Chapter 11
Ron flooed back into the his living room, his head still spinning from all of the events of the night. He didn't know what was harder to process, the fact that he was going to be a father or the fact that Hermione may be the potential victim of a blood curse prophecy. Both felt like they had thrown his entire world into a spiral.
Ron hurried into the kitchen, ready to head straight upstairs to find Hermione who he assumed was asleep but was surprised to find her sitting at the kitchen table over a cup of tea.
"Hermione?" Ron sounded surprised.
Hermione looked up, and Ron saw her eyes were swollen from crying. Immediately his stomach dropped. She said nothing, quickly looking back down at her tea.
"Hermione..." Ron eased down in the seat next to his wife and without even thinking took her shaking hand in his, their wedding bands making a soft sound as the metals touched.
Upon feeling Ron's touch Hermione broke down, placing her other hand on top of their joined hands and letting out a sob.
Ron went rigid at Hermione's cry. He didn't know what to do.
"I'm... I'm sorry...I'm so sorry," Hermione managed out.
Ron's brow furrowed, he didn't understand what Hermione was apologizing for. "Sorry? What are you sorry for?"
"For not telling you straight away about the baby," Hermione managed to get out, fresh tears on her cheeks.
Ron shook his head. "Hermione, don't worry about that right now. It's fine...I mean, it's bloody crazy but it's fine."
Hermione looked up at him, seeming slightly offended. "Fine? It's just fine?"
"I mean, I haven't wrapped my head around it honestly, but it's not important right now." Ron said, wanting to explain to her what he had learned at the Ministry.
"Not important?" Hermione stood. Now she was really upset. Ron had found out he was going to be a father, and he considered that not important.
Ron instantly realized his word choice had been poor. "I didn't mean it wasn't important Hermione. Obviously it's very important, and I want to talk about it. It's just... something came up and I need to tell you about it."
Hermione could hear the concern in Ron's voice and it instantly made her worried. She sat back down, taking Ron's hand again. "What is it, Ron? What happened?"
Ron took a deep breath and licked his lips. "Well...Harry found the missing prophecy...or at least we think he did."
"And?" Hermione pressed.
Ron took another deep breath and avoided eye contact with Hermione as he spoke. "Well, we think it has to do with you..."
Hermione's face went white at Ron's words, unsure if she had heard him correctly. "What?"
Ron nodded. "Harry said it looked like the prophecy was attached to Granger-Weasley...so that would be you."
Instantly, Hermione looked down at her flat stomach, which she knew contained another life, a life that may very well be in danger now. She felt like her world was quickly falling apart in all the worst ways.
"But, we are going to figure this out, Hermione. We are going to keep you save until we can sort it all," Ron said quickly, trying to give her as much hope as he could though he himself wasn't sure what to think anymore. He felt so overwhelmed.
"Ron...I..." Hermione didn't know what to say. She felt overwhelmed. Earlier that day she was so excited to tell Ron about the child that they would be having and now that felt like a surreal dream.
Before Hermione could get her words together, however, there was a knock at the front door. Instantly, both Ron and Hermione looked up at the door and then to each other quickly. Ron motioned for her to be quiet as he slowly walked over to the door with his wand raised, in case he needed to fight.
When Ron reached the door, he looked out the side window to see who is in front. When he saw familiar faces, he instantly let his wand down and open the door to reveal Lex and Scorpius standing on the front steps.
Ron quickly pulled the two of them in, taking a quick glance around for death eaters before closing the door.
"What are you two doing here at this hour?" Ron asked.
"Well, sounds like we're on babysitting duty," Lex said with a nervous laugh in her voice.
"What?" Ron was confused.
"Kingsley who wants us to keep an eye on you or rather your wife until we can sort everything out. He thought you all needed extra protection right now." Scorpius said.
Ron glanced down the hallway to see Hermione looking back at them, trying to figure out what they were talking about.
Ron turned back to Lex and Scorpius with a sigh before leading them back into the kitchen where they met Hermione, who seemed surprised to see them both.
"Um...hello," Hermione stood, embarrassed to see Lex after what had happened earlier and unsure of who Scorpius was.
"Hermione, this is Scorpius, and you've already met Lex. Sounds like they will be spending some time with us," Ron made the introductions quickly.
"What?" Hermione was confused.
"Kingsley wants some extra eyes he could trust on you right now," Lex said, trying to make as little eye contact with her parents as possible. After what had happened earlier at the dinner she felt a bit awkward herself.
Hermione looked at Ron with a furrowed brow. She understood wanting to be cautious, but she didn't understand this mad rush for more more protection. Unless she truly didn't understand the prophecy which meant Ron might be holding more back from her. "Ron, is there something else I need to know?"
Ron shook his head in earnest.
"This was Kingsley's idea. I think he's just being over cautious...given who you are," Lex said quickly, as if she were able to hear Hermione's thoughts.
