Chapter Start
Theren's POV
I could feel my heart pounding in my ears as the panic began to calm down. I looked down to see my assailant's broken twisted form as Gabrielle slowly uncoiled herself and changed back into human form. Acting on impulse I cast a spell via wish "Soul Cage".
And a small silver cage materialized in my hand as a light blue mist-like substance began to flow out from the assassin's eyes noses and mouth. The blue mist slowly condensed inside the silver cage taking the form of a spectral silhouette of the assassin. "I'll deal with you later," I said placing the small silver cage in my pocket as I turned to face Gabrielle.
"What happened here" I demanded.
"I beg your forgiveness master I was focused on the door I never thought someone would climb up the second-floor window. She was using magic to eliminate all the sounds in the room and turn invisible. If not for my true sight and them leaving the widow open I would never have noticed them you nearly died thanks to my incompetence I beg your forgiveness" Gabrielle said as she knelt before me, tears leaking from her emerald green eyes.
"I forgive you this individual was clearly a professional we will just need to be more careful In the future," I said trying to comfort the distraught celestial.
"No what I did was unforgivable even if you forgive me I can not I should have been more aware of my surroundings I beg you to punish me I won't be able to forgive myself otherwise," the angelic creature said as it wept.
"Very well you can repent by rededicating yourself to my service and learning how to protect me better," I said back as I stood before her.
Gabrielle got on both knees before me hands clasped together as if in prayer "I promise my lord from this day forward I will dedicate the whole of my existence to ensuring your safety I will never let this happen again I swear" Gabrielle said a fire burning in her eyes even as tears fell.
"Very well first we should take care of this body before anyone comes to investigate if what this assassin said was true Re-Estize wants us dead there really is only one way to know for sure I'll take the body to the fortress for interrogation and you snoop around the castle using your mind reading I'll send my simulacrum to take my place till I know it's safe," I said as I walked over toward the mangled corpse on the floor.
Lifting the body onto my shoulder I looked down at the blood stains on the ground "Prestidigitation" I said pointing my finger at the floor. The blood stains on the floor began to glow for a moment before vanishing like a mist leaving a spotlessly clean floor.
"Here take this sending stone use it to contact me when you've gotten the information I requested," I said tossing the magical item to Gabrielle.
Before I left I recast my usual defensive spells.
"Teleport," I said disappearing in a flash of light.
The Fortress
With a flash of light, I appeared in the center of the castle courtyard the towering stone walls surrounding me and the grassy carpet beneath my feet. The light of the moon filled the fortress courtyard as I heard the flapping of wings as my simulacrum landed before me it knelt down on one knee wings flaring outward in excitement "master I did not expect you back so soon"
"Someone tried to kill and I don't know if I'm still in danger you are to head back there and take my place, here take this and go to my room in the Re-estize Palace," I said handing my simulacrum a small handkerchief I had taken from the bathroom of my room. I make it a point to take small objects from anywhere I go for use with the teleport spell to remove any chance of failure. I was in the process of making a permanent teleportation circle in my fortress and Carn Village but it would take time to complete.
"As you wish," said the simulacrum as they vanished in a flash of light.
(Now to deal with you,) I thought laying the corpse on my shoulder down on the grass beneath my feet. I reached down pulling the mask from the assassin's face, flowing golden hair stained with blood and piercing blue eyes.
(The maid from earlier. This equipment seems high quality I wonder if it's magical) I thought as I used one of my teeth of dahlver-nar to cast detect magic.
Suddenly my vision changed I could see faint colorful auras around me the fortress and its towering gray walls that were surrounded by a cerulean fog and I could sense it was a form of conjuration magic. Next, I directed my attention to the assassin and I could see an aura of brown fog abound their head, boots, and the mask I had pulled off indicating that they were magic items containing a kind of illusion magic. (So these are magic items the mask did seem to change their eye color now that I think about it. This equipment seems very high quality this person is obviously working for someone important. I need answers) I thought.
I pulled the small silver cage from my pocket and looked at the transparent blue human soul floating inside of it. "Tell me why did you attack me," I asked the imprisoned soul. The magic of the cage it resided in forced the soul to give me a truthful answer.
"I was ordered by the Pontifex Maximus the head of the slain theocracy to kill you. After you destroyed the Sunlight scripture they began to investigate you and after deciding you were a threat to humanity they contacted me with orders to eliminate you both to remove a threat but also to prevent you from forming an alliance with the kingdom of Re-Estize after they learned of your existence and your abilities," as the soul spoke a distinctly feminine voice rang out though it sounded rough as if was struggling not to answer.
(I see so that's why she dropped the king's name she wanted me to think Re-Estize was behind the attempted assassination) I thought eyes narrowed in suspicion.
