Some people have asked how the dnd 5e and Yggdrasil systems will work together so here you go. First of all the magic system is similar because overlord was based on dnd 3.5 which makes things easier so this is how the systems will work.
Tier 0 spells(which are a thing in the new world but not Yggdrasil) will be considered cantrips
1st Tier spells will be considered first-level spells in dnd
2nd Tier spells will be considered second-level spells in dnd
3rd Tier spells will be considered third-level spells in dnd
4th Tier spells will be considered fourth-level spells in dnd
5th Tier spells will be considered fifth-level spells in dnd
6th Tier spells will be considered sixth-level spells in dnd
7th Tier spells will be considered seventh-level spells in dnd
8th Tier spells will be considered eight-level spells in dnd
Both 9th and 10th Tier spells will be considered ninth-level spells in dnd (The reason for this is the existence of numerous ninth-level dnd spells like time stop, meteor swarm/meteor fall, gate, reality slash/blade of disaster, black hole/ravenous void being 10th tier in Yggdrasil and ninth spells in dnd. And there are also spells like true resurrection which is a 9th tier spell in Yggdrasil and a ninth-level spell in dnd. So ninth-level spells will be considered both 9th and 10th tier)
Super tier spells will be considered epic magic which was a thing in dnd 3.5 but doesn't exist in dnd 5e
Because in Overlord every 7 levels equal another level of a tier magic a level 20 dnd character will be considered level 70 in Yggdrasil.
Although the mc is a bit stronger than level 70 due to epic boons and his charisma score of thirty, I'm guessing he is around level 75 to 80 in Yggdrasil.
Dnd Aritfacts will be considered World-Class items.
Chapter Start
Flashback
It was a dark and starry night on the island of Evermeet in a small village nestled deep in the trees of the ancient wood. I had once gone on vacation to the redwood forest in California and these trees were just as big maybe bigger. The buildings of the village were built into the inside of the enormous trees, done through magic to not harm the trees and blend in with the natural environment.
It was warm with a nice cooling breeze I could smell the scent of freshly cooked venison mother had cooked for dinner. It was my fifteenth birthday and my mother decided I was ready for her to teach me magic. She led me outside and we sat down on a carpet she had laid out on the grass with various material components and magical materials laid out.
I sat down legs crossed my mother did the same facing me. Anastriana my mother was truly lovely. She had soft features skin pale as the moon, and long silver hair with soft gray eyes with long lashes. She wore a simple forest green dress "now my child I will teach you but first I must ask where do you think a person's magic comes from"?
"It varies wizards draw power from the weave, priests get power from their gods, druids draw power from their connection with nature, and warlocks draw power from their patrons" I smiled proud of myself.
"You remember your studies well but let me ask you this where do you think our powers come from," she said a smile on her face.
"I don't know," I said with a pout.
Anastrianna let out a gentle laugh at my expression pinching my cheeks before replying "It's our blood, my child, our blood it's where I draw my power and where yours is drawn from as well".
"I don't understand," I said confused.
"Let me tell you a story long ago when our ancestors first left the feywild to settle the continent of Faerun it was a dark time when dragons ruled the land during a period known as the dawning age or the time of dragons. During this time our people faced many trials the avariel one of the many races of elves was driven to near extinction. But then a great hero arose and slew the dragons and with his army, he drove the dragons away and help bring an end to the age of dragons and create a world where we could live in peace. After his great deed Corellon our creator descended to personally reward him. He gave the hero a precious gift a drop of his own blood, after drinking it the hero found himself overflowing with great magical power the blood of Corellon had mixed into his own becoming a part of him. The man formed a line of great elvish heroes each one inheriting the magic that now lives in our veins passing it on from parent to child for thousands of years. This hero was our ancestor it's he who started our bloodline and why we have the power we do."
I was awestruck I felt so proud to know I was related to such an amazing person "wow mother that's amazing" I shouted in excitement.
"Alright calm down focus today I will be teaching you a simple spell called Prestidigitation it's an incredibly versatile spell but to start I want you to try to light this candle using your magic," Anastrianna said placing a simple white candle in front of me.
"But how do I do that," I asked.
