Kim awoke the next morning feeling Adams arms around her body. She had no idea when he came in but was happy to have him home again. It had been a strange day at work so she had been happy to get home but wished he had been home earlier to talk through the day. They hadn't intended to tell Eric about the baby alone but Kim didn't want to risk Allie telling him and make the whole situation worse. She moved his arms just enough so she could get up to use the bathroom before returning into his safe embrace. Once she returned she watched him while he slept longer. He clearly needed it but she wanted to talk. He waited a bit longer before waking gently, placing kisses all over his face. She loved watching him wake this way. He was adorable as his eyes fluttered and his nose scrunched as he woke. When his eyes fully opened the beaming smile looking back at him caused him smile wide as well.
"Good morning!" Kim whispered before kissing him properly. "Good morning to you too. I'm happy I didn't wake you when I came in." He wanted to hold her tight but it seemed she wanted to talk. "Me too. I needed the sleep and so do you but I needed to talk. Yesterday was strange during my shift. And then last night after talking to Eric. It was not fun." She sighed heavily. "Why was work strange yesterday?" He wondered if she knew about Upton or not. "Um so I'm not sure really but I think something happened with Upton. She was called into the office, left in a huff and then Platt nodded at me like telling me I was okay. But I have no idea why." She watched as his face told the story, he knew. "Yeah so I heard her trash talking you a bit. About being pregnant and how it was ridiculous. Rojas told her that she should shut up before getting fired. And that you being pregnant and happy had nothing to do with her. So I went to Voight asking for him to handle it before you found out. You were so happy yesterday and I didn't want he to ruin it. You deserve to be happy, everyday, but especially with this pregnancy since the last one wasn't the greatest experience for you." He watched as she processed the information.
"You know Rojas said hi to me yesterday. Telling me I looked great. I can't remember if she said congratulations or anything else. I just waved at her. I wasn't looking to invite drama. But it found me anyway. I really just understand why she cares so much about my life. Like it doesn't affect her at all. So why feel the need to talk about me. It's just annoying and I'm frustrated thinking about it." She sighed once again. "Now tell me what happened with Eric? I assume it didn't go well. And I'm sorry you had to do it alone but once Allie knew you needed to tell him before she did so I get it." He wasn't upset that she did it alone more sad for her. "Well he wasn't happy about the baby for himself but he was happy for us. More proof that it's really over I guess. I had hoped he would just be excited for us but I don't think he has really processed that it's over and never gonna happen. I want him to find someone so he can move on but honestly I don't think there is anyone who can put up with his shit. I never felt like the first priority in the relationship. We fought all the time about the same issues. One being he would be out with his friends and never answer my text or calls. So I had no idea when he would be home. If he was coming home. I always worried that he was cheating on me with the one friend. They had more in common. Same taste in music, movies, drinking heavily, golf. It lead to a lot of insecurity and fights. He would always say he would do better but nothing changed. So I ended it." She had never told Adam the issues she just said that she and Eric were over.
"Well I can see why you would be concerned. Sounds like you had every right. That he allowed you to have those insecurities and did nothing to avoid them. Also sounds pretty selfish on his part. Also like he didn't respect you or your relationship. You did the right thing by leaving when you did. And by sticking to it when you broke up." He saw Kim was deep in thought. But he let her open up on her own. "You know he was raised that boys don't cry. Emotions are a weakness. Even as he got older his family was cold emotionally but also beyond strict. He didn't go home for two years or talk to them at all. You would've thought he learned from that experience but apparently not. I'm just glad he tries harder to be a good dad to Allie. And that he tries not to be his dad." She shrugged it off a bit. Adam mulling over what was said. "Sounds like people who could use some therapy. But I've known that for a while. But nothing you told me surprises me at all. Just the way they acted the first time I met them told me everything I needed to know. I wish we didn't have to deal with them, ever. But we do and we just keep trying." He pulled her closer knowing she needed the calm his embrace would give her.
"What time do you work today?" Kim asked not knowing since it was a late night. "9 instead of 8. It's fine it wasn't too late of a night." He felt her nod. "How about a shower before the kids get up?" She smiled while asking knowing he could feel her lips. "Sounds like a good plan. Though I know your intentions are not pure this morning." He laughed as she swatted his chest. "Blame the hormones!" She pushed him slightly to move towards the bathroom to start the shower. He followed picking her up and placing her on the counter top. Wrapping his arms around her, kissing her long and slow. His fingers moving her belly, he loved touching the growing bump. Kim just smiled into the kiss loving how sweet he was. As they broke the kiss he carried her into the shower. Placing her down gently as he started to wash every inch of her. Never in a rush just enjoying the feel of their skin touching.
