully cooked to perfection and not wondering where the next meal was coming from.

Maybe one day she'd really know what that was like.

"Soooo." She looked at the two women awkwardly. "What now?"

"Now, we take you in." May put it bluntly.

"Take me in where?" Selena furrowed her eyebrows, kicking herself for sliding onto the inside of the booth because now she couldn't get out.

"SHIELD."

"Why? What for?"

"That's classified."

"That's crap." Selena shot back. "I know my rights and I'm not going anywhere with you. I appreciate the food, but I'm not going."

"Okay." Skye spoke up after getting a nod from May. "Plan B."

Selena watched as she shot up and she tried to climb away, but Skye grabbed her and threw her over her shoulder.

"Unruly kids, am I right?" Skye chuckled nervously at the rest of the diners before walking out of the restaurant with Selena kicking and screaming.

She was brought to a black van and thrown in the backseat before Skye and May climbed into the front.

Okay.

She wasn't thrown.

She was lightly tossed, but for dramatics sake, she was thrown.

As soon as she got her bearings, she tried unlocking the doors, but apparently, the child locks were on!

"There's nowhere you can go Selena." Skye smirked, looking through the rearview mirror. "Just relax. I promise this is all going to make sense in a few minutes."

"No it's not!" Selena screamed and tried to climb into the front seat to grab the steering wheel, but May put up the partition, foiling her plans. "Let me out of here! I'll call the police and the F.B.I., and the C.I.A!"

"She's so dramatic." Skye laughed out loud. "Watch this. I swear, all kids are the same." She turned around to look at said child. "Hey, if you stop screaming and throwing yourself around, when we get to where we're going, I'll get you some ice cream!"

Selena froze for a split second.

She loved ice cream!

No! This was wrong! She wouldn't comply! Not even for ice cream!

"You're kidnapping me! I don't want your ice cream! So there! This is illegal! Did you know that! Illegal! You're going away for a long time for this!"

"Alright Selena." May opened the door once they got their set location.

"No." Selena was too tired to physically fight, but that didn't mean she was going anywhere willingly.

In reality, she just looked like a petulant child who didn't get what they wanted from the toy store.

They couldn't make her do anything she didn't want to do.

"Let's go." The older woman hauled her out and dragged her through the hallway.

Okayyyyy.

Maybe they could.

But she didn't have to like it.

"Kidnapper!" She tried to wiggle away, but was dragged to a lab where there were some other accomplices waiting.

"Remember when I told you this was all going to make sense?" Skye asked.

"Yeah."

"Sit down."

"Okay." The young girl eyed everyone in the room before sitting in a stool. "What's going on?"

"The minute you were born, SHIELD had their eyes on you." A woman with an English accent handed her a file. "We weren't very sure why, but after meeting Skye and looking into her background we figured it out. Open it."

Selena, for once, did as she was told and opened the file.

She couldn't believe what she was reading.

She had a sister.

A sister!

"I know it's a lot to take in." Skye told her gently. "I grew up in and out of foster homes and I didn't want that for you at all, so when I found out about you I had to find you. No one should grow up alone."

No one should grow up alone.

"I can understand if this is too much for you and—"

"—Why couldn't you just tell me from the beginning instead of freaking me out with the whole 'dragging me here against my will thing'?" Selena bit back a sob.

"Because SHIELD wants you for more than what's in that file…...and if we didn't come and get you, someone else would've. I'm sorry. That sucked."

"That really sucked." Small tears trickled down Selena's cheeks in contrast with Skye's.

Her sister.

"Can I have that ice cream now?"

A/N: Thank you for reading this far! Tell me what you think! This idea has been swimming around in my head for a while and AOS just ended last week, so thst kind of fueled this.