"Focus within yourself on the power deep in your veins grasp hold of it and use it to make your will reality" Anastrianna explained with a patient smile.
Doing as she said I sat there focusing inward searching for the power she spoke of. I sat there for several minutes before I felt my mind brush up against something it felt like a great ball of light in my mind. I focused intently on it it felt warm like the sun but it looked cold like the moon and glowed with a bright white light. As I grasped for it in my mind I felt a great surge of power flow through me I felt electric like I had fire flowing through my veins it was incredible (So this is what magic feels like) I thought as I focus on the candle before me willing to alight.
In response to my will, the candle suddenly lit a small flame dancing before me.
"Yes, you did it" mother cheered in excitement pure joy etched on her face as she wrapped her arms around me. I returned the gesture as I breathed in her scent a nice floral smell like a field of flowers. Her arms were like a warm blanket and I could feel her love and pride for me as I basked in her affection.
Memory End
The Fortress Theren's POV
I smiled at the memory as I slowly came out of my trance. (Another of those strange memories,") I thought as I recalled the incredibly vivid memory.
(I should get ready I promised I would go with Gazef to the capital of Re-Estize today) I thought as I got ready for the day casting my normal defensive buffs and heading downstairs for breakfast.
Dining Hall
As I sat down I looked at the appetizing breakfast the servants had prepared for me. A pile of crepes filled with creme, Nutella, and chopped banana with a light dusting of powdered sugar and a drizzle of chocolate and cherries over top. There was also a large plate of grilled bratwurst and a bowl of fresh fruit. And a mug of freshly ground coffee with cream and sugar and a swirl of whip creme with chocolate shavings and caramel as a topper. "Excellent job as always," I told the invisible servants. I knew they were just magical constructs that didn't think but still, it felt right to thank them weird as it sounds. Satisfied I pick up the polished silverware and ate breakfast.
Fortress Courtyard
"I don't know if it will be safe in Re-Estize I'll need some backup," I said using wish I cast a spell "Conjure Celestial"
A bright light filled the Fortress courtyard as a large blueish green serpent with large pinkish red feather wings and tail materialized it was a Couatl a monster from dnd.
I then followed up that spell with another cast at ninth level via the ruby weave gem "Planar Binding". After that, a silvery cord of magic shot out from me and wrapped itself around the creature before vanishing. And I could feel the creature be bound to my will.
(Why have you summoned me) a voice spoke out in my head as the creature sent a telepathic message to me.
"I needed you to accompany and guard me against harm but first you must blend in so take human form" I ordered.
At my command, the creature began to glow as it used its change shape ability. As the light faded I saw a tall slender woman with well-defined but not overly bulky muscles. She had long black hair tied in a ponytail and vibrant green eyes. She was clothed in a loose form-fitting green dress I could tell by looking at it that it was made for making movement easier during combat.
"Perfect if anyone asks your name is Gabrielle," I said.
"Simulacrum report" I called out. I heard the sound of flapping wings as the simulacrum landed in front of me wings retracting as the magical copy knelt before me. "What do you wish of me," the cop said.
"Here's a sending stone use it to keep in contact with me. While I am away you are to watch over the village and its people as well as your normal duties of protecting the fortress" I said handing him a white stone with a magic rune carved into it.
Sending stones were in essence magic walkie-talkies they came in pairs allowing the holder to cast the sending spell allowing communication across any distance even across dimensions.
"Now take my hand" I ordered the newly named Gabrielle.
At my order, the celestial in the form of a woman grabbed my hand as I cast a spell "Teleport"
Outskirts of Carne Village
Gazef Stronoff and his men waited outside Carn village. Gazef's mind was still racing at the memory of that devastated battlefield. It reminded him of a fairy tale from the age of gods when the six gods of the Theocracy fought off the enemies of humanity, of the legendary spells they wielded. One, in particular, stood out it was supposedly a 10th-tier spell a power only wielded by the gods called Meteor Fall a spell with the power to summon meteors down from the sky.
If so that implied the man was a 10th-tier magic caster that would make the man a threat to the entire kingdom. (Is bringing this man to the capital really a good idea) Gazef thought worried about the events he witnessed on that fiery night.