Kim had had enough of the sweetness, her hormones raging with need. She took control going for what she wanted and needed, him. She let her intentions be known by stroking his penis making it hard. "Darling, you sure?" He wanted to double check as he was still learning how her hormones worked. He never wanted her to regret it. "Yes! I need it! I will have to take care of myself if you don't and I would rather it be you." Kim looked deep in his eyes as she spoke. "Okay I just want to make sure I'm not taking advantage of you in this situation. I would never do that so I needed to hear it." He had been fine for a long time with her issues but right now it seemed more important than ever to check in. "Thank you for that! I appreciate it more than I can say but right now I'm good. I really do just need you." She was pleading with her eyes. He nodded before picking her up and pressing her against the shower wall.
Once he was certain he had a good grip on her body he thrusted inside her watching the feelings over come her body. He loved watching her face as he entered her. The look of peace and happiness that took over. He wish he could get a photo of that look but he knew that would never happen. He allowed he to adjust only briefly before he started to thrust again. Finding a good rhythm that drove her crazy but not rough. It was pure heaven for them both. The outside world had no effect on them here. It was only them chasing pleasure. He was brought from his thoughts by her nails digging into his shoulders, her teeth biting his arm trying to keep the moans quiet. He took the hint moving his mouth to her breasts sucking hard bringing her over the edge as she groaned his name. He finished right behind her groaning loudly with his head thrown back in pleasure. The couple was sated for the moment but knew it might not last too long.
As the trembling subsided Kim was placed on the ground. He made sure she was steady before loosening his grip. Her face still pressed against his chest. "God I needed that! Thank you!" Kim kissed his chest but didn't make any attempt to move. "You never have to thank me for that. I love that I get to be here for all of it this time. You will never go without this time and you will never have to take care of yourself unless I'm on a case. Otherwise I'm here for it all." He watched as the tears started to fall. He knew it was partly the hormones but also her just being thankful that she wasn't in it alone this time. Eric was useless the first time so this was a very welcomed change for her. He simply just kissed the tears away before helping her to get clean. If she wanted to open up more that was fine but for now he knew enough to know she really had be on her own before.
The water ran cool as the couple exited that shower. Neither wanting to stop touching the other. It seemed as though they couldn't get enough of each other. They dressed slowly before going to wake the kids. Kim walked into Allie's room to se she was already starting to get dressed in the outfit she had picked out. It was adorable and she was quite good at picking matching things. "Good morning sweetheart! How did you sleep?" Kim asked watching her daughter. "Mommy! I slept good. Did you?" Allie asked sweetly. "I did. Are you ready for breakfast?" She asked knowing her daughter was probably starving. "Definitely!" She sighed dramatically. "Okay my little actress let's get downstairs you start with taking care of Tiger while I start breakfast." Kim watched her daughter skipping out the door. Kim smiled hearing Adam trying to wake Riley. "Hey bud it's time to get up." Adam rubbed his back trying his best to wake him softly. All the changes in their lives was hard on Riley once more so Adam was trying to be gentle and assuring in every conversation.
He felt Riley bury himself against Adam's leg. "I know buddy. Your mommy does that too. How about after work we go to the park together just the two of us?" Adam wanted to spend time with his son alone showing him that nothing was going to change and he had nothing to be scared of. Riley nodded as he stretched out in his bed. "Alright potty time little man, then breakfast." Adam watched as Riley got up and moved towards the bathroom. He was slow but moving in the right direction. He was most definitely not a morning person. Kim had headed down the stairs by this point leaving the boys some space, knowing they needed it. She headed to the kitchen to start making breakfast first the kids and herself. She watched her daughter cleaning up the litter box and throwing the trash away. Making sure Tiger knew his box was clean before heading to wash her hands. Kim laughed a bit but knew Allie was just taking after her by talking to the cat like he understood her.
"Sweetheart it's so nice of you to such wonderful care of Tiger. I'm sure he appreciates it." Kim watched as Allie smiled wide. "Who's going to watch him when we go away?" She asked. "I don't know yet but I'm sure everyone will want to take care of him. He's such a sweet boy." Kim hadn't thought that far in advance but knowing their family someone would make sure he was good. By the time the boys entered the room breakfast was ready for the kids. Both sitting at the table eating happily. "Good morning my sweet boy! How are you this morning?" Kim asked kissing his cheeks. "Good, hungry!" Riley giggled. "I can see that. Well eat up so you can get ready for school." Kim walked back to the kitchen. "Morning Allie Cat! Did you sleep well sweetheart?" Adam kissed her forehead sitting at the table with the kids. "I did! Did you? We missed you last night!" She replied as she ate. "I missed you guys too! I had to work late getting the bad guys. But when I got home I slept very well with your mommy." He loved talking with both kids hearing about their days and any other random things they wanted to talk about. He felt like this was how he stayed connected even when he worked late nights and early mornings.