"How much information do they have on me," I asked the transparent soul.
"They know your name your appearance the magical abilities that you demonstrated in Carne Village. They also know that you were the one who killed Nigun Grid Luin and whipped out of the sunlight scripture with a powerful spell," the soul answered.
(They don't know everything but they definitely know more than I'd like how did they bypass my anti-scrying protections, Mind Blank should block any and all forms of information-gathering spells,) I thought in concern.
"How did they bypass my anti-scrying protections," I asked.
"If you have magical protection from scrying the Theocracy shouldn't be able to spy on you via magical means as it doesn't have the capability to bypass high-level magic protections of a mage of your caliber and if they did I imagine their information regarding you would far more extensive then it currently is as it stands they know next to nothing about your origins where you came from your motives or the true extent of your abilities," the soul replied struggling in vain to resist answering the question.
(So they can't bypass my anti-scrying protections then how did they get this information,) I wondered.
"Tell me how they got this information if not by magic," I asked.
"The Slain Theocracy has an extensive spy network I imagine they must have had an agent in the village that saw you and reported your actions to the Theocracy via magic. I am not privy to the names and placement of every agent of the Theocracy so I can't say for certain but it's likely there are spies among Gazef Stronoff's Warband," the disembodied soul replied.
"What will they do now that their plans have failed," I asked the soul.
"They will not give up so easily they will continue to gather information about you using their spy network and attempt to stop you from forming ties with any enemy nations I would expect them to try and assassinate you. Given how powerful you are a frontal approach is unlikely I would expect them to instead try poisoning you or killing you in your sleep," the souls answered.
"Very well that is all I require from you," I said as I opened the silver cage. As I opened the cage door a transparent blue mist leaked out before vanishing and the silver cage crumbling to dust.
I grimaced as I set about the grizzle task of stripping the mangled corpse of its blood-soaked gear. I was always interested in new magic items and they didn't exactly need it any further.
"Servants clean this equipment and store it in my room" I order.
Suddenly the sounds of footsteps were heard and footprints appeared in the grass as the invisible servants set about their task, the assassin's equipment appeared to float through the air.
"Disintegrate," I said as a green beam of magical energy leaped from my finger turning the assassin's body to ash.
(I need another servant one with true sight but built for combat) I thought.
Standing in the center of the fortress courtyard bathed in the light of the moon and the twinkling of stars I began to channel cast a spell. I felt the hot electric feeling of magic flow through me as I channeled the magic that now lived in my veins. Using a ninth level slot and the ruby weave gem I cast the spell "Conjure Celestial,".
A brilliant silvery light filled the courtyard it felt warm and comforting against my skin like sunshine. As the light dulled I saw a breathtaking sight, the radiant beauty of a woman with long flowing golden locks that framed a face fit for an angel with smooth pale skin and ruby red lips. Piercing blue eyes with long lashes reflecting the light of her summoning. Two snow-white angelic wings spread wide as the angel stood up to face her new master. Clad in polished golden plate armor highly decorated long sword and bow on her back a subtle halo of golden light radiant from the woman. She was what was called a battle force angel a monster from dnd.
I then cast another spell at eighth level via the wish spell "Planar Binding" in response to my will a silvery cord of pure magic lept from me and wrapped around the angel binding it to me and my will.
"What are my orders" the angel spoke in a voice like a sweet melody large feathery wings fluttering in anticipation.
"I name you Genevieve, now follow me and guard me against harm there are many that seek my life so be on guard," I told the angelic being.
A stern expression fell onto the angel's face as she drew her sword and took a knee "upon my life, I shall guard you against all harm,".
"Very well," I said as I walked into the imposing walls of the fortress before me.
Later
I sat up from my chair in the dining room of the fortress stretching as I did so I felt full to bursting from the meal the servants had prepared for me I watched as my plate and utensils were carried away by the invisible servants that tended to the fortress. "Your sure you don't want anything," I asked the angelic being by my side.
"Yes while I appreciate the gesture I do not require substance as mortal creatures do," the angel replied stern-faced as usual.
(that's right,) I recalled one of the unique features of battle force angels was their immortal nature they did not require food or water and they never got tired or needed to sleep. In addition, they had an inborn grasp of battlefield tactics and had the innate ability to inspire allies on the battlefield making them the perfect soldier. They also possessed both dark vision and true sight making them an excellent bodyguard.
The flicker of candlelight lit the way as I climbed the hard stone stairs and hallways of my fortress to my room. Opening the door to my personal quarters I could feel the warmth of my fireplace constantly maintained through the night by the servants climbing onto my luxurious bed I slowly fell into my trance or reverie as it was sometimes called as the angel I had summoned earlier stood vigil over me.
