Chapter 3
Lex apparated back into her small apartment just as the sun was creeping up, which she knew that if she made it to bed now, she would at least have a few hours to sleep before she had to be in the office.
She moved into her bedroom, surprised to find the bed empty. This meant that Finn was already up or maybe he had never slept the night before, waiting for her to come home.
As she entered the room, Finn exited the bathroom. He seemed surprised to see her.
"So you finally made it home? Didn't think you would," Finn said simply.
"Oh...I..." Lex was cut off by how casual Finn seemed. Usually he was more upset when she didn't show up.
"I know...your Uncle sent me an owl last night. Honestly, Lex, when are you going to just get over the drinking and fighting? It seems like it's become more common than not." Finn said.
Lex couldn't tell if he was just very disappointed in her or if he enjoyed scolding her like a child. "I don't know what you want me to say to that."
Finn sighed. "I just want you to say you're going to work on it. I want us to be happy... we used to be and lately, I just can't figure you out."
Lex sighed. She hated the fact that she knew she was hurting him which was part of the reason she struggled with how she felt about him. She knew that she stilled cared for him or hurting him like this wouldn't be so distressful for her. "I'm sorry..."
Finn just nodded and took a deep breath. "I do love you, you know that."
Lex nodded. "I know."
Finn seemed disappointed by her response but the conversation was cut short by an owl landing outside the window, dropping a note through a small letter slot. Finn moved to grab it and then tossed it on the bed. "It's for you."
Lex turned and grabbed the letter. She opened it, read it and sighed. "My uncle decided to come visit today. I need to be back down at the Aurora's office this morning."
"Well, do yourself a favor and take a shower," Finn said a little lighter than before and then moved to give her a chaste kiss.
Lex didn't respond right away to the kiss, but she didn't push him away either. Her thoughts were swirling. If her uncle sent her a formal letter to be in the office then it was official Ministry business and she knew she could be in trouble. She knew she felt all different ways about Finn, her mother, her family's death, but the one thing she knew she cared about was her job. If she couldn't be an Auror she didn't know what she would have left.
Lex made her way into the Auror's office in New York, expecting to find her Uncle which she did but she was surprised to see Kingsley and Minister Chang there as well. She swallowed hard, thinking she was in serious trouble now.
"Good morning, Alexis," Cho said to her.
"Minister," Lex nodded at her.
"Lex, we need to speak with you," Harry said and then motioned to his office which Lex followed the three of them into in silence.
Once inside, however, Lex started speaking quickly. "Look, if this is about last night, I am really sorry, honestly."
Harry put his hand up. "It's not about that, Lex."
"We've come to speak with you about something pertaining to your family." Kingsley said.
Lex felt her brow furrow; this must have been what Scorpius had overheard. "My family?"
"Yes...it seems we may have some information about what happened to your family. You...you know there is some sort of a prophecy..." Harry started.
Lex nodded. The prophecy piece was about all they were in agreement on, but no one had any idea what the prophecy was.
"Well, we believe we have figured out what happened, what the prophecy said. It has to do with Rose...you see when your mother was pregnant with Rose your father thwarted an attack on them all and we think that may have been the catalyst for the attack later...the one that was successful." Kingsley explained.
"Okay? If he stopped the attack then we should know who carried it out later, right? We can catch them?" Lex was hopeful. If she could do nothing else, if she could catch their killers it would at least make her feel like she did something. It was at least some small sliver of peace she could give to her mother.
"Well, you see... Ron stopped the attack but never caught the attacker. He was too focused on getting your mom to safety." Harry said.
The hope fled from Lex's expression and she felt deflated. "Then why does any of this matter?"
"If we knew who attacked them back then, we could stop everything." Kingsley explained.
"Stop everything? What do you mean? Finding them now won't change the past," Lex said.
"No, but going back and catching them during that first attack...and destroy the prophecy." Kingsley said.
Lex shook her head. She was not following them. There was no way to go back to change any of that, and even if she could, what was so important about the prophecy. "What even was the prophecy?"
"We aren't sure. We aren't even convinced that killing your family made it come true." Cho spoke up.
"I'm sorry, I'm just not following any of this," Lex admitted.
Harry and Kingsley looked at each other, and Kingsley nodded at Harry as if they were exchanging some secret message.
