Chapter 310 The Dying Aragog
"Where is Malfoy?" Evan shouted.
He raised his wand cautiously and carefully observed Aragog.
He hadn't seen him in months. He seemed much weaker than before. He appeared seriously ill, and all the gray fur on his body had fallen out.
He lay quietly in the middle of the web, almost lifeless.
Above his ugly head, the sharp black pincers began to show some unhealthy grayish white, blending with the white cloak covering each eye. Unlike the gigantic female spider he had just seen mutate, Aragog not only had not strengthened but was becoming old and had an imminent look of death.
"Are you afraid of me, Hagrid's friend?" Aragog said slowly, with a hint of mockery in his voice, "Afraid of an old dying spider?"
"Where is Malfoy?" Evan asked.
The light at the tip of his wand was growing increasingly intense. "Tell me, otherwise, I don't mind you experiencing what it truly means to die."
Click, click, click...
"An idle threat, I do not fear death. I have lived for too long. Death would be a relief," Aragog said slowly, "Besides, kill me and you cannot save your comrade..."
"Then let's give it a try." Evan's wand emitted a red light, brushing against Aragog's body and passing over him. "I forgot to mention, I don't actually care much about Malfoy's life or death. I came here mainly to kill you and incidentally save Malfoy. So don't think you can threaten me with him."
Aragog recoiled slightly, his eight pairs of white eyes facing Evan.
They stared at each other, neither speaking. They were testing each other's resolve.
Aragog seemed to sense Evan's determination and the powerful magic building up, and soon Aragog couldn't bear it.
"I will ask you one last time, WHERE IS MALFOY?" Evan shouted.
"That human boy is right below, there..." Aragog said weakly, "You are right, I cannot die, at least not now."
"Did you say Malfoy is down there?" Evan asked doubtfully.
Through the web under his feet, he looked down into the dark cave below.
Nothing could be seen but endless darkness.
At the tip of his wand, the next second, he sent a ball of light straight down through the hole in the web. The ball of light fell for a long time and finally disappeared into the darkness. This made Evan realize that the cave below was too deep for the light to be seen from the bottom, and he didn't know where it ended.
He couldn't help but think of the underground vaults of Gringotts, a special area of molten underground waters and small islands, tens of thousands of feet underground.
If this cave was like that, how did Malfoy get there?
There were no goblin-built tracks, and falling from here would definitely crush him.
Was Aragog lying? Was he deceiving him?
Pondering this, Evan looked up and carefully surveyed the surrounding walls, finding nothing. This was already the deepest part of the Lair, and there was no way out.
"What the hell is going on?" Evan gripped his wand. "I don't have time to play with you, Aragog. You know, my patience is limited."
"Do not worry about the human boy; he is still alive." Click, click, click. Aragog slowly moved his large pincers. "He will not kill him, I know. Believe me, we still have time. That human boy's soul is of great importance for that. He has been waiting for this day for a long time..."
This statement sounded truly unpleasant.
Evan tried not to think about what Malfoy's soul could be useful for.
Moreover, who was "that" which Aragog spoke of? Why did it need Malfoy's soul?!
"Do not be so mysterious, Aragog," Evan aimed his wand at him. "Who is 'that'? Why does he need Malfoy's soul? What does he intend to do?"
"I will tell you, Hagrid's friend," Aragog said slowly, "It's a long story, and I will tell you all that I know..."
"Then you better hurry up and not try any funny business," Evan interrupted him directly.
"As you can see, I am so weak that I cannot move and cannot threaten you at all." Click, click, Aragog continued, "But I cannot die. At least I cannot fall before finishing that. Otherwise, my descendants will be enslaved forever. I need your help, Hagrid's friend! You are brave, you have great strength, and most importantly, you are as kind as Hagrid. I have never seen a human like you before. Surely you will help me, won't you?"
"Do you have something to ask me?!" Evan narrowed his eyes and looked doubtfully at the old creature before him.
He also thought he had misheard. Aragog had really said he was as kind as Hagrid. There was nothing wrong with that, but it depended on who said it.
It was very ironic that it was being said by an Acromantula.
After all, the last time he encountered Aragog was definitely not a pleasure.
Aragog and the other Acromantulas saw Evan as fresh prey, and it ended with a fire he induced turning countless Acromantulas into ashes.
Right now, he had left Aragog's wife and their future offspring in a boiling pot of fire, further reducing the number of Acromantulas in the Forbidden Forest.
It could be said that the Acromantula population had suffered great losses due to Evan's efforts, and they were now facing an imminent extinction crisis.
In this case, it was already quite strange that Aragog was not doing everything possible to kill him, and now he had a request from him?
Evan looked carefully at Aragog. Was this old spider becoming delirious, or did he have a hidden agenda?
However, neither possibility seemed to be true. Aragog seemed too weak now; he was on the brink of death.
"Yes, I have something to ask of you, please believe me!" Click, click, Aragog moved a little closer to Evan. "Furthermore, if you want to take that human boy with you, you also need my help."
Evan remained silent, waved his wand and gestured for him to continue. Believing in Aragog, trusting a dark creature, an Acromantula, had already proven to be foolish, and the result was being chased by hundreds of Acromantulas in the Forbidden Forest that night.
If it weren't for Mr. Weasley's car, he wouldn't even be alive right now.
He wouldn't be foolish enough to make this mistake a second time, but before determining Malfoy's whereabouts, it didn't hurt to hear what Aragog wanted to say.
Moreover, Evan was very curious to find out what Aragog would say about "that".
