Chapter Start

Theren's POV

It was a sunny day with no clouds in the sky and sunlight filtering through the drapes. My eyes slowly fluttered open as the memory ended. I felt fully refreshed even though I had never actually fallen asleep, and it had only been a few hours. I smiled as the happy memory replayed in my mind of the great joy I felt when I realized my father was proud of me.

As I climbed out of bed, I headed to the window in my room, pulling back the heavy drapes. "Wow," I exclaimed in surprise, my eyes wide with excitement. The beautiful sight of the sun slowly rising over the horizon of the pristine landscape was almost as beautiful as the forests of Evermeet.

"Wait, that's not right. I grew up in the city, didn't I …" I wondered aloud, my brows furrowed in confusion. That was another thing I recently noticed. I could recall all the events of my character's life, even things that weren't stated in my character's back story, like what my character's parents looked like or what their names were.

(That's right, I grew up in the city of … uh, what was its name again) I thought as I shook my head in confusion, trying to remember the name of the city I grew up in.

"That right, New York," I exclaimed as the name finally came to me. The sudden grumbling of my stomach put a premature end to my contemplation. As I turned to head downstairs, the smell of freshly cooked food reached me.

"It seems the servants took the initiative and made breakfast without being told to; good," I said, nodding in approval.

After casting my usual defensive spells of Mind Blank and Death Ward, I went to the dining room and was greeted with the sight of another feast "good work," I said to the invisible servants as I dug into my lavish breakfast.

30 Minutes Later

After finishing breakfast, I headed outside into the fortress courtyard. "Report on what happened on your patrol last night," I called out to my simulacrum. Suddenly I heard the sound of flapping wings as my doppelganger descended from the sky, they landed and retracting their wings before kneeling before me.

"A few goblin scouts poked about, but none dared enter the clearing, and they fleed at the sight of me. It seems they've learned to stay away from this area," the simulacrum answered in a voice eerily similar to mine.

"Still, we should continue to fortify our defenses just in case they get any ideas," I told the simulacrum. "Now that I've established a home base, I think I should check out the village I saw yesterday," I said as I summoned my familiar Aurora.

"There is a village nearby that I want you to scout out" at my command, it took off in the designated direction.

I used our connection to see through the hawk's eyes as Aurora flew off. One advantage of familiars is that one could share their senses with one's familiar. Suddenly I saw the world from a different perspective. It was disorienting, to say the least, seeing my own body and the fortress from a literal bird's eye view.

Aurora flew through the air, allowing me to take everything in at once. It was as if the entire forest was laid out before me. I could see the fortress and the clearing surrounding the forest it resided in and the beautiful crystal clear lake nearby, and even the bodies of the goblins from the other day. As Aurora continued to fly through the forest, I even saw them at the edge of our shared vision what looked to be to goblin village (something to investigate later,) I thought.

As Aurora reached the village, she began to circle the village overhead, giving me a better view. Many people were running around frantically as men wearing heavy armor cut them down. I was so surprised by the sight I accidentally broke my connection with Aurora.

My vision began to swim as I lurched forward, trying to hold back the desire to puck. The other day, I had killed many goblins, but those were just monsters. I wasn't used to the sight of so many people being butchered.

"How dare they," I said as I narrowed my eyes in anger. Without thinking, I immediately sprang into action, "Teleport."

Carne Village Outskirts

"Where am I" wondered aloud. That was the problem with teleport; the range was unlimited. In theory, one could travel from one side of the planet to the other instantly, but when traveling somewhere one hasn't been before, there was always a chance of failure. But one could eliminate any chance of failure by using an object taken from the location in the last six months or a teleportation circle.

"I need to get a better idea of where I am," I said as my wings came out and I took to the sky. I looked around and saw the village just a bit further ahead. "So I'm not too far off good. Still, I should probably keep my hood up for now. I don't know if elves exist in this world or what the people of this village's relationship with them is," I said, preparing to head down into the town. Until I heard a woman scream; turning to look, I saw a young blonde-haired girl clutching a small child. A man in heavy armor stood over them, sword in hand.

"Disintegrate," I shouted, launching a disintegrate using my quicking metamagic to cast the spell as fast as possible. The green beam of magic struck the knight head-on, turning him to dust.

As fast as possible, I landed in front of the girls, and my wings flared open wide in concern. Seeing the deep slash wound on the older girl's back, I cast a spell "Heal." Suddenly, a green light surrounded the girl as the wound healed in seconds. "Are you okay?" I asked, eyes wide and concern in my voice.