Flashback
It was a bright and sunny day a smattering of clouds filled the sky as a ship arrived in port. I could smell salt in the air and hear the crashing of waves as I slowly shuffled my way off the ship and into the harbor of Waterdeep. I felt queasy and nervous it took quite a while to sail from Evermeet all the way to Waterdeep and I felt relieved giving a silent prayer of thanks to Corellon for having gotten off that infernal boat. I had never known I was prone to sea sickness until now needless to say it'd be a long while till I'd ever allowed myself onto one of those flouting contraptions again.
I felt a sense of nervousness fill my being as I walked down the docks of Waterdeep it was my first time ever leaving the safety of Evermeet and meeting humans in general. Before leaving the Island I had gotten in contact with one of my mother's old contacts from her adventurer days and they hired me for a job. After asking one of the dock workers for directions I began shuffling my way from the dock toward my destination and after several minutes of walking, I arrived.
This was where I was supposed to meet my employer as well as the people I was meant to be working with. The Ship's Prow was an inn near the docks and as its name implied the inn was made out of a large four-story tall ship prow. I could see the weathering on the old silver wood. The interior was much the same old warped floorboards and an overall shabby interior though it had a warm homely feel to the place. I could smell the cooking of food and the scent of smoke as I walked over to the bar. The sound of drunken mary making filled the inn.
A young human woman stood behind the bar busy wiping down tables she had long dark hair and eyes and soft olive skin and wore a simple bar maid outfit. "What can I do for you," the chipper young woman asked a pleasant smile adorning her face.
"My name is Theren Starflower I'm an adventurer I was hired by a man named Jhambrote Harkedest," I asked the woman nervously.
"Oh sorry he's out right now but he should be back in an hour or two. But your fellow employees are over at that table please feel free to go get to know them while we bring you something to eat on the house," the woman replied still smiling.
"Thank you I appreciate it," I nodded my thanks to the cheerful young woman and went to sit with those who would become my closet of companions.
Sitting in front of me was a dwarf a short but stout man with a barrel chest and rippling muscle hidden beneath of layer of solid steel plate armor a long flowing red beard reaching halfway down his chest. The beard was braided with various ornaments and polished metals. He had warm but stern amber color eyes and a large battle axe strapped to his back. The dwarf had his head tilted back as he downed an entire flagon of ale bear and foam running down his beard. He slammed the flagon down to the table with a thud before speaking to me "aye that was mighty strong ale not bad not bad at all,". He narrows his eyes at me "so you be my companion you don't look like much nary an ounce of muscle on yea,".
"I prefer spells to weapons," I said creating a small blue flame that danced in the palm of my hand.
"A spell caster then figures your kind does seem to prefer the arcane to good old fashion muscle. So tell me about your self I want to know a man before I trust my life to him." the dwarf said looking me dead in the eyes.
"My name is Theren Starflower I'm a sorcerer I was born on the island of Evermeet. After becoming an adult I decided to leave and become an adventurer and see the world. It's not uncommon for elves to do so after the drawing of the veil" I answered.
"What do you mean I've never heard this term Drawing of the veil, care to explain," the dwarf asked eyes alight with curiosity.
"The drawing of the veil is the event that marks an elf's passage into adulthood. You see when an elf is a child they are able to recall their primal memories back before elves choose to take on a fixed physical form. You see when elves were first created we were formless ethereal beings able to change freely from form to form at will never lingering on one form for long much like Corellon himself. Back in those days, we all lived together in harmony both with each other and the gods. But when we took on a single physical form Corellon punished us banning us from being able to stay in Aryvandaar our heaven where Corellon and the rest of the Seldarine reside. Now when an elf dies their soul returns to Aryvandaar but only temporarily until we reincarnate never staying in paradise this was the punishment our god Corellon gave us for taking on a single form instead of remaining as we were. And now when we trance or enter reverie as it is also called we are able to recall events of our lives. When we are children we can recall our primal memories these memories of better times before our fall are considered quite precious to us. But as we get older we begin to experience memories of our current lives. This marks the end of childhood and the begging of adolescence. Over time these memories of our primal state come less and less often until we reach a century of age when we are no longer able to recall them at all. This is often a very upsetting event for us for those memories of our time before bring us much comfort. So to make up for it we often throw a large celebration and leave to see the world and make new memories to enjoy during reverie," I explain.
"Interesting I never would have figured," the dwarf said stroking his beard in curiosity.
"So why don't you tell me a little about yourself," I said.
