It was a busy morning in the streets of Washington DC, the majority of the people on their way to work. It felt like the city was just waking up. Sam was standing in line at the little kiosk she loved so much to get her cup of coffee for the day.
Lately it has become a habit to walk Jack to his office. As she was off duty for the time being she had started to walk with her husband. Keeping her a little routine while she had stopped working at all and just concentrated on growing that little life inside her.
She absentmindedly stroked her round belly while she waited for the woman in front of her to complete her order. The wind caught her hair that she had tied in a ponytail. It has grown during her time in Atlantis. Sam smiled as the memories came back about her post as base commander.
After that long year there she was back for her valuation when she was told by Woolsey that she was relieved of command, effective immediately. She clearly remembered how pissed she was at that rude announcement. She was still recovering from that nasty flu that got her a stay at the infirmary while Dr. Keller had her on antibiotics when they scheduled her trip to earth.
Richard Woolsey told her that he was taking over from her now and that she will have her belongings sent to her in the next few days, she didn't even get to say goodbye to her crew.
Entering their Colorado home she headed straight to the rooftop. To the spot where Jack and her used to spend many nights looking at the stars, here she felt safe. It wasn't long afterwards that she heard a car in the driveway and the driver slamming the door shut.
Instantly Sam knew it was Jack. And he was equally pissed. As much as he longed to have his wife back in his arms and earthside, the way they relieved her of command was outrageous. She climbed the ladder down to meet him in their living room. How he was able to get home that quickly from Washington DC she didn't know, and she cared even less, she was just glad that he was here. When she got back inside through the backdoor he had just put down his bag, looking up to the noise that she made while entering. Their eyes met, showing so many emotions at once. Hurt, annoyance, regret, sympathy, but most of all they saw joy. Jack's joy for having her back home. Sam's joy for being home with her husband. Seeing that chocolate brown eyes again makes the rudeness of her transfer less hurtful.
"Sam…" he started, but didn't know what to say. He wanted to tell her that he wasn't aware of all of this, that he was sorry for how and when that happened, but at the same time he wanted her to know how much he had missed her and that he was happy to have her back for good, healthy and in one piece.
Jack didn't need to voice those feelings, she already knew.
That was the night their little miracle was conceived.
Flashes of memories from that night rushed through her head. They had been in each other's arms instantly, undressing the other one while their lips hung together. The first time they made love that night he took her right in the hallway against the front door, neither of them able to make it to the bedroom.
Sam was interrupted in her thought by the waiter, asking her for her order. She blushed and hoped he couldn't guess which thoughts he had crashed with his question.
Just as she was about to speak, movement next to her caught her attention. It was the woman who had been in front of her. A tall man bumped into her and grabbed her bag, spilling her hot tea over the woman's hand, she let go of her bag and the thief started to run. Her instincts kicking in Sam ran after him, even 6 months pregnant she was still fit and quick. When her doctor told her it was okay to continue her daily jogging routine, that's what she did.
So that and years of being in the field made her go after the thief. At the corner of the street she'd caught up to him, kicking his legs to bring him down. She was about to straddle him when he turned around, trying to fight her off. It was just then when she was reminded of her pregnancy and he recognized her belly. That brief moment of hesitation was all it took her to secure him while one of the men around them stepped in to help her. Together they tied him with a belt that was handed to them from another witness.
The man offered her his hand to help her up, she gladly took it.
"Thanks!"
"You're welcome." The stranger replied. Realizing her condition he asked: "Are you alright?"
She closed her eyes to listen to her body for a moment and then nodded. "Yeah, I think so. Thank you for your help. Pregnancy is a bit of a barrier in doing this." She jokes.
"It looked like you knew what you were doing." he stated, but it was more like a question of what she was doing for a living. "You're a cop?"
"God, no." She shook her head. "A Colonel in the Air Force. I've been on a front line team for a very long time. I guess that's what made me go after him." She nodded towards the man who was sitting on the paveway, embarrassed that he got caught. "Did anyone call the police?"
A woman nodded, but you could already hear the sirens coming closer.
The moment the radio message about the foray came in, the officer closest to the area immediately responded. "We're on our way."
He got out of the car to call for his partner.
"Hey Shanahan, we have a mission, get your ass over here."