"I'm fine," a trembling voice stuttered as the older girl stood up, standing between the smaller girl and me. "My name is Enri Emmott thanks for saving me, but who are you," the girl asked.

"My name is Theren Starflower. I'm an adventurer," I say as I turn to face her.

"Was that magic you just used?" she asked, eyebrows raised in surprise.

"Yes, so you've heard of magic before" I sighed in relief that she understood. The last thing I needed was her freaking out.

"Of course, I have a friend named Nfirea, a pharmacist, who also uses magic," the girl replied.

"Good, you understand. Now tell me, why are these men attacking your village" I asked the girl.

"Later, for now, you need to save the others. I beg of you; if you do, I'm sure the village chief will reward you," Enri begged, desperation clear on her face.

"Alright, it's a deal," I said as I took off into the air.

Carne Village

I approached the outside of the village, landed, and retracted my wings. Hiding behind one of the homes on the edge of the village, I cast a spell, "Disguise Self," Suddenly, my appearance shifted to become identical to that of the soldiers in the village.

As I walked to the center of the village, I saw the soldiers had gathered all the remaining villagers in the center and were preparing to execute them. On my way, several soldiers noticed my approach but didn't say anything when they saw my appearance.

"Alright, men, finish them," the commander ordered a look of grim determination on his face. Two armored men stepped forward, swords drawn and raised, prepared to kill the remaining villagers.

As quickly as possible, I cast Dominate Monster on the commander using subtle spell casting so I wouldn't be noticed.

The soldiers were just about to bring their weapons down upon the helpless villagers when suddenly the commander, now under my control, called out, "Hold sheath, your weapons were retreating"

The soldiers turned to look at their commander in astonishment "are you joking? Why?" one of the men asked.

"I was ordered to cull the villagers, not wipe them out entirely. The higher-ups have plans for this village, or do you want to be the one to explain to them how we screwed up the mission" the commander replied.

After that the soldiers began to sheath their weapons and slowly made their way out of the village. Suddenly, the commander turned to face one of his men.

"You will stay here until you receive orders from the capital," the commander said, pointing at my disguised form.

"Why do I have to stay" my disguised form pretending to ask nervously.

"I need someone to stay here and manage things in the village while we head back so will have to stay behind," the commander said

"And as for you villagers, we have graciously shown mercy to you peasants, so you are to obey the man I am leaving here until we return refuse and we will return to finish the job," the commander told the villagers before he and the rest of his men left.

The villagers watched in shock as the men who were about to kill them all left peacefully.

"Did that just happen?" one of the villagers asked in shock.

"You're welcome; I'll take that payment now," I called out as I dropped my disguise.

The villagers turned to face me in surprise at my sudden transformation.

"My name is Theren Starflower. I am an adventurer that was passing through when I met a girl named Enri who was being attacked on the road outside your village. She told me I could receive payment in exchange for saving your village," I said, attempting to calm them down. The villagers breathed a sigh of relief and began to visibly calm down at hearing my words.

"I don't understand what just happened. How did you make those men leave" an older bearded man asked, stepping out from the crowd.

"It was just a domination spell, you are the village chief, I presume," I said, forming a small flame on the tip of my finger to emphasize my point courtesy of prestidigitation.

The village chief grasped my hand with both of his shaking it profusely "yes, and I can't thank you enough for saving my people. Come with me, and we will talk of your reward," he said, a bright smile on his wrinkled face.

Later

Ultimately I realized I probably had more money than these villagers would ever see in their lives. So instead, I decided information would be more helpful. After that, the village chief told me everything I wanted to know. To start, I learned that this village, named Carne village, was a small community on the edge of the Re-Estize kingdom. After talking, I found out my money from Faerun wasn't good here, although the metal itself was still good. After that, I asked if I could keep the map the village chief showed me, and he gladly gave it to me.

I also spotted a few books in the corner I was interested in. I couldn't read this world's language, but there were spells that would help me learn more about this world. After asking about them, the village chief gladly gave them to me.

Then I learned the men who attacked were soldiers from the Baharuth empire, which was in perpetual strife with the Re-Estize kingdom. He also said that the Slane Theocracy might be behind this, trying to pit the two nations against each other.