(No this man saved these people he deserves my respect, not my suspicion) Gazef thought shaking his head.
Suddenly with a flash of light Theren Starflower and a mysterious woman in a green dress appear out of thin air.
(So he can teleport as well) Gazef thought smiling at the man while making a mental note of the ability.
"Sorry for the wait" Theren smiled back and wave to the man.
"Ready to depart to the capital then," Gazef asked.
Several Hours Later
It was high noon the sun high in the sky the heat was uncomfortable and the scenery boring a seemingly endless landscape of flat plains and distant barren hills. I was bored, to say the least, I had considered trying to teleport to the capital but realized it was a good opportunity to get to know Gazef. And he was happy to talk about most things if I pushed but he was unusually quiet especially compared to yesterday. Anytime I ask about Re-Estize political or military situation he dodges the question.
I was about to say something when I got a telepathic message from Gabrielle (master I need to tell you something.)
(What) I thought back curious, she hadn't said anything since we had left the fortress so this had to be important.
(I've been probing the minds of these men for the last few hours with my mind reading ability and it seems they're worried about you they think you might be a threat) Gabrielle thought back.
(Are we in danger) I asked back via our telepathic connection concern growing in me.
(No I don't think they will attack without cause they are quite afraid of you after seeing you wipe out the Theocracy soldiers. Magic in this world is weaker than in Faerun) Gabrielle replied telepathically.
(how so) I asked.
(It seems most people in this world can only use second-level spells third if they are talented with the most talented adventurers being able to cast maybe fourth or maybe fifth-level and the strongest humans alive being able to cast sixth-level spells.) she thought back.
(Damn shouldn't have shown my hand back there like that. What about Gazef what are his thoughts) I asked.
(Do not blame your self master you were protecting the innocent a quality to be praised but next time I would recommend restraint these men are grateful but they fear you and fear can make humans do rash things. As for Gazef, he is conflicted on one hand he fears bringing you to the capital is a mistake he feels you may pose a grave threat to his kingdom. But on the other hand he feels guilt and shame you saved the people of Carne Village as well as his own life so he feels it's wrong to treat you with suspicion, that you are owed more than that. But he still can't shake the fear that was instilled in him the night you killed the Theocracy and the fear that you could do the same thing to the capital) Gabrielle answered.
(I don't blame him he is a good man and a soldier he's only looking out for the being of his kingdom) I replied.
(I had the same impression master) Gabrielle replied.
(Keep an eye on Gazef he seems like an honorable man but if his superiors order him he may try to kill me) I thought back.
(Very well master) said Gabrielle.
Capital of Re-Estize
It was night when we finally arrived in the capital the sun had just set behind the horizon a million shining stars and a crescent moon filled the sky like a canvas. The streets of the capital were deserted the medieval style builds glowed with the light of candles as we approached the castle. It was an imposing sight much larger than my fortress. The word castle seemed inadequate to describe the sprawling palace before me. "I will talk to the king about giving you an audience meanwhile the servants will show you to your room, for now, make yourself at home you're our honored guest," said Gazef a smile on his face as he turned to walk away.
As the greatest swordsmen in the kingdom walked away I saw a maid approach me she had short blond hair and blue eyes and wore a traditional maid's outfit she gave a brief bow and spoke with a clear feminine voice "Please allow me to show you to your room sir".
After reaching the room I was very impressed the room was lavishly decorated and quite nice even for a guest room. "All right Gabrielle I'm going to rest a bit I want you to stand guard" I order as sat up on the bed and slowly fell into a trance.
With Gazef and the King
In the king's personal chambers a luxurious room fit for the man's station, two men sat in private discussing matters most important. Two of the chief warrior's best men stood guard outside the door. Gazef had just finished giving his report to the king discussing the mysterious adventurer that had saved Carne village. "So tell me honestly Gazef what is your impression of this man," King Ramposa asked a hard expression on his face.
"He's incredibly powerful there's no doubt and if he were to ever turn against us it could be catastrophic but I don't feel he's our enemy," said Gazef respectfully.
"Elaborate if you'd please," said the King eyebrow raised in curiosity.