"We think there is a way for us to send you back to protect your family, stop the original attack on your mother...if you can catch the group who attacked her and stop it then...well we think it can save everyone...keep your family alive," Harry said.
"But how?" Lex asked.
"With this," Kingsley held out a small gold object.
"What is that?" Lex asked.
"It's a time turner," Kingsley said.
Lex shook her head. "I thought they were all destroyed years ago...and at any rate, can't they only send you back a few hours at a time?"
"They were, but the Ministry has always kept one. We rarely completely destroy magic." Cho explained.
"And this one has been bewitched to travel much further back. We had been working on that spell for quite some time." Kingsley said.
Lex turned to her uncle and narrowed her eyes. "So you've known about this for a while?"
"I didn't want to say anything until we were certain," Harry said.
Lex nodded and bit the inside of her lip for a long moment.
"You don't have to do this, Alexis. We just wanted to give you the choice," Cho finally broke the silence.
Lex looked up confused. "Why wouldn't I do this?"
"Well there is always the chance we are wrong and by going back you may make things worse...or we may still not be able to change anything," Kingsley said.
"I don't see that being a risk I'm not willing to take," Lex said simply. If there was even a sliver of a chance that she could get her family back, she would risk anything.
"That is what we thought you would say," Kingsley nodded.
"When do I leave?" Lex asked.
"Tomorrow. We will give you a day to get sorted," Kingsley said.
"There is one other thing...we would like someone to go with you, as backup and because we don't think this is something that you can go at alone. Now it can't be any of us since we already existed back then..." Harry said.
"Okay, so who-" Lex started but was cut off when the door behind her opened. She turned to see Finn walking in.
"Finn will be going with you..." Cho said.
"What?" Lex was shocked and walked straight up to him. "You knew about this?"
"Only for a bit," Finn said. "My father-"
"Your father? what does he have to do with this?" Lex asked, unsure why Cormac McLaggen would be involved. He was a well known lawyer but it was mostly on civil wizarding law.
"He was working on a case a few months ago and came across some information relating to the prophecy being about Rose," Finn explained.
Lex felt betrayed by Finn. He has been staying with her for weeks and never mentioned this. She shook her head at him. "No."
"No what?" Finn asked.
"You're not coming with me," Lex said and then turned to Harry, Kingsley, and Cho. "I won't go with him."
"Lex-" Finn started.
"Scorpius. If someone should be coming with me it should be Scorpius. He's been trying to help me for years with all of this and Rose..." Lex said.
"Malfoy?" Finn's tone was one of utter shock.
"He loved Rose...he still does. He deserves to know what's happening, and he has helped me figure out everything I have so far. I want him to come." Lex explained simply.
Kingsley, Cho, and Harry all shared a long look as if they were having some secret conversation.
"I think Finn is best..." Kingsley said.
"Then I won't go," Lex said stubbornly.
Harry shrugged and looked at Cho. "Does it really matter who goes with her? As long as she isn't alone?"
Cho shrugged back. "I do understand letting Malfoy go but..."
"Please..." Lex seemed to almost beg and she hated the way her words came out.
One more look was shared among Harry, Kingsley, and Cho and then Kingsley sighed.
"Fine," Kingsley said.
"What?!" Finn seemed beyond annoyed and turned back to Lex. "Are you seriously picking him over me?"
"This isn't about you at all," Lex shot back.
Finn went to say something but then closed his mouth, leaving the room in silence.
Lex broke the silence. "Can I go tell Scorpius?"
Kingsley just have a slight nod and gestured toward the door, indicating she could leaves and she took full advantage of it.
Lex disapparated to Scorpius' flat outside of London. She was hoping he would be back from his visit to America otherwise she knew she would have a hell of a time tracking him down. She knocked on the door and waited a long moment before, to her surprise, Draco Malfoy opened the door.
"Little Weasley? What are you doing here?" Draco asked, genuinely surprised to see Lex. His voice was not cold but it was not super welcoming either.
Lex shifted uncomfortably for a moment. In truth, Draco had always been cordial with her at least and Rose had said he had always welcomed her into his home when she was dating Scorpius though his wife had always been warmer. The Malfoys had even attended Ron, Rose, and Hugo's funerals but Lex never felt very comfortable around Draco. She assumed it was because she knew how awful he had been to her mother in particular before the war, and she knew how he had been raised, although he had done a good job raising Scorpius to be nothing like him.