After that, he explained who the Slane Theocracy was, and I immediately hated them. It turned out they were a bunch of human supremacists, religious wack jobs, and were currently engaged in a war of extermination against the elves. Any elves caught had their ears cut off and were sold into slavery which was how they financed the war. (How dare these barbarians commit such crimes against my people. It was because of humans like those the elves had to nearly completely abandon their homes in Faerun for the safety of Evermeet) I thought white-hot rage coursing through me as I recalled the tales my parents had told me of how they were practically chased out of Faerun after the retreat when nearly every elf left the continent for the safety of the island of Evermeet.

Later that day

The sun was still high in the sky, and the villagers began the funeral preparations. You could smell the salt and tears in the air as they dug the graves Enri and her sister seemed particularly distraught at the loss of their parents. But this wasn't surprising; everyone in the village had lost someone to the attack, but to lose both of one's parents at such a young age was genuinely tragic.

I felt my heart break as the young girls wept over their parent's corpses. "I'm sorry, maybe if I had gotten here earlier, this wouldn't have happened" I gave my condolences to the girl trying to hold back tears.

"It's okay; you did what you could me and my little sister wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for you, I guess we'll just have to find a way to get by without them after it's not like we can bring the dead back to life," said Enri as she wiped the tears from her eyes.

"Maybe you can't …but maybe I can!" I exclaimed in excitement. I had brought people back from the dead before during my campaign. Usually, I would use wish to cast the spell resurrection to bring people back to life, but that wouldn't work here there were too many dead. I thought about this as my wings sprouted forth, and I slowly rose above the dead. (Wish isn't strong enough; I need something more I need to use a miracle) I thought as I called on the power of one of my magic teeth. I could feel the power course through me as I began to glow with a bright light. This light expanded like an explosion covering the entire area.

When everyone opened their eyes, they were greeted with a sight they hadn't thought possible one by one, their dead stood up, wounds healed to embrace their loved ones.

"This is incredible I had heard powerful magic casters could revive the dead, but to bring so many back at once is truly an astounding feat. You must be a mighty priest," the village chief said in astonishment, tears streaming down his face.

"A Sorcerer, actual, but you're welcome," I replied, happy it had worked.

"You have our eternal gratitude for this," said the village chief as he and the others cried tears of joy.

Later

It was sunset, and there was music and the smell of food in the air. I could hear the sounds of partying. The villagers were so thrilled at having their loved ones brought back that they decided to throw a festival to celebrate and thank me. I was dining on freshly grilled pork and drinking some wine the villagers had given me. It was not quite as good as the food from my fortress.

I was chatting with the village chief when suddenly a concerned-looking villager rushed over, dripping with sweat and concern on his face, when he spoke, "a large group of men on horseback are approaching the village."

"Is it the same men from before?" I asked, placing my meal to the side.

"No, it's not," the villager said

"I guess we'll find out who they are in a second," I said as I and the village chief went to greet them.

I could see a large group of armored men on horseback rushing towards us, a cloud of dust trailing behind them, and the sound of hooves like thunder. Eventually, they stopped the leader of the men, a large muscular man with short brown hair, a beard, and piercing eyes got off his horse to speak, "I'm Gazef Stronoff, the chief warrior of Re-Estize kingdom. We are here to protect this village to whom am I speaking."

In response, the village elder approached the man, "I'm the chief of this village."

"Well, met then, now tell me what happened. Our information said a large group of enemy soldiers was seen approaching this village, but we see no trace of them here. Why are you holding a festival, and who is this strange robed figure," Gazef asked, confused by this turn of events.

They had expected to find this village in ruins, its people dead. The most they had hoped for was to maybe be able to provide aid to those few survivors that manage to escape or hide. But to find the village and its people completely intact and in the midst of a festival of some kind was certainly a pleasant surprise.

"I can explain the soldiers did come here and indeed killed many of our people, but this man standing here drove them off using so kind of magic that affects the mind. And then brought all of our dead back to life, so we decided to hold a festival to celebrate the return of our loved ones and as a thank you to our savior," the village chief says, introducing me.

Gazef smiles as he extends his hand to me. I return the gesture and shake the man's hand

they felt rough and strong, the hands of a man who had spent his life training. "If that's true, then the Re-Estize kingdom owes you a debt of gratitude. And I must say you must be quite the magic user to have accomplished such a feat. From what I've heard, only the greatest adamantium class adventurers could do even half of what you've done. May I have your name."

"My name is Theren Starflower. I'm an adventurer," I replied, smiling.