"Certainly your highness Theren Starflower could have easily decided to not get involved in our affairs instead he risked his life to protect the people of Carne village and from what I've seen of him he appears to be a man of honor so I do not think he would seek to harm us unless we gave him a reason to do so. Instead, I feel we would be better served to try to win him over to our side," Gazef explained.
"I feel your right perhaps we should offer him a noble title not only would it reward his efforts it would also serve to tie them to the kingdom" the King suggested.
"Excellent suggestion your highness" Gazef smiled, happy with the outcome.
Unknown POV
It was a dark cloudless night and the stars were sparkling like jewels, the palace was alight with the glow of candles a small stampede of horses came rushing toward the palace. "It seems the chief warrior has returned Eleanor," her fellow maid said to her.
Eleanor Beckett was an attractive woman with short blonde hair and blue eyes in her late twenties dressed in a traditional maid outfit. The very picture of what a maid should be, she had served the Royal Family of Re-Estize as a maid for nearly a decade now. Yes, she was the perfect picture of what a maid should be (too bad it's all a lie) she mused to herself.
Slowly she walked out to greet the hooded figure "Please allow me to show you to your room sir" the maid said giving a quick bow, a serene smile on her face as she showed the guest to his room.
Later
After having shown the hooded man to his room Eleanor Beckett being the proper maid she was returned to her duties of cleaning the palace. Satisfied her work for the day was done she picked up her broom and dustpan and walked through the halls of her place of employment the flickering of candles lighting the way as hummed a tune to herself. She sighed in relief and whipped the sweat from her brow as she entered the darkened supply closet, the smell of cleaning chemicals filled the air.
As she placed her broom and dustpan down she noticed a note on the wall 'Low on cleaning supplies check for details'.
Her eyes shot open in surprise (a message from my superiors) she thought as she grabbed the note and carefully placed it into her pocket.
A sense of purpose washed away her fatigue as she walked back to her room in the maid's quarters as fast as she could. Opening the door to her private quarters she quickly sat down on her bed and lit a single candle sitting on the old wooden table near her bedside. The sound of ruffling paper was heard as the girl pulled the note from her pocket. She held the note over the candle careful not to set it on fire. Slowly exposure to the flame's heat caused ink that was not previously visible to appear on the back of the paper.
The note read as follows 'Agent number 228 you are to eliminate the following target by any means necessary. The target is an adventure that goes by the name of Theren Starflower. The target's description is as follows a young adult elf with short silver hair and violet eyes and wearing a white hooded robe. The target has demonstrated an extreme affinity for high-level magic and is wanted for the murder of Nigun Grid Luin and the complete annihilation of the sunlight scripture. Speculation at this point suggests this individual may be a child of the elf king but little is known for certain. But regardless of their origins the target presents a clear and present threat to humanity and is to be eliminated posthaste. The target can not be allowed to form an alliance with the kingdom of Re-Estize. Upon completion of your mission, you are to report to the rendezvous point and await extraction. This mission is of the highest importance do not fail us agent 228.
Signed Pontifex Maximus'
Sitting there by the light of the candle she read and reread the note over and over until she was certain she had fully engraved the contents of the message into her mind. After she was satisfied that she had memorized the contents of the note she held the paper over the candle and watched as the paper slowly burned to ash.
A sense of calm tranquility washed over the girl as years of intense training kicked in, her mind thinking of nothing but the mission.
The girl blew out the single candle in the room and slowly began to pull up one of the floorboards in her room. Reaching down into the darkness beneath the floor she pulled out a large leather bag.
As she began to strip down and change clothes she knew she would have to say goodbye to the girl known as Eleanor Beckett. She'd had many different names throughout her long years of service to the Theocracy but this identity was by far her favorite it was a simple quiet life, she cleaned the palace and socialized with her fellow maids while discreetly acquiring information for her superiors on the side. And after working here for nearly a decade she could honestly say she was fond of and would miss the other maids but friendship wasn't a luxury someone in her line of work could afford. So it was with bitter resignation that agent number 228 said goodbye to her former alias as she pulled her equipment out of her bag.