"Fair enough the name is Vondal Frostbeard I'm a warrior born and raised in Ironfang Deep till one day I decided to leave in pursuit of fame and glory glad to make your acquaintance" Vondal smiled gripping my hand in a firm handshake.
"Well met and what of the rest of you," I asked directing my attention to the others at the table.
To my left was a large Dragonborn man large reptilian head and gold-colored scales with large blue eyes like pools of crystal clear water. Dressed in polished plate armor with steel mace at his side the holy symbol of Bahamut embroiled on his armor. "My name is Shamash Linxakasendalor I am a cleric of Bahamut I was born in Rokthorl the capital of Relmaur I was raised in a temple of Bahamut in the capital after my parent's death I have decided to leave and become an adventurer to aid those in need and to spread the word of Bahamut it is a pleasure to meet you" Shamash smiled offering his hand to me in a gesture of friendship a gesture I gladly accepted.
To my right was a human woman with long raven black hair and with hazel eyes complemented by her fair skin. She wore tight-fitting leather armor and a belt on her waist containing a variety of tools from lock picks to poison. She wore a long dark cloak and kept her hood up shrouding her face in darkness. "The name is Atala it's an alias I don't really see the point in telling you my life story to people I just meet so let's try to get along so we can make some coin got it," Atala said eyes narrowing in suspicion at those at the table.
"Well meet friends here's to getting a job now and making some money," I said raising my flagon in a toast. The others soon join in even the withdrawn Atala joined in having perked up at the mention of money we clinked our flagons together in of toast before downing them.
Memory End
Theren's POV the Fortress
I smiled as the pleasant memory came to end I stretched as I looked through my room window I could see the rising sun's light reflected in the crystal clear lake near the fortress I could hear the sounds of nature from the forest surrounding the fortress (what beautiful day) I smiled.
(Master we're giving our report we have checked the minds of both Gazef, the king, and most of the staff we can confirm non of them had anything to do with the assassination attempt, will you be returning to the castle?) I heard the voice of Gabrielle speak in my head via her sending stone.
(Yes I will tell the simulacrum to teleport here and resume their duties I will be there shortly) I sent a message back via sending stone.
After seeing my simulacrum appear in the fortress courtyard through the window I turn to face Genevieve. "I'll be back stay here and guard the fortress" I order her.
"But I need to be there to protect you," said Genevieve her stern voice leaving no room for protest.
"Very well but try not to draw attention," I said knowing it was impossible for the winged being.
"Grab my hand," I said she grabbed my hand with her own it felt soft and warm yet firm.
"Teleport," with that we vanished with a flash of light
Re-Estize Capital
Suddenly with a flash of light, I appeared in my room at Re-Estize as soon as I appeared Gabrielle approached before draping to one knee "my lord who is this that stands beside you" she asked.
"This is Genevieve she is my newest servant she will be helping you to protect me," I explained.
"Very well then I will now give you the rest of my report as I said earlier I have read the minds of Gazef the kind and most of the staff here none had anything to do with the plot to kill you" Gabrielle replied.
"Ah yes I know I meant to tell you I did some questioning of the assassin and I figure out the Slain Theocracy was responsible" I explained.
A glint of pure wrath enter Gabrielle's eyes as she spoke fist clenching in anger "so they're the ones that tried to kill you,".
"Don't worry I will deal with them in time, Gabrielle tell me the king's intentions," I said.
"The king means to offer you the position of duke and ownership of Carne Village on all the surrounding lands totaling fifty-eight square miles to reward you. But there is another reason he hopes by doing so he can tie you to the kingdom Re-Estize" answered Gabrielle.
"Very well I can live with that this will give me a power base to build off of something I'll need to deal with the Theocracy"
"Then we will take you to meet the king"
The King's Private Chambers
King Ramposa and Gazef Stronoff sat in silence in the luxurious chambers of the king waiting for the arrival of the man that had saved Carne Village and single-handedly wiped out the Sunlight Scripture. Suddenly the doors swung open as a man in a long flowing white robe walked in followed by two women one a beauty in a green dress with long dark hair and green eyes next to her was another woman. Flowing golden blonde hair cascading down her back and piercing blue eyes wearing shining golden armor and large snow white angelic wings on her back.
The two men were taken back by the image before recovering king Ramposa was the first to speak "Theren Starflower for your role in safeguarding my land I hereby declare you a duke of Re-Estize kingdom do you accept" the king asked presenting a scroll to me the kings personal seal stamped into it.
"I do your highness," I said bowing my head respectfully and taking to scroll.
"This scroll names you lord of Carne Village and all the lands nearby over fifty-eight square miles now belong to you swear you will guard them well," The king said.
"I swear on my life I shall do all in my power to see to the area's safety and prosperity," I replied with sincerity in my voice.