"Lex?" Scorpius' voice came from behind his father, giving Lex the easy way out of any conversation with Draco.
"I need to talk to you..." Lex said quickly and then looked at Draco. "Alone if possible..."
Draco raised an eyebrow at Scorpius but then nodded. "I was just leaving anyway."
"I'll be by to see you and Mum next week," Scorpius told his dad.
Draco nodded and left, closing the door behind him as Lex shuffled in past him.
"Sorry, I didn't think your dad would be here," Lex said.
"It's fine...I didn't know he was coming either. Apparently my Mum asked him to drop off a few of my old things from Hogwarts...guess they really want me moved out of the Mansion now," Scorpius motioned to a box on his kitchen table.
"Well, you are nearly thirty," Lex said.
Scorpius shrugged and then changed the subject. "What did you need?"
"Well, I got some news...about Rose," Lex started and then explained everything that Kingsley, Cho, and Harry had told her. Scorpius said nothing as Lex spoke and by the time she was done she was concerned he had not heard a thing she said, he was just staring blankly at her.
"Are you okay?" Lex asked.
Scorpius nodded slowly. "I just...I can't believe it...I mean, we might be able to save Rose?"
"Well, yeah, my whole family," Lex reminded him about Hugo and Ron.
"Of course, I just...I can't believe it. It doesn't seem real," Scorpius said, a small smile creeping on his face.
"So you want to come with me?" Lex asked, needing confirmation.
"Of course. No question...when do we leave?" Scorpius asked eagerly.
"Soon. I just have one thing to take care of," Lex said.
Lex left Scorpius' flat with a plan of meeting him at the Ministry the following day and grabbed the Knight Bus to St Mungo's. Before she left to potentially save her father and siblings she wanted to see her mother one more time. She wanted to let Hermione know she was really trying to fix things.
She made her way to Hermione's room after a brief exchange with the nurse at the front desk. She was younger and really just told Lex that Hermione had slept most of the day.
Lex opened the door to Hermione's room and found her mother sitting in her bed, reading a book on House Elves. The sight made Lex smile. The imagine of Hermione inthralled in a book was one that was etched into Lex's memory. She remembered countless times disturbing Hermione while she was reading around their family home, though Hermione always responded with a smile and out the book away after finishing the page. For a moment, if she ignored the fact that they were in a hospital, Lex could pretend she was with her mother.
Hermione looked up at Lex as the door closed behind her and gave a small smile. Lex could tell Hermione was having a good day, or at least good in that moment.
"Lex...your nose," Hermione said calmly, noticing the bruise on Lex face from her brawl the night before.
"I'm fine, Mum," Lex said, moving toward Hermione and slowly sitting down on the edge of Hermione's bed.
"It was broken," Hermione said, even if she was slipping here and there, she still knew when a spell had been used to fix something because it never looked exactly the same.
Lex ignored Hermione's concern and took a deep breath. "I came to tell you something, Mum... I've been given a chance to... well Kingsley told me-"
"No..." Hermione went rigid at the mention of Kingsley's name.
Lex didn't understand Hermione's response. Hermione had worked for Kingsley for years and he had always been welcome in their home.
"Mum, just listen. There's a chance I can save Dad and Rose and Hugo. I can go back-" Lex tried again.
"No!" Hermione's voice for high now and she seemed frantic. "Lex, you can't... it's not safe..."
"Mum, calm down..." Lex reached out to grab Hermione's shoulder, unsure why her mother was so upset.
"It's you!" Hermione became more frantic and grabbed Lex hand hard, squeezing it until Lex was certain her fingers would break.
"What's me?" Lex was confused.
"It's death! It's just death!!" Hermione grabbed at Lex now. "Don't listen to them!"
Lex was confused. Hermione wasn't making any sense now.
Suddenly Hermione laughed, and her laugh scared Lex. It was unhinged.
"All of it for nothing," Hermione laughed and let go of Lex. "Don't make this all for nothing."
Lex pulled away from the bed, so confused by her mother as two healers moved in to give Hermione something to calm her down.
Lex backed slowly out of the room, trying to hold back her tears of frustration and confusion. The only thing she knew was, she needed to fix this more then ever. She wanted her family back. She wanted her mother back.