"Honestly, probably not a bad idea right now given the circumstances," Ron motioned to Hermione and her stomach, causing her to look down and her ears go red as if she were suddenly embarrassed about the fact that she was pregnant.
"Right...congratulations by the way," Lex said slowly and awkwardly. She wasn't really sure how to address everything with her parents at that moment.
Hermione just gave a small nod and a tight-lipped smile before getting to her feet. She suddenly felt exhausted, as if she could sleep for days.
"I think I'm going to go to bed," Hermione said softly, her hand gently touching Ron's chest as she walked past him. She wasn't sure how to act with him right now. She had no idea how he felt about the pregnancy and coupling that with the potential curse on her life only made that more complicated
"You should rest," Ron said as he placed his hand over her hand on his chest and gave it a small kiss. He too, was not sure how to process everything yet, but he knew he did not want her to cry anymore that evening.
Ron's touch gave Hermione a bit of confidence. "Take me up?"
Ron nodded, though he knew he was not ready to talk to Hermione about anything that was happening. He just needed to focus on making sure she was safe right now.
Once in their bedroom, Hermione closed the door and quietly made her way over to her dresser to take her pajamas out. Ron stood awkwardly against the bathroom door, as if he were a teenager again stealing a glance at Hermione's half dressed form as she changed rather than a man married to woman who was now pregnant with his child.
After a long moment of silence, Hermione spoke up, her back still to Ron as she slipped her shirt over her head.
"I know this is all a bit overwhelming, Ron," Hermione said.
Ron laughed a little to himself. "Which part? The part where you surprised me with a baby or the part where there may be a prophecy about a curse on you?"
Hermione made a face, slightly annoyed at Ron but also a bit sad. She had hoped telling him about the baby would have been a joyous occasion and maybe it could have been had it not been overshadowed by everything else. "Well, I'm sorry the timing of this pregnancy isn't as convenient as you had hoped."
Ron looked up to see Hermione glaring at him. "Hermione, I didn't say that. Honestly, I just didn't think we were trying to have a baby."
"Well, when you're married and have unprotected sex, what do you think will eventually happen?" Hermione asked, now visibly annoyed as she crossed her arms over her chest.
"I guess I didn't know we weren't using anything," Ron admitted. He had just assumed Hermione was using a charm to avoid this, not because they didn't want a family but because he assumed they would have talked about it a bit more.
Hermione's mouth gaped open at her husband, suddenly feeling like he was putting the brunt of the responsibility on her shoulders now.
"I guess you didn't ask," Hermione wanted to sound strong in her words, but they came out hardly above a shaky whisper.
Ron moved forward now, seeing he had really upset his wife. "I'm sorry, Hermione. I just...I'm surprised is all."
"Do you even want to have a baby?" Hermione asked, looking up at him with watery eyes.
"I mean...yeah...of course, I just thought that day was a bit further off but...but I do want to have a family with you so...yeah...honestly I'm happy. I mean...I'm scared...I don't know what to do with a baby really, but I'm happy," Ron fumbled out and it was true. Deep down the new made him extremely happy he just felt like, given the circumstances there could have been a better time.
Hermione gave Ron a soft smile. "Well, if it makes you feel better, I'm scared out of my mind as well. Having a baby wasn't on my list of things to do this year either...but it is a happy surprise."
Ron laughed a little, for a moment feeling the tension leaving the room. "Well, then we can be scared together."
Ron kissed Hermione's forehead and laughed against it a bit. "Bloody hell, we're having a baby..."
Hermione laughed a little also, feeling at ease now with Ron's reaction. She nodded against his lip, looking down at her flat stomach. "We are."
Ron sighed now, causing Hermione to look up at him. "Assuming we can keep you both alive and safe."
Hermione's smile faded. Now that she knew that Ron was okay with the baby her thoughts trickled back to news he had brought home about the prophecy. In truth, the prophecy did not scare her. She knew most were self-fulfilling and as long as they could figure it out, there would be a way around it.
"We will figure this out. I know we will." She said confidently.
Ron sighed, "I hope so."
"You should probably get back downstairs and talk to those two," Hermione said of Lex and Scorpius.
"How are you so calm about this, Hermione?" Ron asked. It seemed like the potential blood curse was less concerning to her then a pregnancy that, while not planned, was hardly a bad thing.
"Because logically a prophecy isn't anything until those around it make it a real thing. Think about Harry...Voldemort caused that prophecy to be self fulfilling. Had he not gone after Harry, it wouldn't have come true. I don't expect any other prophecy to work any other way." Hermione explained her thoughts
Ron face a small smirk. He was always amazed at how smart she truly was. "Hopefully this baby gets your brains, Hermione."
Hermione gave a small smile, already feeling a bit better about the pregnancy before a yawn overtook her lips.
