Catch-22: The Beach Trip

"I can't believe you two talked me into this. I'm grown man hanging out with teenagers. It's ridiculous and it's hot," His uncle said for the millionth time.
The trio was waiting by the car while Theo found them a place.
"Come on, dad. You said that we could have a family vacation this summer," Nanako said sweetly.
Yu covered his hand over his mouth to prevent himself from laughing.
"Not like this!"
"If I remember correctly, Theo did check with your schedule to see if you were available. You could have said no," Yu said.
His uncle mumbled under his breathe.
"Because your assistant is sneaky!"
"I am no such thing, sir! Master, I have found the perfect place for us to set up! Come, Mr. Ryotaro! Ms. Nanako!" Theo said in excitement when he approached the car.
They grabbed their stuff by the car and followed Theo to their spot.
The beach was definitely busy today as the group made its way through the crowd. He hoped that his students were able to find a spot.
"Over there, Master," Theo shouted excitedly as he pointed to a pile of floats covering the chairs and a table.
"What the…?" His uncle said as he saw the pile.
"Well, that is a way to hold a spot," He said.
"Thank you, Master!" Theo said with a bow.
The group removed the floats and began to set up their stuff. Yu took out his phone to see his students' new messages.
Ann: We are here!
Ren: Finally find a spot.
Ryuji: It's so hot…I'm dying.
Makoto: Are we still meeting you by the banana boat after lunch?
Futaba: :an emoji with an anguish face:
He texted back that he will meet them at the paddle boats after lunch.
"We should change and have lunch then meet the others at the banana boats. I know some of my student rented a three person one and I rented another one," He said as he put his phone away.
"You two go ahead. I'm going to sit here and relax," His uncle said as he took a seat in one of the chairs.
"But, dad…" Nanako said with a frown.
"Don't worry, Nanako. When we come back, we can bury your dad in the sand," He said with a grin.
Nanako's eyes lit up. His uncle gave him a look.
"YU!"
"Yes, uncle?" He said with a mischievous grin.
"Oh, yes! This will be an enjoyable experience. I never buried someone in the sand before. Is it true that they can't move?" Theo said excitedly.
"If you do it right."
"Oh! That would be so much fun!" Nanako beamed.
"Fine…Fine. You win," Dojima said with a sigh.
Nanako squeed then hugged her dad.
"YAY! Let's get changed and eat lunch!" Nanako shouted.

It took them some time to get changed and get lunch because Theo was amazed by everything.
"Master! Master! What is that?!"
"Can I try that?"
"Can I eat that?"
"Master, is that wise for them to be doing that?"
"CAN I HAVE THAT, MASTER?"
He and Nanako took it in stride. Dojima might be a little confused, but he seemed amused by the whole thing. He could tell that Nanako loved explaining things to Theo. After all, they do hang out with Teddie, it was second nature to them to explain things. Theo took everything they said to heart and was having such a good time.
Theo needed a break as much as he did.
Finally, after fighting with Theo to get sunscreen on his face, they made it back to their seats with their lunches.
"Your assistant is something," His uncle said as he took a bite of his onigiri.
"He is. I would be lost without him," He said with a smile as he watched Nanako explained to Theo the proper way to eat onigiri.
"A little weird."
"Good at keeping a schedule. I should send him home. How many times has Nanako called me to tell me that you are late?"
"A lot. Nanako would probably like that. They are already thick as thieves," His uncle said with a laugh.
"Probably, how are you doing uncle? I didn't have a chance to ask last time we talked," Yu said with a pause.
His uncle sighed.
"Guilt. Regret. A little bit of relief. I looked into what happened, it looks like two rival gangs were going at it and Adachi was just caught in the middle. Wrong place, wrong time. Nothing supernatural that I can see. No one had a breakdown like the ones in the city. I did send some photos to Naoto just to check it out. Even if you don't want to hear it, I think that this one is normal."
"Thank you, uncle."
Yu knew better. It was quite possible that Akechi used his connections to do something to Adachi. Question is why would he target Adachi in the first place? His connection to him were years old.
It left him confused and frustrated.
But right now, he'll leave it alone and talk it over with Naoto and Yosuke later. Talking to them always helped him clear his thoughts.
An alarm ended their conversation.
"Time to go, Master!" Theo said excitedly as he stood up.
"You better go before they bury you in the sand," His uncle said with a chuckle.
Yu laughed.