"Well, I thank you for all you've done, but I must ask to talk to you privately," Gazef said with a grim look.

Later

"Are you sure?" I asked.

"I am; it has to be the Slain Theocracy no other nation could field so many mages at once, and it seems they joined up with the men you drove off early. I guess they were Slane Theocracy soldiers in disguise," Gazef explained.

"I take it they're after you," I asked.

"More than likely, to think even the Slane Theocracy wants me dead," Gazef smirked.

"You seem to be a mighty mage. Can I hire you," Gazef asked.

"What will I receive in exchange," I asked. I wasn't interested in money; I already had plenty of gold, though I was always interested in acquiring more magic items.

"I do not know, but I will see to it that the king will reward you personally," the Gazef replied.

"You've got a deal; now let's kick some Theorcacy ass," I said with a smirk.

Outside Carne Village

The sun had just begun to set on the horizon. The sun, moon, and stars occupied the sky at once as the beauty of twilit filled the open field. The chief warrior of Re-Estize and I faced down the army before us. The soldiers from early had joined forces with the mages to form one powerful fighting force. Dozens of mechanical-looking angels summoned by the Theocracy filled the sky.

"Well, well, it seems our prey has walked straight into our trap," a well-dressed man from Theocracy said with smug confidence.

"And you are," I asked, annoyed by the man already.

"Nigun Grid Luin, commander of the sunlight scripture, one of the six scriptures of the six gods, and in the name of the six great gods, I will see both you heretics dead. Still, originally we were planning on just killing Gazef, but to think we'd get the chance to kill a powerful elven magic caster as well truly this must be the guidance of the gods." Nigun replied with a smirk.

Shock covered my features as I heard the man's words, "how could you have possibly found out I was an elf? I've never even met you before."

"Simple after you foolishly let my men go, I sent a few spies into the village and found out what you had done. Our commanders are trained to resist magic that affects the mind. Yet, you overcame his defenses so easily that implied a high degree of magical aptitude, something your repulsive kind excels at. Also, the fact that you always kept your hood up made it even more suspicious. But it was your name that truly gave you away, Theren Starflower. Oh yes, I've been hunting your kind long enough to recognize an elf's name when I hear it. At first, I assumed you may have been an enemy agent sent here to undermine the Theocracy's mission. Still, the fact that you were foolish enough to give your real name instead of a false one and that you were soft-hearted enough not to kill my men when you had the chance tells me you can't possibly be a soldier no trained agent wound ever make such mistakes. Still, you possess power beyond what those of your kind normal display. I'm guessing you are one of the elf king's bastard offspring playing adventure. I'll tell you what I'm feeling generous today, so if you surrender, I will be sure to offer mercy," Ningun replied.

"Mercy, I highly doubt that," I replied. Anger slowly built in me at the man's words.

"Oh, I'm a man of my word. I assure you we at the Theocracy are experts at breaking your kind, and I could always use a powerful slave at my command. I'll even spare you the usual procedure of branding you though those repulsive pointed ears you little animals are so proud of will need to be cut off. It helps make your kind more bearable to look at. I'll even promise I'll only whip you three times a day, so what do you say," Nigun laughed with a cruel smirk on his lips.

"Don't listen to his childish taunting. Let's show him what we've got," said Gazef placing his hand on my arm and trying to console me.

I slapped his hand away. My wings flared at my sides as I slowly rose into the air, my violet eyes glowing with magic, murder filling my heart. "Sorry, Gazef, but I must kill these bastards myself."

"Wait, you can't possibly take them all on by yourse-" Gazef started to say before being cut off as waves of magic and fury began to roll off me.

"Nigun of the Slane Theocracy, I promise for every elf you've enslaved, every life you've cut down. I will bring ruin to your entire kingdom not a single brick or stone shall remain by the time that I am done now. Burn in hell, Meteor Swarm."

After that, the sky began to glow brighter and brighter every one looked on as the sky seemed to be filled with four suns at once, the entire sky turning red. The clouds parted as the ninth-level spell came crashing down. An explosion big enough to level a small city filled the clearing Gaef was sent flying as four fiery suns slammed into the ground.

As Gazef climbed to his feet, he was astounded by what he saw were once an army now lay nothing but four enormous craters filled with nothing molten rock and ash. "Could this be the magic of the gods" The chief warrior of Re-Estize kingdom muttered, eyes wide in shock at the devastation.