Adam used his extra hour to soak up all the time with his kids he could get. He watched as Kim sat down to eat her breakfast his right hand on her belly as he talked to the kids. Kim smiled sweetly loving all the family vibes that morning. Once the kids finished eating Adam took Riley upstairs to get dressed and brush his teeth. He was more awake and agreed more easily when he was awake. Kim stayed downstairs making lunches while Allie played with Tiger. She loved watching him try to catch the toys and laughed when he would rabbit kick his fake mouse. Though he was still quite small he had grown enough to play longer and engage with the kids while they played with him. They all loved how he would hunker down low and shake his little booty before chasing a toy the kids had thrown. But for Kim she still loved it when he slept on her. It reminded her of her old cat and the peace he had brought her.
Soon it was time to head out for the day. Kim took the kids to school while Adam relaxed a bit longer at home. He didn't really relax though. His mind plagued with thoughts about just how bad Kim's relationship had been with Eric. And just how thankful he was that she agreed to have another child after such a bad experience the first time around. He was also thankful that this time she also had no nightmares so she was sleeping better and staying well rested. That probably helped make her pregnancy easier. He had also been thinking about this Upton situation. Why was she targeting Kim so badly? He knew they didn't have history so it confused him. He wondered if it was possible to get a mediation between Kim and Hailey to work through whatever this was. He didn't want the added stress effecting her or the baby.
As he headed in he decided to ask Voight about it and see what he thought was possible. District gossip was one thing but seemed personal and that was a problem. When he came through the lobby he didn't see Kim there but knew she was probably busy elsewhere in the district. He headed up to the bullpen to see he was the second to last one there. He greeted everyone before stepping into the office. "Hey boss. Got a sec?" He asked sitting in one of the chairs. "Yeah what's up?" He asked curious as to why Adam was here. "So I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out why Upton keeps going after Kim. Is it possible to have Mouse look into it or have some sort of meditation between the two. It's just not right that this has happened twice that we know of." He was conflicted knowing this could go wrong in so many different ways. "Sure I can ask. You might not get the answers you are looking for. But I will look into for you. Don't worry we will get it handled." Voight picked up the phone to make a call while Adam headed back to the bullpen.
"Kim doing okay?" Kevin asked hoping nothing was seriously wrong. "Yeah she's hanging tough. Confused as to why Upton trash talked her again. But she's good. Happy. Last night was rough. She told Eric about the baby. Can imagine that didn't go over well. But she did open up some about how bad their relationship was and the insecurities that led to the break up. Something about a female friend who he was close with, spent too much time with. Makes sense why she's always thanking me for helping out around the house." Adam just shrugged a bit. "I remember that chick! They spent a lot of time together. Ignoring calls from Kim claiming the phone was in the car charging or that the bar was too loud to hear it. She felt rejected, ignored, unheard most importantly not respected. They would fight about it, he would promise to do better and it never happened." Erin took a deep breath before continuing.
"He never helped around the house, never cleaned up after himself. If she asked for his help with something he never did it right away. Literally hours later or never. She got really good at the deep, disappointed sigh. They he would get pissy that she was huffing and puffing and rolling her eyes. It was ugly. They were ugly together. We were thrilled when they broke up. Allie tied them together forever." Erin shrugged this time. "Well I'm just thankful that she's been able to happy and nightmare free this pregnancy. And she will be supported fully this time around. I promise everyone that." They all knew if but it didn't hurt to remind them. "Oh we know!" Jay laughed looking towards the stairs as they heard the gate open. "Hey darling! What's going on?" Adam asked getting up to hug her. "Hey baby. So Allie's school called. They are talking to the kids about signing up from activities which I'm all for. Allie apparently picked Karate. The school they recommended would allow her to have friends in the same class, again all for it." Before she could finish her thought Adam interrupted. "You want me to run a back ground check on the employees?" He questioned knowing her so well.