Theo spotted them first as they were approaching the banana boat stand. He shouted and started waving his hand to get their attention.
"Ms. Makoto! Ms. Ann! Ms. Futaba!"
"Hey, Theo and Sensei!" Ann shouted and waved to them as they approached them.
He felt something pressed against his back. He turned around to see Nanako hiding behind him.
"They are just my students, Nanako. You will like them," He assured her.
"Hello, Nanako-chan. My name is Makoto. This is Ann and that is…uhhh…Futaba, what are you doing?" Makoto's voice called softly behind him before it rose in confusion.
He turned back to see Futaba had put a duck floatie on her head.
"Hey, Nanako-chan!" Futaba shouted as she walked pass them.
"That is a very interesting hat you are wearing, Ms. Futaba. I do worry about your ability to see," Theo said as he guided her back to the group.
"I am fine!"
Yu heard a soft giggle behind him.
"Nanako was telling that last episode of Featherman was terrible," He said with a smile.
"No, it wasn't!" Both girls shouted.
"Oh, I must have heard it wrong."
"Yes, you did!" Futaba said with her hands on her hips.
"Big Bro, you weren't paying attention!" Nanako said as she tugged on his arm.
Oh, he was paying attention, but he had another goal in mind.
"Then why don't you tell me what happened?" He said with a small grin.
That seemed to do the trick. Futaba lost the floatie over her head at one point. Nanako moved from the back of him to the front of him. There was a lot of arm waving and comments.
"Do you remember…"
"Oh, that scene…"
"OH! That move was super awesome!"
"I KNOW!"
Poor Theo looked so confused as he tried to follow along with their story. Yu made a mental note to show him the youtube video when they got home.
Luckily, Makoto cut them off.
"You two are going to have to continue another time. We are going to be late for our banana ride."
Nanako squeed and grabbed Futaba's hand.
"Come on! You can ride with me and big bro!" Nanako shouted as she pulled Futaba along.
"Awww…Futaba made a new friend," Ann said with a giggle.
"Very clever, Sensei. Very clever," Makoto said with a small smile.
He smiled.
"Come on. We better catch up before they leave without us."
"Right!" Ann said with glee.

"That was marvelous!" Theo shouted as they walked back to their spot. They promised to meet the others by the volleyball net after they grabbed Yu's uncle.
"That was marvelous! We need to bring dad next time," Nanako said.
"We should," He added.
"I should bring my sisters. It would be an experience that they would truly enjoy. I.." Theo said then stopped in mid-sentence.
"Theo?" He said with concern.
"I'm sorry, Master. I…" Theo said softly.
He looked like Yu ran over his puppy.
"Don't worry, Mr. Theo. Your sisters can come too. It will be fun!" Nanako said.
"It is okay to miss them. Besides, Nanako is right. We should bring your sisters along next time," He said.
Although…he wasn't quite sure what will happen when Elizabeth discovered the banana boat.
"You're right. Thank you," Theo said with a sad smile.
He made a note to pick up some sweet cream for Theo.
It always cheered Theo up.
Finally, they reached their spot. His uncle sitting in one of their chairs with a beer in his hand. He looked amused at something. Nanako ran over and started talking a mile a minute.
"DAD! We had so much fun! And I made a new friend, Futaba. I'm going get her number before I leave!"
"That's great. I'm glad that had a good time. Oh, by the way, I found your students," Uncle said as he waved his hand out toward the beach.
He frowned. He never showed his uncle a picture of his students. He looked out where his uncle pointed.
He saw Yusuke with a pair of lobsters in hands. Ren and Ryuji close by.
Oh.
"You sure like the strange ones," Uncle said amusedly.
He shrugged.