"I'm coming." the man answered. "What have we got?"
"A foray, they also called in the ambulance."
"Why? Was someone hurt?"
"No, you won't believe it. The woman that stopped the thief is pregnant. They just want to make sure she's ok despite the fight. That's all I know. Are there no brave men anymore? Do women actually have to take care of everything?" He asked amused.
"There are a lot of brave women out there, Patrick. Come on. Let's go."
They arrived before the paramedics did. Patrick was about to take the man into custody and walk him to the car while his partner approached the woman to record her statement before she got checked out.
"Ma'am, are you alright? Can you tell me what happened?" He already asked before he even reached her completely.
As soon as she turned around he was left speechless.
"Pete!"
"Sam!"
There she was, the woman he had wanted to spend the rest of his life with, who he had to let go before she even had been truly his. Pregnant. He knew who fathered her child without her having to say it.
"My god, Sam, are you okay? They told us they would call the ambulance because the woman in the fight is pregnant, but I didn't expect it to be you."
Unconsciously her hand drew circles over her belly where her baby was moving. She felt a bit uncomfortable but not concerned.
"I think I'm good. He's moving more than I'm used to, but it doesn't feel wrong."
"He?" Pete whispered.
"Yeah, it's a boy…" she hesitated. "Look, Pete, if you're uncomfortable with this, talking to me, I can talk to your partner, you just have to say it."
"No. God, no. That's not it. I'm sorry Sam. I just wasn't prepared to see you here."
"Me neither." She chuckled. "Since when are you stationed in DC?"
"A few years now," he told her. "When I left Colorado I asked for the transfer. And what about you?"
"After my stay in Atl…let's say overseas, I came back from my first command and Jack is working at the pentagon right now." Sam hoped that was a good enough explanation to stop him from asking more questions. She knows that she had hurt him back when they were engaged and didn't intend to open old wounds.
He smiled at her, a real honest smile. "Congratulations Sam! You deserve this. So, was he finally the right one that made you marry him?"
Thinking about her husband made her smile. "Yes, Pete. He did. I'm sorry for how I treated you. It was never my intention to hurt you, I just didn't realize early enough that I already gave my heart away a long time ago."
"I can't deny that I was hurt. But that's in the past and I don't hold it against you. I knew from the start that you were holding back on me, but until the end I hadn't figured out why. Today I'm also married… we… We have a daughter."
"I'm glad to hear that you're happy!"
"Thank you, Sam!"
His partner approached them after he took care of the thief and the victim. "Shanahan, got everything we need? I talked to the victim and when you're ready here we could drive to the police station. And also the paramedics have arrived to take a look at her." He gestured in Sam's direction.
With the initial shock of seeing Sam again he had completely forgotten why he was here. He'd wanted to record her statement.
"Just give me a second. I'm nearly finished." He lied and Sam giggled.
He walked her towards the ambulance and hugged her goodbye.
"Bye Sam! It was good to see you. I hope everything is okay with the little one."
"Thank you, Pete. Yes, it was good seeing you. Seeing that you're happy and don't hold a grudge against me."
She was brought into the hospital where she and the baby got checked out. Everything was looking exactly how it should, so she didn't bother contacting Jack.
Coming home afterwards she sat down on the couch, putting her feet upon the table and finding a comfortable position. That's where her husband found her, asleep, when he came home from work. He sat down on the coffee table next to her feet and watched her for a moment. Jack knew she wouldn't take long to wake up, she always knew when he was watching her. Slowly opening her eyes she was faced with Jack's. Concern was showing on his face and she knew that he knew what happened today.
Although Washington was a large city there were a lot of military people around. Her husband, General O'Neill, as the head of Homeworld Security was well known and she herself wasn't less familiar to a lot of people. And the pentagon was as good for gossip as was the SGC, the rumor mill must have worked overtime today.
Nervously she straightens herself, nibbling on her lower lip as she holds his gaze.
"Hello you!" He said, came closer to her and kissed her. "How was your day? Anything interesting you want to share with the class?"
She looked at him through her eyelashes and blushed. But by the tone of his words she knew he wasn't angry. If something would have been wrong with the baby he knew she would have called already. So he looked more amused, the rumors had reached him for sure.
"Funny that you ask…."