"Exactly! Platt is letting me go check it out now knowing it would drive me crazy if I have to keep thinking about it. So I'm headed to this Karate studio to check it out. I will let you know how it goes." Kim kissed him quick before leaving again. He watched her go with the name of the location in his hand before hearing his boss coming out of his office. "We got a case! Dead gang bangers! Let's suit up and go!" Voight called out. The team suited up heading out to their scene, the note left behind. Kim drove to the location after adding the business name to her GPS. She was excited Allie wanted to do something other than dancing, Kim had loved playing soccer even while she danced. When she arrived outside the location she froze right away. Her body started to shake, her breathing ragged. "I'm sorry! Please don't! Please I beg of you please don't!" Kim whispered. She heard people trying to talk to her, she couldn't understand them. She just kept repeating she was sorry.
"Ma'am step away from her. It's unsafe. She's clearly disturbed!" The officers stepped forward attempting to cuff Kim. Unfortunately she started to fight back. "Let me go please! I promise I will behave! I promise I will leave Adam just don't do this please!" She cried out pushed till she was cuffed and on the ground. Paramedics arrived on the scene coming over to help out. "Why is she cuffed and on the ground?" Violet asked. "She's disturbed and fought against us. She assaulted us!" The officer yelled. "She's an officer herself! And she's clearly having a flashback! Unruffled her now!" Violet yelled back helping Kim on to the gurney. The officers cuffed Kim to the gurney once more. "31 to main, please notify the 21st district Officer Kim Burgess is bring brought to Chicago Med." Violet reported as she worked to stabilize Kim.
"Kim we got you! You are going to be okay!" Violet spoke calmly as they closed up the ambo and started to head towards the hospital. "50-21 Ida to dispatch!" Called over the radio. "50-21 Ida what's going on?" Adam called back. "Your fiancé is being taken to Chicago Med." Dispatch let me know. "Thank you! Im signing out." Adam saw the team nod as he jumped in the car heading to the hospital. He had no idea what happened. She wasn't answering her phone. He was freaking out trying to figure this out. He barely parked the car as he jumped out running into the hospital looking for anyone he knew. "Maggie! Where's Kim? What happened!" His voice sounded foreign even to himself but he was scared to death. "Adam calm down a bit. She was brought in during a flashback, fought the cops, she was cuffed. She's going to be fine. We gave her a small sedative to help her calm down some. We have her on a fetal monitor just in case but the baby seems unfazed. She's in room 3 just try to relax a bit." Maggie assured him. He was left confused. Why did she have a flashback. Why did she attack the police. This was not good, at all.
He arrived at her room seeing her asleep. Her blood pressure and heart rate were elevated but the fetal monitor was normal. He rested in the chair next to her. He sent a text to Voight next giving the heads up about her attacking the cops. He only hoped it wouldn't hurt her career or that she wouldn't be arrested for real. He saw the cuff marks on her wrists. She was obviously fighting back and they obviously didn't care if it was a flashback. He stayed watching her for a long time before she started to wake. "Adam." She whispered. "Hey I'm right here. You are okay. I got you." He watched her calm a little. "I'm so sorry Adam! I'm so sorry!" Kim cried. "Hey this isn't your fault. You did nothing wrong." Adam wasn't sure if she was awake yet or reliving the past. "Kim darling! You are not 13 anymore. You are 26, almost 27. We have two beautiful children with a third in the way. I need you come back to me." He tried to explain in a way that would bring her back. He watched her nod. He watched her take a deep breath.
"Okay so what happened today?" He asked softly while holding her hand. "It was that place. I drove to the karate studio and when I got there and saw the building, I froze. Next thing I remember I was waking up here. I do remember people trying to talk to me. Other than that it's a blur." Kim cried harder as she spoke. "Oh Kim! That's horrible! Sounds like you were in a flashback. But you are going ti be okay. And our baby is doing just fine. So let's just try to relax some more." He tried to sit down but Kim pulled him closer. "Just hold me. Please!" Kim begged. "Of course! I just didn't want to trigger another flashback." He laid down next to her holding her tight. He felt her body relax as she breathed in his scent. "That's good darling! Keep going!" He encouraged. It wasn't long before her breathing evened out again. She was asleep once more.
He sent a few messages letting people know what was happening so they could get the kids situated for the night. Erin and Jay agreed to take care of the kids at their house and let Drew have a sleep over with the kids. It was easiest for everyone even if they had no idea how to take care of Tiger. They would figure it out. The time passed by with doctors and nurses coming in to check on her. Making sure she was comfortable and stable. They agreed she could go home later as long as the numbers stayed level. The numbers had leveled off since Adam had arrived. As long as they stayed together they would be fine. They would get past this too. They were awoken hours later when the team arrived to check in on the couple. "Hey. How are you feeling?" Erin asked softly. "Good. Better. Not sure what happens next but I'm good right now." Kim explained. "Well that's good. Don't worry about anything else. Voight and Platt are on it." Kevin said as he hugged Kim. "Taking care of what exactly?" Kim asked confused. "Kim you attacked the police officers who were trying to subdue you. That's why you have cuff marks on your wrists. But we will work this out too. It wasn't your fault. Flashbacks happen and we as cops need to do better at recognizing them and handling them." Adam assured her.