Once they dragged Uncle out of his chair, they made their way to the volleyball count. After a round of introductions and the reason for Yusuke's lobsters, they divided into teams for a friendly game of volleyball.
Correction, it started as friendly game evolved into a trash talking volleyball game especially between his uncle and Makoto.
"Come on, I am the old man here! I'm kicking your butts. Pitiful," His uncle shouted.
"Respectfully, sire. I'm going execute you," Makoto shouted back.
"Try it and they will never find the body."
"You can try but I will make sure that you will never walk again."
"You will never make it to college with that weak trash talk."
"Should we do something?" Ren whispered into his ear.
"Nah, they are having fun," He answered back.
Then came the issue of him being too tall.
"Stop being so tall, Sensei," Ryuji said after he blocked another ball.
"I can't really help that," He said amusedly.
"That is why he is on my team, short stuff!" His uncle shouted.
"HEY! I am not short! I am….am fun size!"
Futaba and Nanako busted into giggles on the side lines.
Arguing over lines.
"Clearly that crossed the line!" Makoto pointed as the ball hit the line.
"No, it didn't! See! The mark is still there!" His uncle said.
"That is your footprint!"
And calls…
"Your ball touched the net!"
"No, it didn't!"
They decided to the end game with a tie much to Makoto and his uncle's dismay.
Theo and Yusuke made a sandcastle for the lobsters. Morgana acted as their manager.
"No! The lobster is going to be crushed. Make it the other way."
"You call that a castle wall, Theo!"
The end of product turned out pretty good. The lobsters seem to enjoy it. Of course, he and the others had to get a picture of it.
He, Nanako, and Futaba buried his uncle in the sand. Makoto used that opportunity to ask his uncle a ton of questions about the police and policy. It was kind of funny since said uncle couldn't escape.
Ryuji, Ren, and Ann went to play in the water. When they came back, Ann reported that she almost drowned Ryuji for being a perv.
Ren just shook his head at the duo.
At one point, Theo declared that they should get ice cream before they leave. Of course, that stopped everything. The group began shouting out the flavors.
"I wish to have chocolate!"
"I want vanilla!"
"Me too!"
"Matcha!"
"Chocolate!"
"You better not leave me here!" His uncle shouted as he tried to get out of the sand.
He laughed as he and Nanako helped his uncle out.
The group made their way to the ice cream stand.
"I had so much fun today, Sensei!" Ann said happily.
"It was a rather enjoyable trip." Makoto added.
"We should do it again. I'm glad that you invite me," He said.
"Nah, man. You're like one of us," Ryuji said with a grin.
"Yup, I'm going to design his outfit," Futaba said excitedly.
"Are you part of a special group again, Big Bro?" Nanako asked him in curiosity.
The entire group froze and stared at Nanako. They forgot that she was with them. He tried really hard not to laugh.
Ann laughed nervously.
"I mean…our study group. Your big bro is our Sensei."
"Oh, so, it isn't like the world in the tv?" Nanako said with a frown.
"Wait, you know about that?!"
Nanako nodded.
"Yup, Teddie told me about it. Sometimes, I still have dreams about it when I was there. You know that big bro and his friends saved me, right?"
"Nanako?"
He and the others worried about the impact the tv world had on her.
"I'm fine, big bro. It's you that I'm worried about. Dad said that you get into all sort of trouble."
"Don't worry. We will keep him out of trouble. I promise," Makoto said softly to Nanako.
Futaba snorted.
"Good luck with that."
"I know, right? Like that is going to happen," Ryuji added.
Nanako sighed.
He glanced over his shoulder to see his uncle, Ren, and Yusuke. Ren and Yusuke looked slightly terrified. Perhaps, it would be a good time to save them.
"Uncle, are you traumatizing my students?" He shouted.
"I'm not traumatizing anyone! I merely asking them questions about school and their goals," His uncle shouted back.
"Traumatizing questions," He said as he stopped to wait for them to catch up. Yusuke and Ren moved rather quickly to catch up with the others.
His uncle snorted once he caught up with him.
"Whatever, but you do have some good kids there. I'm glad that you invited me and Nanako here. It was fun," His uncle said as he waved to the group ahead of them.
"It was. We should do it again sometimes. They are good students. Society has kicked them down a bit, but I think that they have found their strength in themselves and each other," He said fondly as he looked at his students laughing and carrying on with each other.
"They also have a good teacher."
"I try to be."
"Don't underestimate yourself, Yu. You're a good kid with a good heart who also gets into too much trouble."
"Only sometimes, uncle. Only sometimes."
"All the time, Yu."
He laughed.