Ron smiled back at her. "You should get some rest. We got plenty of protection around us tonight and I'll be up as soon as I can."
Hermione nodded, giving Ron a quick kiss before coming into bed herself. Truthfully, she was exhausted from her nerves from the pregnancy and from the new news. Normally she would have thought all of this would have caused her to stay up for days, but she assumed the pregnancy hormones, made sleep much more visible option. Regardless of how worried she was, she could barely keep her eyes open.
Lex and Scorpius stood awkwardly in the Granger-Weasley kitchen, Lex shuffling from foot to foot while Scorpius looked around. He had been to the house many times before when he had dated Rose and he was surprised to see, beside the decorations, not too much as changed.
"Blood weird being back in here..." Scorpius commented.
Lex gave a sarcastic laugh. "To say the least."
"It's weird seeing your parents, yeah? Even if they are years younger then I remember," Scorpius said.
Lex nodded. "It honestly feels awful. I just want to hug them both and yet...I can't. And the way they look at me feels bizarre. Like...like a stranger."
Lex had been trying to sort through her feelings since her arrival but the dinner with her parents had only made her feelings bubble over. She missed them both so much and now they were so close to her physically but so far from her mentally and emotionally. It was draining.
"Well, you are technically a stranger." He said as he eyed her carefully. Standing there, in the strange yet familiar surroundings, so much older than he last remembered her in the house, Lex eerily reminded him of Rose. They looked so much alike, apart from their hair color. Scorpius had always found it funny that only Lex had inherited what he would have assumed was Hermione's dominant brown hair color.
She nodded. That was true. They had no idea who she was to them and they never would.
"So how do we do this? Split shifts? Both just stay here...I mean we need to keep her safe," Scorpius referred to Hermione.
"Her and Rose," Lex smirked.
Scorpius felt his ears go red at the mention of his former girlfriend. It felt incredibly weird to know that Hermione was now pregnant with Rose.
Ron's footsteps caused the pair to lapse into silence. A moment later, Ron was standing in the kitchen with them.
"We need to talk protection," Ron said matter of factly.
"We were just trying to sort that out," Scorpius said.
"We were thinking try and split shifts...keep the other Aurors on the house but at least one of us being close to Hermione at all times. It will probably feel a bit invasive at first," Lex said. She has done details like this before for high profile ministry individuals and it was very invasive.
"That's fine," Ron sighed, rubbing the top of his head as he closed his eyes. "We need all the protection we can get for them right now."
"Right...Lex mentioned Hermione was pregnant...that you just found out?" Scorpius said.
Ron nodded and looked at Lex. "That's why she was at St Mungo's...guess her file wasn't wrong after all."
Ron's word hit Lex like a ton of bricks as she immediately started piecing together the puzzle in front her. She was grateful she did take after her mother in the brains department, like so many folks had reminded her over the years.
"Her blood...they stole her blood," Lex's voice was hardly above a whisper as her mind raced putting everything together.
"What?" Ron asked, not really able to hear her clearly.
"They took the sample of her blood from the hospital...whoever broke in there," Lex's eyes lit up as her mind raced.
The look on Lex's face reminded Ron of Hermione every time she had a brilliant thought and he found it both odd and comforting at the same time.
"Okay, but what does that mean?" Scorpius was trying to keep up. It always amazed him, how the Weasley girls could think so quickly. Rose had been the same way and he had been told both Rose and Lex took after their mother in that regard.
"Well, the prophecy is involving a blood curse which means you need blood of the owner of the prophecy in order to understand it. Which means, if the prophecy is about...Hermione, well they need her blood to actually hear the prophecy," Lex explained logically, though she got hung up on calling her mother by her first name. It felt so strange.
"So whoever took the blood stole it to confirm the prophecy," Ron had caught himself, though it took him a minute. He too was amazed at Lex ability to think, it reminded him so much of Hermione, even the way she delivered the information.
"In theory...yes. It explains why they broke into St Mungo's anyway, which means, we need to get to Kingsley and tell him immediately in case they haven't put it together her either," Lex said.
Ron quickly looked up the stairs that led to the room Hermione was sleeping in. Given the new theory, there was no way he would leave her side for a second.
"You don't have to come...we can go," Lex said as if she was reading her father's thoughts. She could tell he wouldn't be going with them.
Ron nodded, appreciating how weirdly in tune his new partner was with him. "I can't leave Hermione."
"Technically, we were ordered not to either," Scorpius reminded the two of the orders they had been given to never leave Hermione alone.
"We will be quick. Plus, there are some other Aurors out front," Lex said.
Ron nodded in agreement with Lex. "Just hurry back with any news you can on what Kingsley wants to do now."
Lex and Scorpius nodded and then moved to the fireplace to floo to the Ministry leaving Ron standing there with a whole new set of anxiety.
