When the sun had risen, Aang and his friends had packed up and left Ember Island and traveled towards Roku's Island, a forgotten isle. The yellow sun was shining, the sky was blue and the weather was normal. Aang used Airbending to surround himself, his friends and Appa in a large fog of clouds to disguise themselves.
"Wait, so Avatar Roku told you to take us to his old abandoned island?" Zuko asked.
"Yeah. He said that it's time that I learned about his relationship with Fire Lord Sozin." Aang told Zuko while bending air.
"And how do you know this?"
"He talked to me. In my sleep." Aang replied.
Zuko paused.
"Here we are. It's Roku's home." Aang said they had landed on the abandoned isle.
"But... there's nothing here." Katara said, as she looked around. There was nothing but two large volcanoes on the massive isle.
Toph jumped off of Appa's back and landed on the ground, feet first. She could feel the rubble and destroyed homes beneath her feet. "Yes, there is. An entire village. Hundreds of houses... completely buried in ash."
Zuko looked around in the scenery and spotted two large volcanoes from below. He never been to this isle, but something felt very familiar about Roku's island. He just couldn't put his mind on it. "I've heard some stories about this place when I was a kid."
"Really? What kind of stories?" Katara asked.
"Stories like, Avatar Roku lost control and destroyed the island-or that my great-grandfather Fire Lord Sozin had clashed with the Avatar in their final showdown." Zuko said, as he tried to think up some stories in his youth.
Toph walked next to Zuko, without looking upwards at him. "Sounds like to me that the Fire Nation wanted to make Avatar Roku sound like the bad guy and Fire Lord Sozin the hero." Toph said.
"Uh, right... if you put it like that." Zuko took a step away from Toph. He didn't feel creeped out or annoyed by her, but it just felt awkward.
"I'm going to look around and see if I can find a place where I can meditate." Aang told his friends before leaping off elsewhere with Airbending.
"Well, I guess we should set up camp." Katara said.
"Good idea." Sokka said, then turned to Toph, who was seemingly staring at the ground.
Toph quickly Earthbend and created an earth tent big enough for one person. "I call dibs!" She then ran inside and lied down on her back.
"Okay..." Katara turned to Zuko. "Hey, Zuko. Can you help me set up the tents?"
"Sure." Zuko replied. He immediatley walked over with Katara and Sokka to retrieve the equipment from Appa's saddle.
Later on that Night
The stars were out, the crescent moon was out and there were no others in sight. Aang's friends had already set up camp for the night, for they don't know how long they were gonna be there. Meanwhile, Aang had meditated on a cliff. He sat down on a rock and begun making his way into the spirit world.
Katara, Sokka, Zuko and stared at the funny positions Aang was giving, as he squatted. They had awkward looks on their faces,
"Does the Spirit World have bathrooms?" Katara questioned, as she watched Aang act like he was using the bathroom.
"Apparently not." Sokka said.
"So, who's going to watch twinkle toes?" Toph asked as she stared at the ground.
"I'll watch him." Zuko volunteered.
"Aou sure?" Katara looked to Zuko.
"Yeah. I'll make sure no one bothers him while he's in the Spirit World." Zuko said.
"Yeah, uh... The last time I remember when Aang was in the Spirit World, you kidnapped him, back at the North Pole." Sokka reminded Zuko, during the time when the Fire Nation had invaded the Northern Water Tribe. He had knocked Katara out and took Aang with him in the blizzard.
"Yeah. I remember that. I'll try not to take him far, this time. And if someone else comes for him, I'll protect Aang with my life." Zuko told Sokka.
"But, you can't Firebend, remember?" Toph chuckled.
"I know how to fight, other than using my Firebending. I'm also a swordsman." Zuko told Toph, then turned around and looked at Aang. "Just get some sleep. All of you."
"You're the boss." Toph shrugged, then walked off.
"Hey, I thought I was the leader, here!" Sokka walked after Toph.
Katara paused for a moment, as she looked at Aang briefly, then at Zuko's backside. She stayed quiet for a moment before leaving after Sokka and Toph.
The Next Morning
Aang had woke up and returned from the Spirit World. He had just learned the entire history of his reincarnation's lifetime. Now he's standing on a cliff with his friends and started explaining the history of his past life, Avatar Roku and Fire Lord Sozin to his friends.
"You mean after all Sozin and Roku went through together, even after Roku showed him mercy, Sozin betrayed him in the end?" Katara questioned, as she summed up their relationship.
"It's like these people are born bad." Toph said, then thought about Zuko. "No offense."
"None taken. But I get where you're all coming from. The Fire Nation has done a lot of damge for the past century. Ever since I was a kid, I was told that the Fire Nation was the greatest nation in the world. But after with the North Pole, I begun to see the aftermath of what the Fire Nation had done to others. Especially to those within the Earth Kingdom..." Zuko thought back during his journey with his uncle Iroh and that he was now considered a traitor.
During Zuko's journeys, he people who were victims of the Fire Nation. A girl named Song, who was a victim of the Fire Nation and had a scar on her leg. A young boy named Lee, who lost his brother and grew a liking to him, until he revealed himself to be Fire Nation. A freedom fighter named Jet, who wanted Zuko to join his group, until he learned that they were Firebenders. And he dated a girl named Jin, a girl who liked him, but Zuko was too scared to reveal his lineage to her, hoping she would shun him.
"I was told that the world respected my great nation for our battle prowess. But in reality, they hate us. For the past hundred years, all we've done was destroy everything we touch and ruin people's lives with hate. I don't know where that hate came from, nor do I know what caused my great-grandfather to go mad, but I'm sure Avatar Roku tried his best to stop him." Zuko told his friends.
Something had clicked within his mind. "Zuko has a point. Roku was just as much as Fire Nation, as just as Fire Lord Sozin, right? This proves that anyone is capable of doing great good and great evil."
"So, you think that Fire Lord Sozin did the thing he did, because he wanted to?" Sokka asked, as he placed stood and placed a hand under his chin.
"Yeah. And I also thought it was about friendships, too." Aang smiled.
"Do you think friendships can last for lifetimes?" Toph asked. Suddenly, she felt her hand being grasped by Zuko.
"Probably." Zuko said as he grabbed her left hand.
Toph tried to hide her blush from her friends as she grasped Zuko's hand.
Aang then grabbed Zuko's left hand and Katara grabbed Toph's right hand.
Sokka paused, thinking for a moment. "Well, scientifically speaking..."
"Just hold hands with us, Sokka!" Katara demanded.
Two seconds later, Sokka quickly grabbed Katara's right hand. The five of them stood at the edge of the cliff and watched the sun rise. Suddenly, Momo and Summer had joined in. Summer landed on Zuko's right shoulder and Momo had landed on Aang's head. And then out of nowhere, Appa had appeared behind them, watching them hold hands.