Now dressed in a dark navy blue ninja outfit the outfit itself was light and flexible but was strong enough to serve as light armor. She pulled the cloth mask over her head concealing all but her eyes. The mask itself was a magic item that would change the color of her eyes from a piercing blue to solid black the mask could also modify her voice to sound completely different and gave her the power to see in the dark. Checking her equipment she saw her throwing knives strapped to her belt that had been stained a deep black color to avoid reflecting any light and were coated in an incredibly potent poison made from rare plants and Venom extracted from a variety of rare magical beasts. It was expensive to make and dangerous to use if one wasn't careful but it was capable of killing even the most powerful adamantium rank adventurers or monsters in a matter of seconds.
Satisfied she then looks at the short sword strapped to her side it was much like the throwing knives from before dyed black to avoid reflecting light and coating in the same poison. She also saw the dark brown leather boots she wore that had an enchantment on them made to dampen the sounds of footsteps. Next, she strapped several different bags to her belt each one carrying many different tools from smoke bombs to steel wire to mirrors and other useful tools.
Being fully prepared she cast the second-tier spell 'invisibility' and vanished from sight.
Outside Theren's Room
Standing outside her targets room the assassin pulled out a small mirror from one of the pouches on her belt. Squatting down she aimed the mirror at the crack of the door to peer inside. Through the reflection, she saw her target sitting in a meditative position on the bed, and sitting in a chair just outside the door was a tall slender woman with well-defined muscle, long black hair tied in a ponytail, and vibrant green eyes.
(Must be a guard this complicates matters) the assassin thought in annoyance. Still, she wouldn't give up easily the order came from the Pontifex Maximus themself so even if it cost her life she would kill the target.
Quickly making her way outside the assassin slowly scaled the wall of the palace to the second floor the targets room was located on. Peering through the window of the dark room the assassin saw the woman was still focused entirely on the door. "Silence" the assassin quietly said to themselves casting the second-tier spell. The spell would remove all sound within a certain area so there was no chance the woman would hear her open the window or her master's death throws.
She slipped into the window and slowly made her over to the bed as she drew her poisoned short sword from its sheath. Suddenly the woman near the door's attention was drawn by the breeze coming from the open window. (Damn I should have shut that, still she can't see me I just have to wait for her to drop her guard and turn around) the assassin thought angrily annoyed at themself for making such a simple mistake.
But contrary to what she expected the eyes of the woman near the door did not simply pass over her as expected they narrowed on her growing wide with surprise. Realizing the woman had somehow seen through her invisibility spell the assassin charged the bed intent on killing the target before the woman could stop her.
Suddenly the woman began to change and shift growing in size and turning into a large feathered serpent pure rage on the creature's face the feathered servant slammed into the assassin.
Pained filled her as she slammed into the wall, filled with determination to fulfill her mission she climbed to her feet coughing blood into the ground. As she did the feathered servant opened its mouth wide Venom dripped from the creature's fangs as it lunged at her. Deftly leaping out of the way she struck the serpent with her short sword knowing it would only take one strike to kill the creature. But she was forced to watch in shock as the blade bounced off sparks flying from the impact, where she had expected soft flesh she found scales as hard as steel. Knowing she couldn't stop the creature she threw one of her poisoned throwing knives at her target sit sitting clueless on the bed. She smiled as the serpent looked on in silent horror as the knife sailed toward her master knowing it was too slow to stop it.
In sheer desperation to save her master and knowing he would not hear her voice, the serpent sent a panicked telepathic message to her master (SHEILD YOUR SELF)!
On pure reflex a shimmering barrier of magical energy formed around the man just in time to block the knife.
The serpent then turned on its master's assailant wrapping itself around them with bone-crushing force.
The sheer agony that shot through the woman caused her to lose focus on her spells causing her to become visible once again and the sound in the room to return to normal just in time for the sound of a woman's screams and the sound of snapping bones to echo out.
Still, even through the pain the determined assassin's mind raced trying to find a way to fulfill her mission a desperate last-ditch plane formed. If she could not kill the target she could at least ruin any chance of the target and the kingdom of Re-Estize forming an alliance. With the last of her strength agent 228, spoke "oh king Rampose forgive me for failing you" a tear rolled down her face as she was crushed to death by the serpent.