"Oh! I I didn't realize. Are they going to arrest me?" She asked looking at the people in front of her. "Most likely not. You might have to allow them to have access to your therapy records showing what happened was normal at one point so they can see you aren't faking it. But I think it will go away without issue." Dawson offered knowing how the system worked. "I hope so. I would hate to have my career ruined over this. And it's only the first time I attacked someone other than Adam. I can't go to jail." Kim cried in fear. "Don't worry! It's not going to happen. We won't let that happen. We promise you!" Al held her hand, holding it tight. "Thank you. I'm just really scared right now." Kim closed her eyes taking a deep breath trying to steady her nerves. "We are going to head out now. Get your kids take them home. You rest up. We will see you soon." Jay patted her leg as they started to head out.
"Adam I totally fucked up! This is so bad! I could go to jail!" Kim cried as he held her. "That's not going to happen. They will probably mandate therapy which you already do and put you on a desk till you are cleared mentally. And you are already on desk duty so that's not an issue either. Just know that no matter what happens I love you more than anything in this world. We will get through this together." He continued to hold her till the tears subsided. Kim was mostly asleep again when he noticed the Commander walk through her door. "Commander Crowley. What can we do for you?" He asked quietly trying not to wake Kim. "I wanted to speak to Officer Burgess about the issues from today. I know it's been a difficult day but would you mind we speaking with her?" She asked politely knowing this had been a traumatic day for them. "Of course. Let me wake her." Adam offered. "Kim darling. I need you to wake up. Commander Crowley is here to speak with you." He whispered while rubbering her back. He felt her nod against his chest. He helped her shift some so she could sit up better.
"Commander. Is everything alright?" Kim asked softly, scared to death. "Yes Officer. You can relax. I just wanted to let you know that you are safe. You have nothing to fear. You will not be punished for what happened today. I also wanted you to know that I'm so proud of you for how far you have come. I was here protecting the door when you had your exam all those years ago. I never forgot that day. I was so damn proud to hear you became a cop and everything you have accomplished. I will you be now but just know you are safe. Take care of yourselves." She shook their hands as Kim cried in relief. Adam cried as well knowing they were safe and the relief washed over them. Shortly after Kim was released from the hospital. Her vitals were stable and still no contractions so she was free to leave. As scary as it had been they were free to head home again.
Adam had his arm around her shoulders the whole way to the car not wanting to break that connection just yet. The world around them felt lite again. It was beyond beautiful to them. Though she wasn't hurt he still helped her into the car before getting into the drivers seat. They knew her car was still in from of the karate place but it could be moved later. Once she was safe in their home he could deal with the car. About halfway home he realized she was asleep again. It didn't surprise him in the least. As they arrived home he carried her into the house and to their room before he said a word. He saw the kids eating happily and that they understood mommy was tired from a bad day. He tucked her into bed after getting her dressed in a shirt and sleep shorts. He slowly left the room hoping not to wake her. He saw Tiger running up the stairs which was new for him but watched as he tried to get to her. Adam smiled fondly and went back to place him on the bed. Watching as the small cat curled up on her chest falling asleep right away. He shook his head before leaving once more.
In the dining room he hugged both kids kissing their heads as he grabbed some dinner. He was starving and exhausted but he was just thankful they were all okay. "Daddy Adam is mommy okay?" Allie asked very curious about why her aunt and uncle picked her up that day. "Mommy's going to be okay. She had a very dream today while awake. It's called a flashback. But since she wasn't with someone who understood they took her to the hospital to get her treated. But she's fine just very tired. Before bed you both can snuggle with mom okay?" He watched the kids smile wide about snuggling with Kim. He also watched Erin and Jay nod at how he handled it. "Should we head out soon to grab her car? I would hate for it to get towed." Jay offered knowing Erin would rather stay with the Kim and kids right now. "That would be great. I hadn't even thought about it till we were driving home." He thought for a minute before he continued. "Kim's in the clear. Crowley showed up and told Kim it was all handled. Nothing to worry about. So we are both relieved which is an understatement but you know what I mean." He watched them nod knowingly.
The night continued as planned. The car was picked up while the kids snuggled into Kim's side. The cat only leaving briefly to use the litter box and eat. But Adam wouldn't have it any other way. Seemed like they all needed to be together after a very long stress filled day.
